Nurse Deidre Steen and Dr. Calvin Garrett don’t realize it, but they’re about to get a second chance at love. Like usually happens though, true love never arrives without some pain. They had been childhood friends, separated when Calvin went off to school. Deidre’s faced much loss in that time: her husband, also a friend of Calvin’s, and her parents. Meeting up again in the halls of Yukon Valley Hospital takes them both by surprise, and they’re both determined not to impose on the other. But family and friends have a different idea, and Deidre and Calvin will find themselves entering into a false courtship to distract the town’s busybodies.
This book is centered in and around the Yukon Valley Hospital in Yukon Valley, Alaska. It’s filled with doctors, nurses, EMTs, support staff, and a good dose of emergency medical cases. The characters are well developed and face not only medical tragedies but also their own fears and grief, and they learn different ways to deal with those difficult emotions. Doing so will allow them to come to terms with other important feelings. I would definitely say that the theme of this book is aimed at adults. It gets quite hot and steamy at times.
This is book two in this series and follows closely on what transpires in book one. Reading the books in order will help the reader to understand the background of the story and the characters. I think it could be read as a standalone, but reading in order will help.
Yukon Valley is a small, rural Alaska town. It’s situated right at the foot of the Ray Mountain Range. When residents are again approached about allowing some interested parties passage on their lands to Bureau of Land Management properties, some unfriendly things start to happen.
I enjoyed this book. I did think that at times, the dialogue got a bit cheesy, but overall this friendship-to-lovers tale was enjoyable. The title of the book refers to the ice breaking up on the river, and a celebration that accompanies it. That reminded me of an episode of the TV show, Northern Exposure.
This was a quick, fun read. I look forward to the next book in the series.
I received an advanced reader copy of this book from the publisher, Tule. I thank all involved for their generosity, but it had no effect on this review. All opinions in this review reflect my true and honest reactions to reading this book
