Rate this book
Music educators everywhere believe that music is for everyone.

However, it’s clear that “music for everyone” is an ideal that is out of reach for many of today’s learners as our schools become more diverse in numerous ways.

In order to make “music for everyone” a reality, music education must shift to place equitable, culturally responsive practices at the center.

Music as a Vehicle: A Practical Guide to Implementing Culturally Responsive Teaching in Today’s Music Classrooms is a bold and actionable guide for music educators ready to make that shift.

In Music As a Vehicle, Ashley Cuthbertson shares personal stories from her career as a PK-12 music educator and educational consultant to provide the step by step framework that has helped hundreds of music educators create affirming learning environments and design fresh and engaging music curriculum and instruction that meets the diverse and ever-evolving needs of today’s learners.

This book is a must-have for all music educators looking to:

Gain clarity on how to remove obstacles and barriers to equitable learning in their music programs
Go beyond the surface, to deeply understanding the cultural frames of reference of their learners in order to create an affirming learning environment where learners feel a sense of belonging
Learn a process for selecting repertoire that provides pathways for learners to learn more deeply about themselves, others, and the world around them
Design music curriculum that connects to the real-world, providing relevant learning opportunities that will engage learners
Ashley’s approach represents an answer to the urgent call to make engaging, high quality music education that connects with all learners the norm, and not the exception.

This book is a great introduction to culturally responsive teaching in music. She gives great examples and dispels lots of misconceptions. Definitely a book I’m going to reread multiple times.
