The Nightingale and the Rose

Rate this book
On Her Majesty’s Secret Sapphic Service

Detective Rose Martin has spent years trying to bring down Sterling Montague, a corrupt British billionaire with plans of destroying democracy.

But her pursuit of justice throws her into a shadowy world of spies and assassins—a clandestine organisation called the Circle. Tasked with guarding the monarchy, the Circle operates outside the law, led by a mercurial and dangerous woman known only as the Nightingale.

When Rose realises it is the Nightingale who stalks her through London’s midnight streets, the click of her heels haunting Rose’s dreams, it ignites a passionate obsession neither can deny.

Rose’s investigation pulls her deep into a high-stakes game, where every answer only leads to more questions, where every touch blurs the line between duty and desire. Where trust becomes a powerful weapon and love becomes the ultimate risk.

For fans of Killing Eve and Atomic Blonde and for those who wished James Bond and The Kingsman were sapphic, The Nightingale and the Rose is the perfect read for anyone who loves their women oh-so-deliciously dangerous.

Jolie Dvorak likes to write steamy, angsty romance featuring women who fall hard and love harder. When her first book was released, she revealed that ‘Jolie Dvorak’ was, in fact, the pen name of another sapphic romance author and challenged readers to guess who. This led to some very lovely compliments and quite a few long, funny conversations, but Jolie’s true identity remains a secret. If you think you know, send an email to hello (at) joliedvorak (dot) com with your theories. Gold star if you get it right.

Clever, fun book about a sexy spy group called the Circle who take on the most evil of criminals in an alternate United Kingdom. The whole vibe is sapphic spy thriller via a noir lens. Evelyn Knight, a woman in complete control in and out of bed, leads her extraordinary team to destroy billionaire Sterling Montague who aims to control the world. Her only soft side belongs to the young but determined detective, Rose Martin. Along with writing the book, Jolie Dvorak narrates the story and does a wonderful job at expressing the personalities of the characters.

What I like best about the book is that it doesn’t take itself too seriously. The object is to entertain and the author succeeds in providing us with action, gorgeous crime fighters, and a crazy amount of snark and banter. Evelyn and Rose together are a potent mix of fire, sweetness, and destruction. The secondary characters add good back story and balance. Over all, I had a great time reading the book and look forward to the next one.

The Nightingale and the Rose by Jolie Dvorak, a spy + police novel set in England. If it’s anything by Jolie Dvorak it’s going to be spice laden. What I appreciated most was the plot and its twists. The women-driven story was fast paced, action packed and highly entertaining (I haven’t experienced any slump in the story). It was also kinda funny that the premise mirrored reality in 2025. It made me hope this story manifested its ending in reality as well because the world really needs a break from megalomaniac tech bros.

In general, The Nightingale and the Rose is a very entertaining and pleasurable read. I’m definitely sticking for the rest of the books.

This is a fun, light, slightly quirky, lesbian James Bond delight. There’s tons of twists and turns and an amazing group of women running a secret government agency at the behest of the queen of England. In comes Rose, a police woman with the Met, who falls for the head of the agency. Rose is a little sub and the Nightingale is a caring Dom, with an automatic weapon.

I got a tad distracted in the middle…there were a PILE of fade to black scenes and lots of spy stuff. The scenes that are not fade to black are so much fun. Definitely worth the getting through that middle bit. Jolie Dvorak is VERY smart and a really clever writer.

Good grief! This book was just so..satisfying. The world needs it now, a world where integrity, honesty and honour have been wiped from the dictionary. The documents of rules, where the good guys do the right thing, follow the said rules to the letter, and the bad guys don’t, are rescinded. The playfields are so gloriously level. Did I mention satisfying?

This one had killing Eve vibes and I loved it! Detective Rose and someone known only as “The Nightingale” play cat and mouse with each other across the streets of London!

The Nightingale and Rose paths cross thanks to the hunt of a mutual enemy. I listened to this on audiobook and it was narrated by the writer herself. I loved the nightingale, she was fascinating and had Rose in the palm of her hand!

If sapphic is your genre then definitely listen to this one, it was just pure fun.

I don't know exactly where to begin. I have a lot of problems with this book, which mainly stem from my personal preferences. It's an action-spy-thriller story with a clear "Women to the Power!" trope, which is totally fine. What I dislike is that the protagonists behave abhorrently. This is much more James Bond than any modern author should strive for.

In the spoilers, there are multiple instances of very problematic behaviors and story points:

This is one of those stories that gets better and better as it goes along. I appreciated that the romance played just as large a part as the intrigue.

I also loved the premise and wish it was real.

Author Jolie Dvorak narrated this book herself and unless you’re Julia Whelan or Natalie Naudus, that’s not always a great idea. Well - I can say unequivocally that Dvorak has serious performance chops! She must be or have been an actor or performer of some kind because she did an outstanding job with it. She voiced a number of different characters - female and male - and her take on The Nightingale was hot as hell. She needs to voice ALL of her books!

As previously mentioned, the story builds and builds to an exciting, satisfying conclusion. I’m quite impressed. If you’re interested in listening to very sexy spy stories with badass female characters narrated by a talented English narrator, you’ll want to give this a listen!

Let’s just hop into it!
(forgot I didn’t review or rate this after my read😭)

In part 2 I wish we had more dates instead of the montage of their relationship— even though it was entertaining and movie like. But if we had more romanticism with the passion, the ‘love you’s’ and ‘feeling of love’ would’ve felt more real and warm to me.

BE WARNED: Sterling is giving El*n Mu*k which is hilariously infuriating!

Interesting how Evelyn uses a dom x sub dynamic, not only for the comfort within a relationship, but as a means to place in her tasks for personal success and control within her work. Hell, she be folding me up too but Rose, but be mad and speak your concerns for a least a day when it comes to certain shit.

‘She saw Rose now—truly saw her—not merely a new obsession and a pale shadow of Abigail.’

How crazy, I wish the reciprocal love was felt for me earlier, but the Christmas chapter really showed that. While the lust was hot, it got old quick and this is when I felt the actual depth of their love for one another, and not just an obsession misconstrued as love.

“Fuck Britain. Why not Great Britain? Why shouldn’t we be Great again? I could get hats made!”
See! Elon and Trump love child.

Departing thoughts

- I had fun! Me not knowing much about British politics helped with that. Although, the fact that ‘twitter’ plays such a hand in what happens more than the queen it seems, is comedic.
- The action scenes were vividly written!
- Is Molly thirteen or fourteen?
- Women in power>>>>

Wow, yeah. That really gave me some needed serotonin. The mysterious and enigmatic attitude of the female squad. Yes. Unapologetic attitude, I love.

I couldn’t put this book down and I’m still thinking about it long after I’ve finished reading it. Jolie Dvorak has hit this out of the park. The story is compelling, the characters intriguing and it’s damn hot! This novel is definitely one of the best I’ve read this year. I hope she writes more about these wonderful women!
Do yourself a favour and grab a copy as of 25 November.

I was given an ARC for a fair and honest review.

Evelyn is kind of the worst.

(And if I have to read "tweaked her eyebrow" one more time, I might throw my kindle across the room. Surely the author means "quirked" or even "arched". TWEAKED MAKES NO SENSE.)

If you're looking for a vivid Sapphic spy story, with intrigue & treason, an ice queen assassin, a secret society of strong ass women & serious spice ....then look no further than The Nightingale and The Rose 🌹!.

When Detective Rose Martin moves to London, with a sudden promotion....she fast realises she's being stalked while trying to find info on British billionaire Sterling Montague....

The Nightingale's name brings fear to even those in the underworld.

As Rose delves deeper into finding the truth about Montague she's also determined to find out who this mystery woman is that keeps appearing when she most needs her.
The wit and banter between the two MCs is on form... Don't go thinking Rose is a push over, she's strong, fierce and extremely smart..

The whole atmosphere of this book oozes sexy erotic spy thriller.... All done in 👠.

It took me a while to get into this story but around the 20% mark I was hooked. First, I was a bit worried that it would be mostly smut but I was very surprised about the turn and what started as lust and sexual attraction between Evelyn and Rose slowly turned into a story of getting to really know each other. Dvorak spun a love story I could really believe with a lot of spying, lying, and doing bad things for the right reasons. I enjoyed it a lot and will definitely read the next installment "The Falcon and the Flame"

2.5 stars this started with potential and could have easily balanced the hot sapphic spy action romance but quite fast it lost the plot and became repetitive for almost all of the book till maybe about a few pages before the end when all the action happened which wasn't satisfying at all.I am thoroughly disappointed.

I devoured this book. Like, straight up, two big sittings, (a load of those ‘miniature’ moments where you have 1 minute here, 2 there) kind of devoured. It filled my brain with visions of espionage, conspiracy theories and secret organisations. Pulled into the world of The Nightingale and Rose with a force much akin to a tornado, I was picked up, spun around, completely absorbed and smashed down left heartbroken it was over.

The way in which Jolie Dvorak writes is just so fluid, the imagery so vivid and the characters so completely swoon-worthy that you fail to be anything other than completely carried away. The Nightingale is just, *sigh*, hot damn, and Rose, her kryptonite, is so much more than a simpering wallflower. Intelligent, fierce and strong. I loved the depth of these two characters. They both had so much to give, not only to each other but to you, the reader.

The author notes at the start that the geography of London has been slightly manipulated, along with the accession of the monarchy for the purposes of the story but it’s threaded with so much realism that you fail to notice the difference. (Except to have hoped the monarchy was perhaps this way instead 🫣)

A divert into a world of a wonderfully heady mix of the Killing Eve we all wanted (IYKYK) and the Oceans 8 we all simped after, this is a brilliant tale. Twists at every turns, chin lifts, eyebrow raises, powerful women, finger flicks and spice that, well, spice that is, as usual with Jolie, unparalleled 🌶️🔥

Read this with a warning. You will become a complete vector of a human being, utterly useless to everyone and everything around you whilst your mind and heart are won over by this heady tale.

But in all seriousness, read this. It’s exceptional!

This was a book I didn't know I needed to read. It is funny, intriguing, is a combination of real world places and facts, with some new world building added to it, and some fact stretching regarding the history and current monarchy. London has new areas and sights effortlessly added to what is actually there.
When Rose (a DC) is constantly followed at night by a mystery woman in heels, she becomes embroiled in a mystery and secrets. And also a relationship with the Nightingale.
A sapphic secret service that answers only to the Queen of England - what a delight. A whole array of women take part, some in place in institutions such as the police, others seem only to be employed by 'the Circle'. The Circle is led by the 'Nightingale'. Rose is invited to join the Circle as they battle to take down a social media billionaire. Who just so happens to be Rose's uncle.
It is fun espionage, with the aim of doing what is right for the people - and the Queen.

There is of course an epilogue.
This shows the extent of the reach of the Circle and how it could go forward in the future. And why it was necessary to take down the billionaire.

I can only be hopeful that this will be the starter for a series of Circle adventures for the Nightingale and Rose. It would be a terrible waste of imagination and the creating of a new 'improved' London and history for it just to stop here.

If you love a blend of espionage, intrigue, and slow-burn sapphic romance, The Nightingale and the Rose: On Her Majesty's Sapphic Secret Service by Jolie Dvorak is a wild ride you’ll want to dive into. The story follows Detective Rose Martin, who’s spent years trying to take down Sterling Montague—a corrupt British billionaire with a sinister plan to undermine democracy. But her quest for justice leads her into the shadowy world of the Circle, a secretive organization of spies and assassins that answers only to the Queen and is led by the enigmatic, dangerously alluring Nightingale.

As Rose gets drawn deeper into this covert world, she finds herself being stalked through London’s midnight streets by the Nightingale herself—the click of her heels becoming both a warning and an invitation. Their cat-and-mouse game quickly turns into a passionate obsession, blurring the lines between duty and desire. Every answer Rose uncovers only leads to more questions, and every encounter with the Nightingale challenges her loyalties and her heart.

Powerful women, secrets and spies and a romance simmering with tension. I was hooked all the way. Maybe our sapphic James Bond tweaked that cocky eyebrow a tad too much (and she should look after that dry chuckle ;-), but it was fun and well written. I switched between the book and the audio version (available on Evergreen) narrated by the author herself (and did a bloody good job!).

When love takes flight, the Nightingale sings.

Another stellar, epic odyssey by Dvorak, this page-turner had everything. Ice Queen, age-gape, spice, adventure, espionage, a Queen, women ruling the world and did I mention spice? In true Jolie Dvorak style, we are introduced to two of the strongest characters (thus far) in Jolie’s repertoire and immediately thrown into the midst of the game. The Nightingale stalks her prey, a delicate English rose and if there’s one thing we learn early on, it’s that the Nightingale never misses her target.

This feels like the beginning of a new era for Jolie, the combination of ice queen, espionage and danger interlaced with love feels fresh and beguiling. There are few authors who write with such conviction and strength that you can visualise every scene in every chapter. I’ve never had a clearer picture painted of the Thames, its murky depths and what lies below until now.

The plot is fantastically paced, never drags and very element is crucial for the build-up of the grand finale; one that had me on the edge of my seat. Jolie Dvorak is not just a Goddess amongst us for her style and skill but the way she weaves her quill with such beauty and precision, you cannot help but find yourself enthralled.

Review of the audiobook version: I was exciting to give this book a listen, and when I found out it was narrated by the author I was even more keen. You not only get to hear the story, but you hear it as the author heard it while they wrote it. The inflections, the timing etc. But…can authors do character voices?

Turns out this one can! Her narration was just as good as any of my favourites, and felt completely natural.
The story itself was as good as I had been lead to believe, and the world that has been created is one I’d love to play in a little more - it feels like we’ve just scratched the surface of possibilities as far as stories set in a world like this one.

The Nightingale is a freaking delicious character, and Rose is delightfully strong-willed, which is something I find can at times be lacking when you’ve got such a kickass ice queen MC.

London is just as much a character in this book as well, and is so well described that I could picture where they were/what paths they were taking, even though I’m not a Londoner (although quite familiar with the city).

I laughed way more than I expected to for a book with this premise. The balance of humour/tension/wit/spice/story is on point. 10/10, will absolutely listen again.
Now I’m off to find more by the same author.

"Finesse was in every sinew of her being."

"This was madness. She hadn't even known this woman a few short weeks ago, and now she had narrowed [her] world to the point of her knife. She was the first thing [she] thought of the moment her eyes opened in the morning. She was every dream she had at night."

"Love. [She] wasn't sure when it had happened, but [she] had slipped behind her walls, a vine finding the cracks in her brickwork, budding, sprouting, and bursting into flower around her heart. She couldn't even feel the thorns."

"The L-word hung in the air between them and curled a slow, massively wide smile onto her lips."

"The shift was subtle but beautiful, and it struck [her] in the chest how much she loved this woman, how hard she'd fallen. She was completely and utterly gone for [her] and there was no going back."

I loved that the middle finger was pointed toward El*n M*sk and Tr*mp! Just yes.

However, this didn't really work for me.

One, you can't just jump into dom/sub stuff without having a discussion. I don't care if they "seem into it" or whatever. You don't know what the other person is into or what they don't like. Sure, Rose seemed to like it and didn't say no, but Nightingale didn't know what Rose's limits were. So meh on that.

Two, it was action packed, but somehow I was still a bit bored? I don't know. I couldn't really connect with the two main characters.

Wish I liked it more given all the women and how bad*ss they were (I liked Ace)! But alas.

I almost didn’t read the book because of a negative review I saw portraying the book as having problematic behavior by one of the mc’s.

I did give this book a chance though and damn I’m glad I did! This book was fun, kept me engaged and made me wish to be the main character in my own spy/secret agency story.

The story is greatly written, the plot is well passed and the relationship between the mc’s is 🔥.

If you’re not sure about picking up this book, just give it a go. After reading this one, I’m definitely reading more Jolie Dvorak books!

“But there was the thing—love.
Evelyn wasn’t sure when it had happened but Rose had slipped behind her walls, a vine finding the cracks in her brickwork, budding, sprouting, and bursting into flower around her heart.
She couldn’t even feel the thorns.
So she kissed her again, softly, gently, and held her as she shivered.”

Wow

I absolutely adored the story of The Nightingale and the Rose. The craziness and quirkiness of the story were phenomenal. Between the love story and the mission to take down the villain. Just absolutely brilliant. Will read again. Also going to read more books by this amazing author.
