Kate Brody 2: ‘Dead End’ is even better than the first one.

I thoroughly enjoyed ‘The Ones Who Care’, Book 1 in The Kate Brody Crime Mystery Series by Louise Vetroff, so I was eagerly anticipating the release of the second installment. Everything I loved about the first story is present in ‘Dead End’, but I found myself even more intrigued and engaged this time around. There’s nothing like catching a serial killer in a race against time to keep you on the edge of your seat!

‘Dead End’ begins in medias res where the reader is witness to a gruesome murder at the hands of an unidentified killer. We soon learn that there have been a series of homicides perpetrated by a serial killer nicknamed ‘The Horned Serpent’. I’m a fan of psychological thrillers, and the background story of the killer’s childhood, trauma, and obsessions provided an enthralling foundation for the twisted cat-and-mouse game Detective Kate Brody soon finds herself in. Not only has Kate become the lead investigator, but her personal life entwines with the mystery and danger, making this a page-turning read you won’t want to put down.

Like the first book, ‘Dead End’ has well-developed supporting characters who challenge, inspire, and move Kate, which propels the narrative forward when needed, and slows it down for more introspection at the perfect moments. I love the pacing and found myself terrified, entertained, and emotional in equal measure.

If you’re looking for a fast-paced thriller with a likeable female lead, a great mystery, and well-written prose, ‘Dead End’ should be on your ‘to-be-read’ list. 5 stars all the way! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
