Emily Lau has survived her freshman year and is ready to make the most of her summer. She plans to hang out with her best friend, spend as much time as possible with her aunt, and occasionally be a normal teenager. Unfortunately, normal isn't happening anytime soon. Her summer plans get put on hold when an old friend visits. Her family owes him favors, and he's come to collect.
August Black is a boy who knows just how scary the world actually is. He knows about the monsters that lurk in the dark and how dangerous magic can be. He and his grandfather need help, but he is less than thrilled when he finds out that Emily is coming with them. In fact, he thinks they're all going to die.
The forest is a magical place of wonder and happiness. Or it was. Something has changed. Now Emily and August have to come together to learn the secrets of a forgotten forest.
A great sequel in a solid YA series. It was an inventive step from the first book. Instead of being placed in the modern world, we are taken to a pocket realm and a much more fantasy setting of this forest. I admit I don't remember many details from the first, primarily the main character arcs, but the author gave just enough call backs without being too much. The main plot here was quite independent of the first while still weaving through the larger story and anticipating the coming storm.
I liked the growth our characters go through, and that though there's a boy and girl thrown in to a situation together and they're not related this doesn't feel like it's setting up a romance (too much of a trope in fantasy books, animated movies, YA lit generally). Rather, we get a pair initially wary of each other (they way you are when adults force you to spend time together) to eye opening realizations to supportive friends.
