When my best friend and I decide to open our dream bakery, Sugar & Spice, I expect endless nights of kneading dough and dusting sugar cookies with holiday magic.

What I don't expect?

My business-savvy bestie reaching out to Asher Mercer—Chicago's most eligible bachelor and the same guy who starred in all my high school daydreams.
He's everything I remember—devastatingly handsome, wickedly charming—with a gaze that makes my knees weak and my pulse race faster than an industrial mixer.

I'm not that quiet girl hiding behind textbooks anymore, but sitting across from him in a high-stakes business meeting, watching him study my proposal like he's savoring the last bite of dessert, has my composure threatening to crack.
Between building our business and perfecting every recipe these last few years, I've convinced myself that love is just another ingredient I don't have time to measure.

But when Asher starts showing up more often with questions about dreams that have nothing to do with profit margins, I feel my carefully constructed walls beginning to crumble like an overbaked cookie.

One kiss beneath the mistletoe at his company's holiday party changes everything.

Now, with success finally within reach, I'm faced with an impossible choice: stick to my tried-and-true recipe for success, or risk it all on a taste of something sweeter.

After all, some of the best desserts require turning up the heat.

- at the beginning everything was evolving too slow, then everything happened too fast; so the pacing was weird, because I got bored out of my mind in the first chapters
- almost no spice, and the existing one was there just for the sake of saying this book is spicy
- I eventually didn't like this couple, especially the absurd drama... I did like that it didn't have a 3rd act break-up and they actually managed to communicate and solve their issues
- I observed at least two editing issues.. ps: you cannot flip your hair over your shoulder if it's in a bun!!

At least it was a freebie.

Compelling, but needs editing.

This story had the potential to be 4 or 5 stars, but the incessant mistakes and inconsistencies made me want to rip my hair out. Asher’s eye color changed from blue to brown. There were also numerous repeated scenes.

One of the most annoying things was how much the author repeated the phrase “pushing 30” when the characters were only 27 🙄🙄🙄.

There’s also the fact that the author clearly does not know what a valedictorian is. (For reference, it means you have the highest total GPA in your graduating class). Ivy is said to be the most studious while Asher and Tessa are the most popular and attend every party. In the beginning of this book though, Asher is the valedictorian. In the preview of the next book, Tessa is the valedictorian.

It’s a shame, because an editor could have easily pointed out and corrected all of these issues. The writing itself was compelling, but the constant mistakes kept ripping me out of the story so I was never able to immerse myself in it.

Really enjoyed this book - it’s kind of a fantasy: shy, awkward girl in high school gets her chance she never thought she had with the hot, outgoing jock. The hot, outgoing jock gets the chance he never took with the intimidatingly intelligent girl who seemed different than everyone else. Both secretly liked each other back then and meet as adults again. Already the premise is excellent just based on that - it’s something that sometimes plays in my own mind and my own past 😂

Overall this was a sweet, light read with some nice spice. They both were really cute in their personalities and I like that Alexis didn’t make him too brash (he has a few cute blushing moments) and made her quietly strong and sassy.

While I liked the story, I did feel myself not really “getting” what the connection was really based on, it could have gone a bit more in depth, but it was enjoyable nonetheless. I liked how they both softened to each other and wanted to take a chance.

Not the most Christmas vibe book but it’s got a bit in there.

I’m very much looking forward to the second book in this duet, it’s set up pretty well in this book and I can’t wait to see the sparks fly on the next couple!

Can recommend for a nice, light-hearted romance with some spice and a dash of Christmas vibes.

4/5 ⭐️

Need a quick pick-me-up in the form of a romance with some holiday feels? Then look no further!

Unwrapped by Alexis Winter is a wonderful opposites attract- second chance of sorts kind of romance. Ivy was the quiet, introverted girl in high school with the bubbly and outgoing best friend and a crush on Asher, the sweet and good looking popular football player. Years later not much has changed- she's still with the same friend, Tessa, and they are on the cusp of opening their own bakery. Oh and that cute football player? Well now he's one of the most successful men in business and offering some advice on their new venture and that crush hasn't budged a bit.

This story is like a warm hug. It's sweet with a hint of spice. The chemistry between these two is perfect and it's adorable to see this generally well spoken man who has all the women falling over him tongue tied over the quiet girl he thought was cute back in high school. Since this story is on the shorter side thing do move at a faster rate- the story is a smidge rushed and it could also have built their relationship a little more but I also just adored how sweet these two were together that it wasn't a huge deal. The friendship between Ivy and Tessa is so fun and I love that their friendship in a way resembled the relationship between Asher and his brother Zane- especially with the little tease that there may be a little something brewing between Zane and Tessa as well!

Unwrapped is a second chance christmas romance story. It features Ivy Calloway and Asher Mercer. They went to school together, where Asher was the popular football player and Ivy was the quiet girl who prefered to spend her time in the library.
They both had a secret crush on each other but were unaware. Years down the line Asher and Ivy meet again after Ivy and her friend Tessa decide to open a bakery. Asher is now a business man so can give advice to them. After their first advice meeting they realise their feelings never went away and a romance begins.

I really enjoyed this sweet Christmas story. The characters were fantastic and impossible not to love. They come from different worlds but all that matters is the love they have for each other. A great second chance christmas read.

cute quick read

You can't really avoid insta love when you're working with under 200 page length stories so I'll give it a pass. Plus this was sort of second chance so it wasn't so warp speed. I like everything I've read of Alexis winter so if you tell me she's got a holiday duet I'm dropping everything and running.

Wow read this book in a couple hours, such a cute feel good story! Perfect for the holiday week! Loved Asher & Ivy’s honesty and vulnerability so so much!! Ivy reminded me of a younger version of myself with her honest insecurities, the way we all feel when letting our hearts open up! 5 stars for me!!!

This book isn’t 2 ⭐️ because something is wrong but rather because it’s blah. I had higher hopes for this book but it fell flat. There is no chemistry or spark between Ivy and Asher. There isn’t really chemistry between anyone. There’s a bit of spark between Zane and Tessa but all in all, this is blah.

Definitely not closed door but the spicy scenes felt like they were trying to compensate for the lack of spark elsewhere. And without chemistry, the spice is just words on the page. No feeling behind it.

This was a skim it book at best. I may try Zane and Tessa’s book but not holding my breath for much. Also, this book is actually 156 pages and not the 184 listed. Remember that when you’re only 35% of the way into the book and wondering what is taking so long.

This little Christmas novel-a is cute but it needed more. It’s a sort of second chance book where the MMC and MFC knew each other when they were in high school. The MFC had a crush of MMC. 10 years later they meet back up. This had the promise of a cute story but it read like an overview of a book. Almost like someone is telling you about a book that they read and from time to time going into detail about a scene or two. I know novel-as are short but I’ve read plenty that are able to pack a punch in a small package. This was not that.

Unwrapped is book one in this feel good, Christmas holiday romance from author Alexis Winter newest duet series Sugar & Spice.
In a Second Chance, Opposites Attract, Festive Romance, we follow the story of Ivy Calloway and Asher Mercer through the telling of their dual perspective.

The story of Ivy and Asher was a cute and sweet holiday romance read that had you in the feels, especially give the perfect combination of romance, humour, entertainment and festive-ness.
From seeing the two reunite many years later, having known each other back in high school.
Ivy; the quiet, smart girl with her nose always in a book, whilst secretly crushing on Asher; the popular jock.
To following the journey that the two found themselves on together, due to Ivy and her business partner/best friend Tessa getting help from now business man Asher.
Resulting in taking them from Friends to Lovers in their very Slow Burn, Festive Romance story.

Unwrapped made for a pleasant read with every page turn making it a somewhat quick and easy read.
Author Alexis came through on delivering a narrative that developed through the showcasing of Ivy and Asher’s relationship of friendship slowly flourishing into much more, given the feelings that they harboured for one another. Making for some great building of chemistry to be shared between the two, eventually turning into some spicy steam. Whilst still giving heartfelt feels within the romance aspect that ultimately led them to lovers.
Simultaneously delivering on the plot aspect that bought forth the story of their individual lives with inclusion of friends and family. As well as including some flashbacks to help fill in the blanks of their history, adding onto to their character development in getting to know them further as individuals as the story progressed forward.

If you love Christmas holiday Romance stories, that are light, sweet, cute and festive with all the feels. Then look no further because Unwrapped by author Alexis Winter ticked those boxes and delivered on being an enjoyable holiday season read.

DNF at 41%

A total DNF is rare for me. Usually I’d just skim the rest of the book which is what I started to do here, but then I realized I just didn’t care how Ivy and Asher got to their HEA. I also no longer care to find out Tessa and Zane’s story.

I didn’t realize going in that this was a short story. I don’t really care for short stories, so I should’ve just given it a pass when I discovered it was less than 200 pages. But I’ve read and enjoyed Alexis Winter books before, so I thought “why not?”. Unfortunately, it was every reason I usually stay away from short stories. There was way too much “telling” instead of “showing”, and, MAN!, was there insta-love. Our couple reconnected and fell madly in love within a couple of weeks. I think we were supposed to consider this a second chance story, but I didn’t see that. Despite having crushes on each other in high school Asher and Ivy barely knew each other back then, so there was really no foundation for their relationship now. I just didn’t buy the two of them harboring crushes on each for 10 years of no contact when they barely even spoke while in school. I also didn’t buy Asher, the most popular guy at school, being so intimidated by the shy, quiet, science nerd that he couldn’t talk to her. What did make sense was that he was too worried about his image to pay much attention to her. Should’ve just stuck with that reasoning.

My major problem was with the editing. There were way too many glaringly obvious mistakes. The scene with Ivy and Tessa deciding what to wear to the party was repeated word for word. Headlines claim Asher is from a small town, but then he says he grew up in Chicago. Just to name a couple. And the repetition just killed me! Most of the what I read was Ivy and Asher telling each other and in internal monologue why they didn’t talk to each other in high school. Just over and over.

Quite honestly, the story felt rushed and slapped together. The lack of attention to detail was disappointing from a veteran author.

This is a lovely, feelgood Christmas story wrapped in gingerbread.
Ivy Calloway and Asher Mercer couldn't be more different, they met at high school where he was the handsome sports star that all the girls wanted to be seen with, she was the quiet, nerdy chemistry student who always had her nose in a book, but even then there was a tentative connection between them.
Years passed and they were to meet again, Ivy had her chemistry degree and she was now ready to follow her dream to open a shop that she will call "Sugar and Spice" selling her delicious cookies. In partnership with Ivy was her best friend Tessa, Tessa was also the total opposite to Ivy, she has a huge personality, was popular with everyone but Tessa and Ivy worked, their friendship was deep.
Asher was now a wealthy, successful businessman, always in the news, Chicago's most eligible bachelor.
Tessa thought that it would be a good idea to ask Mercer for advice on starting their business and that Ivy was the best person to discuss their business plan.
This story follows the blossoming romance of the shy, thoughtful baker and the dashingly handsome man about town.
Could a man like Asher fall for someone like Ivy ? would she just be another in a long line of women ? would she get her heart broken ? Ivy and Asher had hurdles to climb but their HEA is a Christmas joy

This is book one of a 2 book series and can be read as a standalone. This is a cute, quick read with enjoyable characters and a good storyline. This second chance romance is about the shy girl and popular football star finally getting their chance after all of these years. Ivy and Asher had liked each other back in the day, but in typical high school fashion, they did not let each other know how they felt. Now they are all grown up and finally taking their chance.

Ivy and her best friend are finally taking the leap to open their dream bakery, Sugar and Spice. Tessa secretly enlists the help of Asher Mercer, successful businessman, very eligible bachelor and the guy that Ivy never got her chance with.

Asher has been working on building a successful business with his brother and truly has not taken the time for a romantic relationship. A call from an old high school friend brings all the memories and feelings back about a girl he never took a chance with. Now he has his shot.

I loved these two together. Yes, this was a cliche storyline, but I still enjoyed it. Asher and Ivy definitely had a connection. Their personal relationship built quickly, but it was believable. There was romance, sexy time, good characters and a good ending. No cliffhangers, just a slight preview of the next story. ⭐⭐⭐⭐

A Forever that was Always Meant to Be -
Asher and Ivy used to crush on each other in high school, but neither one of them had the confidence to admit it, so when fate brought them together again years later, they started testing the water with flirting and finding reasons to spend time together. Each interaction strengthened their bond and made them finally acknowledge their feelings for each other, but Ivy found herself in an uncomfortable situation on an important occasion, which caused her to flee, as her insecurities heightened her fears.

However, Asher knew he wasn’t prepared to lose Ivy, so he did everything possible to convince her to give them a chance at working together towards a happy future, especially after their parents were really happy they had finally found each other. This feel-good holiday romance is just what I needed to read on Sunday to set me up for the start of the week. The love story is filled with hope, joy, love and the most important thing of all which is a true everlasting friendship. If you are looking for a book that will have you positive emotionally invested, the grab a copy of this book now.

I enjoyed that Asher and Ivy were able to re-connect after so many years apart and that the pull they each felt towards the other back in high school was as strong as ever.

There were two parts in the story that I thought were unnecessarily repetitive, the first being Ivy and Tessa deciding what to wear to Asher’s holiday party and the second Asher asking Ivy if she would attend a different party with him as his girlfriend. I didn’t feel these two things needed to be repeated and it took me out of the story because I was thinking “why are they talking about this again?”.

I also didn’t love that the blurb for the story states that “one kiss beneath the mistletoe at his company’s holiday party changes everything”, because there was no kiss at his holiday party. There was mistletoe and a kiss but it happens later in the story and not at the party. I was waiting with anticipation for the kiss at the party and it never came!

I did receive an ARC of this story so many of these things may change before final release but these did stand out as issues for me while reading.

This was a cute little holiday romance. Ivy and Asher are just perfect for each other. They knew each other in high school. He was the popular jock and she was the smart girl hiding behind a book. Ivy and her best friend, Tessa, are approaching thirty and want to open the bakery they’ve been dreaming about and saving up for. Asher is the CEO of his company and runs it with his big brother Zane. Ivy and Asher reconnect when she talks to him about her business. However, when he sees Ivy again, he remembers everything from high school and how he felt about her. Ivy always had a crush on Asher and those feelings come swarming back. Are they just too different to make this work, or will they risk it all? This was a cute book and I loved the way Alexis wrote their story. Just snuggle up in a blanket and read this holiday romance. I really hope she does Zane and Tessa’s book. These two are going to be fun.

Warm and fuzzy, humorous, second chance for the first time romance
Ms. Winter has done it again! She has delivered on a book with just the right amount of steam, humor and warm fuzzies in a Christmas romance. Former school mates Ivy and Asher rekindle their almost-friendship in high school. Ivy is trying to open a bakery with Tessa her BFF and they need investors. Asher and his brother Zane are wealthy businessmen and are potential investors. Unbeknownst to Ivy and Asher, they each had a high school crush on the other. Ivy was way too shy and Asher was way too popular. Now, as adults they have both mellowed but Ivy is still shy just not as much and Asher is still the popular convivial businessman but is seeing the emptiness of it all. Can they become more than old HS chums or business partners? I am now waiting for the other book in this duet about Zane and Tessa. Cannot wait! I volunteered to review an ARC of this book through Booksprout. It comes highly recommended.

Ivy Calloway and her best friend and partner in crime, Tessa Marlowe live in Chicago. They are opening their dream bakery called Sugar & Spice. Ivy is the baker and Tessa is the business guru. They have been baking out of Ivy’s kitchen for the last seven years. Now, at 28 years old, their dreams seem to be coming true. Asher Mercer went to high school with them and was on the football team. Ivy has always had a crush on him. He is now the CEO of Mercer Enterprises, a business he runs with his brother, Zane.

Tessa suggests that they get business advice from Asher since they are starting the bakery. Asher agrees to a meeting the next day. However, it ends up being the same time that Tessa has to meet with the real estate agent. Ivy is mortified because she is going to have to be the one that meets with Asher.

It was fun watching the interaction between Ivy and Asher and Tessa and Zane.

A perfect feel good Xmas story to curl up with on these cold nights.
A high school crush, the Prom King jock and the quiet scholarly girl whose worlds don't gel and years of missed opportunity.
Ten years on Asher has out grown his high school persona and is now a successful businessman. Ivy has, along side her bestie, decided to turn a long held dream of running their own bakery into a reality.
Asher offers to help Ivy get started and their past starts to catch up with the pair as the Xmas magic takes hold and the business deal becomes so much more.
This is a lovely story of two people who come from different worlds and have wasted so much time, only to find that magic they have both dreamed of. Alexis write love stories that will hold you right up to the last page, Her characters are impossible not to love so grab this and snuggle down for a while and meet Asher and Ivy.

At 30yrs of age, a life long dream emerges with the opening of Sugar & Spice, a bakery, Ivy and her best friend Tessa have long dreamt of.
A secret heartthrob from high school days, Asher, who owns his own company is brought into the picture to consult on the bakery venture.
A reconnect ensues and talk of years gone by brings a sense of warmth.
Reading this book took me back to my high school days. Really quite amazing as it was so long ago but I do remember the times, good and bad.
Alexis Winter gives the reader the introspect and it is so well done. Do teenage crush's last into adulthood?
Christmas stories are full of magic and wonder...That 1st Kiss!!!
The author has thrown in the blending of both of their worlds and how they mesh or don't.
We come to find that love holds a big piece of this puzzle in Unwrapped.
What a wonderful title as it speaks of both main characters.

Unwrapped by Alexis Winter is a sweet and spicy Christmas romance about second chances. It tells the story of Ivy, a bakery owner, and her first crush, Grayson, who comes back into her life after being away for 10 years. Set in a cozy small town, the book combines holiday charm with the emotional journey of two people rediscovering their love.
The characters are likable, and the chemistry between Ivy and Grayson is strong, creating plenty of heartfelt and steamy moments. The festive details, like Ivy’s bakery full of holiday treats, add to the warm atmosphere. It’s perfect for readers who enjoy Christmas stories with a mix of romance and humor.
While the book sticks to familiar romance tropes, it’s still a fun and comforting read, especially for the holiday season. If you’re looking for something light and festive with a bit of heat, Unwrapped is a great choice!

I hate to only rate it a two, it wasn’t awful, but it doesn’t quite deserve a three either, I rounded up in the end. It’s not a bad story and it’s short so things can feel rushed. I almost felt like it was too easy. I liked the characters, but I’ve felt more emotion reading a really good Threads thread. It just fell a little short.

My main issue though, was the book felt like I was reading it on repeat. Not only was there some inconsistency in the timeline/story, there were a couple times where it would almost repeat. Twice Ivy realized she could wear her sexy black dress in almost identical sections. Also there was a lot of “I’m not good enough” on repeat where I almost started to believe she wasn’t good enough.

So even though it felt rushed, at times, it was too long. I think it had good promise, it couldn’t quite get there for me.

Everyone remembers their unrequited high school crush (especially if it was one of the cool kids) and everybody remembers the cool kids. It’s not often you have the chance to reconnect as adults but that’s what Ivy and Asher do. Ivy had grown up and become a confident baker and Asher had become a very successful businessman that Ivy, goes to for advice. Ivy brings Asher back to “real life” and real emotions and Asher realizes that he doesn’t want to be Mr. Superficial anymore. I really liked how real Ivy was - confident in her skills but insecure in other ways. Asher was comfortable with his routine but also feeling that it was pretty empty. A very sweet story with some heat.

Unwrapped is a wonderful second chance love story that comes full circle for Ivy Calloway and Asher Mercer who knew each other in High School but remained unaware both had been harboring secret crushes for each other.
Years later Ivy and best friend Tessa are ready to put their plans of a dream bakery into motion, and seek out Asher who is now a power player in the business world, and the perfect person to turn to for advice. An invite to his company Christmas party will soon lead Ivy and Asher into the passionate romance that always should have been.
Enjoyed the writing, characters and holiday themed storyline in this very engaging read.
