Specialist Jack Russo is a lonely, soldier serving in Iraq. He doesn't have a regular outlet for his sexual frustrations until a roadside bomb injures the driver of his gun truck and Private First Class Shawn Farrelly arrives on base. Russo and the young soldier are dispatched to a rescue mission that turns into an ambush. Alone and cut off from the rest of their unit in a hostile neighbourhood, the soldiers take refuge in an old woman's shed. The men fear they can't make it out of their situation alive and choose to go out with smiles on their faces. They take advantage of the momentary privacy to fulfill their animal desires and leave labels behind.
Robert Cummings lives in Pennsylvania with his partner and their black lab mix dog. Robert is an Iraqi freedom veteran with a seventeen-year law enforcement career. He enjoys the outdoors, family, and travel.
This book had such potential. It was amazingly good, it had me hooked. Loved everything about it. And then Pfc. Shawn Farrelly had to go and say “Paint my insides white, studly!”
That was all it took to almost send this book out the window. It was so wrong.
The build up to that moment was so erotic, the sexual tension between them was strong, there was no question about what was going to happen while hiding in the shed.
I still can't wrap my head around how an author can ruin a perfectly good book like this.
Let’s go back to what I liked.
The characters, well Jack mostly, strong, insightful, caring...he had everything going for him. The questions he was asking were the right ones, he was feeling lonely and wondering if it all was worth it.
Insert Adam, who right up to the last moment kept saying he was straight. Adam, my dear, you are not straight.
The UST was palpable, the innuendos were well placed. But the dialogue threw me out of the story completely.
And unfortunately it got worse.
A few months back, Jack had an encounter with another soldier, in one of the camp’s bathrooms. It was just a quick thing, but as he tells the story he mentions that he’d never crossed paths with the man again.
Guess who comes to their rescue? Yes, the same guy. As soon as they see each other Jack doesn’t waste any time, offering to meet up that night.
What is totally OOC is that Pfc. Farrelly, who up to a few moments before the rescue was not only 'straight' but a virgin, ends up involved in a gang bang that same night with the Captain and Jack in the bathroom where the two first met.
What was disconcerting was that Jack’s story telling was building up to something more profound. Was going in the direction of finding someone, being with someone in a deeper way. To then go and sort it all out with a quick shag? It didn’t seem like the same book, or the same characters..
I guess if the book had been presented as erotica I would have applauded the author, but the feeling I got as a reader was that up to that point Jack was looking for a partner, and that was totally missing after the sex.
Still, I can’t say I didn’t like it, because I did. And I will probably read more from the author, but with more caution next time.
written for http://mmgoodbookreviews.wordpress.com/ Jack Russo being a gay man in the military; especially a war zone during don’t ask don’t tell had a tough time. He had to resort to staying secret and only satisfying his needs himself. I really loved this story. Though I will say I don’t agree with the categories. I didn’t see much BDSM at all and the MMM that’s was pretty much pushing the envelope also. But I found it a fabulous contemporary MM story. I loved how well depicted Jack’s character was and also Shawn. I loved how this story unfolded by Jacks memories of the past and compared to his present. I found it overall beautiful and extremely hot and sexy. Recommendation: If you like stories of men that have to stay hidden, soldiers, and really hot sex though most is fantasy this is for you. I highly recommend it if you’re looking for a fast read on a hot summer day.
I think I would have liked this more if it were a longer story. I didn't have enough time to really care about the characters. And Shawn tossing off weird signals they saying "I'm not gay!" Then being a pretty active participant. And the MMM wasn't necessary if you ask me.
This storyline was empty of filings and simply boring. The point in this short novella was a short description of Jacks life as a soldier in Iraq, and his sex outlets with different guys. Boring...
