I will start off by saying I very much enjoy this series. I think it’s witty and the humor is a bit off key but it’s most definitely lol funny to me. There were a lot of big changes in this book. Elmo went from fading into the background to front and center in a lot of ways and no so afraid to show his wealth in small ways. I just think that while his bumbling way of investigating does fondly remind me of Colombo there was a lot of missed opportunities here. The victim was a huge reason in his drastic lifestyle change but there was only a brief minute where he was under suspicion. There’s wild crazy theories being thrown around right and left but no real proof and one really logical explanation that gets almost no traction whatsoever. In contrast when Nic was implicated in the death of the person who was putting her out of business that was the sole focus and no matter what it was like lasered in and Elmo has to go through hoops to get anything or anyone else even considered. I think I also could’ve done with a little less name dropping of detective shows and characters. It got to be a bit much.
All that being said was this a good read yes. Did it take the scenic route to get to the heart of the matter also yes. Not my favorite book in the series but still all in all a good read.

I enjoyed this book but the first book is still my favourite. This book continues on from the last book with Elmo having pasted on the reins to his critter removal service and taking over as owner of the Sea Breeze Resort and Condominiums. Which in my opinion is a shame because I thought the antics with the critters and his loaner personality was what set the series apart from other books. Although the murder and mayhem hasn't stopped with the new job. The humour and new problems at work (such as fancy dress costumes) are still fun and its worth a read. The mystery was good and got quite twisty towards the end, this did mean Elmo ended up accusing a number of the suspects of the murder but no worries he figured it out just in time and things got nicely wrapped up. I had guessed who was behind the murder but not the who. For a man (Elmo) who in the first book would rather spend time with animals than people, he has certainly come a long way and made a number of friends. Which is good because the friends and quirky cast of unusual characters is what has me wanting to return back to the series again when the next book comes out.
Halloween is a great time for costumes and parties but for Elmo isn't not so good when your car finds a dead body on your resort grounds. Especially when the dead man turns out to have been poisoned and has a connection to a past that he would rather forget. Worried that the police will blame him or one of his staff, Elmo jumps right into the investigation. How did somebody get close enough to him to poison him? And more importantly did he know he was staying in a resort that Elmo owned?
I was given this free review copy book at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

I am an ARC reader and this is my honest opinion. I love this series by J C Kenney featuring Elmo Simpson and a cast of quirky characters living in Paradise Springs in the Florida Panhandle. Even from book 1 on, each book feels like dropping in to visit old friends. Elmo is a multi millionaire former tech expert who likes to live a quiet life. He's had more than his share of problems in the past, including a breakdowns that saw him hospitalised for a time and suffering panic attacks afterwards. His critter removal service was perfect for several years until, in a public spirited move, he bought the Sea Breeze resort, saving lots of jobs and a profitable attraction for the area. Only his girlfriend and his closest friends know his secrets. Including the police chief to whom he's given the credit each time he's solved a murder - albeit in his own inimitable way. To everyone else he's just Elmo. I didn't work out whodunit until Elmo did. I'm looking forward to visiting again in the next book.

Dead in the Ditch is the 3rd book in J.C. Kenney’s Elmo Simpson Mysteries. Like the prior books, it has humor, as well as a terrific whodunnit. Elmo lives in Paradise Springs, Florida where he is the new owner of the Sea Breeze Resort. He has a condo there with his cat Oscar. As the book opens it is Halloween and Elmo is attending a costume party with his girlfriend Nic at their friend’s bar. They are hoping to win the best couples costume. They see some of the eccentric people in their town at the party. The next morning, Elmo takes his cat out around the resort for a walk and the cat finds a dead body in the ditch. He calls the police so they can discover who the victim is and what happened to him. It turns out that the dead man is one of Elmo’s former business partners who stole his computer code that he had written and made him millions. He realizes that the guy had been at the party the night before with the woman they called the Black Widow. He didn’t recognize him as it had been a long time and his appearance had changed. It has been classified as a homicide.

Elmo decides to investigate to figure out who killed his former partner. He plans to work with the police chief as he did in the prior murders. Elmo goes to Gretchen, his operations manager to enlist her help in speaking to the employees who may have information. He also talks to his friends to get their thoughts on the events of the night before. Elmo creates a list of suspects which includes the Black Widow, the deceased’s ex wife, one of the cleaning staff, the bouncer from the dive bar the victim went to after the party and his girlfriend who worked at the resort. It is strange for Elmo to suddenly have his past show up in his current life.

The story is clever and well thought out. It is easy to read and holds the reader’s attention. The clues add a lot to the plot. Every time I thought I figured out who the killer was, I would realize I was wrong. The author was very creative with the characters as well as their nicknames. I was laughing at many of the descriptions and also feeling sympathetic for some of events in the characters past. The various interactions between the different people are enjoyable to read. The ending, however, was a shock to me. I definitely didn’t see that coming. This was a terrific book that I heartily recommend.

I was fortunate to receive this ARC from Tule Publishing in exchange for my honest review.

Okay, y’all—Dead in the Ditch had me hooked from the first line, and not just because I have a soft spot for grumpy men with cats and questionable luck. Elmo Simpson? He’s an absolute hot mess delight and I’m completely invested in his chaos. This series has been one wild ride, but book 3 just might be my favorite so far.

First off, Halloween in Paradise Springs? Yes, please. Give me pumpkins, mystery, and a man whose cat disappears just in time for him to trip over a dead body in a ditch. Because of course.

And not just any body—nope, it’s his old nemesis. The one who stole from him. The one he may or may not have muttered threats about once upon a time. So naturally, the whole town side-eyes him like he’s got a knife hidden in his sock.

I was howling at some of the locals’ reactions (J.C. Kenney nails that small-town gossip energy), but at the same time, I felt for Elmo. He’s just trying to run a dang wildlife removal business, keep his resort from going under, and find his cat for crying out loud. The man did not ask for a murder mystery to land at his boots.

And Oscar—his cat? MVP. I mean, he doesn’t get many pages, but that furball is practically the heart of the whole story.

What I love most is that Elmo’s not some polished, clever Sherlock Holmes type. He’s stubborn, a little cranky, and just figuring things out as he goes—with plenty of missteps, awkward run-ins, and a whole heap of small-town drama. His sleuthing feels real—like if your neighbor who owns a riding mower and too many plaid shirts decided to solve a murder.

The mystery itself had solid twists, great pacing, and some real emotional weight, especially as pieces of Elmo’s past come into play. It’s not just whodunnit—it’s why and how and can Elmo get out of this without getting hauled off in handcuffs or losing everything he’s trying to rebuild?

If you love quirky characters, a side of humor with your homicide, and a sleuth who’s equal parts grump and grit, Dead in the Ditch is an absolute treat. Especially with that Halloween flavor and a plot that ties past secrets to present danger.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ – Elmo might not be everyone's idea of a hero, but he’s mine. Grumpy, loyal, and always knee-deep in trouble. I’ll follow him—and Oscar—through every twist and turn.

It’s Halloween night but Elmo never expected to find the dead body of Breck, his old nemesis, on his resort’s property. It’s no treat to figure out who murdered Breck, but Elmo has no choice. All the fingers are pointing at him, but he didn’t do it. Can Elmo unmask the killer before it’s too late?

Dead in the Ditch is a twisty cozy mystery I couldn’t put down. Between Elmo’s funny one-liners, engaging characters, descriptive narration, and a mystery filled with dead ends and false clues, my head spun off my shoulders trying to solve it before Elmo did. Spoiler alert: the ending shocked me.

J.C. Kenney is back with another humorous cozy mystery. The characters, especially Elmo, steal the show. J.C. Kenney flexes his writing muscles with the complex investigation. Kudos to J.C. Kenney for the red herrings and intricate plot twists.

Dead in the Ditch is a feast for cozy mystery readers. Fans of Jana Deleon and Toni McGee Causey will love Dead in the Ditch. I can’t wait to read more Elmo and Nic adventures.

Another winner!

I just love this series.

In this book, Elmo, who's now running the resort he bought, finds a man dead in a ditch on the property. He looks familiar, and it turns out to be someone from his past. Elmo has motive to have killed him, but knows he didn't. So to save his and his resort's reputation, Elmo sets out to find the murderer.

The characters in this book (the whole series, of course, are wonderful - quirky in some ways, and really well done. The story's told from Elmo's point of view, and his narrative is fun, interesting, and often witty. A solid story, told well, kept my attention and made me want to keep reading through to the end.

The book can stand alone, but you'll get even more out of it if you read the previous books, for background on the characters and past events.

Can't wait for the next book in the series - more, please!!

Dead in the Ditch by J.C. Kenney has Elo dressing up for Halloween. The third Elmo Simpson Mysteries Book also has him okay with a boring management duty after getting involved in two murder investigations. Well, that lasted about 10 minutes before life goes crazy. Another death, this time Elmo is the main suspect. What a ride this story is as Elmo tries to clear his name and find the true killer.

Many cozy mysteries have the main sleuth b the suspect in the first book. It is what causes them to become amateur sleuths. You can count on this author doing things differently. A serious position for Elmo to find himself but it does reveal his life before the move to Paradise Springs, Florida. A whopper of a story. Need a good mystery, and need a good laugh then Dead in the Ditch by J.C. Kenney is the book for you.

What a terrific story! This is the third Elmo Simpson book in the series and they keep getting funnier and more outrageous while providing us a wonderful cosy murder mystery.

In this adventure, we revisit Elmo Simpson in Paradise Springs, Florida. Again we see all the delightful oddballs of Paradise Springs from the Deputy called ‘Spock’ for obvious reasons, to the Fortune Teller, who visions into the Neverland seem limited, and the ‘Vampire’ who has a skin disease only letting him wander the streets at night. There is a surprise ending which I didn’t see coming, but it was truly exciting. I found this book captivating, the characters interesting and Elmo a wonderful Private Detective. I look forward to the next book in the series.

Dead in the Ditch is a captivating addition to the Elmo Simpson Mysteries series, set in the quirky community of Paradise Springs, Florida. The story follows Elmo Simpson, a resort owner who unexpectedly finds himself embroiled in a Halloween mystery.

Elmo’s voice is witty and relatable, making him a protagonist you root for. His humorous struggles with costumes add a delightful charm.

Dead in the Ditch is a fun, cozy mystery that combines humor, heart, and a touch of suspense. It’s perfect for readers who enjoy character-driven stories with a strong sense of place and community. While a few moments drag slightly, the overall experience is enjoyable and leaves you eager for more.

Elmo Simpson is a hoot! He is a wild animal removal specialist which around my neck of the woods, east Texas, means he has got to be a person with a wild sense of adventure with a dose of crazy thrown in! In this book, Elmo goes searching for his beloved kitty Oscar when he stumbles across his arch nemesis in a ditch, dead as a doorknob. Everyone thinks Elmo is the killer so he sets out to find the real culprit. Absolutely love this series. You'll laugh out loud, guess who done it and get some insight into life out in the boondocks! Jump right in folks for a grand time! I received an advance review copy for free and I am leaving this review involuntarily.

A fast-paced entertaining story.

Elmo Simpson has finally left the critter removal business and is enjoying the easy life running the Sea Breeze Resort. But Elmo’s life quickly changes course when someone from his past turns up dead at his resort. To save his reputation, Elmo puts his sleuthing skills to work to find the killer. This book is a great addition to the series. As with the rest of the books, I just couldn’t get enough. It’s always fun to return to Paradise Springs and it’s quirky and fun characters.

This one was was way above my pay grade. Lol. I never figured out how deep and wide the deceit was woven. This was a great intricately woven web of deceit. Leave it to Elmo to be in on it all and not quit until it's

solved. I had my sights set on someone else as the perpetrator, but I was totally wrong. This was a page turner that will keep you guessing until the end. I voluntarily read a free copy of this book provided by book sirens and am giving an honest opinion.

Dead in the Ditch is Book 3 in the Elmo Simpson Mystery Series by J.C. Kenney.

I really enjoy this series, and this latest book was fantastic.

Elmo is running his new resort and finds a dead man on his property. The thing is, the man looks familiar, someone from Elmo's past. Elmo investigates to clear his name and the name of his resort.

This is a very fun, character driven mystery. I really enjoy Elmo.

Elmo Simpson purchased Sea Breeze Resort and Condominiums. When looking for his lost cat he discovers a dead man. Since he has history with the man he must find who the killer is as he is a suspect since the man stoled something worth millions from him. This is a very well written mystery, hard to put down. Keeps you guessing to the very surprising end.

A light, entertaining, cozy mystery. This is an enjoyable series that I hope continues for a few more books. Love the television show references. Lived in Indianapolis for many years and vacationed in Florida so the familiarity of locations helps. Clever mystery. I am never certain whether I am happier to have guessed correctly or to be surprised by the culprit. Thanks to Booksprout for providing a copy. My review is voluntary.

This was a really fun read. I liked the way that the author dropped household names of the rich and famous into his protagonist's comments. His protagonist was very self deprecating and funny and almost a bit geeky.
I loved the long suffering police chief.
The mystery was satisfyingly complex while appearing straight forward.
I look forward to reading the next book in the series.

The Elmo Simpson Mysteries are such fun books to read. The mysteries are well written, and I had no idea who the villain was until the end. The characters are quirky and fun. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. It is not necessary to read the books in sequence. I read the first but missed the second. It did not keep me from enjoying reading "Dead in the Ditch." I strongly recommend reading this book.

I am loving this series so much. Each book just gets better and better. Elmo is cool. I love that he's a bit naive but so caring. And he's not in it to get accolades. Seven and Nic...their personalities are the best lol. The no BS attitudes and the way they back it up. Rambo....a league of his own. All the characters just grow on you so much. The mystery itself is so fun to try to figure out. Highly recommend.

I enjoyed this book. I haven’t read the others in the series, and while it was fine as a standalone, I think I would’ve preferred to read them in order for context.

The mystery was well thought out and kept me engaged. The characters were fun and well written. I really enjoyed reading this book and often didn’t want to put it down (but fell asleep reading because I’m sick). Highly recommend if you’re looking for a lighter mystery with a fun, beachy setting.
