Officer Naomi Cranston was framed for stealing cocaine from the evidence locker and coerced—through threats to her young son—into not fighting the charges. They threaten her son once again, but this time she’s not capitulating quietly. She hires Broussard Investigations to protect her and her son, to prove her innocence, and to put the real bad guys away.

As a former cop, Burke Broussard is well aware of the corruption in the New Orleans police department. He had always believed Naomi Cranston to be guilty and isn’t inclined to take her case. Until he sits down to listen to her side of things. Until he sees her tortured innocence written all over her beautiful face…

Book four in the New Orleans romantic suspense thriller series by Karen Rose, Knife in the Back, finally features the owner of a private investigation firm, Burke Broussard. Police Officer Naomi Cranston was framed for stealing from the evidence locker and coerced through threats to her son into not fighting the charges. She gets out after five years on a technicality. One year later, the crooks are back and want her to transport illegal product for them. They threaten her son again when she refuses. This time she hires Broussard Investigations to protect her and her son, to prove her innocence, and the get the real crooks identified and arrested.

Burke is a former cop turned private investigator and is aware of the corruption in the New Orleans police department. He’s not inclined to take Naomi’s case and has always thought her guilty until he listens to her story. Can he do all that Naomi wants when surviving the danger many be the best that they can do?

Burke is loyal, observant, and a protector of others. I enjoyed learning more about his past. Naomi is kind, smart, resilient, and a good investigator. It was great to see how their relationship developed over time as they worked together to solve her case. There are several other characters, but it is easier to keep track of them if you’ve read this series in order. Many are repeat characters, so it’s like getting together with old friends.

Once again, the author pulled me into the novel with an intriguing prologue that grabbed my interest and built on the story from there. The writing is fluid and the book did not feel like it was greater than 500 pages long. There are a few surprises along the way and a few action scenes. Much of the plot involves the investigation itself and the relationships of the characters, but there is also significant danger, tension, and suspense, making for a well-plotted story. The ends are tied up nicely except for one small point. Themes include trust, loyalty, found family, romance, relationships of all types, corruption, murder, and much more.

Overall, this is a suspenseful, intriguing, dramatic and entertaining novel with characters that had great chemistry, a splendid setting, and a story that kept me turning the pages rapidly. It also pulls on the heartstrings and on the reader’s emotions. Although this is part of a series, it can be read as a standalone, but I recommend reading the entire series. I can’t wait to read my next book by Karen Rose.

Berkley Publishing Group and Karen Rose provided a complimentary digital ARC of this novel via NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions expressed in this review are my own. The publication date is currently set for August 12, 2025. This review was originally posted at Mystery and Suspense Magazine.

I love Burke, and I was so excited to find this is his installment of the series. I see it is listed as book 4 of 4, and for that I am super sad. His team is the best, and this series is awesome. Please don’t stop writing this series!

I have to say, I could not stop reading this book. I was a little hesitant due to the subject listed, but the further I got into the story, the more fired up I got, right along with the characters.

Corruption is at its worst in the city, and Burke and associates dive deep into this whodunit. Loaded with twists you do not expect, this massive book is addictive!

Rose spins this story into a frenzied pace, especially since it’s Burke’s book, and we can see his vulnerability. His found family is everything, and it is under attack.

Namoi is an awesome character and a powerhouse once she gets going. She has lost much but is finding so much more. Knife in the Back is a tad overwhelming with characters, but all of them are a part of the story and needed.

Crazy paced, Rose keeps us on edge as attacks come from all sides, along with a shocking betrayal that will break your heart a bit. On the good side, the romantic bits are on point and so perfect!

Knife in the Back is so freaking good! Do not miss this book. Really! Rose is truly at the top of her game with this story! She is a master of pacing and riveting storytelling.

Be still my heart, Burke Broussard gets his HEA! You are gonna want to find a comfy spot and settle in, kinda like Burke in his Barcalounger. This one intrigued me from the beginning and the question of Why Naomi? It is a question that haunted me to the end, that and the identity of the mysterious head of the baddies. Burke has surrounded himself with a chosen family, but at times I felt he has a God Complex in that he thought he could control what happened to them and he should be able to keep them safe.

As an officer in charge of the evidence locker, Naomi Cranston took her job very seriously. Then she stopped to render aid at an accident and her would fell apart. Wrongly accused of stealing and trafficking drugs she went to prison, lost five years of her life and the respect of her son. Her conviction is overturned and now a year later she is again approached to run drugs, or they will harm her son. This time she won't go silent and seeks the help of Broussard Investigations.

Burke Broussard is a former cop and believed that Naomi was guilty. He has no interest in even talking to her until Sylvi, Naomi's boss, and Joy, Burke's office manager, gang up on him and force him to at least listen. Her story was chillingly similar to his own with the NOPD. He agrees to protect her son, Everett, and look into clearing her name. The dirty cops and Mr. Baddie are not pleased and attempt to kidnap the children of Burke's employees and his own godsons.

Burke gathers everyone at his large home in the French Quarter, but that won't help them find who is behind the attack. Each time they get close to some answers, someone dies, one right in front of him and Burke receives a message:

You've been living on borrowed time for years. Looks like your time is up.

My thanks to the Publisher and Author for providing a complimentary digital Advanced Reader Copy (ARC) of this novel via NetGalley. This is my fair, honest and personal review. All opinions are mine alone and were not biased in any way.

This is an entertaining, well-written, fast paced, romantic suspense novel. It has a likable, strong and capable female protagonist, an engaging male protagonist, appealing secondary characters, wit, murder, mystery, intrigue, suspense, twists and turns, and a gratifying conclusion. This novel is an excellent addition to Ms. Rose's fantastic New Orleans series. I have read every one of Ms. Rose's outstanding novels and she never disappoints her readers!

5 stars. I honestly don't know what to say anymore about Karen Rose's books that I haven't already said. Every time I read one of her books, I'm reminded how much I love romantic suspense, and in particular, Rose's romantic suspense. Knife in the Back is a little bittersweet, because I'm assuming it's the last of her New Orleans books, but, it's also the best. We've all been waiting for Burke's book, given that he's the fearless leader. And I think because he's the leader, and the attacks end up being targeted to the entire crew, you really feel the found family vibes. One of my favorite iterations of romantic suspense is when one of the characters is involved in law enforcement/ PI type of firm, and we actually get that with both characters. Naomi was an incredible heroine. She had some unimaginable things happen to her, and to see her bounce back from that and reclaim her life was honestly inspiring. The book is super fast paced, with tons of action. Honestly, the only negative I have is that this feels like the last book in the New Orleans series, and I don't want to say goodbye. Maybe Burke could hire some more employees? Regardless, I know whatever Rose comes up with next will be auto-read for me. And in the mean time, I will 100% be trying to make my way through her backlist.

Thank you so much to Rose, Berkley Romance (Berkley partner) and netgalley for the complimentary copy!

A career long fan of Karen Rose this book was missing her signature, multi character, multiple killings and actual suspense from start to finish.

Everyone is SO polite in this book. What gives ?
The editors —- they took out the grit and glossed over the plot. You’ll figure out who the villain is very early on and then it’s reading to watch it all unfold.

Suspend your beliefs, and just enjoy it as a popcorn thriller. It’s an easy read and you’ll root for Naomi.
This storyline should not have been brought back at such a ridiculous height. It’s impossible to believe so like I said, suspend your beliefs and go with it.

What isn’t missing is the intricate details that wove the plot together. A lot happens and all of it is tired together at the end in true K Rose fashion. Plus she always knows how to make you feel good after reading about such brutality 😄

This is a solid story but not the 5 star story we normally get. If you love the New Orleans crew then I hope you enjoy it much more than I did !

I've been a fan since she started publishing but I'm afraid this is my last Karen Rose read. She needs to go back to the grittiness and originality of her first books. It was readable, but the characters are all a bit meh

Knife in the Back was an exciting and intense read that had me hooked right from the start. I loved the characters, learning about them, and watching them open up and trust. I loved the suspense and intrigue, and the fantastic building details as clues were revealed. I had such a sense of urgency while reading because I had to know what would happen next.

I have loved Burke since book one and was thrilled he was getting a story. I loved learning about his past and the man he is today. He had such a big heart and would do anything for his found family. Naomi was awesome. After learning her history, I felt for her, but liked her strength and determination to do the right thing. I loved Burke and Naomi together. Their first meeting was a bit rocky, but as the story developed and they let their guards down, I loved how their sweet, building attraction grew and how they were there for one another in the middle of an extreme situation.

I loved getting the villain’s POV and trying to piece together who he was. There were very bad things happening, tension, gun fights, and drama, and I found it all thrilling! I loved the twists and turns around every corner and figuring out who was who and who did what. It was gripping!

I loved the action, drama, and the hints being laid out. I thought the build was perfectly timed and I flew through it. I adored the found family that’s been brought together throughout the series, and new people being brought into the fold. The scenes with all the different characters added a nice level of entertainment to the story, as well as a lot of emotional and heartfelt ones. This is officially my favorite story in the New Orleans series. I always vote for reading in order, but this book could 100% be read as a standalone story. This was a total hit!

Tense, twisty, and suspenseful!

Knife in the Back is a well-executed, sinister tale that takes you into the life of Naomi Cranston, a former police officer who, after having her family threatened and being incarcerated for five years for a crime she didn’t commit, decides to hire Broussard Investigations to protect her son and do whatever they can to take down those responsible.

The writing is tight and intense. The characters are vulnerable, cunning, and tenacious. And the plot is a cat-and-mouse game full of twists, turns, friendship, deception, desire, temptation, attraction, danger, romance, violence, and murder.

Overall, Knife in the Back is another adrenaline-pumping, unnerving, highly satisfying page-turner by Rose that has the perfect amount of suspense and romance to keep you guessing, engaged, invested, and entertained from start to finish while also doing a brilliant job of highlighting just how dangerous police corruption can truly be.

✅This book was a winner winner for me!
What an intriguing and intense plot!
Knife in the Back is a story about police corruption at its worst.
The main characters are Naomi and Burke. There are many supporting characters that really pull this story together.
I did guess the twist about 3/4 of the way into the book….and, what a twist it was. I could feel what was coming and couldn’t stop it! Which made me read way late into the night to see if I was right. And…..I was!
This story is filled with suspense, mystery, romance, corruption with a New Orleans setting.
I think this is one of the best books I have read by Karen Rose. Her writing is solid and engaging.
Though part of a series, I feel this can easily be read as a standalone read.
Thank you NetGalley, the publisher and author for the opportunity to read this book for my honest review. All opinions expressed are my own.

After serving five years in prison for a crime she didn’t commit, former officer Naomi Cranston just wants to move on and build a quiet life with her son. She was framed for stealing drugs from the evidence locker, and threats to her child forced her to stay silent. But now, the same criminals are back—and they want to use her flower shop to move their product. This time, Naomi refuses to back down.
Determined to protect her son and clear her name, she turns to Broussard Investigations for help. Burke Broussard, a former cop himself, knows how deep police corruption runs in New Orleans. He’s skeptical of Naomi at first—until he hears her full story and sees how much she’s suffered.
As the investigation heats up, so does their connection. But with danger closing in and secrets rising to the surface, Naomi and Burke must figure out if their bond can withstand not only the threats around them—but the truth itself.
"Knife in the Back" by Karen Rose is an emotional, action-packed thrill ride that blends suspense, danger, and redemption in all the right ways.
Naomi Cranston is a former cop who was wrongfully imprisoned for stealing drugs—a crime she didn’t fight because her young son’s life was on the line. Now free after serving five years, she’s doing her best to rebuild her life when the same criminals come back, threatening her all over again. But this time, she’s not going down without a fight.
She turns to Broussard Investigations for protection, and although Burke Broussard initially doubts her story, he quickly realizes Naomi is telling the truth—and she’s in serious danger. What follows is a fast-paced investigation full of shocking twists, deep-rooted corruption, and high-stakes danger.
This book had everything I love in a romantic thriller: a strong, resilient heroine, a protective and honorable hero, and a mystery that kept me guessing until the end. The chemistry between Naomi and Burke was powerful (though their quick connection felt a bit rushed at times), and I loved the found family dynamic among Burke’s team. Getting glimpses into the villain’s point of view added even more tension and intrigue.
The suspense had me hooked from page one, and the ending completely caught me off guard. Even though it’s part of a series, it works well as a standalone, and now I’m eager to go back and read the others. If you love romantic suspense with heart and grit, this one’s a must-read.

Knife in the Back by Karen Rose is the 4th book in her fantastic New Orleans series, which is part of her Romance Suspense mysteries. We meet Naomi Cranston, a former police officer, who was framed for a crime she did not commit, stealing drugs. She served 5 years in prison, and due to a technicality, she was released a year ago.  The same criminals who framed her, want to use her again, and Naomi refuses to back down, when she hopes to have Broussard Investigations help clear her name and protect her son, Everett.

Burke Broussard, a former cop, who owns Broussard Investigations, knows how deep police corruption runs in New Orleans. At first, he refuses to take her case, but when he listens to her that she was framed, and he changes his mind and takes her case.  In a short time, almost all of Burke’s employee’s children have been attempted to be kidnapped, and they all move into Burke’s, house (mansion) protecting each of them. They must find out who was behind Naomi’s prison term, and find out why those evil people who had her framed, are still trying to get her.  Who is the ringleader? The entire Broussard PI team will work together, which includes Burke, Molly, Val, Antoine, Andre and others who are part of the team. I really like how Burke and Naomi slowly began to have strong feelings for each other, as the chemistry between them was awesome.  I loved all the Broussard found family members, who were so great together.  Naomi’s mother also stayed in Burke’s place, giving her support; and in time Everett will discover that his mother was really innocent; having been brainwashed by his father. Her best friend, Sylvi, supported Naomi knowing she was innocent.

What follows is an intriguing, intense, exciting, and edge of your seat suspense story line that had me holding my breath so many times.  This story was very tense from all the way through, especially with the evil villains constantly killing off many innocent people.  As we raced to the wild climax, I prayed for the for the survival of all the good people, and the demise of the main villains. Their was a major twist later in the book, which Burke was in danger.  Knife in the Back was an emotional, thriller with fast-paced investigation with shocking twists, corruption, and high stakes danger.

Knife in the Back was very well written by Karen Rose, which was an intense thriller, with non- stop action all the way.  As I have said before, Karen Rose never fails to give us an amazing fantastic well written thriller that is intense, always on the edge, with fantastic characters, evil villains and a wonderful family you care for. If you love suspense, with a touch of romance and a thriller all the way, then look no further then Karen Rose.

Thank you to Berkley Romance for providing a free copy of this book. All opinions are entirely my own.

Naomi Cranston was a police officer who was framed for stealing drugs from the evidence locker. She was coerced into silence with threats against her son, leading her to serve five years in prison. She has since rebuilt her life by working at a flower shop and attempting to repair her relationship with her son. However, she and her son are thrown back into danger when the same criminals return and demand she transport their product. Determined not to back down, she turns to Broussard Investigations to protect her son. Meet Burke Broussard, a former police officer turned investigator, who initially doubts Naomi’s innocence but gradually becomes convinced by the truths that emerge.

Naomi is a fierce heroine I found myself cheering for, not just because of her strength, but because of how deeply she loves and protects her son. Burke’s transformation from skeptic to ally was one of my favourite parts. Their chemistry simmered beneath the surface, and I loved how their relationship developed from trust and resilience rather than insta-love.

What really struck me was how Karen Rose balanced suspense with heartfelt moments. The action had me rapidly turning pages, but it was the emotional scenes, like mother-son bonding, the growing relationship between Naomi and Burke, and the sense of family at Broussard Investigations, that made the book truly memorable.

This was my first time reading Karen Rose, and I was blown away by how gritty and fast-paced the story was. The characters felt so real and human, and I connected deeply with them. Knife in the Back was an intense, thrilling read full of heart, leaving me eager to explore more of Karen Rose’s work.

AUDIOBOOK REVIEW; AUGUST 19, 2025
Narrator: Lee Osorio

Not as boring and draggy as I feared but when I got to 90% I stopped because by then we already know who did what and why. The Big Question - why was Naomi framed - had already been answered, the romance between her and Burke was going along nicely with no irritating drama and what was left in the last 10% involved Burke being held captive and needing to be rescued. I didn't need to be there for that.

KR's latest doesn't get more than 3 stars from me but mainly because I lasted as long as I did. And this because, unlike her usual behemoths, is only 15 hours long. It lacked the suspense and pull that her earlier series have and I will say that she's lost her touch. Much as I love Romantic Suspense of the kind she's known for - well-crafted plots, no gratuitous sex, takes the "suspense" in Romantic Suspense seriously instead of giving it lip service the way most RS authors do, my feeling about KR now is that she's tired.

I wish, so much, for her to return to her serial killer days, with a hot detective H and capable h. I want another Sacramento or Baltimore, another You Can't Hide type of RS because her San Diego and New Orleans series just isn't doing it for me.

2.5⭐

Anyone could be blackmailed like this? Ngl KR is disappointing me these days she's literally one of my favorite writer so it sucks😔
Why Burke is personally offended with Naomi's crime? They didn't even know each other before that as they're saying...That was quite unprofessional reaction hope there's more to this. Cause the authors characters were never unprofessional in other books even when they're in a relationship ffs.

In previous KR days no one would have confessed in public that they've been infatuated by their client in first chapter😏 miss those logical and professionalism. Also in previous books even tho some characters were connected you could read most of their book as standalone. Now... I think it'll be a little harder.

Lucien is behaving the way I thought Burke would.

Why everyone loves Jimmy? I don't see any reason to. Like he's not a good person and his father and son knows it but still loves him and tolerate a raging bitch like MacKenzie for him*sigh*

Oh wow is Kaleb really his friend? I can't pinpoint him from previous books but it doesn't match how Burke described him at the beginning. And no apologies can mend how he behaved doesn't matter however the situation was and it's pretty clear it runs deeper than that.

Ig Karen rose is in her overly smart fmc phase🙂 they don't need to answer every question to be a bad ass character or every important clue had to be thought by them and you know it kr😮‍💨

Emotions! the emotions are missing in the romance hence no chemistry in her recent books.

We have a fake friend of mmc for a change hmm... Brotherhood trope shouldn't fly everytime. Also not a single person in his friend circle hated Kaleb? No gut feeling and all?

Since I've read "buried too deep" and this one back to back I realized Val is not a good bodyguard. Why she has to butcher her character like this? Also she made Molly and Antoine unreasonable at the end so Naomi could save the day. This is so frustrating. Also I thought we don't talk about trafficking in front of kids😒 or anything in front of civilians? I know they're not cop but still. And I really thought Stanley would be a lethal opponent but he got caught off page? Seriously. I can't help but draw the difference between the author's previous books. It doesn't feel like same writers book and no the genre didn't change. I'm a sucker for a good found family but not when it's cheesy😑 that's it she needs to go back to Sacramento or Cincinnati or Baltimore series and write about some serial killers. The mystery is good I liked it but the everything else the dialouges were so cringy😩 Where's my logical gruesome queen? It's not crime thriller anymore it's too cringy and dramatic. If her earlier work was "crime documentary" these new books are "b grade holiday movies" and I'm mourning the loss. All my favorite writer is disappointing me these days💔

Not quite for me this time around. While I loved that we got Burke's story and happily ever after, the plot execution was bit messy and too convoluted for me. The twists and turns got to be a little too much as the second half wore on and some of the connections made in regard to the mystery and murder elements weren't that well built upon. There were some reaches and some obvious reveals. I guess I expected something a little cleaner and tighter than what I got.

Naomi was an interesting character and I enjoyed her development throughout, though! She was a very kind person and I loved how she found her footing as the story progressed. She had been through so much and still found it in her to open herself up for new friendships and relationships.

Naomi Cranston, a former cop, spent five years in prison for a crime she didn't do. She got out on a technically and works at a florist shop. Life is good... Well, it's ok or was until she is threatened again. But she gets smart and goes to a private investigator, Burke Broussard, also a former cop.
Karen Rose writes some pretty intense stuff. But she softens it at times with a good romance during all the chaos. There was a great cast of characters throughout the story that added some humor and a little drama. I didn't guess the main baddie until just before the reveal so kudos to the author for that.

Burke Broussard was her only hope and his life would never be the same again....
that he hadnt wanted to listen to her in the beginning but with only a few words she had uttered he knew she was innocent of all crimes

and now he was going to try and get her life back.....

ohhh man karen rose has done it again this book has it all ... i was so gripped by this book i didnt want it to end....so many red herrings and twists and turn that you cant see...i thought i knew but i knew nothing...and at the big reveal you are left stunned

Wowzers! What a great book! I love these characters so much. Karen Rose throws us into the deep end of a suspense mystery riddled with murder, sex trafficking, drugs, and is a multi years long (like 6!) operation of coverups and corruption in the NOPD. I was on my toes investigating as any Burkette worth her salt would. Details matter and it’s so true for figuring out what is happening to Burke and his family. This was truly a tale of a knife in the back in many ways and a detailed procedural if you are in the mood for controlled chaos.

Officer Naomi Cranston was falsely convicted of stealing drugs from evidence and didn’t fight it because a dirty cop, John Gaffney, threated her son if she fought for her innocence. She spent five years in prison before being freed on a technicality.

Now Naomi is trying to move on and rebuild her relationship with her son when she’s threatened again by Gaffney. Deliver drugs or he’ll deliver her son to her in pieces. Naomi is done listening to him. Staying quiet didn’t help her, so she hires Burke Broussard, a PI, and his team to protect her son and help prove her innocence.

Burke used to be a police detective until his captain and Gaffney made it impossible to stay clean and continue on in the force. He got out and started his private investigation/protection business.

Taking on Naomi’s case quickly turns dangerous for all involved and Burke and the gang are left scrambling to protect all their loved ones as the bad guys come out in full force against them. It was intense! I loved how they were smart and careful, and kept a step ahead. In all of this they keep at the investigation, trying to figure out why Naomi was targeted in the first place and who all was involved in the frame up. Naomi proves to be an asset with her quick and sharp mind!

Knife in the Back was an action-packed thrill ride! The identity of the dirty cop was from the beginning, but the big mystery was who was the mastermind behind it all? I was surprised when evidence began pointing in a certain direction!

This is book four in the New Orleans series. Each book has its own mystery and romantic couple, but the ongoing story of police corruption in the New Orleans department has been playing out since the first book with the good guys slowly rooting out the bad. In a pinch you could read this as a standalone, but I recommend starting with book one: Quarter to Midnight.

I voluntarily read an advanced readers copy courtesy of the publisher. These are my thoughts and opinions.

Another page-turner from Karen Rose. The characters are so well developed and there are lots of twists and turns as the action unfolds. As usual, she had me hooked from the very first page to the last.

The fourth book in Karen Rose’s New Orleans series and it’s time for Burke’s tale! I love these long romantic thrillers. Some can be read as standalones but all have connections or crossover characters and in this instance, the story brings all the New Orleans people together. It’s a great roundup and probably better if read in order. But I will admit that it’s a lot of people to keep straight and involved a lot of recall (kinda hurt my brain at times).

We begin with former Officer Naomi Cranston in danger from the same evil people who set her up in a drug bust years ago. Of course she ends up at Broussard Investigations for help and of course Burke will be hit by the lightning of attraction that will set off another undeniable romance. It’s a sweet romance that will bloom amid a slew of devils and danger.

It’s the villainy and hunt for justice though that hooked me and kept me invested. The wagons are circled and everyone is on the case. As each new evil and despicable person is uncovered, the atmosphere gains tension and the action explodes. Dramatic and emotional, it’s a heart-wrenching and gripping crime thriller with a steady pace.

I loved this! I am a huge Karen Rose fan, and this book did not disappoint. Naomi was a great strong woman character, and I really liked how selfless she was. Everything she does is to support and protect her son Everett (even if it hurts her). I also enjoyed Burke (especially his support for everyone) but Naomi was definitely the star of the show.

I always like how we get glimpses of characters from previous books, and I really enjoyed seeing all the characters on Burke’s PI team come back again.

The plot of this book was more suspense than romance, and the action was nonstop. I really enjoyed the pacing and felt immediately drawn in.

Thanks NetGalley for the eARC.

I love every book this author has ever written. This book is so intense and I stayed on edge. Naomi has been out of jail after being framed. She’s been threatened and hires Burke to protect her son. He initially thought she was guilty but changes his mind. Loved their chemistry and how close they became. Who framed her? Will her son ever see the truth? He was brainwashed by her ex. Are they looking into just a drug ring or is it more? There’s a shocking betrayal too. I even cried. Loved going through so many emotions and now I want to re read the series. It’s easy to follow even if you haven’t read any of her books before. I loved their happy ever after. I voluntarily read an advanced readers copy and I highly recommend this book. This is now one of my favorite books and worth re reading.

Oh, Karen Rose still has it, folks! The twists and turns. The danger. The red herrings. And among all of it? Family. By choice, as she’s proven is a specialty of hers, and I’m so glad to experience it with this group again.

Naomi has been through it. I mean, seriously. Framed, abandoned, threatened, imprisoned for the crime she didn’t commit, and now it’s all coming back to try to suck her under again. Her son can’t stand being around her. Her ex is a real gem in so many ways. But she’s got Sylvi, who believes in her. Her mother and an unlikely ally by her mom’s side. And Burke, once he decides to listen and not let his knee jerk reaction run the show. Along with him comes the group of family by choice, Eleanor, and a love that can definitely beat all the shadows back.

While this is a tad dark in the crimes committed, it’s also a whirlwind of mystery and finding one answer wrapped up in ten more questions. And it’s also about forgiveness, justice being a reality, and finding your place in the world. And once you have that, nothing can be all bad. Ever.

Thank you for this gifted ARC from Berkley Publishing Group, Karen Rose & NetGalley 💕

This was the first book I’ve read by Karen Rose and certainly not the last. This steamy, romantic thriller had me on the edge of my seat! This was written in 3rd person, with multiple POVs.
I didn’t realize this book was book 4 of a series! Although, it was clear there were content related to the other books, it didn’t take me away from the story. I was able to figure out who was who and the relationship dynamics. It also helped that Karen Rose did an amazing job doing quick and subtle recaps throughout this book.

I loved the “found family” and redemption Naomi found. Her character was patient, resilient, compassionate, and bad a$$ ! Her character arc was perfectly done.

Burke. The epitome of a GREEN FLAG.

*SWOON*

The only con was the insta-love? Lust? Trust? Maybe all three? It’s my least favorite trope. But given that these characters were written to be less trusting of others, it was difficult to understand the their connection to each other.

Overall, I enjoyed this book. It kept me on my toes of who the villain was! I loved we got to read the villains POV- it really had me guessing! Once the final reveal happened, I was SHOCKED!

I need to go back and read all of Karen Rose books now 💕

Naomi Cranston was an officer in NOPD and worked in the evidence section after giving birth to her son. She was convicted of stealing cocaine from the evidence locker and was coerced and served five years. Naomi was released early because the drugs was tested and was drywall. She begins working at a flower shop and her world is upended again. The same one who threatened her before is threatening her again to move their drugs. Her son is threatened again so she goes to a P.I. Burke Broussard who owns Broussard Investigations and hires him to protect her son. Burke was in the military and was a cop but opened his own business. He doesn’t believe Naomi at first until he listens to her whole story. When his employees children are all almost taken, they all move into Burke’s house. Now they must figure out why Naomi was targeted, find out other questions that come up. Will they find the ringleader before anyone else gets hurt?
I absolutely loved this story. Will have you hooked from the very first page. I couldn’t put it down.
A little steamy.
Two former cops.
Secrets.
Forced proximity.
The end shocked me.
Action.

Naomi was framed for stealing cocaine from an evidence locker. She served her time, and now she’s being threatened again. This time she’s not backing down, and she hires a private detective to prove her innocence.

Knife in the Back is the 4th book in the New Orleans series and the 32nd book in the Romantic Suspense series by Karen Rose. While this book is part of a series, it can be read as a standalone novel.

This romantic suspense story is told through multiple points of view, including the villain’s. This makes for an interesting read. With grit and tension, Knife in the Back is a gripping mystery.

I received a digital copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
