4.25 stars! Honestly, this book was such an intriguing ride.
The world-building is fantastic, and I found myself completely immersed in the mysteries surrounding the Therans that are very slowly divulged as the book progresses.
Callie has had a rough 16 years of life. The emotional journey hits hard but thankfully she has good people in her corner (Gramps and Erika) and a dog (Tesla) that really feels like something special. You'll find yourself rooting for her immediately even though you're as confused as she is about who she is and what is going on.
Callie's life becomes intertwined with the new family in town and they are just what she needs in her life. Trystan, Anna, and Colin are characters I look forward to getting to know as the series progresses.
Secrets and lies of omission between friends, family, and the world. What is real and what is fiction? Who can you trust?
Some moments definitely slow down a bit, but they didn't take me out of the story. In fact, it only served to draw me further in.
Overall, it’s a gripping read with lots of twists and secrets, and I found myself thinking about it long after finishing. Definitely a great pick if you're into dark fantasy with a lot of hidden layers.
Personally I think it was good but not great. The storyline is pretty interesting but I feel like the pacing was kind of slow and there wasn’t a lot of action or intrigue to make me feel more invested. And even though it felt kind of slow, there were also parts that were kind of confusing just because there are a lot of characters introduced and a lot of information to remember as the reader.
The romance aspect was for high schoolers so I was fine that it wasn’t “steamy”, but I still wish that the relationships had more emphasis and importance in the story. There is foreshadowing of the “fated mates” but also not a whole lot of relationship build up.
Mostly I felt that the world building was too slow, there was lots of history/powers/characters to learn and try to remember as a reader, and then the ending and “plot twist” felt anticlimactic. I would have liked more action, more romance and more emphasis on the supernatural portions, but that is just my personal opinion.
In general it was a decent story but the chapters didn’t end in cliffhangers and I found that I wasn’t as excited to continue reading as a usually am. The ending did have multiple loose ends that I am curious to know what will happen in the next book though.
Thank you to @happilybookedpr and @novelnook.cyndibrec for giving me the opportunity to ARC read!
The premise and plot was interesting but overall I think execution didn’t land for me. I felt the pacing was off. It was slow in the beginning half then a lot happened very quickly in the second half.
There was a lot of world building and new characters introduced but neither felt very fleshed out. I wish we had more about the Therans, their society, and Callie’s powers in this book. The parts that we did get felt a bit underdeveloped. The characters felt two dimensional, especially the supporting characters like Callie’s friends at school. The romantic relationship didn’t feel like it was built up organically for me.
I also didn’t vibe with the writing style. I generally appreciate more description and this felt dialogue-heavy. It felt like there was a lot of telling rather than showing. The end had a lot of action with a big reveal and I’m curious where the plot will go however I’m not sure if I will continue the series.
Thank you to Cyndi Brec and Happily Booked PR for the ARC!
I won’t lie this book took me a while to chew through and digest.
This is a Ya fantasy debut novel and the beginning of a series I understand why the world building needed to be set up but it felt very heavy to me.
The start of the book seemed to drag a bit long as we,, where we are working out all the things poor Callie our FMC has had to endure and process. Her parents when they passed left her a lot of secrets to unravel and deal with.
She’s a 16 year old girl in the book and while there is romantic elements there isn;T any steam that being said leads to a lot of high school behavior.
The characters are great as well but I sincerely hope in following books that we can trim back on the world building and a,p up more character driven story and flesh them out.
I rate this a solid 3⭐️ no spice just slow burn angst and teen boy troubles
The Therans: Secrets Beneath Scars is a dark fantasy read that has an interesting story. Callie has faced a lot in her life, parents brutally murdered, concealing her powers, but now she has to face something even worse - public school.
This book had a very interesting story line which I thought would keep me hooked throughout my read, but I found the pacing to be quite slow. The world building was detailed with lots of information about the characters and the surroundings, but at times it did feel like an info dump.
Overall, I did enjoy this book but I wouldn’t recommend it to people who prefer to only read fast paced books.
Thank you to happily booked pr for the opportunity to ARC read this book. This review was left honestly and freely.
I really enjoyed the historical idea of the Therans and how it was woven into the story. We continued to unwrap layers to the group as we moved through the book and it kept things really engaging. Callie was the most solid character from the start and it was easy to root for her. I enjoyed her relationship with Gramps, especially as more of their story unfolded. There were moments when Trystan, Anna, and Colin seemed a lot older than the other characters which was a little jarring but it settled into a more consistent high school aged group about a third of the way in.
The pacing of the action scenes made it tough to put down and moments and the ending left me curious about what happens next! Overall a solid debut and great concept with tons of room to go from here. Thanks to HappilyBooked PR and the author for the ARC and the chance to explore this twisty world early!
Callie Tresham is no ordinary teen. Orphaned by her parents' murder when she was a young girl, she is plagued by ominous visions. Once she turns seventeen and meets new student, Trystan Dougrey, events cascade leading to her realization that she is descended from an Atlantean alien civilization--the Therans. The trouble lies in the Theran civil war, which has continued into present day.
Brec immerses the reader in a roller coaster ride of mystery and adventure. From classic teen romance in a rural Ohio community to dodging time-traveling assassins on a millennia-long quest for power, the author delivers reader engagement. Through it all, Callie's visions hold the key. With vivid imagery and a well-developed plot, Brec's work is one I highly recommend.
Theran’s Secrets Beneath Scars was an enjoyable read overall, though it definitely took me some time to fully get into it. The story follows Callie as she tries to understand what she really is, and as she learns, so do we. The world-building is detailed, and there’s a lot to take in, which kept me engaged, though it also meant I couldn’t rush through it.
The pacing is pretty slow, which could be a bit of a challenge for some readers. It wasn’t the kind of book I could just sit down and read in one sitting. Instead, I found myself reading it over a few days to absorb all the information. That being said, the slow build was worth it, and I appreciated how everything came together in the end.
One of my favorite parts of the book was the relationship between Callie and her grandpa. It felt really heartfelt and genuine, adding an emotional depth to the story. The dynamic between them was one of the stronger connections in the book, and I loved seeing how their bond evolved.
The characters as friends were also great, and I liked how the friendships felt real and supportive. Trystan, in particular, was a standout character. His presence in the story brought a lot of warmth, and I enjoyed seeing how his relationship with Callie developed.
The setting, with its high school/university backdrop, was another highlight. It grounded the supernatural elements and made the story feel more relatable. The vivid descriptions really brought the world to life, and I couldn’t help but appreciate the details.
Tesla the dog was another fun addition to the story—her bond with Callie added a nice touch of warmth and loyalty.
There were definitely highs and lows in the book. Some parts kept me on the edge of my seat, while others felt a little drawn out. But by the end, I was invested enough to appreciate the story as a whole.

This book had a very interesting storyline, but it was pretty unevenly paced. The first half of the book had very little world building and explanation into the magic system. Which is because the main character didn’t have that information either, but the discovery and information about who and what she is came in very small bits here and there until literally 50% of the way through the book. The first half of the book was more about her high school life and only some of it had anything to do with the storyline. There was a lot of scenes about her as a high schooler that could’ve been left out and wouldn’t have affected the story at all. I just couldn’t get invested in the story and the main character when all I was reading about was how she acted like a child with her friends and simultaneously kept a bunch of secrets about herself from everyone in her life. Then, at the 50% mark there was so much info dumping all at once it was hard to keep it all straight as the reader. After that, the rest of the book was so fast paced that it felt rushed and anticlimactic. There was not enough info about the antagonist and the end left a lot of loose ends that I’m sure will be addressed in the next book. This one just didn’t keep my attention all that well until I got more than halfway through the book. The storyline is very cool though, I just wish we got more in depth info and at least a few more answers before the end of the book. I felt unsatisfied by the end, and not just the usual “I can’t wait for the next book” feeling.
this book was definitely a change of pace for me - i don’t usually gravitate towards “young adult” books as i’ve found they can be a little too childish, but i found The Therans to be a fantastic blend of dark topics with a younger setting, but it’s definitely very YA. the way that the author wrote about Callie’s loss and her grief felt very tangible and the murder mystery undertones and secretive aspects of this book was really enjoyable to read! the twists and turns this book took were really engaging - there were definitely aspects i didn’t see coming which is a nice change! it took me a moment to really get into this book, but once i did i was well and truly hooked. i also really enjoyed learning about the history of the Therans and the different families, and found it very easy to follow. the world building in this one was very well-thought out. the high school romance aspect was fun to read, especially being a forbidden romance! i loved the more secondary characters (looking at you Gramps!) and the different relationships that we get between the characters, it made them feel more real. i really liked the unique magic system within this book, and loved the tiny moment we got with Ella’s creature - can’t wait to see more!
overall this was a really fun read, and i can’t wait for the next book - huge thanks to Cyndi and the Happily Booked PR team for the chance to review this one!

As someone who usually sticks to contemporary love stories, swoony cowboys, and the occasional brooding duke in a cravat, The Therans: Secrets Beneath the Scars was definitely a step outside my normal reading pasture. But I have to say — I genuinely enjoyed the ride. The story follows Callie, a teenage girl dealing with the weight of tragedy and a whole lot of strange new revelations about who she really is. There’s mystery, a thread of romance, and a slow-building sense of magic that unfolds in the small Ohio college town.
It’s moody in all the right ways, with just enough emotion to keep it grounded.
Yes, the first few chapters take their time (I might’ve muttered “get to the point already” once or twice), and I wanted just a bit more spark in the romance department—but honestly, the strengths outweigh the bumps. Cyndi Brec has a real gift for atmosphere and emotional storytelling. Her characters feel layered and real, especially Callie, who I rooted for more and more as the story progressed. The fantasy elements blend into the emotional arc, which isn’t always easy to pull off. I’d gladly give this novel a 4.5 stars if I could, but since Goodreads only lets me round up or down, it’s a solid 4. And that’s high praise from someone who usually prefers her love stories with spurs or scandalous invitations to country estates. Well done, Brec. I'll be waiting with my spurs on for book 2.
The Therans is an interesting combination of Superman meets Atlantis with a heavy dose of Freemason-ness ala National Treasure. I can't say much more on that point without ruining some of the various reveals of the story but it's definitely a unique blend of concepts. I'm really hoping that book too starts to dig more into the "treasure hunting" aspects (for lack of a better phrase) of the story because it's intriguing to think about where Brec may take her characters.
Brec does a good job of balancing the standard girl-with-tragic-backstory-who-grew-up-too-fast dialogue with the normal slightly vapid teenage girl language. It's hard to do both since the former by itself is unrealistic and the latter would not be consistent with character development. Some of the information was repeated multiple times, which I didn't find necessary most of the time and so made the story slightly longer than I think it had to be. But it did mean that there was a decent amount of world building and consistency; neither of which I will ever complain about.
This is solidly YA but readable as an adult. The MCs that are dating are adorable and super sweet.
Thank you to HappilyBookedPR for this ARC copy to review!
I typically don’t read a lot of fantasy anymore, I rather tend to read non fiction. However I found this book to be the perfect balance of fantasy, and romance, tied into history. With an emotional, devastating start to the book, I instantly found myself empathizing with main character, Callie. With every new character that was introduced as the book went on, I found myself asking new questions about their involvement. There were so many unexpected turns that I had no way of predicting what would happen next. This book is a perfect read for both fantasy buffs, as well as people trying to get into the genre, like myself. I can’t wait for the next parts of the series to come out! I really admired the focus of the story, there was no need for romance to carry the book unlike most fantasy books that made me stop reading that genre years ago. Some books depend on tacky, steamy romance as the backbone to the plot. However Cyndi used history, action, and supernatural twists to carry the book. It was nice to have two characters to watch fall in love during all the excitement of the book but that wasn’t the only focus, which I think really separated her book from other fantasies I’ve read in the past. It was ultimately a thrilling adventure to go on with a cute sprinkle of romance.
Callie isn’t your typical teenage girl, she’s be cursed with premonitions since she was 6. She’s also super strong. Oh and she’s not human either! Callie is part of an ancient race called Therans. Unfortunately for Callie, her family is murdered before her powers can be explained to her. We first meet Callie just as she’s suffering the loss of her Grandmother. As she returns to school she learns of three new faces in town. One of which, Trystan, Callie feels instantly drawn to. We get to go along for the ride as Callie attempts to navigate learning her powers, keeping up with school and knowing who to trust opening up to.
This was such an enjoyable book to read. It holds a nice steady pace throughout its entirety. My only qualm is the dialogue felt a tad too formal at times but other than that it flowed very well. The characters are established well and show growth throughout the story. I look forward to reading the rest of the series.

The premise of this book was very interesting! It was definitely YA fantasy (the FMC was 16 and in high school, though forced to mature very quickly with everything she’s been through) with more of a romance subplot. You can tell Cyndi really took her time rooting the magic system in actual world history which made for a very unique read! It took me until about 25% in to get fully engaged in the story but once it picked up, it kept me invested until the end!
My biggest complaint is that some of the dialogue was just awkward and way too formal for high school kids. It definitely took me out of the story at times.
If you’re a YA fantasy fan, I would absolutely recommend picking this one up and giving it a read!
Thank you to Cyndi for sending me a review copy in exchange for an honest review!
This book was not at all what I was expecting for a YA novel. From secret races, magical abilities and a cast of characters who we don’t know if we can trust, there was a constant stream of questions throughout the tale that had me gripped, until it all tied in perfectly at the end. The FMC Callie, both smart and sassy with her own hidden abilities, meets new to town and MMC Trystan, who dedicates himself to her protection while they uncover the truth behind mysterious murders and a chest full of secrets. Readers will not be bored of action in this story and it will captivate both young adult and adult readers alike with its endless suspense and mystery and the beginnings of an innocent love story. Ending on a cliffhanger there is plenty of room for the story and characters to develop in the next book and I can’t wait to read it.
This was a great YA read! It took me a little bit to get into it but once I did I couldn’t put it down. I highly enjoyed it as it gave me JLA’s Lux Series vibes with a bit of National Treasure thrown in there.
Our main girl Callie has already lost so much in her life and life continues to push her down. But she finally meets some friends and a certain someone that begins to understand her. I really like the dynamic between her and Trystan, as well as the side characters are a lot of fun! OMG her Gramps is absolutely amazing and I just want to give him the biggest of hugs! 😭🥰
A wonderfully gripping story, dealing with grief, angst, secrets and superpowers! Cannot wait to get to book 2! 🫶
Callie, in the midst of life altering events. Losing her family and then losing the person most closest to her. Has to hold onto her secret for it is life or death. A secret race hidden from humans, only few can be trusted with the truth.
This was a great read, in the beginning it had some similarities with a book I read in my teens, which brought a sense of nostalgia back. Set in a small town school setting, The Therans: Secrets beneath Scars, explores elusive race of the Therans and their political viewpoints that start to bleed into mysterious deaths occurring across the country. Who is behind it? and what do they want?
A great read if you a looking for fantasy, angsty teen, friends to lovers plot.
Callies world is turned upsidedown as she learns just how many secrets her parents took to their graves. Between learning of her history, uncovering a secret society of non-humans and boy troubles her journey to self discovery is nothing short of thrilling.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The characters were all very charismatic and loveable, this was such an easy book to read because it was just fun. The world building is drawn out throughout the book so you arent slammed with copius amounts of magical history at the beginning which i really liked. The romance is slow burn but so satisfying. If you are looking for a ya romantasy book that also has some mystery type elements to it look no further!
The narrative explores a comprehensive examination of historical significance, encompassing personal, communal, and broader societal contexts. The presentation addresses fundamental inquiries regarding cultural definition and the intuitive faculties guiding our perceptions. The insights are strategically embedded within the narrative, potentially requiring a second review to see how she wove it in.
It's an outstanding adventure bringing you back, or forward through loss, the grief, heartache, the beauty of being young, and discovering everything you can do & that first kiss. This author knows how to weave suspense. The reader won't be disappointed!
I really enjoyed this book. The history behind the Therans is fascinating and the opening scene is an attention grabber that sucks you into the story.
I like how the author unravels the history of the Therans throughout the book like a mystery being solved with the main characters. It definitely keeps you engrossed in the story.
The book is well written and the main characters are very likeable. Some of the scenes are so good that I couldn't put it down. I also loved Tesla (the dog) who is a great addition to the story.
This book was a ride to say the least. Kelly is a teenage girl living a rough life. She had to endure death, secrets, and self discovery. I was completely into this whole story and I loved learning about the THERANS. I absolutely loved Gramps. He reminded me of my papa. Lots of twists and turns secrets lies treachery, and I could not stop reading. The story was packed with world building ,character building, fantasy. This book had it all. Big thanks to happily booked PR and Author for allowing me to read this amazing YA fantasy.
This story had me intrigued even at the slow pace at the beginning. It is such a gripping and fascinating read with secrets, lots of layers and twists. There is a lot of character growth with Callie the main character who I likeable from the start. She suffers many losses and has to navigate learning who she is, how to use her powers on her own as well as figuring out who she can trust.
This is a well written Dark YA Fatasy with several TW that you may want to check out before reading. I enjoyed this book and would recommend. Look forward to reading the next book in the series.
This is a captivating YA read that blends fantasy, mystery, and a touch of romance. The world-building is rich and immersive, and the characters have so much depth—it’s easy to get attached to them. The plot has plenty of twists, and I loved the way the author handled the mystery element. There's a good balance between action and emotional moments that makes everything feel real. If you're into fantasy with strong characters and a well-thought-out world, this one’s definitely worth checking out!
More grief and loss envelops Callie's world. Slowly the visions are worsening, and she herself is changing. Some answers slowly click together when she finds a trunk in her nana's sewing room, exposing family secrets. what is going on, and who can you trust? what are these new powers? How does this tie into the new friends that just moved to town? The world building for this book is smooth. I was instantly immersed, and wanted to keep reading/ was hard to put down! plus the ending was such a cliffhanger!
Loved the concept for this book but overall it just missed the mark for me. From a really slow start to then an overload of information, the book was unfortunately poorly executed. Frankly I am still a little confused myself on what her "shield" etc look like but I know way too much information on multiple friends who aren't relevant to the plot at all. It felt like there was a lot of wonderful ideas that didn't come together cohesively. Hopefully the next book in the series will be better paced and more thoroughly planned, still excited to read the next instalment!
This was my first YA Fantasy. I wanted to read it before gifting a copy to my 14 yr old granddaughter, who is an avid reader.
The author did a great job drawing me into the story, as she described the scenes; I felt like I walked into the room, or mill or was riding along in the car.
I liked that it wasn't too spicy as I wanted to make sure it was appropriate for my teenage granddaughter.
We both enjoy reading and as she grows older, it's nice being able to connect over books!
This was a fascinating book! I literally finished it within six hours with like two breaks.
I loved the history involved in this book. I especially enjoyed the mystery behind the Therans and how it was slowly revealed by the main characters. The main characters are likable. Callie(cute) and Trystan(protective) have very cute protective relationship. I really enjoyed reading this book!
I read this ARC thanks to the author and HappilyBooked PR. This review is my honest opinion.
