I don't know WHY it took me so long to finally write up my review on this beautifully written book!
Song Magick tells the story of the young bard Telyn Songmaker. It was Telyn's destiny to become the court musician.... until an incident at court ultimately ends up with Telyn's hand on the murder weapon.
We begin the story with Telyn alone in the woods, attacked by bounty hunters. The first half of the book is building a relationship with Telyn's rescuer - the dreamy Westwarden, Mithrais. (Whom I may have developed a slight crush on...)
Along the way Telyn learns more about her magical gifts and must choose whether to use them for those who are pressuring her, or to keep her powers under-wraps.
If you're not really a "fantasy reader," don't let that deter you from this great book. I'm not the type who really gravitates towards fantasy novels because I find that they're usually written as though the reader already knows the world in which the story takes place or else overly detailed causing me to lose interest. What I love about Song Magic is that I was able to jump right in and get to know the characters, and therefor get to know the world in which they lived, through the characters.
I hope the author finishes writing the sequel soon because I can't wait to read about what happens next in Telyn's world.
This is the kind of book that makes you antisocial because when you enter the incredible world the author has created, you are drawn in, entangled,lost... and you feel like you are there with the characters on the adventure with them. The writing flows beatifully and the world E.M Hamill has created is clever, detailed and unique. There's enough reviews here to explain the premise of the story, but I was just blown away by the genius of the author because the relationship between flora and fauna, the protagonist and the trees, is just so clever and intriguing. I also loved the refreshingly mature romance that develops with the MC's. There's no girl hates boy then falls for boy. No misunderstandings. They are honest from the start how they feel from each other, and it develops slowly but beautifully. The whole story is epic, and needs more attention! I will be reading the next book in the series straight away so I can stay in the world!
This book was written by a friend of mine that I've known since around 1998 or so. We were both writing fan fiction back then, and I always thought she was an amazing storyteller. I thoroughly enjoyed the novel when I read it last year before it was actually going to be published. Congrats, Elisabeth.
Song Magick is the story of a bard, Telyn, and Mithrais, the Westwarden, a soldier of the Wood. Telyn has been exiled from the King's Court and is traveling to distant lands when she's set upon and attacked by an assassin. Mithrais comes to her aid and discovers a wondrous fact - she is his soulmate, the other half to his heart.
Telyn has a rare gift. One that Mithrais, a wood born who can speak to the trees, cannot comprehend. Telyn has been called to the trees, to perform a dangerous and crucial task, one she might not survive.
Song Magick was very well written. The language, the flow of the story was satisfying. There was a fair bit of danger involved in Telyn's task and the author did a lovely job keeping the reader wondering how it was all going to turn out.
That said, it felt much longer than its 304 stated pages. In fact, it almost felt like two separate books. The first half of the book dealt with the danger to Telyn from the assassins sent after her. That part was thrilling, relatively fast paced, and fraught with danger and risk.
The second half of the book dealt with Telyn's quest to help the tree-folk. This half made for a wonderful story, but there were bits and pieces included that were never resolved. Political intrigue was hinted, but never fully realized. Letters were received, hinted at, and then nearly forgotten.
Still, though, this was an enjoyable read. It's not a quick read, but it is enjoyable. The ending is satisfying and hints at future books. Overall, the author did a very good job at explaining magic and Telyn's powers drew me in. Recommended for a long, lazy weekend read.

One of my favorite fantasy authors is Mercedes Lackey and one of my favorite worlds is Lackey's Valdemar. So I can think of little higher praise than to favorably compare Elisabeth Hamill's world-creation skills to that of Mercedes Lackey.
It is so vitally important in fantasy fiction to have a world that is internally consistent. If the world is not well-formed, then it matters not if the characters are well written, whether the plot is intricate and well developed, or whether the dialogue snaps; there will be such dissonance due to the world being off-kilter. In Song Magick, Hamill's has developed such a strong sense of place that the rest of her ample writing skills are on wonderful display.
It is difficult to write within the fantasy genre and write a complete new and original story. I recognized many bits from other fantasy authors, but they were incorporated so well into the story that they seemed fresh and original. I really enjoyed the chemistry between Telyn and Mithrais, which was presented as passionate without being tawdry. Aside from references to sexual assault which might be troublesome for some readers, I would be comfortable revocommending the book to anyone over 16 who enjoys fantasy.
I was especially pleased with the fact that, while this book could certainly continue on into being part of a series -- and I certainly would enjoy reading more -- it has a definite beginning, middle, AND end; NO CLIFFHANGER! I definitely look forward to more by this author. Can't wait to see what's next for Telyn and Mithrais.
I received this book via a Goodreads giveaway, and I finished it just before we went off-grid up at Voyageurs National Park, so now that vacation is over, I am finally able to get my review in!
While I was intimidated at first by the long list of characters at the beginning of the book, I plunged right in and only ended up needing to refer back to that list once. A good sign that the characters are well-developed and well-introduced. The writing style was a bit formal for my tastes but I think it is appropriate for the genre and the general atmosphere of the story. There were some great plot twists. I think this book is a good find and would recommend it!
Song Magick is an interesting tale of a bard, Telyn, who has been banished from the Kings Court and sets out traveling on her own. Unfortunately, trouble follows her from the Court. She narrowly escapes and attack by an assassin, in fact, probably wouldn’t have if not for the Westwarden’s, Mithrais, help. Telyn and Mithrais discover they are life-mates. They also discover Telyn has a unique gift which she is called upon to use for the greater good, and despite the danger, she unselfishly takes the risk.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It is full of color and music and magic and beauty. Although not usually a genre that I follow, I read it on the recommendation of a friend, and it's been quite a while since I enjoyed a book as much as this one. I would have given it five stars, but there remained some loose ends that I understand, from communications with the author, that the editor had her remove to shorten the book. At least the sequel is half-written with these deletions in play. I look forward to more from this new author.
Song Magick is an incredible story, full of obstacles, magic, and led by a strong heroine named Telyn. This story has incredible imagery and a wonderful flow to it that leaves the reader wanting more. It’s the perfect read for any fantasy fanatic who also likes a bit of romance on the side.
I love this story and I’m looking forward to reading another book by this author. A truly fantastic display of writing.
This book is magic! I found this book a delight to read -- part romance, part fantasy, fully enjoyable! Ms. Hamill writes a strong heroine with true intellect. When Telyn is set upon by assassins she must find a safe haven. She meets handsome warden, Mithrais who would give his life to keep her safe. Add to that a gift of music that goes far beyond what Telyn could imagine. Is she strong enough to explore that gift without destroying herself? I couldn't put it down, what an adventure!!
Delightful YA fantasy novel. Strong female protagonist who is not a simpering idiot, nor a Mary Jane. Great for young ages, even as young as say 5th or 6th grade, but completely enjoyable as an adult fantasy reader.
A wondrous fantasy filled with great genuine characters, a strong heroine, nature, music, magic, sentient beings, court intrigues, and a bit of romance. I can't wait to read the second novel!
I have to say, I was totally enchanted by this story. The author has crafted a truly fascinating world, and woven a moving tale featuring some amazing characters. The world building is done so well, it was very easy to picture everything as I read and I found myself drawn in immediately. The writing was flawless and descriptive, capturing my attention and keeping it the whole way through. Lovers of fantasy books will find that the author has created a unique story that keeps the fantasy genre fresh and exciting.
The words that come immediately to mind when I think of Telyn are strength, grace, beauty and loyalty-she is a unique and awe-inspiring young lady who possesses courage and determination to do the right thing. Mithrais is a strong protector who actually can feel deeply and is extremely loyal to the Tauron, as well as a great leader. And all of the secondary characters we encounter in this journey are wonderfully written, full of richness and life...and all of them contribute to the story.
You will find plenty of action, a bit of drama, and some sweet young romance that will tug at your heart. Even though the book is just around 300 pages, it felt like I was reading something bigger as the story is very full and well rounded-in a GOOD way.
If you love fantasy, you are definitely going to want to read Song Magick ASAP. I loved this story, would be thrilled to read more about this world, and give it a fantastic 5 stars!
Telyn’s gift of song and music has an affect that was not precedent. She could control action and emotions of those that are within the sound of her voice. With this said and done in the vicinity of the king’s court she becomes and exile in the land and in danger in other was from others. Fate intervenes and sends a protector, Mithrais. The two find that keeping her alive was a common goal but there was another that was deeper than a goal and stronger than a bond. Magic has been brought back to the world via the talents of Telyn. Along with the good, evil finds its way back also. This first book of the series was a magic fantasy historical young adult journey that brings about a gift to evoke powerful emotions and long lasting actions.
The world created here was vivid and drawing. I could feel myself being immersed in each new scenery. I was thrilled with this fantasy fast pace adventure. Telyn was a girl with unique abilities and with a very important task. You could feel the steps she made to get to where she was going. Danger lay en route to her destination and death could await her there. I found myself wrapped in the turning of each new page to get more details to further entwine myself.
I have me a ya author to keep on my radar and look for more good things from.
I haven’t read anything like Song Magick before, it was a nice change.
The thing that stood out most for me was the beautiful writing. Hamill has a unique way with words that capture the beauty of fantasy and bring it to life; this was especially vital to her wonderful world building. I truly enjoyed the medieval-style realm where the story takes place.
The characters were well developed, Telyn is strong-willed and Mithrais is swoon worthy. I loved the chemistry between them. Even the secondary characters seemed fully realized and gave reason to either love or hate them.
This story has plenty of action, drama, and romance. I’d love to see more of these characters and more from this author.
I was in the mood for a fun fantasy, and this fit the bill. I really liked how the music was used for the magic in this. It felt a bit longer than it was (probably could have tightened up the middle more), but it suited my mood for fun, slightly romantic fantasy. I'll be curious to see where the next one takes it.
I won this book from Storyteller Alley, and I'm so glad I did. It's a wonderful story full of music, magic, wonderful characters, not all human, in a fascinating setting. I hope there's a sequel someday.
Song Magick is a tale about a world on the brink of reviving old magic through a brave heroine. As the title suggests, everything in the world building and characters either involves a bit of magik or music--even the names roll of the tongue like melodies. I liked the spin of using music to create magic and to open doorways. The best part of this novel, aside from the world building, was the cast of characters. When the pace of the novel slowed at times, the characters kept me plugging along to the end. I would class this is a moderately clean teen read and definitely for an older YA audience.
SPOILERS: for parents that want to know--there's a description of an attempted rape scene and references to infidelity and free love.
