Dorian Gray

Rate this book

A graphic novel that is completely faithful to the style of the original narration.
The vital pulse that impregnates the story beats underneath the decadent paganism that invokes pleasure and debauchery in equal terms.
Wilde reminds us that selfish hedonism inevitably leads to the most terrible solitude and Enrique Corominas' art evokes the degradation of Dorian intrinsically by creating an atmosphere that recreates the darkest side of the Victorian Era.
The drawings are beautiful and repulsive, like Dorian.
Poetry, horror and inmortality fused in hues of expert strokes, images that will remain imprinted in my retina forever.
Definitely a treat for all the senses, and the perfect gift from a friend who knows me too well.

Thank you to Titan Comics and NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.

A fantastic adaptation of the beloved gothic classic, I enjoyed this more than the original novel. The artist made some great visual choices, with the hedonistic life of Dorian vividly brought to life. I feel like this captured the spirit of the book in a very accessible way.
Victorian London is depicted colourfully, but with a sense of grime at the edges. I enjoyed reading this quite a bit.

This was such a beautifully dark and gothic graphic novel telling the classic story of The Picture of Dorian Grey. It stuck to the novel, giving a brief yet accurate depiction of the story readers may already know, but this time told through macabre and Tim Burton-esque artwork. I have really liked the story since reading it a few years ago, and I would say fans of the book will surely adore this graphic novel, it's captivating, haunting and so whimsically pretty- Dorian was captured perfectly!

4/5 🌟

I wasn't a fan of the artwork, I found it a bit to whishy washy.
The story was ok, I think I expected a more dramatic ending with the comic showing Dorian growing old but it was left in mystery, which didn't satisfy me.

Thanks Netgally and Titan for my copy

Super recomendado!

I came across some pages for this years and years and years ago and had to wait (impatiently) to be able to purchase it. The book isn't available in English but, that said:
1) It's a graphic novel so even if you can't read French, you can at least follow along, and there's not huge walls of text to have to translate, as it's mostly dialog so you can kind of pick your way through.
2) The art alone is worth it, and even if you can't read it, it's still a beautiful concept portfolio from start to finish
3) I assume if you've made it to something as niche as a visually lush, foreign language adaptation of Dorian Gray you are probably familiar enough with the story to follow along.
4) Much more interesting way to brush up on some French than certain language learning apps because that service doesn't offer Decadent Gothic literature.

Enrique's art is simply exquisite, done in murky peacock-tone watercolor (except where the color palette veers jarringly, which is a kind of horror and/or viewpoint device I hadn't previously considered) that captures the decaying ambiance of the world in which Dorian Gray finds himself. The progression of the portrait is unsettling but invites closer examination of all sorts of hidden details. There's all sorts of subtle textures throughout the book to delight any aesthete's senses. The character design is wonderful and there's even a little Easter egg of Wilde himself. In addition to the comic itself, there's a wealth of standalone illustrations to peruse.

Dorian Gray
Author: Oscar Wilde
Artist: Enrique Corominas
Published 2026 Titan Books
So graphic novels have a natural duality.
Art can initially catch the attention, and here artist Enrique Corominas has created a lusciously painted book. Some of the panels are seriously ‘wall-worthy’ they are that nice.
If you pick this one up and flip through the pages you will be drawn in based on the art.
As for the story, well Corominas has recreated a classic from a notable author, so one knows the core work is outstanding.
As noted on the Titan website this book is about the corruption of innocence.
“How easy it is for innocence to be corrupted. This is the crux of the story of Dorian Gray, a young handsome man from London who gets seduced by the hedonism of the upper class and the ultra-wealthy,” details the site.
“When eccentric artist Basil Hallward paints Dorian Gray, Basil and his wealthy friends are encapsulated with his beauty. Lord Wotton, a hedonistic aristocrat and one of Basil’s friends, introduces Dorian to a life of luxury and debauchery. A life without consequence.”
From there it’s a slippery slope to oblivion.
The Picture of Dorian Gray is an 1890 philosophical fiction and Gothic horror novel by Irish author Oscar Wilde. A shorter novella-length version was published in the July 1890 issue of the American periodical Lippincott's Monthly Magazine, while the novel-length version was published in April 1891.
While Wilde penned the core story more than a century ago, and Corominas kept the story as a period piece, the lesson here has an obvious relevancy today as well.
Overall, with the beautiful art and the classic story, this one does harken back to the ‘Classic Illustrated’ tales of my youth, albeit for a mature audience given its darker themes.
A fine read indeed.

A quite decent look at the Oscar Wilde novel, in graphic novel form that (apparently) has several nods to paintings of the time. Overall it shows the piece to have a balance that ages it somewhat – the painting that absorbs all the changes and all the sins a hedonistic life endures is there, but we never get a full grasp on just how sinful Dorian is. Yes, an actress friend besotted with him proves to be less of a performer than anyone thought and he leaves her, and yes he ends up a wrong 'un, but there's little of the in-between – the slow realisation he has carte blanche and that his dandyish looks will remain unsullied. Mind you, Hetty is not here either, among several tweaks made to the piece – but this does seem to include the mood cut out of the original by Wilde's magazine editor; certainly you can't read these pages without seeing the gay feelings on them.

Said pages are attractive, rendered in watercoloured style, and while liking the Dutch angle to disguise its wordiness, it makes for a decent portrayal of the piece. It doesn't quite have the oomph to shoulder this into the same category as Jekyll and Hyde, or any of the various other Fausts, but I don't think that oomph was there initially. So this comes as a pretty faithful adaptation, that I don't see Wildeans crying into their tea over. As for comics fans, it will not thoroughly disappoint, but may give too much that feels unfortunately bloodless. More sin, please!

A recommendation, but also a mere three and a half stars.

My first read of the year!!! I picked it up before going to sleep on the first night of the year, and it was a good start!!!

First of all, this is a really good adaptation!!! This is something I've missed with some of the latest graphic novel adaptations I read, this one has such a good balance with text, it relies mostly on dialogue, with some other small bits of text, exploring Dorian's mind and some weirder concepts.

Secondly, the book also restructures the story, making it shorter and more compact, picking up all the important bits - from the author's note you learn that he followed the earliest versions of the original, before it was edited into book form. You get an introduction from Dorian himself, and then you meet all the important characters and pulls you into this story!!

Now thirdly, I have to go into the art... which wasn't my favorite style - it's a bit too dark (and too cloudy if that makes sense...) - and I'll admit it does fit with the darkness of the story itself, it just isn't my favorite thing. Now, on the other hand, I absolutely love using the art on the chapter pages to see the portrait itself and the wasting and corruption of it all!!! It adds so much!!!

This was an excellent book!!! It just wasn't for me, but even then it's a very high 3 stars!!! It's one of the best graphic novel adaptations I've read, and I'll be recommending it, I'll just suggest you take a look at the art first!! :D

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for giving me this e-ARC to review.

This isn't a bad adaptation of the book but it does add a few things that I don't specifically recall from the book and of course doesn't have everything in it from the original source. We don't get any inner thoughts from Dorian but we did get some third person narration as the story continued about Dorian which really emphasised the feeling of watching a story from a distance for me.

It is a definitely a stylised art that will not be for everyone which is shown on the cover but I really loved the colours and the style for some of the characters. I wasn't the biggest fan of how Dorian was drawn but considering how beautiful of a man he is supposed to be, how can one portray that in a visual format.

I think this graphic novel would be best read (and appreciated) in a physical medium rather than digital so the art can really pop and so the font is a bit easier to read (it's still very readable, some fonts can be a bit harder for me to read digitally).

Thank you Titan Comics and NetGalley for the ARC!

A short but stunning adaption of the gothic classic, The Picture of Dorian Gray. Enrique Corominas' artwork is so beautiful to the point I didn't even need a story to go with it, some of the panels were so striking. However I felt he not only captured the original novel but made this adaption completely unique.

"At a glance, I knew his presence was so captivating that, if I let it, it would absorb my whole nature, my whole soul. My very art itself."

I love that the story and the artwork really leans into the debauchery, yet there are almost sinister touches throughout. I especially loved the progression of the portrait for each chapter title.

A must read for those that love visually impressive graphic novels, or want a new spin on an already beloved story.

Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde has always been a rather difficult novel to adapt. Other than a couple of fixed plot points, Dorian's shenanigans were always left to the imagination.

Here, Corominas stays very faithful to the novel while adding a few original touches to shake things up a little...in more ways than one.

The artwork was delightful to look at, and while it was a short read, it was an excellent one.
Recommended for anyone who is a fan of Wilde's classic.

Me gusto muchísimo.
