MOONSET ON DESERT SANDS: A Witch Paranormal Murder Mystery (Murder, Tea & Crystals Book #2) by Sherri L. Dodd is an emotional mystery/YA paranormal romance mash-up and the second book in the trilogy. I feel this trilogy is best read in order due to Arista’s continued increase in paranormal powers and emotional growth, and the overall trilogy plot of her uncle seeking her elimination.

A year has passed, and Arista and her aunt are in Sedona to get away from the horror of the murder in the first book in the trilogy, Murder under Redwood Moon. This story has Arista in peril as always from her Uncle Fergus, but it also has her facing many emotionally devastating moments in her life. This installment of the trilogy has danger and death, but I felt it is more focused on the changes in Arista personally and her growth. The crime plot and Arista’s personal life are all intertwined and kept me turning the pages, but there is a slightly slow portion about a third of the way through, but it picks up and is well paced with suspense after. This is an easy-to-read book, and I feel it is geared more to the YA paranormal reader.

I look forward to reading the last book of this trilogy.

Moonset on Desert Sands is a brilliant sequel to the book Murder Under Redwood Moon. (Both part of the Murder, tea & Crystals Trilogy)

As the previous year bleeds away, the pain of it's trauma still remains.
Perhaps a change of scenery with help to lift the veil of stress and heartache. Arista and Auntie make their way to Sedona where the sun scorches your skin and the sand sticks between your toes. With the intentions of a somewhat fresh start, no one could have anticipated that after the year they had endured, that such evil could still lurk within the darkness. Sedona brings love, loss and a range of people that are both new and once known. Will Arista be able to protect herself from the ever persistent threat? Will she be reunited with her Redwood Pines? Though the sun shines; murder is in the air, tea is brewed, and crystals are cleansed.

Book two brings; possession, love, loss, heartache, unraveling secrets, and even another realm.

When I read the first book in this trilogy I fell in love with the layered plot, deep descriptions of nature, and the beauty of witchcraft all from a gripping story perspective. Book two didn't disappoint, the story continued to keep me hooked and I didn't want to put it down.

I have really come to be attached to these characters, with Arista's strong mind and Auntie's almost whimsical wisdom. I so often grow fond of well written characters such as these, they are both rememberable and loveable. Even some of the less favoured characters like Fergus and his incentive to kill have been burned into my brain.

Each character has a very distinctive way of talking. With there being a fair few characters throughout the book I found the consistency of individual voice quite impressive. In book one (Murder Under Redwood Moon), the sheer amount of characters had come across a little overwhelming. Despite this, as I read book two (Moonset on Desert Sands) I could see such a progression not just of the story itself but the progression of the writing. The growth of the author from book one to book two in this series is very admirable and I can't wait to read book three.

Arista's story is inspiring, though we may not be able to relate to the unique ways of life, her specific situation, or the fact her uncle has an inhuman thirst for her blood. We can relate to her head strong personality, strength, kind heart, and free spirit.

Towards the end of the book Dodd, left me searching for endless possibilities of what was to happen next and what could potentially unravel in book three. The last three or four chapters were definitely action filled and almost teasing as they played with so many scenarios before shining a light on it's true path.

If you enjoy reading about the following I highly recommend reading this book: witchcraft, a twisting plot, deep descriptions of nature, complicated love, loss, grief, possession, festering evil, and of course Murder, Tea & Crystals.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

“And for the first time, the death aspect attributed to the moth applied to her.”

A dash of murder and magic makes Moonset on Desert Sands a captivating narrative. The second installment of Murder, Tea, and Crystals by Sherri L. Dodd. An interesting cozy mystery thriller that harbors an array of well-presented characters.

Fergus is still on the lookout for Arista. Arista, protected by those around her from her bloodthirsty uncle, might just get the opportunity to meet the man who prevented her childhood from being what it was supposed to be.

This book was a cozy read, and I enjoyed the flow and the plot. The ending is a memorable part of the majority of the book. I highly recommend it to lovers of mystery thrillers.

Sheri L. Dodd’s Moonset on Desert Sands is an absolute delight. A beautifully crafted mystery infused with magic, intrigue, and unforgettable characters. As part of the Murder, Tea & Crystals trilogy, it sets the perfect foundation for an immersive and thrilling series.

The story masterfully blends elements of cozy mystery, the supernatural, and a hint of adventure, keeping me hooked from the very first page. Arista is both relatable and compelling, navigating a world filled with secrets, murder, and mystical elements. Dodd’s characters are superb, making each interaction feel genuine and engaging.

What truly sets this book apart is the atmosphere. The vivid descriptions transport you straight into the heart of the desert, where every shadow holds a secret, and every sip of tea might reveal hidden truths. The balance between mystery and the supernatural is handled expertly, making it feel both grounded and enchanting.

The pacing is perfect. Each chapter builds suspense while offering just enough clues to keep readers guessing. And just when you think you have it all figured out, Dodd throws in a twist that keeps you turning the pages late into the night.

If you love mysteries with a touch of the mystical, Moonset on Desert Sands is a must-read. It’s smart, engaging, and beautifully written. I can’t wait to dive into the next book in the trilogy! Highly recommended for mystery lovers and fans of the supernatural alike.

Book 91: Moonset on Desert Sands by Sherri L. Dodd

Grabbed this book on my Kindle, thought I would give the book a try despite it being the second book in a trilogy.

Synopsis: With a traumatic year of fending off a serial killer behind her, Arista has settled contentedly into her temporary home with Auntie in Sedona, Arizona. She enjoys her new job selling all things metaphysical and even has her eye on the hot security guard, Dakota, after her recent breakup with Shane.

Review: Sadly, reading a second book in a series without having read the first was a mistake, should have known better, too much referencing events from the first book. My biggest issue was the ending. I was along for most of the ride, but the ending did not strike me. Yes, there is going to be a trilogy, and the author has a map, but I did not like the way that transition was going to be made. My rating would have been a bit higher before the ending. There were a few other things that I did not care for in this book, but will say the main character was worthy of reading the trilogy, and her side coven of witches were fun also. In the end, my rating is 3⭐️.

In “Moonset on Desert Sands,” the second installment of Sherri L. Dodd’s Murder, Tea & Crystals-A Trilogy series, Arista is finding a little peace after surviving a year marked by a serial killer. Living temporarily in Sedona with her beloved Auntie and doing her best to settle in, Arista is working at a metaphysical shop. She’s also catching glimpses of a certain charming security guard named Dakota. But soon her sense of control is shaken after experiencing strange fainting spells. Also, a return to her hometown of Boulder Creek reveals unfinished business—both magical and emotional. Tension builds as an old enemy, her dangerous uncle Fergus, resurfaces with unsettling new allies, forcing Arista to draw on everything she’s learned about her craft, her spirit, and her strength to protect those she loves.

Dodd’s prose flows easily with the tone expected of a cozy paranormal mystery. It has its light moments but is also grounded in a character-driven story that touches on grief, family, and healing. Arista is both sensitive and strong, a young woman still finding her footing in both relationships and power. Dodd thoughtfully handles Arista’s emotional range, like when she tells Auntie,

‘I know my sadness will ebb and flow… Just know the in-betweens… I know I’ll be okay.’

Her connection to Auntie remains one of the strongest parts of the book. The affection and guidance between them hold the story together, especially as Arista’s gifts continue to develop in sometimes overwhelming ways.

The plot shifts smoothly between daily life and supernatural suspense, fusing magic spells, haunted objects, and an ancestral presence that threatens to consume Arista. One powerful moment happens when she reflects,

‘Actually, it’s kind of the opposite. I had no control over my rage… then felt… like… a slice right through my brain.’

That raw vulnerability makes her increasingly high-stakes conflict with Fergus feel real. Fergus himself is deeply disturbing. He is a villain whose presence creeps across the pages with an escalating menace. Dodd manages to balance this dark energy with the warmth of the coven, the support of Dakota, and even with some surprisingly light romance.

Readers who enjoy paranormal elements without an overly heavy or horror-driven atmosphere will appreciate the magical realism in the book. The pacing isn’t heavy on the plot twists but leans more on the emotional side. But it works well for readers who enjoy character growth and interpersonal tension. The metaphysical shop scenes, family reunions, and horseback rides through the Sedona landscape all contribute to the charm.

That said, a few moments are repetitive—some inner reflections or descriptions might have benefited from a slight trim to maintain tension. Still, Dodd’s unique voice and well-developed characters carry the story forward with sincerity and a sense of purpose.

This installment will best appeal to fans of cozy paranormal fiction with witchy themes, gentle suspense, and emotional depth. Readers who enjoy books by Juliet Blackwell or Heather Blake will likely enjoy Arista’s world. And for those invested in the series, “Moonset on Desert Sands” feels like a natural and satisfying continuation of Arista’s journey.

This heartfelt and magical sequel blends supernatural tension with deeply human themes of grief, identity, and healing. Fans of gentle paranormal fiction and emotionally complex heroines will find so much to enjoy in Sherri L. Dodd’s “Moonset on Desert Sands.”

Returning to Sherri L. Dodd’s world feels like catching up with an old friend after a storm. Having read the first book in the series, I was curious to see where Arista’s journey would lead after all she endured—and Dodd doesn’t disappoint. Moonset on Desert Sands deepens everything that made the first story so gripping: the witchcraft, the danger, the aching heart of a woman trying to find her place in a world that won’t let her rest.

Arista’s move to Sedona, with its mystical energy and desert calm, offers a false sense of peace that Dodd paints so vividly you can almost smell the sage and feel the dry heat clinging to the page. The author’s strength lies in her ability to balance the supernatural with the raw, emotional reality of her heroine’s trauma. You feel Arista’s exhaustion, her longing for normalcy, and her quiet resilience. The fainting spells are not just a plot device—they become a symbol of her body and spirit still recovering from the wounds of the past. When she returns to Boulder Creek, the tone shifts from meditative to suspenseful, and Dodd handles that transition beautifully. The creeping dread of Uncle Fergus’s presence—this monstrous shadow that looms across generations—is amplified by the sense that evil isn’t just physical in Dodd’s universe; it’s inherited, spiritual, and sometimes heartbreakingly familiar. The author threads family, witchcraft, and danger into a fabric that feels both haunting and intimate.

Dakota, the new love interest, is drawn with care—protective but not overbearing, mysterious yet grounded in the real world. Their chemistry adds warmth to the story without softening its darker edges. And Auntie remains one of my favorite characters: wise, eccentric, and brimming with a kind of practical magic that feels utterly believable. The writing itself has grown richer since the first book. The pacing is taut, the imagery cinematic, and the dialogue sharp without losing its emotional pulse. Dodd doesn’t rely on cheap scares or predictable twists. Instead, she lets tension build like a rising tide, carrying readers through every moment of uncertainty, grief, and courage. The desert setting becomes a character of its own—its stillness, its beauty, and its secrets perfectly mirroring Arista’s internal struggle.

By the end, I was left both satisfied and eager for what comes next. Moonset on Desert Sands is a story about survival, self-acceptance, and the invisible threads that connect family and fate. It’s witchcraft fiction done right—rooted in emotion, steeped in mystery, and pulsing with heart.

A mesmerizing continuation of Arista’s journey. Sherri L. Dodd delivers a sequel that feels more powerful, more assured, and utterly unforgettable. Five stars.

Moonset on Desert Sands is the second book in the Murder, Tea & Crystals series.

The story starts with a rather exciting opening, a cultist working as a police officer steals a murder weapon from an evidence locker. However, he has a change of heart and turns his car around to return the weapon to the police station. It is then, he is run off the road and dies in the resulting accident.

The main character is Arista, who is a young woman. The book is in some way of a coming of age story. She is hiding from the aforementioned cult in the desert city of Sedona. She works in a crystal shop (not like glassware, but crystals with magical properties), and I think the author has a good understanding of tea and crystals. This is a very different change of pace compared to the thriller-like speed of the start of the book. The book alternative perspectives between Sedona town’s folk, Arista’s relatives, and cultists on the hunt for her. At times, all the characters got a little confusing for me, there are quite a few. I think part of this might have been that fact I didn’t read the first book, so all the names and people confused me at times.

The primary villain of the story is a man named Fergus, who seeks revenge on Arista by stabbing her with the “athame”, the murder weapon stolen from the evidence locker. I personally found the characters of Fallon and Fergus to be more compelling than Arista’s character. In fact, I think they were my favorite of the book. In particular there is a scene where Fallon is doing yoga while talking with Fergus that expertly depicts their interesting relationship. I think it could come straight out of a how-to book on incorporating actions with dialogue, it was very well done. Throughout the book the psyche of Fergus was generally well portrayed and he was a well crafted villain.

One minor point of complaint, in a rather graphic scene, a cultist is found with a deadly weapon (the athame) and police confront him. They aim their guns at his end, and fire. While the scene is fast paced and enjoyable, I think this isn’t the most likely outcome, as the police likely are trained to fire at the target’s center of mass. That said, I think the scene still works for dramatic effect.

The language used is often quite descriptive. As an example, just this simple line about putting on makeup stood out to me: “she dabbed her cheekbones with the shimmering burgundy powder coating the soft, Sable bristles of her brush.” Overall the prose is quite good.

If you love tea, crystals, and murder, as the series is aptly named, it will be perfect for you.

After a narrow escape from death, Arista retreats from Boulder Creek to the desert lands of Sedona, seeking sanctuary with her great-aunt Berthie and the Coven. Together, they build a quiet life away from the shadows of her past. Yet, even after a year, the threat of her ruthless Uncle Fergus looms large. His relentless ambition drives him to hunt Arista down, forcing her to prepare for an inevitable confrontation. Determined not to be a victim again, Arista dives into mastering spells, decoding auras, and honing the powers she is destined to wield. When visions, eerie signs, and an unexpected reunion trigger a carefully laid trap, it becomes alarmingly clear that Fergus is closer than ever. His greed knows no bounds, and with danger closing in, Arista must summon every ounce of strength for the battle of her life. The stakes couldn’t be higher—will she vanquish Fergus once and for all, or will his insatiable ambition dismantle everything she holds dear?

Sherri L. Dodd’s Moonset on Desert Sands grips readers with its relentless suspense, intricate plot twists, and dazzling display of magical mayhem. Each chapter brims with chaos and surprises, making it nearly impossible to put the book down. The characters are compellingly drawn, with Fergus stealing the show as the villain. Unlike the first installment, in which he remains in the shadows, Fergus dominates this book, his schemes driving the narrative forward. His villainy is so vivid and theatrical that he’s almost charming—an antagonist you can’t help but admire, even as you root for his downfall.

Meanwhile, Arista’s characterization is more complex. At times, her decisions feel justified and strategic; at others, they seem erratic, which adds an intriguing, if occasionally frustrating, layer to her journey. Stevie, on the other hand, is a delightful wildcard. His humor and recklessness provide levity, making him a standout. This sequel amplifies the magic. Every page bursts with spells, aura readings, and mystical rituals, immersing readers in a world of non-stop witchcraft. While the book is lengthy, its rich plot, dynamic characters, and constant action ensure the pacing rarely falters.

Fans of magic, witchcraft, and light thrillers will find Moonset on Desert Sands an enchanting escape. Though it’s the second book in the Murder, Tea, and Crystals series, it stands alone beautifully, offering newcomers an unforgettable journey into its spellbinding world.

A Spellbinding Paranormal Mystery with Suspense and Magic

Moonset on Desert Sands is the second book in the Murder, Tea & Crystals trilogy, drawing readers back into the mystical world of Arista Kelly, a young witch whose life is steeped in magic, metaphysical wonders, and looming danger. Having survived a serial killer, she finds solace in Sedona, Arizona, where she shares a home with her beloved Aunt Bethie and works at Cosmic Prisms, a metaphysical shop brimming with crystals, charms, and supernatural energy. But Arista’s peace is soon disrupted when unexplained fainting spells force her to return to Boulder Creek—a place filled with painful memories, lingering heartache, and a more menacing threat: her ruthless uncle Fergus, now aligned with an even deadlier force.

Sherri L. Dodd blends cozy paranormal mystery with suspense, keeping readers engaged with Arista’s personal struggles, newfound romantic tensions, and the ominous shadow of her family’s dark past. The lush descriptions of Sedona’s breathtaking landscapes and the detailed exploration of Arista’s magical craft add a layer to the story.

While the book begins slow, it gradually builds tension, weaving together elements of mystery, supernatural intrigue, and emotional depth. Fans of witchy fiction storytelling will enjoy the integrated aspects of auras, enchanted stones, and spellcraft. The characters are complex and well-developed, making their journeys both compelling and relatable.

Although this novel can technically be read as a standalone, it heavily references events from Murder Under Redwood Moon, making it beneficial to start with the first book for a fuller understanding of Arista’s past.

Overall, Moonset on Desert Sands is an absorbing and atmospheric sequel, brimming with magic, mystery, and danger. Paranormal mystery lovers will find themselves captivated by Arista’s world and eager for the next chapter in her journey.

I was invested from start to finish!

Moonset on Desert Sands is the second book in author Sherri L. Dodd’s mystical and mysterious series, Murder, Tea, and Crystals, and I was invested in the story from its shocking opening scene to its close, wanting to know everything about these characters, their lives, and how they got to this point. After escaping a serial killer the year before, Arista is living quietly in Sedona, Arizona, but, nonetheless, finds herself the target of her Uncle Fergus. This story continues the plot from the series debut. For the best understanding and enjoyment, the books should be read in order of publication.

I really like the character, Arista, and enjoyed learning about the shop in Sedona, crystal lore, her use of teas, and right off the bat, her interest and growing skill in seeing and understanding auras. These topics are totally outside my wheelhouse, other than what I’ve encountered in other books featuring witches, so it was an interesting and fresh underlying theme for me. After the events of the previous book, Arista has healed quite a bit but is still dealing with her feelings and heartache. She is surrounded by other well-developed and diverse characters, who help create a vivid sense of her community and leave very strong impressions, both good and bad, depending upon their role. I easily became invested in their stories despite being at a disadvantage, having not read the first book.

The story grabbed my attention from the start with an exciting and shocking opening. The author’s descriptions put me smack in the middle of the action with all its accompanying foreboding and terror; I was hooked for the long run. The author weaves in references to the past throughout the current story, but I really had to tease these bits out to understand the current developments. However, with its non-stop action, robust descriptions, and engaging characters, I soon couldn’t put this book down, and, with its conclusion of possibilities, I plan on backing up and reading book one in order to be ready for the next.

I recommend MOONSET ON DESERT SANDS to mystery readers who enjoy stories with paranormal elements.

Moonset on Desert Sands by Sherri L. Dodd is an enchanting dive into a world where magic, mystery, and human complexities intertwine. The story orbits Bethie Spiritbrite and her circle of coven sisters, weaving their spiritual practices with a gripping mystery involving a stolen athame and its sinister connections. Set against the vivid backdrops of Sedona and the redwood-covered Boulder Creek, the book melds magickal lore with suspense in a way that feels both grounded and otherworldly.

What I loved most about the book was its evocative imagery and atmosphere. Dodd paints Sedona and its mystical allure beautifully. For instance, Arista's shop, Cosmic Prisms, felt like a real haven filled with the scent of candles and the shimmer of crystals, contrasting with the bustling, sometimes judgmental tourist crowd outside. The way Dodd writes about Sedona’s sunsets, with their scattered blues and magentas, made me want to pack a bag and explore it myself. These serene moments are pierced by tension-filled scenes, such as the cliffside car crash that opens the story, which had me gripping the book tighter. The characters, however, are the heart of the novel. I found Arista particularly compelling as she wrestles with her past trauma while trying to navigate a new life. Her journey into aura reading and her curiosity about Trini's layered aura provided a sense of warmth and growth. Fergus and Fallon, with their dark ambitions and manipulative schemes, added a sinister depth. The tension between light and shadow, the nurturing bond of Bethie’s coven versus Fergus's malevolent rituals, kept me hooked. I especially enjoyed how Dodd wove moral dilemmas into the story, like Dustin's theft of the athame. It made me question loyalty, power, and consequence.

Moonset on Desert Sands delivers a satisfying blend of mystery, magic, and heartfelt relationships. It’s perfect for readers who love a bit of witchcraft with their whodunit or enjoy character-driven stories with supernatural undertones. Whether you're a believer in magick or simply someone who loves an atmospheric mystery, this book offers plenty of spells to capture your imagination.

Moonset on Desert Sands jumps into the action from page one and keeps you guessing throughout this tale of magical mystery and mayhem. Readers of Murder Under Redwood Moon will be thrilled to once again join Arista and her enchanting cast of friends and family as they use magic and courage to support each other as they solve mysteries and fight to stay alive.

Fresh from her brush with death at the hands of a serial killer, Arista hopes to focus on recovering and rebuilding her life while staying far away from her malevolent uncle. Sadly, he has other plans. Mix in her recovery from a broken heart and worry for a threatened friend, and you have one thrilling tale as Arista and her Auntie face off against a man twisted with evil intent.

For those new to the series, as I was, the novel can stand alone. Dodd ensures that readers have the background necessary to feel fully engrossed in the story. I do feel that reading the first book would have further enhanced my experience, but it wasn’t an impediment to jump into this second installment in the Murder, Tea, and Crystals series. The cast of characters can be a bit difficult to keep track of if the reader hasn’t experienced the first book in the series.

Additionally, this is not just a thriller focused on unraveling the mystery. Dodd enriches the story with insights into the world of these witches and their practices. I enjoyed the details of the items sold in the shop where Arista works, the reasoning behind different crystal and herbal choices in spells, and the deliberate thought given to her tea each morning. I had not realized how sensory witchcraft is, and was constantly considering how a certain blend of aromas might mix with each other as I read. I enjoyed discovering how they experience their lives and the world around them. This is what I adore about reading. I get to view existence from a perspective I hadn’t previously considered.

Moonset on Desert Sands is an entertaining thriller with a strong side of magical exploration. Readers of mysteries, thrillers, and tales of witches will enjoy every word.

With a traumatic year of fending off a serial killer behind her, Arista has settled contentedly into her temporary home with Auntie in Sedona, Arizona. She enjoys her new job selling all things metaphysical and even has her eye on the hot security guard, Dakota, after her recent breakup with Shane.

"She soaked in the beautiful sheen of his face and listened to the vibrating whir coming from deep within his chest." - One of my favorite quotes from this Sherri L Dodd book. Vivid, evocative, and moving. Just like all the writing.

I am so happy I have another book to read in Sherri L. Dodd's trilogy because I am loving her characters and her ability to spin thrill with fun and mystery as I read. MOONSET ON DESERT SANDS is set in picturesque Sedona (I love me some red rock and the descriptions are vivid and lovely) and follows Arista, whose had quite the year and is looking for a reprieve with her aunt in a new, quiet locale. You know how that whole song and dance goes in life, right? The very thing you want and long for tends to evade you when you go looking too hard for it, especially with a backstory like our dear main character has. What ensues is a story of suspense, adventure, and mystery...with key players stepping from the past into the present moment and threatening the future for more than one soul. There's so much to be certain of if you pick up this book -- you won't be bored, the twists will keep you guessing, and your heart will never be the same.

And it is so worth the journey.

I like the whole security-guard-is-hot subplot. For me, romance is always welcome in my fiction, and even more so when it's well-written like in this case. Dodd is skilled at weaving plot, character, and stakes so seamlessly onto the page, you feel like you're living alongside someone's real life. She makes you want to keep reading more, and then she delivers time and time again, so you're not let down. At least, I wasn't. I have found nothing but charm and awesomeness in her work.

Now, I need to pace myself when reading the third-in-series. I'm not ready for it to be over :(

Arista Facing Her Fear and the Ultimate Challenge

The second book in the Murder, Tea and Crystals trilogy Moonset of Desert Sands is a paranormal mystery full of thrill, suspense, budding love story, and unexpected twists that will have you on the edge of your seat. In the momentous prologue, Dustin is involved in the secret plot with Fergus to steal athame from the evidence bag and bring it to him, only to be attacked by two malicious men on the way and be thrown into the canyon.

In this book, Arista lives with her aunt Bethie in Sedona, Arizona, where his evil and murderous uncle Fergus can’t find her. She has adjusted in her new life by working as a storekeeper selling metaphysical objects. But lately, she’s been experiencing fainting spells, and her intuitive powers are gaining strength. Her supernatural talents make her vulnerable while her uncle endlessly hunts for her everywhere by sending his men to have what she has.

This story has many characters and it alternates between multiple points of views. If it wasn’t for that, the plot wouldn’t have been as exciting to read. Arista’s emotional growth, her friendly and loving bond with her aunt Bethie who selflessly protects her, her crush on Dakota, the store owner’s son, and the mysterious personality of Trini who drops by at the store often and has acquainted with Arista, makes it a heart-warming and an anticipatory read. I was afraid for Arista when her uncle was close to finding her. But after enduring trauma and separation from her parents, she has grown stronger. I knew she could face anything and protect herself if her uncle attempted to kill her. The book has intense scenes with a fair balance of light-hearted ones which is great. Although that, I felt some parts were a bit slow-paced which drifted my attention from the main plot.

Overall Rating = 4.5

Storyline & Concept = 4
Writing and Delivery = 4.5
Editorial = 5

Moonset on Desert Sands is the second book in the Murder, Tea & Crystals – A Trilogy series and follows Arista, a gifted young woman seeking refuge in Sedona with Auntie after a traumatic event in her hometown of Boulder. When she begins experiencing mysterious fainting spells, Auntie makes a sudden decision sending them on a pivotal trip back home. As eerie events unfold and the looming threat of her dangerous Uncle Fergus grows closer, the reader is taken through a nerve-wracking supernatural journey.

Sherri’s use of symbolism enhances the story’s magic, offering subtle foreshadowing and deepening the reader’s anticipation. The novel’s first half introduces numerous mysterious characters, giving the sense that much remains unknown. At first, I worried that the shifting perspectives and many characters might leave loose ends, but the author skillfully connects most of it together in a surprising and satisfying way. However, a deeper understanding of her uncle’s motives early in the book may have enhanced the reading experience.

Despite not reading the first book, the novel was easy to follow. While some elements would resonate more with prior knowledge, the story stands well on its own. With smooth pacing and compelling storytelling, this book would even engage those who don’t typically read supernatural fiction. A sought-after athame, supernatural symbolism, and deep family ties keep readers hooked until the last page.

Sublime Line: “Moonset on Desert Sands delivers supernatural storytelling with vivid settings, unfolding surprises, and a uniquely complex family bound by magic—whether used for good or something worse.”

Moonset on Desert Sands is a riveting story that quickly pulled me into a world of tension and suspense. Within the first scene, I was gasping with dread and sitting on the edge of my seat.

Sherri L. Dodd’s knack for vivid description made the world she created come alive. Her distinct imagery contributed to the authentic voice of the story; I learned much about spirituality, mysticism, and the practices of the New Age community. Her lyrical passages also helped build foreshadowing and created a clear setting. One of my favorites was about the Sedona night sky:

“The speckling of celestial diamonds on deep, midnight blue set a bold contrast to the orange, glass-pebbled fireplace.”

The touch of horror and gore in the story does not fit my usual taste. However, those elements are integral to the suspense genre, and the author deftly uses them to enhance the book.

I appreciated the author’s cast of characters and the way each person served the plot. From Arista’s auntie to the local coven, to the relentless antagonist, and all the supporting characters along the way, Dodd had a plan and a purpose for every individual. While these story threads may have seemed disparate as they were introduced, the end of the story weaves them together in a clever, impressive way.

As for the finale, I especially liked the way that, while she didn’t end the story on a cliffhanger, she left the door wide open for the next book in the series. Speaking to that, while the story is self-contained, I think I would have benefited from reading the first book in the Murder, Tea, and Crystals trilogy, Murder Under Redwood Moon.

I enjoyed Moonset on Desert Sands and highly recommend it, at 4.5 stars, to anyone who likes suspenseful, occult reads.

I really enjoyed reading Murder Under Redwood Moon. It’s a gripping and clever story that mixes paranormal romance, horror, and mystery in a unique way, with plenty of suspense and twists. Moonset on Desert Sands is up to the previous novel and another well plotted and gripping story
Dodd deftly weaves horror, mystery, and a touch of romance into a narrative that is twisty, heartfelt, and atmospheric.
Arista is a compelling lead: smart, guarded, and quietly courageous. Her journey through grief and danger is layered with emotional nuance, and her interactions with a diverse cast of characters add depth and color to the story. Each supporting character feels distinct, with their own secrets and motivations that enrich the central mystery.
The setting is a standout: Sedona’s red rock landscapes and spiritual undercurrents create an eerie, otherworldly backdrop that amplifies the novel’s tension. Dodd’s prose captures the desert’s haunting beauty, grounding the supernatural elements in a vividly real world.
The mystery itself is well-structured: red herrings, revelations, and emotional stakes keep readers engaged. While the pacing occasionally lingers in introspection, the payoff is satisfying. The book stands on its own, but clearly builds toward a larger arc, leaving readers eager for the final installment.
Entertaining and atmospheric, Moonset on Desert Sands is a strong follow-up that balances suspense, character, and setting with finesse. If you enjoy paranormal mysteries with emotional depth and a dash of desert magic, this one is worth your time.
Many thanks to Sherri L. Dodd, Black Rose Writing, and Black Tide Book Tours for this digital copy, all opinions are mine.

A mystical mystery that intrigued me about magick, but also pulled me into a story that puts Arista in her uncle's crosshairs.

This is the second in the series, and I highly recommend picking up book one before diving into this one. Many things regarding Arista's background and the danger she is facing will make more sense.

I read the first book a few days ago, but this book caught my attention. Perhaps because I had a better sense of the characters, Arista can be naive, but she is also intelligent. While I couldn't relate to her personally, I was enthralled with discovering more about her and her powers. Having two parents with magical gifts is amplified in their child.

In the first book, we learn about Arista's uncle Fergus. He is more of an outlier in that novel. However, he comes front and center in this novel, trying to find his niece and gain her powers. There is a significant twist regarding Fergus at 40% of the way—one I was not expecting. Fergus continues to hunt his niece, but will he succeed? You will have to read the book to find out.

There is also the theme of family. Arista is reconnected with her parents, but only to have a loss. Her aunt Bethie can be an interesting character. There are times when it seems like she is abrupt, but perhaps because she knows time is of the essence.

The author paints a picture of Sedona, and I could see it in my mind. The same goes for the town of Boulder Creek. The variety of characters adds to the dimension of the story and enhances it.

If you enjoy magical realism, you will want to give this series a whirl. I learned a few new things, and it left me curious to learn more.

We give this book 4 paws up.

I am incredibly grateful to Sherri L. Dodd for the opportunity to read and review Murder Under Redwood Moon. Being selected to explore this captivating story before its official release has been such a treat, and I can’t wait to share my thoughts on it with all of you. A huge thank you to Sherri L. Dodd for their generosity and for making this advanced reading experience possible.

I am so excited to be back in the world of murders, tea and crystals! Book two was just as good as the first which isn’t at all common. The best news is, it’s not over yet. According to my sources this is a trilogy so we haven’t seen the end of Arista and Bethie just yet!

Moonset on Desert Sands just kept me guessing the whole time but I must say, on the odd occasion that I actually sussed something out I did feel very accomplished.

Just like the first, Murder Under Redwood Moon, this book is full of twists and turns and I’ve been absolutely hooked. I can’t believe I have to wait for the third one now but you can count on the fact I’ll be reading it as soon as it’s available.

Well written, well paced and characters that you just can’t help but get invested in. And I love the witchy encyclopaedia at the back of the books for those not familiar with some of the terminologies used. It’s so thoughtful and really cements that the author cares that their readers know exactly what is going on and what everything means.

Sherri L. Dodd, you are absolutely magnificent and I hope you are so so proud of what you have created.

Take note - this is the second book in the series, and I'd recommend reading them in order.

In an effort to gain distance and start the process of healing after the traumatic events of the last novel, Arista has relocated to Sedona with her aunt, leaving boyfriend Shane and her friends behind in Boulder Creek. A long distance relationship isn't in the cards for Arista and Shane, and a local security guard catches her eye. After obtaining a job in a metaphysical store and making new friends, her hopes for a quieter life go out the window. Uncle Fergus is still intent on sacrificing Arista and gaining her power and with more allies, his reach stretches even further.

Atmosphere continues to be a strong point with this series. I've never visited Sedona, but I feel as if I have from the author's vivid descriptions of the charming town and surrounding desert setting. Arista's character arc grows as her priorities shift from the last novel, primarily because she's fully aware of what's at stake when it comes to Fergus. Romantic relationships take a backseat to safety for herself and her family. A heartfelt reunion provides bittersweet moments and a new beginning, but also a path for healing. I might need to have some words with the author about the fate of one character after my hopes were crushed - no spoilers.

With an action-packed ending, I'm anxious to see the direction the next book takes and also interested to learn how Arista's power develops. Recommended to readers who enjoy high stakes, plenty of secrets, and paranormal and mystical elements.

I really enjoyed Moonset on Desert Sands, especially how it blends mystery, magic, and emotional healing into one gripping story. From the start, I felt pulled into Arista’s world as she tries to rebuild her life after everything she has been through. There is a strong sense of lingering trauma here, and it made her feel very real to me. She is not perfect, she is not fearless, and that honestly made me root for her even more.

The setting plays a huge role in the atmosphere. Moving between the desert and the redwoods creates a moody, almost haunting backdrop that perfectly fits the tension of the story. I loved how the author weaves everyday struggles together with supernatural danger. Nothing ever feels over the top. Instead, it feels personal, like the weight keeps quietly building until you cannot ignore it anymore.

What stood out most to me was Arista’s emotional growth. She is forced to face heartbreak, fear, and uncertainty all at once, and watching her push forward anyway was powerful. The relationships in the book add real depth, and the touch of romance brings warmth without taking away from the suspense. The mystery kept me guessing, and there were moments where I genuinely felt uneasy in the best way.

The book is a great pick for readers who enjoy magical mysteries, character-driven stories, and a main character who keeps fighting even when things feel DARK and overwhelming.

Sherri L. Dodd writes a suspenseful tale with Moonset on Desert Sands

Moonset on Desert Sands brings readers in the life of Arista, who is grappling with her past while striving to embrace her future. As she reevaluates her life, Arista questions whether she ever truly saw the truth or her own version of reality. This second volume in the Murder, Tea & Crystals Trilogy by Sherri L. Dodd showcases the author's vivid imagination and storytelling prowess. The narrative introduces Arista's supernatural abilities and those of her Auntie, weaving in improbable and impossible elements alongside a series of twists surrounding an unusual death. The desert setting adds layers of intrigue and engagement to the story. As danger shadows Arista and her strange fainting spells reveal more of her latent powers, her devilish uncle Fergus further complicates matters, leading to chaos. Yet, Arista's determination and tenacity shine through, proving her strength even at her weakest moments. Sherri L. Dodd's imaginative storytelling makes this tale an absolute page-turner, one that readers will find hard to put down. Moonset on Desert Sands is a definite recommendation by Amy's Bookshelf Reviews. I read this book to give my unbiased and honest review. Amy's Bookshelf Reviews recommends that anyone who reads this book also write a review.

Witches, family and friends in peril.

The title is misleading as only the beginning is set in the desert and the most significant action is in lush forest. This is the second book in the series and although it might work as a standalone, you would miss the point and importance of several scenes which set up the saga of a young girl in peril from her uncle who is intent on killing her so he can acquire her mystical powers.

It does develop our heroine's story as she is now a young woman and negotiating her romantic life in two locations. The first part sees her in the Arizona desert and we learn more of her parents who had left her in the safekeeping of her great aunt. There are also themes of spirit posession, the relevance of which emerges as the story unfolds. I found it a difficult read in terms of taking a lot of time with not much progress. The author can show, but I felt there was a lot of telling and unecessary flowery description. There are details of witch rites and practices as well as tea and other brew recipes. The climax felt confused and left an unresolved plot development and relationship.

At the end of the book there is a resource library used by the author and an abbreviated dictionary of witch terms and characters used in the text.

I received a free advance review copy, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

📖 Title: Moonset On Desert Sands
✍️ Author: Sherri L. Dodd
⭐️ Rating: (5 out of 5)
📅 Date Finished: October 26th, 2025
—————————————————————————
🧵 Quick Summary:
After a traumatic year facing a serial killer, Arista Kelly has moved to Sedona, Arizona to regroup and work at her aunt’s metaphysical shop. But when she begins having fainting spells, she and Auntie decide to return to Arista’s old home of Boulder Creek — only to discover that the danger she thought she left behind is closer than ever. With her dangerous uncle Fergus back in play, a desert death, and a stalker closing in, Arista must confront heartbreak, betrayal, and a hidden supernatural threat that won’t let her escape.
💭 What I Loved:
- The perfect flow through the entire book
- The strong female characters
- The paranormal mystery aspect of it.
📌 Favorite Character:
Astra is my favorite character. She’s gone through so much in the first two books and she keeps going. She does show that she’s still vulnerable through it all though. I love that realistic vibe about her.
🧠 Notable Quote:
“Witches are not superhumans. We are simply intuitive people with a little extra gift. Sometimes we are spot-on and sometimes we miss the mark.”
🗣️ Final Thoughts:
This is the second book in a series. It might be a trilogy. I’m not sure. Some might consider the first two standalone, but I don’t. There are too many connecting pieces between the first and second book to read them alone in my opinion. That and the fact that both are strong reads, why not just go ahead and read them both? I wouldn’t recommend in one sitting though.

In this second of the series, Arista had to go into hiding after her encounter with the serial killer. In her desert placenta she meets new friends, enhances her powers and learn her uncle is after her with more vigor. I discovered Arista and Shane had broke up due to the distance of their relationship. Now I was wondering she had only been gone for six months so why was it so difficult to have a long distance relationship? I had a feeling as the book went on that Arista needed all kinds of life experiences in order to grow as a person and a witch. There were a few times I thought Arista was going to give up and return back to her redwoods. Her auntie was able to bring her down. Little did the reader know auntie was preparing her for the hardest challenge of Arista’s new path. Things became frightening when her uncle put real effort into finding her. He was obsessed with gaining her ‘power’. He used many of his own tricks to trap her. When disturbing things began to happen Arista realized she had to get over herself and put the work in to stopping her uncle. Even through the losses were extreme Arista became a new person and a new lust for life. Other things happen so I look forward to book three.

Moonset on Desert Sands by Sherri L. Dodd Is book two in the
Murder, Tea & Crystals - A Trilogy.
This book starts out a year after book one and Arista and her Aunt are are staying in Sedona, Arizona. Her world has completely changed in the last year. No longer is she in her comfort zone of Boulder Creek. Leaving all her friends and boyfriend Shane behind.
Taking a trip with her Aunt, leads her back to her parents. Only to find her mother not doing well. Arista isn’t sure where all of this will fit into her new life.
Arista starts having her fainting spells again and her Auntie believes she needs to return and find the answers in Boulder Creek. But going back means Arista must face her past with Shane, and what her life has become now. With her estranged Uncle Fergus still looking for her. Arista has no idea what is coming her way.

I thoroughly enjoyed the continuation of this story. With bridging the story between Boulder Creek and Sedona - I absolutely loved the new community Arista made in her time in Arizona. I look forward to continuing this story in book three.
Magickal and mysterious - this story did not disappoint!
