I love how these poems strike a balance between dark humor and really tough topics: parents trapped in nursing homes during the pandemic, the sudden death of friends, all the hard things that teachers have to deal with on a nearly daily basis. Because of the dark humor, these poems get me feeling and thinking but not wallowing in misery. Lots of great wordplay, too.
The poems in this collection almost always included narratives, and narrative poetry is the poetry that I enjoy the best. Savarese is great at creating striking scenes, and I loved the stories he was able to tell in each piece.
