These Severed Secrets

Rate this book
2 beacons down… and 2 beacons to unlock. Magic is coming back in drips and drabs but not everyone welcomes its resurgence.

With the safety of Rivetia far in their minds, Joseph and his team are slowly growing in numbers, now back on the run, Joseph is looking for the book that started all of this – found in the possession of the Hunter’s Guild, Joseph must quell his anxieties and return to the very place he had desperately sought to escape.

Haunted by the ever-present peril of the decay, Joseph finds himself in the Septica region. An island west of Freydale, it marks their next objective: the location of the Nature Key and its beacon.

Joseph observes that in this kingdom, a verdant expanse of vines and trees, the king and Maura share a striking resemblance, causing her to lose any sense of self she once possessed, Maura can somehow understand an ancient language - the language of the forest. With this new knowledge and leverage, Joseph discovers the location of the beacon with little effort: a place called the Heartwood.

There is only one rule in the Heartwood, a rule Joseph can't help but abide by: only those with magic can enter the Heartwood.

Now, Joseph and Alex must navigate the perils that the forest presents. With the reunion of old enemies, a new friend and an unlikely alliance Joseph never thought possible, Joseph is thrown into a thick web of deceit, anger and a plot to reunite the four keys of Kalem, Joseph is faced with the prospect of unlocking an ultimate weapon: a wish, a conduit to fulfil any desire.

With pain and dread at every turn, Joseph must learn to be resilient in the face of danger and to try not to tip the scales of fate – especially when his loved ones' lives are hanging in the balance of survival and destruction.

Aaron Robinson is a British writer of LGBTQ+ fantasy and science fiction, often dealing with issues of identity, loss, and resistance. Aaron's writing features dystopian imagery and time-warping realities with characters that are fighting to live and for the right to be seen as who they are.

His first book, These Fated Secrets, is the first book in the series Keys of Illusions—an epic fantasy experience in a shattered and broken world, where magic has been outlawed, and nearly forgotten. Fifty years after the war that obliterated it, magic begins to stir slowly, but with it will come horror. At the center of it all is Joseph Price, a boy of legacy and erasure, on the run from who he is—asking whether a dying world really deserves to be saved at all.

Aaron writes for readers who yearn to be moved slowly, examining developed, beautiful worlds with queer characters who will not disappear.
