The Unraveling

As Black Friday shoppers crowd stores across the nation, a different kind of darkness descends. When a devastating virus begins to spread—erasing memories and identities before claiming its victims—former CDC coordinator Nate Holloway races against time to get his estranged daughter, Sophie, to safety. Their desperate journey to reach her mother in Stillwater forces them to confront not only the contagious but also the painful truth about the night that tore their family apart.

As the virus takes hold and society unravels, Nate and Sophie must navigate through dangerous territories, facing hostile survivors and their own haunting pasts. With the help of a dedicated group of survivors, they discover that the greatest threat isn't just losing their memories—it’s losing each other.

In a world where forgetting means death, remembering might be the bravest act of all.

THE UNRAVELING is a heart-wrenching post-apocalyptic thriller about family, redemption, and the lengths a father will go to protect his child—even if it means being forgotten.

This book was entertaining. There was no momentous action, just a steady level of tension. The interaction of the characters, particularly Nate and Sophie, elevated the book and got the extra star. The ending was a bit of a letdown, leaving much unfinished.

Jack Hunt’s The Unraveling is a masterpiece of post-apocalyptic fiction that gripped me from start to finish. This well-researched and meticulously detailed novel paints a horrifying and heartbreaking portrait of a world spiraling into chaos. Hunt’s vivid writing brings the collapse of society to life, making it feel all too real. I found myself completely immersed in their journey.

The Unraveling isn’t just a survival story; it’s a thought-provoking exploration of humanity at its breaking point. If you enjoy gripping, emotional, and terrifyingly realistic tales of endurance, this is a must-read. Highly recommend!

**Strong potential with too little space to shine**

Simply put, this book had no business being a stand-alone novel, given all the elements it introduced but didn't fully flesh out. There was too much story in too small a package. One book? One measly little book? Honestly, it really should have been its own series, even if just one or two more books, something to better satisfy the numerous plot points and unanswered questions. Sometimes it makes me wonder why author's make only certain stories a series and others, not so much. It can be a tad frustrating.

I was addicted to this thing almost right away. Jack Hunt wasted zero time getting to the point. Because really, now. Jack Hunt does what Jack Hunt does. He quite vividly (and expertly) compiled a rather horrific, gripping, and very dramatic story that is reminiscent of the movie "The Happening." People are going crazy, something infecting the brain, many of them killing themselves or others. I mean, this was great stuff with great character moments and tension. Imagery was properly grotesque and shocking, albeit a tad overly done to drive a point home.

Unfortunately, as the story progressed, certain aspects made me sigh in disappointment at what could have (and should have) been. The aforementioned imagery, for one thing. Jack Hunt really, REALLY wanted to be specific about the variety of inventive ways people are losing their cognitive function. In my opinion, though, he spent way too much time on this and not enough on developing his characters. It also didn't help the many plot conveniences being purposely placed for dramatic flair, even if they don't make sense. It made several events in the story feel forced and inauthentic.

All in all, this story had all the right things to work. It was still great where it counted. But that doesn't change the fact that all those things were simply not allowed to blossom in the way they should have, from plot points to numerous undeveloped characters to the story's literal end. And that was the biggest tragedy of all. The unmet potential.

great read!

In his latest novel, The Unraveling, Jack Hunt masterfully crafts a story of resilience and hope in the wake of a devastating global pandemic. Far from succumbing to the bleakness often associated with post-apocalyptic narratives, Hunt illuminates the enduring strength of the human spirit through the interwoven journeys of his diverse cast of survivors.
What truly sets The Unraveling apart is its focus on the power of connection and the rebuilding of a shattered world. Instead of dwelling on the initial cataclysm, Hunt plunges us into the lives of individuals grappling with profound loss but steadfastly clinging to the possibility of a better tomorrow. His characters are not just survivors; they are architects of a new society, finding innovative ways to collaborate, rediscover joy, and cultivate genuine relationships amidst the ruins.
Hunt's prose is both evocative and empathetic, drawing readers deeply into the characters' inner lives and their external struggles. He doesn't shy away from the harsh realities of their existence, yet he consistently peppers the narrative with moments of unexpected beauty, quiet triumphs, and the undeniable warmth of human companionship. The world-building is meticulous, painting a vivid picture of a changed Earth without sacrificing the intimate focus on personal journeys.
The Unraveling is more than just a tale of survival; it is a profound testament to our collective capacity for hope, adaptation, and the enduring need for community. It serves as a poignant reminder that even in the darkest of times, humanity's greatest strength lies in its ability to come together, to heal, and to strive for a brighter future. For anyone seeking a story that is both gripping and genuinely uplifting, Jack Hunt's The Unraveling is an absolute must-read.

A very different bioterrorism thriller, in the best possible way!

The Unraveling tells the story of an outbreak of a virus that erases memory, released by Chinese terrorists. The premise is quite unique and provides Avery engrossing reading experience. The writing is excellent, the plot superbly executed. The characters are dynamic, flawed and self-sacrificing. Descriptions of events and environments are vivid and clear. This book could be enjoyable for just about anyone who loves high quality thrillers! 5/5 stars!

Where do I start, In the beginning I know what the cause is and how it will affect people . Then you are introduced to the people that are involved in this horrendous attack on humanity and you're pulling for them to get through it and I couldn't put it down and read the whole book!! Gary 🇨🇦

I liked this book a lot. It was nearly like a zombie tale but much better. I hope you write a sequel with more about this family. The characters were captivating. I love this writer.

Great Read! This book captivated me from the first few pages. I've read many books with themes involving viruses, but this one really got to me. Really sorry to finish it, wish it could have gone on another couple of hundred pages, lol! I've read books by Jack Hunt before, but so far, this is my favorite. Won't spoil by revealing the ending, but it was bittersweet.
