Some obsessions never die. Some killers don’t need masks.
Cary Kruger thought meeting Sam Dahmer was a dream come true—a charming stranger with a hint of danger, just like the horror movie characters she’s always adored. But when people close to Cary start dying, her life begins to spiral into a nightmare she can’t escape.
Sam has a secret, and Cary soon finds herself caught between two brothers—one who loves her, and one who wants to destroy her. In this deadly game of lies and betrayal, Cary must figure out who’s really behind the mask before she loses everything.
A Horror Lover’s Dream – Twisted, Gory, and Utterly Addictive
I am a horror fan through and through. Give me gore, fear, twisted plots, and a little Ghostface action, and I’m sold. And let me tell you—this book had it all, and my little black heart devoured every word.
I was floored by Alex’s brutality—this man had zero guilt. He didn’t just kill—he enjoyed it. The way he got rid of people? Chilling. I definitely questioned my own sanity at one point because, let’s be real, this guy is a walking red flag—but instead of running, I was out here thinking it was a damn circus.
Shelby did a phenomenal job keeping me on edge. The fear, the suspense, the who-the-hell-is-next tension—it was killing me (in the best way). And the twist with the twins? Genius. Cary had no idea who was who—hell, she didn’t even know he existed—which made everything so much more unhinged.
And the vibe of this book? Peak slasher energy. It took me straight back to Scream, where the whole damn town is spiraling into chaos, nobody knows who to trust, and a group of friends is tangled in a murderous mess. That small-town paranoia, the killer’s mind games, the constant tension—I ate that up.
And the ending?! I did not see that coming. Floored. My jaw? On the floor. And I still have so many questions. The fact that there’s another book? I could not be happier. I’m diving straight into it right now because I need answers.
If you love ghostface and slasher horror, mind games, and tension so thick you can’t breathe, this book is for you. Highly, highly recommend—and now, onto book two!

If you love Scream or, really, any horror movie or serial killers, this is an absolutely must-read. This story is so full of amazing nods to horror and true crime and the story line was fantastic. The author was able to continue throwing you off the trail with twists and turns AND, the spice was sooo good. Also, there is a twin aspect to this story line that will have it running through your mind for days! If you love horror or true crime, you MUST give this one a shot!
I can’t describe how good this book was. I enjoyed it from start to finish, I read it in 2 sittings because I just wanted to find out what happened next! There was a few confusing moments but apart from that I’d 100% recommend it to people who like slasher romances!
If you grew up loving 90s horror flicks then this book is for you ! I’m rating it 4.5 ⭐️ & 🌶️🌶️ spice! I knew this book would stir those girlish fantasies when Sam is literally dressed like Billy Loomis. MMC is Sam - haunted by his last name he struggles between fighting the urges that are buried very deep inside of him while still trying to win the girl. MFC is Cary - torn between the bad boy with the killer smile, and the best friend, Matt, who has always been there for her.

Wow. Just wow. Shelby Macabre absolutely blew me away with Red Herring: Slasher Romance. It’s not just a book, it’s an experience. From the very first chapter, I was pulled into a terrifying yet addictive world of suspense, romance, and secrets, and I could NOT put it down. Every twist, every emotionally charged moment, every spark of chemistry between the characters this book had me hooked.
Cary: A Heroine You’ll Never Forget
Cary is hands-down one of the most captivating heroines I’ve come across in a long time. She’s strong, but not in a cookie-cutter way. She’s flawed and layered, which makes her feel real. She’s not fearless, she’s human. She fights through her fear, her doubts, and her trauma, which makes every decision she makes feel monumental. Cary is the kind of character you root for so hard it hurts. She’s faced with a nightmare, brutal murders happening around her, a killer lurking in the shadows, and people she can’t fully trust but she doesn’t just crumble under the pressure. She’s smart, resourceful, and willing to fight for survival.
What I loved most about her was her vulnerability. You can see the weight of her past affecting her choices, especially when it comes to trusting other people. That hesitation, that fear of letting someone in, adds so much emotional depth to her story. Cary isn’t just trying to survive a killer—she’s trying to survive herself, her past, and the walls she’s built around her heart.
The Love Interest: Danger or Salvation?
Now, let’s talk about the love interest. Holy. Freaking. Hell. I have rarely been so captivated by a character. From the moment they show up, you’re sucked into this intoxicating mix of attraction and suspicion. They exude danger and mystery, just the right balance of charm and darkness that makes you question their motives at every turn. Are they truly trying to help Cary, or are they playing a much darker game? That lingering question keeps you glued to every scene they share.
The chemistry between them and Cary is nothing short of explosive. It’s a slow burn that feels almost unbearable in the best way possible. Their interactions are filled with tension, sometimes charged with longing, other times with doubt or fear. It’s messy, complicated, and absolutely riveting. Every time they get close, you’re holding your breath, wondering if this will be the moment where everything falls apart or comes together.
The mystery in Red Herring is masterfully done. Shelby Macabre leads you down so many different paths, each one darker and more chilling than the last. Just when you think you’ve figured out who the killer is or what their motives might be, another twist throws you off balance. I cannot stress enough how smart this story is. Every detail, every interaction, feels intentional. You’re constantly second-guessing yourself, questioning every character’s words and actions, and that’s what makes the payoff so satisfying.
The slasher element is done to perfection. The murders are chillingly vivid, and the tension builds with every page. There’s this constant sense of dread looming over the story, you know something terrible is coming, but you don’t know when or how. It’s terrifying, but in the best way possible. I felt like I was right there with Cary, holding my breath, waiting for the next shoe to drop.
Macabre’s writing is so vivid and atmospheric. The settings feel like characters in their own right, adding to the eerie, foreboding tone of the book. Whether it’s a dark alleyway, a dimly lit room, or a moment of eerie stillness before chaos erupts, you’re completely immersed. You can practically feel the tension in the air, hear the quiet creak of a floorboard, or sense the killer lurking just out of sight.
What sets Red Herring apart from other slasher stories is its heart. Yes, it’s a terrifying and sexy thriller, but it’s also deeply emotional. At its core, this is a story about trust, learning who to trust, learning to trust yourself, and figuring out if love is worth risking your heart (and maybe your life). Cary’s journey isn’t just about staying alive.... it’s about finding the courage to confront her fears and open herself up to the possibility of something more, even in the middle of chaos.
The romance isn’t just there for the sake of it, it’s integral to the story. It raises the stakes, deepens the tension, and makes the danger feel even more real. The emotional beats hit just as hard as the scares, and that balance is what makes this book so unforgettable.
Without giving too much away, the killer is absolutely chilling. Their presence is felt even when they’re not on the page, and every new revelation about them adds another layer of tension. They’re not just a faceless villain, they’re a force that drives the story forward, forcing Cary and the other characters to confront their own fears and choices.
Shelby Macabre has created something truly special with Red Herring: Slasher Romance. It’s dark, sexy, suspenseful, and full of twists that will leave your jaw on the floor. Cary is a heroine you’ll root for with your whole heart, and the romance will leave you breathless. Add in a killer mystery and some truly terrifying moments, and you’ve got a book that’s impossible to put down.
If you love dark romance, edge-of-your-seat thrillers, and characters who feel raw and real, this is the book for you. Just be prepared to stay up all night reading and maybe keep the lights on while you do.
Seriously, do yourself a favor and pick this up. You won’t regret it!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️- 5 Star Rating Multi Third Person POV (Cary Kruger, Sam & Alex Dahmer) Spice Level: 🌶️🌶️🌶️ Age Rating: 16+
🖤 𝓻𝓮𝓿𝓲𝓮𝔀 🖤 Holy motherload of horror references. This book was created for every fan of 90s horror flicks like Scream because it is PACKED with references. Including the infamous line from Stu Macher, “My mom and dad are going to be so mad at me.” And don’t even get me started that our main MMC literally dressed as Billy Loomis and our killer wears a Ghostface mask. Cary, who is trying just trying to figure out her life, thinks she has met the right man. But when he may be connected to numerous murders in town, she just may have doubts that her new boyfriend is a serial killer.
🖤 𝓹𝓵𝓸𝓽 🖤 This book is fast-paced and full of everything a horror fan would love to read. Even though it’s clear that Cary’s bestie Matt has a thing for her, even when he has his own love interest, you can feel how much they truly care for each other when shit hits the fan. But I disliked how much they targeted Sam who was just trying to be there for his girl.
🖤 𝓬𝓱𝓪𝓻𝓪𝓬𝓽𝓮𝓻𝓼 🖤 Cary is struggling to choose which side to believe. Her closest friends who are trying to watch out for her and her new love who she feels the most chemistry with. Sam and Alex are a pair of unhinged twins, but like in an angel vs devil type of way. Matt is over jealous that someone else has captured her attention and it wasn’t him this time. Overall, these characters, and our background fillers are always fun to read and horrifying to find out what happens next to them.
🖤 𝓬𝓸𝓷𝓬𝓵𝓾𝓼𝓲𝓸𝓷 🖤 If you’re looking for something to satisfy your horror reading slump, this book is the one for you. It’s like another Scream movie, but with a better face reveal and lots of spicy scenes (regretfully not with the right twin). A high recommendation for 90s horror fans and readers looking for a little masked killer running amok.
Well, well, well... what do we have here? A slasher romance that actually understands the assignment! Shelby Macabre serves up a delectable dish of deadly obsession with Red Herring, and darling, it's to die for.
Let's start with those character names, shall we? Cary Kruger and Sam Dahmer – the author's clearly playing a wickedly clever game here, dropping breadcrumbs for horror aficionados that are as subtle as a chainsaw in a library. The meta-awareness of our horror-loving protagonist Cary falling for someone who might just be the embodiment of her cinematic fantasies? Brilliant!
What makes this slice of murderous mayhem particularly juicy is how Macabre subverts the traditional slasher formula. There are plenty of masked men in this book, but there is no need for a mask when the real monster might be hiding behind a charming smile, right? The way she crafts death scenes is particularly... shall we say, intimate – putting us right in the victim's head space (while it's still attached, that is).
The brotherly love triangle adds a deliciously twisted dimension that would make even the most hardened horror fan's heart skip a beat. It's like "It takes two" meets "Scream," but with an extra helping of psychological warfare and family dysfunction.
And that setup for book 2, Slippery Slope? Macabre clearly understands that foreplay is just as important as the main event. She's laying her trap with all the precision of a spider weaving its web, and girl, we're all too happy to get caught in it.
Just remember to mind those trigger warnings – this isn't your grandmother's romance novel (unless your grandmother happens to be Sydney Prescott). Some scenes might leave you sleeping with the lights on, but isn't that half the fun? Overall, I'm impressed that such a new author has me geeking out over her work like a damn fan girl. Very well done!
When I tell you….that this book will grip you by the neck with a hand necklace and hold you there till the end I promise on my dark soul I’m not lying. I loved everything minute of it. It took me about 8 hours to finish this with a break for dinner in between. I had to force myself to put it down so I could cook my children dinner lol. I won’t spoil anything because I want you to read It for the first time like I did. Jump in the deep end the waters fine cause lord let me tell you…I had questions and I needed answers immediately. Perfect combination of smut, thriller, romance, and suspense. When you think you know you definitely do not you couldn’t be more wrong. The ending.. god I didn’t want it to end the cliff hanger was real I had so many questions that I needed to know what happened after that and I couldn’t immediately jump to the next one even if there was another one…hopefully there is ;). I fell in love with Sam…but still my beating heart Alex snatched it right out of my body. This is a prize possession on my shelf that I will cherish…. Now I just need another book…hint hint please give me one 😫. Give it a chance you won’t regret it! I sure didn’t 😍

This book was so nostalgic of my favorite horror franchise Scream, but with some fun twists and turns and way more steam. A few favorite scenes out of context : Theater and tattoo parlor. When you read it, you will know why 😉
Cary is all dressed up for Halloween movies with her best friend Matt, when she runs into a guy dressed up like Billy Loomis. Sparks fly and she is instantly drawn to him. Is it the costume? Is it his mysterious persona? Who knows, but she is definitely intrigued.
Sam notices Cary and they have a "meet cute" with a slightly dangerous edge. Sam wants to pursue Cary, but he wants everything to be perfect. Well too bad for him someone else has other plans...
Alex wants to know who his brother's newest obsession is. Sam should have known Alex would find her sooner or later. They are twins, so let's just say it gets complicated..
When people start to die, Cary's whole life turns upside down. Will she figure out what's going on before it's too late?
“Nobody noticed—too drunk, too wild, too absorbed in their own chaos to see the wolf silently slip into their fold.”
This was the moment when the quintessential 90s-reminiscent party scene took place and all hell broke loose.
When my husband and I decided to read a book together (taking turns reading out loud), I knew this was the one as soon as I saw Shelby Macabre’s description on Instagram. Shelby had me at “90s slasher romance.”
Sure enough, “Red Herring” opened with the classic 90s slasher atmosphere—dark, humorous, and sexy. We knew we were in for some nostalgia.
We read on as Cary’s life went from engaging in witty banter with her friends and hitting slasher marathons to meeting a boy who resembled one of her favourite slasher villains. And then things got messy. Literally.
Twists and turns had us second guessing who the killer really was, steamy scenes had us either fanning ourselves or gasping in shock, and the alternating first person narrative kept us immersed. Looking forward to seeing what happens to Cary in round two…
I was so into this book that my eyes were going blurry, I had to know what the heck was going to happen next. The whole story went along so well but you never knew what was going to happen next, I had to find a "slow" spot to stop like in the coffee shop ( & a Gothic coffee shop, I'm obsessed)
I love Matt so much but dang with his comments and protectiveness. I felt so bad for poor Tessa, she was just all innocent in it.
I need to know so much more about Alex, even though he's is who he is... but I wonder what you'll give in the next book as I think Sam will tell their story more. Sam could have tried harder, but he also was trying to protect everyone and keep it hidden.
I didn't expect her stalker to be ....... at all and was like woah okay
The witty comments had me laughing right from the first few pages and I love that it continued with the teasing throughout the entire book.
The playlist is spot on and I listened on repeat, and have added some new songs to my fav list!
Oh hi Shelby Macabre. How fabulous to meet you and your wonderfully creative mind. Red Herring is my first read by this author and will not be my last. I am all in. This slasher/horror romance is right up my alley and checked all the boxes. From start to finish this is a real page turner. If you are a fan of 80s and 90s horror slasher type movies than this will hit right with you. It is like watching a suspenseful slasher movie in your mind. I love the character development and the evolution of their relationships. Messy, complicated, angsty and passionate they are put through it all. The suspense and mystery are vividly written and kept me engaged. On top of the horror and suspense, the fear of opening up, allowing vulnerability and trust is deeply felt. This is a dark, sexy suspenseful read with a chilling feel of impending danger throughout. Over the top obsession, stalking and mindf❥kery yeah there’s plenty of that too. Really enjoyable read and I look forward to more like ASAP please.
Well well well, now this book got interesting! Didn’t realize this book was going to be in lines of Scream, and I loved it! The book reads easy like flipping the pages and watching a horror movie unfold in the brain. Surprised to see that Cary and Matt weren’t a couple, as I thought they would be after reading After the Storm. Not so sure what to think about Cary tbh, she just can’t seem to make up her mind even tho she has her mind somehow set on Sam, but keeping Matt on that string deep inside her. Matt the ever comedian, I still like his character! Nothing else to say. And Sam? Hmmmm he still has that dark side about him I don’t trust. I’d rather see Cary end up with Matt🤣🤣 Not too much🌶️ the scenes are nicely written, but they are not a major focal point.
Over all enjoyed this book. Well deserved 5/5⭐️ Off to the next book #arc #arcreader #arcreview #bookreview #fyp #book #books #booktok #booklover #instagram #bookgram #shelbymacabre #redherring #slasherbooks @Shelby Macabre - Author 📚

I loved everything in this book the plot twist kept coming and I was like WTF is gonna happen next? I definitely need a second book because I just know this story isn’t over one but. Do I highly recommend it? Yes, yes I do. Perfect Halloween read and it reminded me soo much of scream (IYKYK 👀). Please read trigger warnings since this is a dark slasher romance, your mental health matters most 🫶🏼
I love Slasher movies. My most favorite horror genre, the Scream Franchise being my most favorite. Ever.
So, put some of the elements of Scream and other slasher movies into a book and you have Red Herring. Slasher horror books are amazing and there’s not nearly enough out there on the market.
@shelbymacabrebooks has wrote a Scream loving, dark and scary, slasher horror thats extremely good.
Cary meets Sam who looks like he just stepped out of her favorite horror movie. They form a connection but Cary's friends are doubtful about Sam and his intentions.
People close to Cary start dying and blame points to Sam….but what’s better than one? Two. Sam has a twin….so who is really behind the murders?
I really enjoyed this book and am looking forward to the concluding book in the duet.
Triggers: Death/Murder, Gaslighting, Cheating (kinda), animal death
My thoughts:
This was so much fun!! A great twist on a slasher romance that borrows from Scream but changes it just enough to make it fresh and new!
Cary is a fiesty red head who loves horror movies and runs a local goth themed coffee shop. On Halloween, her and her best friend Matt go to a double screening of “Scream” and “The Craft” (2 amazing movies btw) dressed and Tiffany and Chucky. While waiting to get snacks, Cary runs into a mysterious man named Sam who is dressed like Billy Loomis 🫠. The two have instant chemistry, but when she sees him again the next day at her coffee shop, he is different…
This was so much fun and I really enjoyed my reading experience! I cannot wait to read the next book, Slippery Slope!
If you are a fan of slasher movies and romance, then really think about picking this up!!
Billy Loomis vibes? Check. Twisted mind games? Double check. Obsessive twin brothers with murder on their minds? Oh, hell yes.
Cary Kruger just wanted a horror movie night, but fate (and a guy dressed as Billy Loomis) had other plans. Enter Sam Dahmer—dark, mysterious, and possibly dangerous. But where Sam goes, his twin Alex isn’t far behind, and let’s just say… things get complicated. Bodies drop, secrets unravel, and Cary’s life turns into a full-blown slasher flick—only this time, the final girl might not make it out.
This book is pure chaos in the best way—fast-paced, brutal, and steamy enough to make even Ghostface blush. If you love your romance with a side of what the hell just happened?, Red Herring delivers. Just don’t get too attached… no one is safe.
This is one of my most favorite slashers ever! 😍 If you are a Scream fan, you have to read this book.
This is a gruesome and action packed slasher with a good amount of open door spice as well. 🌶️
The highlight of this book for me was the amount of chaos that was unfolding. I am a sucker for thriller/horror books but I hate when I finish a book and there was only a couple of really dark scenes. This book was pretty dark throughout with minimal fluff so the pace really kept going.
This book was also a pretty short and straight to the point read which I loved.
As always, check the TW’s because there are quite a few.
🔪 Multi POV 🔪 MF 🔪 Masked Men 🔪 Stalker 🔪 Serial Killer
This book was everythiiiiiiiiiiing. A slasher romance that anyone who is a fan of the Scream films *needs* to read. Me and my lil Ghostface tattoo were so happy reading this. I was so invested in this story and all its little references to the classics (including a party that does not end well). The twists and turns kept me guessing the whole way through. Absolutely recommend this book. I absolutely would have acted like Cary when she first meets Sam who is dressed as Billy Loomis 🥵. I have been reading a lot of smut heavy books and this has just the perfect amount without taking away from the plot……that scene in the movie theatre….dear lord!
What a great book!! I was entranced with this book and couldn't put it down. I can't believe how good it was!!
A little bit of horror and serial killer mixed in. Perfection. Twins!!!! I could feel the emotions and fear in every character as they screamed in fear.
The end was a complete definition of Karma's a you know what.
The spice was good and the scenes were grim just like they are supposed to be.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 🌶️🌶️.5/5 I was in absolutely enthralled with this book! I was immediately pulled into the dark, twisted, and spicy tale of Red Herring. The FMC Cary is quickly pulled into a dangerous web of secrets, lies, and danger. Sam has a twisted tale that needs to be told that he refuses to admit. Potentially putting everyone he knows in danger. All while his brother Alex is hiding in the shadows waiting to strike. This eerie and suspenseful read will have you on edge of your seat till the very end!
Red Herring was phenomenal! One of my favorite reads of the year! I'm a ho for horror and scream is my all time favorite horror movie. Naturally I DEVOURED this book. I could not turn the pages fast enough. The classic slasher movie vibes really set the scene and will have you feeling nostalgic. The twists will shock you and have you second guessing who's unaliving the people close to Cary. Is it Sam? Who's completely obsessed with her? Or is it Alex? His equally delicious twin brother. There is danger, lies, secrets and even some spice. Magnificent read!
The cover clearly states this is a slasher romance but I was not prepared for this insane, chaotic daubaucery of pure genius!! Holy crap!
I love dark romance and I’ve read horror/gore romance before but this slasher romance is just 🙌🏻
It was like I was reading the book and there was also the horror movie playing in my head at the same time. The details, the characters, the story… all so believable in true slasher fashion!
I was completely ensnared by Red Herring, gasping, theorizing, and on edge the entire time! I cannot wait to dive into Slippery Slope!
Oh my lanta.. First I will start off by Scream is personally my favorite movie and not just because Stu an Billy are absolutely perfection. This book had some spice which I love but also such a amazing story line and plot. It honestly kept me on the edge of my seat never knowing what was going to happen next or when the truth was going to come out OR what even was the REAL truth!! Good story line/plot, 🌶️🌶️/🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️, awesome story line to go with a classic scary movie, amazing perspective for each character and what they are thinking and going through for each “issue”.
This was a solid start to this slasher series! It had everything I am looking for in a slasher: constant horror movie references, masked sexy men (and killers), all the smut you can dream of, Halloween parties, stupid decisions, and my FAVORITES love, betrayal, and heartbreak.
This was so amazing of a storyline I immediately messaged Shelby to read and review the second one!
The twists in this caught me off guard more than one time!
This book was an absolute masterpiece—truly deserving of a perfect 10/10 rating! I was completely captivated from the very first page. It stands out as the best slasher romance I've ever encountered, featuring intriguing twins who add an unexpected layer of complexity to the story. I couldn't get enough of this book; it had me in a chokehold with its thrilling plot twists and emotional depth. If you're a fan of this genre, you won't want to miss out! So thrilled for book 2
The scream slasher nestalgia at its finnest. Matt the funny loveable one and sam the dark mystery bad boy. She has her hands full. Then comes the murders and the secrets and the suspicions. Makes you flip flop so much on who is what and who is the bad guy. This book for sure brings you back to the scream era. holding my breath , talking to my kindle yea i did it all . 10/10 recommend 5 spice 100 on the sarcastic banter. This is a reread, buy physical to display!!!
This book reminded me of the “Fear Street” and Christopher Pike books I read when I was younger. It had that vibe with more adult themes and spice. It had some confusing parts but over all, the story was solid. I was hoping for a conclusive ending on the relationship status of a certain couple but I’m not saying more to spoil it. If you like 90’s horror movies, or binged those books I mentioned like I did, you’ll probably like this.
Slasher romances will always have a special place in my pitch black heart and this reminded me exactly why 🥹
🔪“She was relentless, a force of nature, and I was powerless to resist.”🔪
When our FMC runs into a mysterious guy dressed as Billy Loomis, she can’t help but be intrigued. It has all the twists and turns of a perfect thriller tied up with a perfect slasher bow!
🔪“Run all you want, doll. Wait until I tear that little heart out. Then, you’ll always be mine.”🔪
And in true horror fashion, it was absolutely insane up to the last second! It felt like it ended just as quickly as it started, with no HEA in sight 😭 and I loved every second 🤭
🔪“It’s not just a mask—it’s a symbol. A promise.”🔪
