Corbin Shearer (Sugarbear) and his sister Becca (Queen Bee) are visiting their spunky grandmother, Mamaw, in the hospital. The only one missing from the original trio is Isaiah, his oldest brother, Tank. Mamaw was the person who wrapped you in a bone-breaking hug, and her fresh scent stuck in your nose until she let you go. Dove soap is a scent I’ll never forget, it's a clean scent. Their parents believe she doesn't have much longer. Yet, Becca leaves the room, and she asks him if he has anyone special because I’m not going to be here much longer.
“Corbin Shearer, I want you and Becca to go back home and live your life. Hockey has been your world since you were eight years old. It’s time to fill up your heart with butterflies that only a woman who loves you can give. Promise me you’ll get married in my lifetime.” Living in a world without his spunky grandmother makes his eyes well up. With Isaiah, Becca, and me, she was our full-time babysitter while Mom and Dad worked. We spent every day with her after school.
She was the one who took me to hockey practice until I could drive myself. She never complained, and I’ll cherish every car ride I had with her. So many stories and mistakes she made but would never trade.
“Don’t lie to me. Now listen to me. You don’t need someone like you. You need someone opposite you. Like me and your papaw. He was quiet and a hard worker. He gave me my foundation, and I gave him laughter and a little something else.” So they left. He took a plane home and then took his truck toward Bryce and Emmaline’s wedding.
He stopped for a snack and ran into who would be his future wife but had no clue yet, so we’ll let it be our little secret. Now you have to understand Corbin is one of those all-around guys who helps in a pinch, babysits siblings, friends' kids, and the shelter’s animals. Even a woman named Oakley and her sweet dog Dixie when her car breaks down, and Oakley needs to go pee, but she can't take Dixie in. She told him no, she would figure it out, but he insisted. So he does what any good guy would do; he calls Bryce to see if he could bring a plus one.
And then calls one of the wags to see if she brought an extra dress by chance. Well, of course, she did. So away they go. Here’s the thing: Oakley was fleeing the office of an inheritance lawyer who came with strings from a man who never bothered to know her. She goes with him to this elite wedding with his friends who accept her, and guess who Oakley overhears talking, both say lawyer talking to the father, at the same wedding reception that she had been having so much fun at. Oakley flees, grabbing her things from the room along with Corbin’s keys and valet ticket, and heads to the bus station, leaving his keys under the mat.
And heads home. To only be woken by the police who are arresting her. Don! Don! Don! Such a good story. Oakley by far has been one of the most favorite characters that Kristin has written. See how they find themselves linked far beyond the boundary set up.
