Ooof. So, so awful. I tried Phillips's Serendipity first and wasn't a fan. Gave this one a shot and so sorry I did.
1. The writing for the kids? No. I've been a precocious child. That dialogue? Bad.
2. A shy publicist? Working for "the top sports management agency" in the country? Do we not understand what being a publicist means? No.
3. Riley kept describing Sophie as classy, but unless the definition of classy is "uncomfortable with flirting and doesn't swear", I didn't see it. Not that there's anything wrong with not swearing or being classy, but the two are not equivalent.
4. I did laugh when I found the mentions of her older sister's child. As one reviewer mentions, the child is a boy then becomes a girl at the end of the book.
The characters were worse than poorly drawn; they were inconsistent. I should have quit the book, but I kept going, not because I thought it'd get better but because I had nothing else new on my Kindle. I think this author is NMS.
Sebastian’s sisters are a hoot. Those ladies cracked me up. And I loved how Riley took everything in stride. Well almost everything, his real dad he had a hard time with. Sophie is very uptight. She uses boxes to separate her world and lives under a tight control I think due to her loss of parents at a young age.
These two are opposites but alike as well. both afraid to let someone in and both afraid to let go of the past. Riley though is more live and let live in his attitude except when it comes to Sebastian. Sophie needs control and order. Opposites that are strongly attracted and help the other. Sophie helps Riley see he needs to mature more-with his daughter and real dad. He needs to see that there are reasons things happen and giving people chances to explain can help him move on. when it comes to his daughter, she helps him see that she is spoiled and needs to have a parent and not just a friend.
i hated to see Sophie push Riley away. I also hated to see Riley’s stepdad be the way he was. How he treated Sebastian was wrong to me. I felt for Sebastian in this book. He sacrificed so much for Riley and it was hard to see him honor his son’s wish. In the end though we do see a bridge get offered, a daughter grow up and a love come to fruition even though it was a bumpy ride to get there.
Such a fun book seeing two people come out of their comfort zone and find love.
I really, really love this series and this family. Everyone of them have something to contribute to the story but I really think cranky, meddling Unlce Yank is my favorite! The lengths that he'll go through to get his nieces married off are limitless.
Sophie has always had a huge crush on Riley but being the man whore that he was she didn't foresee anything ever happening between them. She really didn't like the man that he was even if she liked watching him from afar. Drama has popped up the sport's agency owned by her and her family and everyone seems to be otherwise occupied. Spenser was just plain missing. In some weird twist of fate Riley needs to find Spenser as much as Sophie does and invites himself along on the hunt for him.
Sophie was a great character. I loved how she was loyal, but willing to see other's point of view. She also didn't hesitate to walk away from her wants and desires to give Riley the chance he needed to show his daughter that she came first in his life. She had so much empathy on the family end seeing as how she lost her parents young in a plane crash.
I loved Riley from the very beginning. He may have been a manwhore but there was no indication that he led women on or made them believe there was anything more to them than just one night. He was a stand-up guy that loved his daughter and even had a pretty good relationship with his ex and her husband. He spent his whole life trying to overcome the emotional trauma of knowing who his biological father was and knowing that he just didn't want him and gave him to his mom's new husband. It really colored so much of his life, but he hid it well.
The more Sophie and Riley got to know each other the more they liked. It took little time for their mutual admiration to turn into so much more. Their demons however pushed them apart and forced them both running scared. That is until Unlce Yank's announcement on tv that his niece Sophie needed a man and brought all of the crazies out of the woodwork.
I seriously recommend this series. Each book can be read as a standalone but why miss out on a great series by only reading one?
Emotional, Sexy, Funny and so relateable this Opposites attract romance was so riveting and entertaining it just grabs hold of your senses and takes you on a romantic journey bringing together two people that are in desperate need of one another to reach their happily ever after.
Sophie is so sweet and crazy smart, sexy, while Riley is alpha male, uber confident and off the charts hot on the outside they are both very vulnerable and afraid to loose on the inside. (control issues abound ... LOL) Family being of top importance to both is the glue that starts the undeniable bond between them. Loved watching the last Jordan sister fall. Looking forward to more Hot Zone adventures.
Ooh, how I love Carly Phillips' The Hot Zone series! This has quickly become one of my absolute favorite set of books and I was thrilled to be able to dive into this one.
Sophie Jordan is the middle of the Jordan sisters and she works with her eldest sister Annabelle and her younger sister, Micki, at The Hot Zone. Since the death of her parents when she was a child, Sophie has always had to be in control of everything in order to feel safe. When the best friend of her Uncle Yank, and a notorious sports agent in his own right goes missing, Sophie teams up with the unlikeliest of people to try to help locate him.
Riley Nash is a big time quarterback and also the son of Spencer Atkins, the missing sports agent. All Riley has ever wanted is the respect of his father, but that is something that has been hard to come by. When he learns of his father's disappearance, he doesn't hesitate to team up with the beautiful Sophie to try to find him.
The chemistry between Riley and Sophie is instantaneous and the questions become, can they contain their lust and will they be able to locate Spencer before it's too late?
This was another fantastic addition to The Hot Zone series and one I simply couldn't put down. Kudos to Carly Phillips for another great read!
This is the third book out of the three book series, which each book follows a different sisters struggles and path to finding their love.
Absolutely loved this series. Its witty, romantic, funny and down right cute. I love Riley and Sophie's mutual attraction to each other, it is strong and well over due and their barriers from their past and present add another element to each character.
They start their journey by coming together to track down Spencer, Sophie's uncles best friend (a man who treated her like a daughter) and Riley's legitimate biological father. Spencer goes in hiding after his secret is revealed that he is gay. Where in the sports world this may not be accepted as much. In their journey to Florida to find Spencer, the mutual attract between Sophia and Riley ignite. Can they control the lust between each other and can they find Spencer before its too late?
Hot Item Hot Item keeps the sex appeal of the first two books: Hot Stuff and Hot Item but tackles some serious dilemmas and surprising reveals. Sophie is the sister that knows her job and does it well from the background. Too bad recent events have pushed her anonymity into the limelight. A missing friend, disappearing sisters and a business to run have left cool, calm Sophie in a frenzy. On a mission to find her Uncle's friend she joins forces with Riley Nash. A walking temptation to her well ordered life. Carly Phillips tackles the three H's: humor, heart and heat while delivering some enlightening truths and irresistible characters.
She needs a new premise. All of these are about commitment-phobes that delude themselves into the "just one night" or "for a couple of days" relationships and then fall head over heels. There are other differences, but each one of them have come down to that being the basic idea behind the story. I think she's a fun author, and I know with romance there are only so many directions you can go when you have to have a happily-ever-after, but there are plenty of other cliches out there to steal from.
He'll push all her boundaries and make her realize rules are made to be broken.

REVIEW: 3,75 stars--HOT ITEM is the third installment in Carly Phillips contemporary, adult HOT ZONE romance series focusing on the Jordan sisters (Annabelle, Michelle and Sophie) and their Uncle Yank Morgan-owner of the sports agency/PR firm known as The Hot Zone. This is sports PR agent and middle sister and Hot Zone co-owner Sophie Jordan, and professional quarterback Riley Nash’s story line. HOT NUMBER can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty but I recommend reading the series in order as there is an ongoing story line focusing on Uncle Yank and the woman he loves. HOT NUMBER advances the series by one year.
NOTE: The Hot Zone series has been re-edited and re-release with all new covers.
SOME BACKGROUND: Approximately 18 years earlier sports agent Yank Morgan became the sole guardian and parent to his late sister’s three orphaned daughters-Annabelle, Michelle aka Micki, and Sophie Jordan-and in the ensuing years Yank and the Jordan sisters became one of the most successful sports agency and PR firms in the world of sports-The Hot Zone. The Hot Zone series is their story as Yank Morgan struggles to find a happily ever after for the girls (now women) he loves like his own, as well as the fight to keep his own heart from breaking apart.
Told from several third person points of view HOT ITEM ventures downs several paths including the search for Spencer Atkins, and the building romance between Sophie Jordan and quarterback Riley Nash. With the merger of Athletes Only sports agency and the PR firm of The Hot Zone meant the merger of friendship between Yank Morgan and his long time friend Spencer Atkins but a merger that reveals the secret past and life of Spencer Atkins. Hoping to run interference for both of the men that she loves Sophie Jordan finds herself stretched beyond her capabilities when a stranger comes forward looking for answers to the new crises that begins to tear apart the family that she loves. Enter Riley Nash, a man who wants answers as much as Sophie wants answers to Riley’s past.
The relationship between Riley and Sophie begins as a business arrangement such that Riley and Sophie go searching for answers but to different questions and concerns from the past. Riley is a single father who wants nothing to do with settling down, and Sophie needs order in her life, not the chaos that falling in love could potentially bring. The $ex scenes are intimate without the use of sexually graphic language and text.
All of the previous story line couples and characters play secondary and supporting roles including Sophie’s sisters and their husbands: Annabelle and Brandon, Micki and Damien, Uncle Yank and Lola, as well as several employees and temps that come in and out of their lives. We are introduced to Riley’s parents Senator and Mrs. Nash; his teenage daughter Lizzie and ex-wife Lisa; Spencer’s eccentric sisters Darla and Rose, and his niece, Rose’s daughter Amy Stone, as well as fellow and competing sports agent Miguel Cambias, and Hot Zone publicist Cindy James. Amy and Micki’ best friend John Roper’s story is next in Hot Property.
The world building continues to focus on the business of public relations for the rich and famous, and up and coming stars of sports. Uncle Yank believes his matchmaking abilities have found each of his nieces a ‘happily ever after’ and now he is waiting for the grandchildren that each successful relationship is about to produce. I did have one issue in that Micki was supposedly pregnant at the end of book two but no further mention occurs in book three-in fact when Yank ‘demands’ grandchildren from each of his nieces, Micki makes no mention that she if expecting or otherwise- an error in the story line or a miscue in the story.
HOT ITEM is a predictable story line in that the premise is similar in nature to the previous two installments: the men are afraid to commit; the women are afraid to love fearing another loss in their life. The characters are colorful but battle one another for control; the romance struggles with a lack of communication and fear of the unknown. Sophie’s obsession with order and control finds our heroine struggling in both life and love when she runs from the man that calls to her heart.
I’ve been waffling over this one because, overall, I enjoyed this book, but it wasn’t Sophie and Riley’s romance that held my interest. I liked it, it was sweet, smexy and enjoyed the whole opposites attract thing they had going on, but it was Spencer’s story line as well as a surprise plot twist that snuck into the mix, that kept me turning the pages to see how it would all end up.
Even though I wasn’t all in with Riley and Sophie it isn’t to say I didn’t like them. I did and found it interesting that though on the surface they appeared different. Riley is spontaneous and has a fly by the seat of his pants mentality and Sophie is all about following the rules and sticking to a schedule, but they have the same issues and simply go about dealing, or not dealing with them differently. The reason I wasn’t all in with them was because their road reminded me too much of Micki and Damian’s. Having read Hot Number recently I saw too many similarities in how everything happened and it was just a struggle for me to be fully invested. But with that being said, I did like how they balanced each other out and liked seeing their perceptions shift.
I really wanted to love this one because I have a thing for opposites attract tropes, but it just didn’t get there. The prologue was awesome but after that things just dragged for me and as much as I hate to say it, it was because it was just too similar to Hot Number for me. I needed a change of pace and it didn’t happen. But at about the 50% mark things started to pick up because of the whole Spencer issue, which had a nice little surprise plot twist within it, as well as how Riley’s personal life played into the story. It gave a little more depth to the story and characters and was a good vehicle to get both Riley and Sophie to work through their issues.

I really didn't care for this book. I found it slightly boring. Not surprising, because I found Sophie the least interesting. Middle child syndrome I guess. I just didn't like how things played out with the romance and the other storylines, particularly with Riley's parents. Overall, this series was underwhelming.
Riley has no problem openly ogling his woman while she's on the phone, “Of course. Hang on while I find a pen and paper.” She wandered the room naked in search of her purse, completely aware of Riley’s intense eyes following her every movement..." There are times Sophie doesn't realize the affect she has on Riley, “I can’t sleep with pants on,” she’d explained through a yawn, oblivious to how those words had turned him on." I loved this book, I love seeing the sister and their men. Well and Uncle Yank of course the man is crazy.
LOL Fantastic! The best so far! .... 03/08/2013 Review .............................. 03/12/2017 Review:
Let me tell you what I loved the most about Hot Item … this book could have had a shit load of societal drama incorporated into it that would have certainly taken away from one of the sweetest romantic journeys I’ve read in a while. But it didn’t AND said societal issues were also not glossed over, they just didn’t take center stage. They happened. They were dealt with. The end. (I know what you’re thinking … what the heck is she saying right now? You will know when you read this story lol)
This was my favorite of the three sister’s stories. There was something soooooo easy about Riley Nash. He knew what he wanted and he patiently went after it. Sophie Jordan was a hard nut to crack. She wore that middle child syndrome like armor! Of all three sisters, she had the biggest fear of loss. Put that all together with her control issues and you have yourself a woman determined not to let go of her heart for fear of it being destroyed.
I had #FEELS from the moment I began reading this book. Poor Sophie, her world was crumbling around her and spiraling out of control. And for a person like her, that’s just not acceptable LOL Cue her patient and understanding Knight in Shining Armor, Riley **happy sigh** From their intimacy to their detective work, Riley knew just how to handle Sophie’s crazy control issues. It just warmed my heart from beginning to end. They BOTH warmed my heart.
There’s quite a few secondary characters that add flare to this romance story and I think now, with this re-read, I am even more hopeful that Carly will maybe add some short-stories to this already incredible series. I wouldn’t be upset if Spencer got a story, short or full length and I wouldn’t take offense to reading maybe a short story on Miguel & Cindy and I would REALLY not be upset if Yank & Lola got their own story … from beginning to end :) *hint hint* And I’m sure once I re-read Hot Property, there will be a few more additional stories I wouldn’t mind reading more about :)

I have, as of late, given myself unapologetic leeway to read romances-- well-written, thoughtful romances with believable characters.
This book, however, does not meet that description.
Choosing to read this book because it had a Goodreads' score of 3.95 stars, did not serve me well. Even the abstract is misleading. The main female character is depicted as the co-owner of a top PR firm. I expected her to be more take charge with confidence than driven to put out fires to quell anxiety. I'm all for characters written with flaws, but somehow (and I'm sorry I don't have a specific instance at the moment) her characterization rings askew. The abstract also implies that there is a mysterious disappearance of one her top agents. Don't anticipate an edge-of-your-seat mystery--because there isn't one.
I was half tempted to give this book one star so that I could, in some small way, effect the average star rating and, by so doing, save the next reader my regret. I am definitely suffering from reader's remorse.
Hot Item is book 3 in the Hot Zone series and it's Sophie's turn at Uncle Yank's match making schemes! Have I mentioned I love all these characters? I want to be apart of them! Sophie is cool, calm, under control and doesn't date clients. But when Riley becomes a major part of her world? Those rules of hers fly out the window. There's no denying these two had chemistry for dayyysssss! They were burning up the pages and I just couldn't put the book down. I loved the aspect that Riley's daughter added to the story. Sophie had to deal with not only Riley as an alpha man and sports star, but as a dad too! That added a whole different element to their story! But I loved how Sophie was still her same, take charge personality! As per usual, Carly Phillips has written another story that made me laugh, swoon, and fall in love!
Some time ago, I read the other books in the Hot Zone series. I enjoyed them, but honestly couldn't remember enough to compare this one to the others. I rated this book on how well-written it was, that the characters both came to realizations about themselves (very important to me as a reader that it's not one-sided), and that the book was a page-turner for me. From beginning to end, I wanted to know what would happen next and how it would end. I enjoyed Riley and Sophie's chemistry and banter. I liked "being in their heads", listening as they grappled with their neuroses and being mature enough to take a chance to get beyond it. (I based my review as if this was a stand alone book, not comparing it to the others in the series.)
You know what I don't understand, yet love? How did Phillips manage to make each of these sisters so relatable? Seriously, every issue they have, I feel like I have felt at one time or another. I was excited for Sophie's story and her analytic brain did not disappoint. I loved Riley, too. His relationship with Lizzy was very annoying at times, but I understood where he was coming from. I also enjoyed the resolution that came with Spencer. That scene may have been brief, but it packed quite the wallop.
That being said, the Harlan portion of the story really bothered me. Like....he was actually a criminal and his son will never know that? Also, the Cindy/Miguel storyline felt unnecessary.

The last book in the series written by Carly Phillips. This final installment focuses on Sophie, the youngest of the Jordan sisters. She is paired up with Riley Nash, a football player who trusts her with a deep and dark secret.
They each have their own obstacles to overcome, but in the end, discover they are strong enough to overcome them.
Their chemistry is great and there's lots of sexual tension and innuendos. Lots of comical scenes as well.
I've always wanted to date an athlete and through Carly Phillips's books, I'm able to do just that! All I can say is, love it! If you love romance and sports, this is a series you might like!
Liked this book. It wasn't my favorite in this series but it was cute. There were Riley's eccentric aunts, a spoiled teenage daddy's girl, his Austere politician step-dad and his biological father who's sexuality was just revealed. Riley had enough on his shoulders but he had sexy, smart and single publicist Sophie Jordan by his side. With the heat sizzling between them, it isn't long before Riley realize that Sophie is the real deal. How can he work past the walls she has erected in fear of losing the one's she loved as she lost her parent.
Also, the second book in the series mentioned that Anabelle and Brandon had a daughter and named her Sydney.
This one didnt give me a "feel good" ending, almost to many heavy subjects for a light hearted book, politics, homosexuality, teenage drama etc.. And did annabelle have a girl or a boy? Lol in the beginning Sophie asks her how is my nephew?... At the end she asks the same question... Except how is my niece? Lol
The least fav among the 3 books...
Jadilah mereka cs-an).
Daaaannn (lagi), kantor baru mereka yang setelah merger namanya jadi Athletes Only sepertinya disabotase orang.
Ceritanya tuh terlalu njelimet ajah gituuuuuh....
Tapi balik lagi. Tetap semangat baca buku keempatnya. hwaiting!!
Hot Item is Book 3 in The Hot Zone series and is about Sophie and Riley. Sophie is the middle of the Jordan sisters, orphaned as young girls, and raised by their Uncle Yank, a prominent sports agent. Sophie likes to be in control and on top of things, so while her older sister Annabelle is on maternity leave, and her younger sister Micki is on her honeymoon, she has to step up and take care of everything at their newly-merged firm, Athletes Only and The Hot Zone.
When a gossip column announces that Spencer Atkins, the top agent from Athletes Only, is gay, he disappears, right before the football draft. Spencer is like a father figure to Sophie, so she is worried about him and is determined to find him. Three days later, Riley shows up at her office looking for Spencer. And he drops a bomb - Spencer is Riley's biological father. When Sophie finds out Spencer has two sisters in Florida, she figures that's her best chance at finding him...and Riley invites himself to go with her.
Sophie has always had a thing for Riley (her Uncle Yank is his agent), but she doesn't do jocks - in any sense of the word. He's a Heisman trophy winner and is a known playboy. She doesn't want any part of that, but there's something about him that draws her to him. Riley admits to being a playboy. He's divorced with a thirteen year old daughter who is the world to him. There's never been anyone he "dated" that he felt worthy of meeting his daughter. But now, the two are sort of forced together on this mission to find Spencer...and it's getting really tough to fight their feelings for each other.
This has been my favorite story of the series. Probably because I can relate to many of Sophie's issues. I loved being back in The Hot Zone universe and getting to know Sophie and learning more about Yank and Spencer. This was another great story that had all the emotions: sweet romance, super hot sex scenes, anger, heartbreak, miscommunication, laughter, even a little danger. Get your copy and find out what happens with Sophie and Riley!
I liked this one! I was intrigued by Sophie Jordan from the start of the series. She's the middle sister, and always has her nose in a book. She's a little compulsive, and she has some quirks. She likes to fully understand things, so she's constantly researching things, and then spouting out her knowledge about them. She's also shy when it comes to personal relationships outside her family, as well as apart from her job as a publicist for the family sports management agency/PR firm run by her 2 sisters, her Uncle Yank and herself. They've now merged with another agency, run by her uncle's best friend, Spencer, so they all run things together. It's almost time for the NFL draft, and things are all going sideways for Sophie. She's been left with Spencer to cover things while her older sister is on maternity leave, and her younger sister, as well as her uncle, are on their respective honeymoons. But, when some personal secrets of Spencer's hits the tabloids, he disappears and leaves Sophie to handle everything on her own. Enter Riley Nash.
Riley has his own big secrets under wraps, and he's hoping to keep them that way. So, he has his own reasons for needing to find Spencer, and fast! He comes to Sophie so they can help each other each get what they need. He's been a client of her uncle's since he was a rookie, so they've known each other for a while, and there's always been a little flirtation between them, but it never went any further. But, the more time they spend together, the more they both realize that their chemistry isn't just going away any time soon. Neither of them really see a future together, but they are interested in exploring their physical connection. But, issues and disagreements constantly crop up between them. Also, Spencer's teenage daughter throws many a kink in the works, as teen girls tend to do.
I really liked both of the main characters, but they each had their own sets of issues to work through before they had any hope of lasting together as a couple. Many of their issues were deep-seeded ones from their childhoods that were never properly dealt with, and the effects of those were long lasting. Sophie has a huge fear of abandonment after she and her sisters were orphaned as children, and went to live with Uncle Yank. Riley has issues accepting love and care from people, and also, he spoils his daughter horribly because he doesn't want her to ever feel he wasn't there for her, even though he and her mom are long divorced. Those are things that stem from issues in his childhood as well. They both really seemed to grow and change as they were getting closer to each other, but of course that wasn't without problems!
Overall, I really liked this one, and I also appreciated that the heroine was the one that needed to do most of the groveling at the end. It always seems like the hero is the one to horribly screw up and has to grovel to get his girl back. It was refreshing to see it the other way around! I've enjoyed this series about the Jordan sisters and their family. It appears there's one more story in the series, which is about youngest sister Micki's (the heroine of book 2) best friend, John, a pro athlete, and another publicist at the family firm. I'm looking forward to it!
I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.
This series is about the Jordan sisters and their Uncle Yank Morgan. The three sisters, Annabelle, Michelle and Sophie lost their parents in a car accident at a young age and were raised by their mother’s brother, Uncle Yank. They all run a top sports management agency called Hot Zone.
Sophie Jordan is cool & collected and loves her daily routine running her family's sports agency, but prefers to stay behind the scenes. But with big sister on maternity leave and little sis on her honeymoon, she's forced to handle a recent media crisis surrounding the disappearance of super agent Spencer Atkins. She has kept a strict no-dating-clients policy but spending so much time with one of their clients is making it hard for her to stick with her own rule.
Riley Nash is a star NFL quarterback and notorious bad boy. He is spontaneous and can make quick decisions and change up what he is planning to do without any prior thought. The only time he seems to stick to something is when his thirteen year old daughter is involved.
Okay, again not a bad story but not a favorite of mine at all. I did NOT care for Riley’s daughter at all!! It is one thing to be a teenage girl it is another to be a complete brat and I felt like she was a spoiled little snot. I did enjoy learning more about Spencer Atkins & his relationship to everyone and his back story. That is what makes these books interesting is the fact there is multiple plots going on within the main story.
Sophie Jordan is the middle sister in all ways possible. Always with her nose in a book, ready to provide an explanation or answer for anything her older and younger sister can think to ask, ready to come to the aid of anyone with a gentle hand and a controlling manner. Growing up without parents has also made Sophie Jordan terrified of losing her precious control. Enter Riley Nash, star quarterback of a NY football team, and never one to pass up a good time. Riley and Sophie are thrown together when Spencer Atkins, one half of the newly formed partnership of the sports agency/pr agency that Sophie's uncle and legal guardian co-owns. Spencer is Riley's newly discovered illegitimate (and gay) birth father. When Spencer goes missing after the news of Spencer's sexuality is revealed, Sophie is tasked with finding him. Riley just wants answers; like why Spencer wants nothing to do with him. Sophie has always made it a rule for herself to never get involved with the sports stars she or her Uncle Yank represent, and since Riley is represented by Yank, Sophie has vowed to never get involved. Except that Riley is HAWT, and makes Sophie feel things she has never felt before. After a whirlwind trip to Florida in search of Spencer, Sophie and Riley share an explosive night together. Followed by a day where Sophie throws her control out the window and attempts to enjoy herself. What follows is a comedy of errors. Riley, who has issues stemming from not being good enough for a father who never wanted him, and Sophie who thinks that if she can control things, won't have to deal with loss again, like she did with the loss of her parents at a young age. But when both have feelings that they are unaccustomed to, add in some weird shenanigans at Sophie's place of work, her meddling uncle trying to marry off his last niece, and a daughter from Riley's first marriage who isn't too thrilled with her dad moving on, and both Riley and Sophie have to deal with their fight or flight instincts. Can they trust each other enough to make a go of their relationship, or will Sophie cut her losses before she can get hurt? While I didn't love this as much as I loved Hot Number, this was still a great read. It had mystery, romance, a teenage girl with an attitude, meddling, zany relatives, and of course, a happily ever after. I really enjoy how all of the characters are well developed, the dialog is thought provoking, sweet, and funny, and I had a smile on while reading this the entire time.
I read this novel just before Christmas, and I've only just gotten around to writing the review but I'd actually forgotten the characters and the plot, which is not a good sign.
The book ticked the boxes on the 'Contemporary Romance checklist'. Attractive couple? Check. Steamy romance? Check. Crazy relatives? Check… But the whole thing felt like a grotesque parody and I never felt that it was grounded enough for me to fully enjoy. The Uncle announcing to the world that Sophie was on the marriage-market… the crazy obsessed guys that this spawned… the whole plot being based around one man coming out as gay… I rolled my eyes so many times, because it just wasn't real, it was far too dramatic and without substance.
I liked both Sophie and Riley, but they weren't loveable. Riley was the wrong side of cocky and Sophie could probably taste wood with that stick so far up her arse. The supporting characters were parodies, and I didn't much care for them either.
Overall, I read 'Hot Item' and I didn't stop, but it wasn't the best example of a contemporary romance.
I read this series years ago, it has now been updated and reissued. I'd forgotten how much I loved this series. There's mystery, angst, sizzling chemistry and some laughs in Hot Item by Carly Phillips. Sophie is the middle Jordan sister. She doesn't date athletes. Riley is a football star who's family secrets explode into headlines. Riley and Sophie are complete opposites but can't deny the Asian between them. However, they need to get past Sophie's fear and Rileys need to keep women at a distance if they are to have a relationship. I love the back and forth dialogue between the characters. Once you get to the third book it's like being part of the family and your just sucked into all the Chas. I just love Yank. You never know what he's going to do and he's certainly been up to some mischief in this book. Go one click it you won't regret it! ****I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Readers Copy of this book.****
