Nana’s Christmas Letters

Rate this book
Christmas approaches but instead of celebrating, Angel sinks deep into sorrow after the sudden passing of her grandmother. Christmas had been Nana’s favourite time of year. She infected everyone around her with joy and love; two things Angel wasn’t sure she would ever feel again now that her only living relative was gone.
Details emerge about Nana’s illness and fills Angel with anger. The perfect target to release her fury upon is Cane, Nana’s doctor and friend
Cane had promised Carol that he would watch out for her granddaughter and delivers a letter to Angel that leads to the old family tradition of the advent calendar. As Angel navigates the daily letters lovingly tucked into the pockets of each day in December, she begins to understand her grandmother and learns the true meaning of Christmas in Nana’s Christmas letters

I discovered Nana’s Christmas Letters by Sandy Totten at a local bookstore on Canadian Independent Bookstore Day. I was attracted to the beautiful cover and that it was written by a local author.

Angel had just finished her exams and residency to practice family medicine when she received a call that her Nana had passed away due to lung cancer. Angel spends the long drive home stewing and building up her anger at why she was left in the dark, why her Nana didn’t tell her she was sick. Angel would have been there for her, there was no need for her to die alone. Angel was her last living relative. She finally arrives home to find a stranger (who just so happens to be gorgeous) in her Nana’s house, making cookies in the kitchen. Armed with an umbrella, she confronts the intruder only to find out that he is the new local doctor, her Nana’s doctor. Not only did he know about her Nana’s illness and not inform her, he is also making Angel's comfort cookies. Cookies her Nana always used to make her when she came home. Cookies that her Nana wouldn’t give her the recipe for, but this stranger, Cane, had it.

A couple of days later, Cane drops by the house with a letter from her Nana. In the letter, her Nana explains a few things to Angel, including why she taught Cane how to make her cookies and her reasons why she didn’t tell her she was dying. She then directed Angel to their annual Christmas Advent Calendar, which has been all set up. In the pockets are chocolates and letters from her Nana with activities to be done each day, counting down to her Nana's favourite season. A season she usually starts decorating for once Halloween is over. (The one year she started decorating before Halloween, her house was egged.) The letters included things to do, like choose your charity for the next year, support a local business, and cut down a tree. Mixed in with the activities, her Nana talks to her, helping Angel with her grieving process, encouraging her to forgive the doctor and her neighbour.

I found this novel to be a sweet, closed-door romance that encourages the true meaning of Christmas. The activities in the advent calendar were well thought out, and it would be the perfect gift to give someone at any time of the year.
