3.5 stars ⭐️ Clean Fiction - YA Dystopian

Whew. That ending.

At the beginning, it felt like more than two weeks had passed since the end of the first book, so I struggled a bit with the change of events, but I quickly hit my stride and was very invested to see what would happen!

I think this might the only dystopian series I’ve read where going into the final book, I’m actually concerned to how our main characters and their group will take down the evil government. It was dicey multiple hot minutes throughout this book, I was actually holding my breath at times. There’s not clear leaders for this takedown, it’s more of a group working together with their skills and strengths—and honestly some luck too.

Poor TJ. Man. He can be a little emotional in this book, but honestly? Yeah, that checks out. He’s been through it already. And then the author aded in even more pain. Poor TJ.

I don’t really have too much to say else wise, but I liked how there really wasn’t a romance in this book and the message of griping tightly onto hope, even when everything is going wrong, horrible, or becomes tragic. These characters definitely wrestle with that and feeling like everything good is gone (which was so painful to see), but there is an eventual light at the end.

Word of advice? Don't get attached to any characters. 😅

(Age recommendation: If you’ve read secular dystopian books, this would probably be fine. Personally, TJ is tortured and has the affects from be tortured and nearly killed multiple times which makes me suggest this book for only ages 16+, but it depends on the reader.)

Rough idea of the main content found in this book:
Similar to the first book in this duology, I feel like if this was a movie, it would probably be PG-13 because of the violence and showing injuries, but I never felt like it was over the top of gory or stomach turning (you just feel really horrible for the characters and what they are going through); I would mark this book as the content being semi-detailed (being up to 3-4 sentences in the details) with the torture parts being heavier in descriptions.

In the first book, TJ is tortured with a needle and serum multiple times (it messes with him mentally and physically, plus he has a bit of PTSD that is triggered afterwards) & almost drowns (forced drowning/execution) so there are many mentions of it, the affects on him in this book as well, & him having nightmares of it all; Others are also injured with needles and serums which causes them major pain as a threat to others.

We see our main characters hold others at gunpoint, knifepoint, and bowpoint, and also them being on the receiving end of those; We also see others (good guys and bad guys) be shot with pulse guns and shot with guns (some are killed); Weapons are used and others are majorly injured (shot with guns, pulse guns, & arrows; Including our main characters using them towards others and it being used on them).

TW: Side character deaths (on-page) and death of a sibling, grief.

Lots of characters being beaten nearly to death and would have been killed, Fighting, Being punched/attacked, Punching others, Being choked, Being shot (by pulse guns), Being drugged; Being chased by bad guys, Major Pain, Passing out, Blood/Bleeding, & Injuries (handful of sentences of details each time); Characters also think about killing enemies & do injury some other enemies badly (up to a handful of sentences).

This book is also all about the topic of the government stealing/kidnapping infants over a decade ago and making them to be killing machines/soldiers, we see this on page from run ins with them and it's discussed often; The head of the Draft has created a serum to be able to control new recruits (after kidnapping them) & the characters face a teen who has been injected with it.

Many mentions of torture TJ went through including needles and PTSD from it, possible executions, & his scars; Many mentions of major injuries, pain, blood/bleeding, passing out, & screams from pain; Mentions of deaths, murders (including remembering hearing and seeing murders of parents), & grief; Mentions of kidnappings; Mentions of fires & riots; Mentions of thieves/criminals, stealing, & break-ins; Mentions of hatred; Mentions of lies, lying, & liars; Mentions of vaccinations; A few mentions of wars; A couple mentions of an assassination; A couple mentions of idolizing someone.

Both Reverie & TJ struggle with the idea of receiving forgiveness and giving forgiveness.

No language stronger than an unfinished stupid and idiot; Someone is called a ‘buzzkill’; Sarcasm & Eye rolling; Main characters lie for the sake of keeping secrets and not knowing who to trust.

Like the first book, there's a few of embraces and touches between Rev & TJ, but it felt more like a forgiveness or comforting hug than an embrace with romantic intentions (maybe 70% vs 30%); Rev & TJ wonder about having feelings for the others (but life is a little crazy for them to think or talk about it much); Mentions of implied crushes & blushes; A mention of a man and woman being more than friends.

This was a fantastic sequel to Drafted, and continues with fast paced action as they uncover more secrets of the government draft programme, and try to work out how children are being brainwashed into soldiers.
The multiple POV helps you connect to all the characters journeys and it flows from chapter to chapter with drama and intrigue. I liked how this brought characters together in different ways, and united enemies and allies as they fight for one purpose.
It's an intense journey of survival, enduring trauma and loss, and piecing together clues left behind on how to find a cure.
I really enjoyed the character redemption and twists, and this finale brought everything together nicely.
This is a great dystopian series with strong themes of hope, loyalty, found family and redemption.

okay... I just... 😭😭😭 Undrafted was so good... first off, once I hit the climax, I was locked in. this book was fast-paced and kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time, which I LOVED!!

and... the characters... 😭😭😭 I loved getting to read from TJ, Reverie, and Hunter's perspectives! I got so easily attached to the characters... literally, all of them---AMAZINGGG

what I loved about this book:
⁀➴ the plot twists... the jaw-dropping, making-you-sob plot twists...
⁀➴ the theme of hope weaved throughout the book
⁀➴ the characters... 😭😭😭
⁀➴ the plot in general, it was just so good...

overall, this book is one of my favorites now... the duology together is just so good... I'd 100% recommend it to anyone who's looking for a clean dystopian novel!! VERY well done, Tommie Michele!!!

Thanks Tommie for allowing me to be an ARC reader!

This book was spectacular. I would venture to say it was even better than the first one. Drafted was very action-packed, whereas the sequel, while still having plenty of action, focused a lot more on the characters' emotions. The emotional aspect was so well done—I particularly liked the constant theme of hope, even in such a dark setting. It reminded me of John 1:5, "The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it." At the darkest points, when the characters were most tempted to give up, they still had hope. From the dedication to the beautiful conclusion, this book was bursting with the reminder of glorious hope.

Now to get into the plot. There's a lot going on, but the further you read you realize that what seemed like a random subplot turns out to be a major factor in the reveal at the end (which by the way, is brilliant). I kept track of the subplots and watched closely as they all turned out to serve a purpose. What seemed meaningless at first turned out to be anything but. To do that is incredible writing.

Then there's the characters. Rev and TJ's relationship was done perfectly, and I loved the addition of Hunter's POV. Some of the characters who I didn't care about as much in Drafted grew so much in UND that it's too hard to pick a favorite. Even Adrian rose greatly in my estimation, something I didn't think possible.

After Drafted, I was left wondering about Alec and Max and hoping they'd get some more screen time in the sequel. That wish was most certainly fulfilled, and I enjoyed reading through their interactions and getting to know them more.

I read most of the second half of UND in one sitting, and raced to finish because I had to know what happened. I won't give anything away, but the twists are unbelievable. Some of them I suspected, but others completely threw me for a loop.

And then there's TJ. His character is beautifully done, from his naivete in his first appearance in Drafted, to the bond he develops with Rev despite, or perhaps because of, all they've been through, to his determination to be strong for Riya even when he feels like he's broken. Even through all that, TJ still remains who he is. "...after everything I've been through, I'm not broken."

I received an Advanced Reader Copy of this book.

Tommie Michelle does it again! Somehow she took the vibes of Divergent and meshed them with the stakes and action of the Mission Impossible franchise and still made it fun and MADE my jaw drop multiple times in the last one hundred pages.

This has the action that YA readers crave, while still having the comforting story line of good triumphing over evil.

You don’t want to miss this one.

A superhero story about hope surviving the darkness that will grip you till the end.

I flew through this book. Some parts had their slow/drawn out moments, but there was always something keeping me from putting the book down—either a character secret to reveal or an intriguing plot thread to learn more about. TJ had a HUGE part in this story, and I can understand why because of what happened in book 2. The author held back no punches, and I loved that. Too many times Christians write action stories that don’t show the darkness (so to better highlight the light later) The author did a spectacular job keeping me engaged with every action sequence, showing the dark side of humanity (without glorifying it) and bringing home some deep themes that hit me hard.

The only reason I’m giving it a 4 and not a 5 is because personally I felt some of the plot/secrets were a bit contrived at times. Some characters fell flat while others characters SHINED. I felt one character wasn’t given enough page time and their setups from book 1 weren’t payed off well in this book. But another character (one of my favs now) got plenty of page time and his plot line with Adrian and Reiko was really great. Honestly, it’s one big reason I kept turning the pages.

In summery, this book is definitely worth the read if you like gritty action, themes of hope and forgiveness, a strong cast of characters, and a fun superhero plot that keeps you guessing. Great job, Tommie! Thank you for allowing me to be an ARC for this, it really was a good story and I pray others will be touched by its message.

I absolutely loved this book! It was everything I could hope for in the sequel to Drafted. From the satisfying character arcs to the action-filled plot, I could hardly put this book down.

What I loved most about Undrafted was that every single scene was so exciting that I couldn’t help but finish the chapter… and then the next one… and then the one after that. I usually have a bad habit of looking ahead when I get bored with a book, but I didn’t get the chance to do that with Undrafted. I was on the edge of my seat the whole time! Definitely the series to read if you want something to binge.

In addition to the wonderful pacing, the characters were fleshed out really well and each had unique but relatable aspects of their personality that made them really fun to read about. There were three POVs, and I loved every single one of them. And while Rev was still my favorite, TJ’s character shined in this book and I really enjoyed watching his arc unfold.

Lastly, I so appreciated the message of fighting for hope in a world so full of darkness. As enjoyable of a read this was, it truly completed the purpose of storytelling by incorporating such impactful themes throughout. As a Christian, it’s always so encouraging to find God-honoring books that are well-written and discuss difficult topics in an engaging way.

I am so thankful to have received this as an ARC and I strongly encourage anybody who wants a clean, action-filled story to read this series!

The book was absolutely phenomenal!! I picked it up and was reading it in any free time I had! I loved the continued character development from Drafted, the first book in this duology. Michele masterfully helped the preexisting characters grow and the news ones come to life. Along the way, she left easter eggs throughout this book in a way that made the last chapters come together beautifully, and left me with baited breath until I reached the end. I loved seeing the themes of family and forgiveness and the rawness of human experience and emotion in the midst of really trying times. Michele is excellent at her craft; I'm excited to see what she pulls out of her sleeve next!

What a sequel! I enjoyed Drafted, but I did not expect to be so completely wrecked by Undrafted. Like all the best books, this one broke my heart and put it back together again. The powerful themes, the characters, who were all SO perfectly human . . . Just wow.

Hard not to give spoilers, lol, but I will say this: You are not prepared. 😅 The plot twists will wreck you. The ending will heal you.

Tommie Michele has earned an auto-buy reader here. I am so grateful to have read this duology, and I can't wait for what comes next from this author!

"Undrafted" is a sequel that DID NOT disappoint. Every time I thought I knew what would happen next, a plot twist was revealed that left me in shock. (In the best way possible.) A beautifully written, action-packed story of secrets, healing, and a race for a mysterious cure.

I highly, HIGHLY recommend the "Drafted" duology. It was an honor to ARC-read.

This book. This. Book. 😭😭😭 I loved the first one, but this one just brought everything together so beautifully. The strong themes of hope and forgiveness really shine through in almost every situation.
It was amazing to be able to follow Rev and TJ to the end of their story. *Distant crying* I still can’t believe it’s done. 😭 So good.

Ever read a book that is 100% for the vibes?
This was the book.
Although by the half way mark I STRUGGLED to finish it.
I felt like it was a patchwork of other books. With the shell of an original story.
Comparisons:

TJ is like Simon Lewis from Mortal Instruments oh and he has our favorite High Lords purple eyes.

Holland, the main villain, is similar to Valentine Morgenstern with her obsession with experimentation on children creating a race of slightly psycho killers. (Complete with explanation on her own children)

Hunter has almost verbatim the same back story as Nova Artino and in the second book is like Chaol Westfall in Tower Of Dawn complaining about all he can’t do.

Savi and Kaz are very much the “happy best friend” trope

Alec is almost exactly like Hodge Starkweather and Baghra with the “I used to work for the bad guy but then I fell out of favor so now I provide moral support and nothing else”

Daniel is a combination of Premier Davidson from Red Queen and President Alma Coin from Hunger Games. With a dash of Ace Anarchy

Rev was the most original character but in the end she still came off as Michael from Lost and Elsa from Once Upon a Time.

Did I mention the Simulation Serum from Divergent makes an appearance?
Oh, and TJ is the cure—Maze Runner reference.

The amount of “everyone is related” in this book could rival Lost and Once Upon A Time. Everyone has a sibling or is related to someone in some way. Not to mention the Valentine’s daughter/son second act reveal.

The evil siblings trope is used a little too much with not one, not two but THREE different siblings being evil in different ways.
You’ve got the Maven Calore (Raiya), the Taryn Duarte (Eliza), and the Nathaniel Gray (Leah) for the evil siblings trope.
Despite there being three sets of evil siblings every single one of them isn’t actually evil. Leah is trying to protect Hunter, Eliza was brainwashed, and Raiya is being mind controlled. I really do wish one of the siblings was actually evil. The plot would be greatly improved.

That being said, I did enjoy the book, the characters were fun but not exactly original.
The first half was very slow and then the second half really picks up.
I LOVED first book but for some reason the second book fell flat for me.

(Wow, didn’t mean to make it that long)

Tommie Michele has done it again! Gripping her audience with nail-biting action and unexpected plot twists, her sequel does not disappoint. Undrafted simultaneously reunites readers with their favorite characters from Drafted while introducing us to new worlds and endearing characters. Rarely do I believe sequels can outshine their pilot counterparts; however, in the case of Undrafted, I am happy to report that Tommie Michele has exceeded my expectations. Love, loyalty, bravery, sacrifice, and heartfelt emotions line the pages of Undrafted, inviting this sequel to join its place in the hearts of dystopian genre-lovers for ages to come.

It's not every day you find an action-packed dystopian book filled with so much hope. Undrafted is the wonderful follow-up to Tommie Michelle's book, Drafted. If you've ever watched the TV show Arrow, but prefer clean fiction, this is the book for you. Undrafted picks up right where Drafted left off, and is even more exciting. I will warn you, if you cry easily, this book WILL make you cry a few times. (No spoilers though, lol). I loved reading this book!
