This book took firefighter fantasy and twisted into a story that I could not put down! Yes he’s the older brother of Luke who is dating a girl that he once almost took home from the bar- what???? Yes hoped we’ve all had that one drunken night and it later slaps in the face years later LOL! This does take some twists and you want to hate Luke at times for being just ugh him, but at the same time darn that epilogue leaves an open story that I have to know what happened? So back to Maddie, a girl who tried to do everything to stand by her man and that pull to the brother is just too much. You fall in love and yes your heart breaks at times- can’t spoil all I can say is that it was worth it and I’ll be stalking for the next book!

** SPOILERS in review **

I was lucky enough to receive an ARC of this book, and
let me tell you-the spice was spicing! I absolutely loved
it!
This book had everything I look for: a captivating
storyline, likable characters, and just the right amount of heat. Maddison's character development was a highlight for me. I loved seeing her grow and find the courage to follow her dreams and passion, with Jax supporting her every step of the way.
Learning about both Maddison's and Jax's pasts-and
their relationships with their parents added so much
depth to the story. The revelation that it was Jax who
rescued her from the car years ago was such a satisfying and heartfelt twist. It felt like fate really played a role in bringing them back together.
Honorable mention to Jax, who literally brought his
whole firehouse with him to evacuate a restaurant
because Maddison was on a date with someone else-
swoon!
Overall, this was a great read, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. If you're looking for a book with heart, spice, and
characters you can root for, this one's a must-read!

The spice was spicing all throughout this book! If you don't like spice, don't read the book. If you like spice...what are you waiting for?

I've read a lot of books where the spice is just too much and overexaggerated but this was so well written and the spicy scenes weren't over the top and unrealistic. Let's just say they were real enough that my hubby was the real winner when I finished the book 😉

About the book: Dual POV/ First person / Present tense / MF Romance / High heat
Tropes:

🏔 Age Gap (10 years)
🌲Forced Proximity
🏔 Possessive MMC
🌲Consent King
🏔 Small town setting
🌲Spicy scenes

This book hooked me from the start. To say that I loved this book is an understatement. This book was so deliciously messy, funny, spicy, and heartwarming that I couldn't put it down. Maddy (FMC) is a sassy, supportive, sexy, and fierce woman, and Jax (MMC) is a possessive, strong, and caring man with a dirty mouth and the goods to back it up. Maddy and Jax had undeniable chemistry upon meeting. Unfortunately, Jax was uncomfortable with the 10-year age gap and wanted to give Maddy time to live and grow up. Little did he know, the girl he had been pining for would show up at his doorstep as his younger brother Luke's date a few months after meeting. Four years later, Luke and Maddy move in with Jax. Jax and Maddy fight their attraction for Luke's sake, but after their relationship ends and Luke leaves (for work), they give in to their primal urges. This book is a must-read!

ARC Review
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️

╰┈➤ Plot:

╰⪼ "He's a grouchy, bossy, egotistical know-it-all."
When her deadbeat-boyfriend loses his job and proposes the two of them move into his brother's spare room back in their hometown until they can save up for their own place, Maddison's only real hesitation is the brother in question, Jax. The thing is, Maddison and Jax have a bit of a history. It only spanned an evening but it left its mark on the both of them. Or, so she thought. But through the course of her relationship with Luke, Jax has been cold and distant. It must not have meant anything to the man, right?

╰⪼ "You're a mouthy little menace, aren't you?"
Jax is down bad for his younger brother's girlfriend. The woman who should have been his... would have been his had certain ✨ events ✨ not transpired as they did. Such is life, right? Only, now he's temporarily sheltering the love his life and he can't even claim her in front of God and Country.

˚₊· ͟͟͞͞➳❥ "She's smiling at him, and I don't like that she's giving her smiles away so freely to someone who isn't me. I want to hoard them all for myself."

────⋆.˚ ✩ ⋆˙⟡────

I honestly could NOT put this book down once I had the opportunity to begin. This book is so... cozy? I thought the pacing was absolutely perfect! I wanted to snuggle into a blanket with a warm coffee and lose myself into the lives of Maddison and Jax. These characters were so refreshing! They had real depth to them. Maddison lost her parents in a tragic accident and it left both physical and emotional scars, but we really see her blossom and finally begin to heal. Which, by the way... love reading a FMC with a traditionally blue collar hobby. Like, hello?? My girl knows her way around wood (pun intended).

Meanwhile, Jax sacrificed a chunk of his life to raise his younger brother after the passing of their parents. For so long it's been he and Luke against the world, even as he watches Luke pull away. Throughout the course of the book we see Jax finally begin to live for himself. There were several moments that brought the sting of tears.

I'm not blowing smoke when I say, this has become one of my favorite books. I absolutely have to get my hands on a physical copy. Even the side characters were a delight! (Please, PLEASE give me an Andrew and Hazel book... Or just a book where Hazel is the FMC). BUT! Andrew? Hilarious. This man is determined to catch his boss up with a properly hilarious joke. And when he manages it? Beautifully executed, Andrew. 10/10, no notes. I LOVED the emotions explored in this book. The way Jax was so devoted to his younger brother while balancing that against KNOWING Maddie is the love of his life was such a rollercoaster that I wasn't prepared for. And Maddie is so beautifully selfless and loyal, even if almost to a fault.

˚₊· ͟͟͞͞➳❥ "A deep chuckle rumbles out of his chest, and it makes my knees tremble. "I wasn't asking, sweetheart.""

Let me just say, I love me a man who steamrolls because he selfishly has his beloved's best interest at heart.

────⋆.˚ ✩ ⋆˙⟡────

˚₊· ͟͟͞͞➳❥ "Sweet girl, if you wanted to wear one of my shirts wile you play with this pretty pussy, all you had to do was ask."

The spice was??? Top tier. It was placed so perfectly throughout the plot and hello?? The MOUTH on this man?? I'll take FIVE of them, please. Honestly, I hope this is the beginning of a very, VERY long career for Nicole VanAuken because she was SERVING with this book. Jax is my ideal man, full-stop. His utter love and devotion for his family - for MADDISON - was just delicious. Also, mad props for Jax using toys in the bedroom. We love a man who knows what he's doing with the tools in his arsenal.

────⋆.˚ ✩ ⋆˙⟡────

Honestly... Luke deserves his own section. I'm so, SO (surprisingly) thrilled that Luke was a redeemable character. I have several theories on what happened while he was attending college and I'm eager to discover whether or not I've sussed it out. ALSO I DON'T WANT TO SPOIL IT... but that epilogue was EVERYTHING?? Ugh, my whole heart for her decision to follow-up this book up with a MM romance. ICONIC, truly! And I'm gnawing on drywall for this sequel. If she writes it, I'm reading it.

Ohhhhhh Myyyyyyy Gooooosssshhhhhh!!!!!

This book will have me in a hangover! I'm more of a dark romance/romantasy reader but good-freaking-gaawwwddd this one snatched me up, gobbled me down to my soul, spat me out and leaves me wanting more. Maddie and Jax encounters brief moments that lead to an awkward stance. Then more awkward circumstances leads to them being alone in the same house to deal with their thoughts, feelings and their undeniable attraction toward each other. The messed up situation turns into a beautiful story between the two of them. I laughed! I swooned! I bawled my eyes out! I gasped, laid my kindle down to pace and take a moment to digest and returned. This book has all the hallmark vibes mixed with intense drama, spice and vocabulary that is very fitting!!! What an honor to be an ARC for this wonderful debut ✨️📚✨️

I LOVED IT!!! THE TENSION, THE BANTER!!!!
My heart could not handle this!

Our MFC Maddie is an interior designer and our MMC Jax is a mechanic/ firefighter.

She is the little brother's ex, but what happens when he finally does give in... OH MY GOOOODDDD. the tension snapped and they both fall to the deep end my heart loved it and also with how supportive the MMC is and the protectiveness. The last quarter of this book had my heart in a chokehold i just couldnt put it down.

I had the amazing opportunity to be an ARC reader for this talented author, and let me tell you, I was not disappointed! The characters of Maddie and Jax are so beautifully written, with Maddie's sassiness perfectly complementing Jax's possessive yet sweet demeanor. The chemistry between them practically sizzles off the pages, making for a seriously hot read.

The restaurant scene was positively scorching, and I couldn't help but wish I was as lucky as Maddie in that moment. Jax's endearing habit of calling her "sweetheart" had me swooning every time, and I found myself longing for a partner like him (sorry, hubby!)

And don't even get me started on Luke and his mysterious secret...I am already counting down the days until I can find out what he's been hiding. Overall, this book is a must-read for anyone who loves a steamy romance with well-developed characters and plenty of passion. I can't wait for more from this author!!

2.5⭐️ the om sex scene ruined it for me.

-Dual pov
-Age gap 10 years
-ex bfs brother, secret relationship
-No owd
-Omd- the H’s brother is her ex.
In the beginning of the book (ch.5) when h and the ex are still together the H comes home and hears them having sex, he looks through the open door and notices she seems to just be going through the motions to get it over with but he makes eye contact with the h and he basically has a wank while watching her and she gets off watching him 🤢
The ex and h break up in ch.7 after she catches him kissing ow, she had been planning to end it anyway but this happened before she got the chance.
-Third act breakup, the ex finds out about them and the h leaves because she doesn’t want to come between them and he doesn’t stop her. I think it’s a few week’s separation til he gets his head out of his ass.
-HEA
-Epilogue one month later it’s from Luke the ex’s pov he’s at the h & H’s engagement party and he meets his best friend’s dad and it’s setting up for their book. So it’ll be an MM age gap romance.

This was a fast read, and I liked the characters. But not to the extent of really loving it and devouring every word the character said to each other.

I caught Jax's 'past' with Maddie straight away, so it wasn't a surprising twist. Other than the ex-boyfriend's thing, Maddie and Jax being together while Luke was away, this doesn't have that much of a plot. I felt a bit dissatisfied, but still was a somewhat enjoyable read.

Thank you the author agency for an arc, all opinions are my own

Absolutely loved every minute of this story. Maddie was so relatable when it came to dealing with her trauma and her relationship with Luke versus her relationship with Jax. I was literally SHOUTING for her to just jump Jax’s bones at one point.

The spice scenes were wonderful, and flowed nicely and did not make me cringe with over-use. They were perfect for the chemistry between Maddie and Jax. Had me sweating start to finish.

I was worried with the nail-biter moment, when Maddie finds out about Jax and the accident. I was worried she would feel betrayed and make matters worse, but nope. Maddie knows why Jax didn’t say anything. That’s a key element to their relationship & it shines through out the story.

But THEN…. We are alluded to Luke having some secrets that I am dying to know about. What did he do that made him leave college and why is it a betrayal to Jax and Maddie? I need those answer and now I eagerly await for book 2 😊😊😊

I love it when I come across a new author’s debut novel and it is freaking amazing! Jax Parker with his pretty words and need to protect but with the years of angst and heartbreak had me immediately in love. The first time he gives her a “good girl”…oh my holy hotness. This book was so fun and well written. I loved the glimpses of fate we saw bringing Maddie and Jax together each time. They are so cute together and the spice was on point. I had an idea of what was going on with Luke and I was right about part of it. That epilogue! I can’t wait for his book!

His Secret Obsession by Nicole Vanaucken was definitely an emotional roller coaster of a book, but in the best way possible! The character building and attention to their own personal details made me feel like I actually knew these characters, I felt their emotions and was proud of the accomplishments they made as if they weren’t just characters in a book but people I would have drinks with. The spice in this book was 10/10! It was so realistic in the fact that any of those scenes could 100% happen, and a few of them had me blushing right along with Maddie! Nicole’s writing style is what I would imagine all readers would want from every book! I can’t wait to read more of her work!

I enjoyed this story very much. It was a surprise read for me because I went in blind. I loved the characters. Jax is so yummy - Maddie was sweet but I got a bit frustrated with her in the beginning with Luke but Jax brought out her sass.I love love Mary!!! I’m happy there was a HEA and as irritated as I was with Luke he redeemed himself and I’m reallllllly looking forward to his story (it sounds hot already!) plus I need to know his secret!

"You need a pair of strong arms to come home to after a rough day? Mine are more than capable."

A wonderful debut from Nicole VanAuken. Jax and Maddison take the reader on one wild ride of emotions. My heart went out to Jax from the very beginning. He is merely a man trying to do the right thing for everyone except himself. He deserves so much happiness and Maddie is just the girl to give it to him.

I was a bit apprehensive at first about this one since she is Jax's brother's ex-girlfriend but the way it is written...magnificent. The chemistry and tension between these two is off the charts. They fit so perfect together. Even though I really wanted to dislike Jax's brother, Luke, it was hard not to by the time the story was coming to an end. I swear his character grows in maturity in a matter of pages.

Then there is the epilogue and what leads to book two.....sign me up for that now! I cannot wait to see where the author is going to take this next character's story!!!

This book became my obsession! I finished it in a day--couldn't put it down! I loved the characters instantly, they're realistic, easy to relate to, and everything about them and their past was revealed so well. It is *very* spicy and Jax was the best kind of male character in my opinion! The book as a whole was well written and an easy, sweet read that kept you rooting for them.

The only drawback for me is the reveal at the end about what the next book will be showed it will be a trope I don't really care to read--vastly different from this one. I'm invested in the characters though, so it will be a hard choice for me on whether I read book 2.

No way is this a debut novel. I am obsessed. It could have gone on forever and I wouldn’t have stopped reading it. I will absolutely be reading any and everything that Nicole Vanauken releases. And I will definitely be signing up for the ARC copy of book two if given the opportunity.

Tropes:
🏔️Age Gap
🏔️Ex’s Older Brother
🏔️Forced Proximity
🏔️Possessive MMC
🏔️Secret Pining
🏔️Small Town

Jax Parker has secretly pined after Maddie for years. After meeting one night four years ago, she hasn’t left his mind. The only problem is a few months after their initial meeting, Luke, Jax’s younger brother, brings her home as his new girlfriend. When Maddie nor Jax acknowledge that they’ve met before, they immediately scarf down whatever feelings they had. When Maddie and Luke’s relationship goes up in flames, it’s Jax who offers her a place to stay when she has nowhere else to go. But now that Luke isn’t around, will they be able to keep their feelings..or hands..to themselves?

Jax Parker is an absolute man. An absolutely swoon-worthy man. He is strong, safe, possessive, kind, and caring. But also completely dominating when it matters. He never hesitates to let his emotions be known to those he cares about, especially his little brother’s ex-girlfriend. I mean he cleared a whole freaking restaurant for her when she was on a date with another man. *Swoons internally*

Maddison Raddix, Maddie, has spent the last few years of her life in a rollercoaster. After losing her parents in a tragic accident at 18, she’s spent the last four years in a relationship with Luke. A relationship that has felt like it was over for quite some time. Not to mention that she still secretly thinks about his brother, Jax. Maddie is supportive, kind, and so deserving of love.

And the tension between Jax and Maddie? Oh. My. God. They took me on a rollercoaster to say the least. Between banter and pent up desire between the two of them, my kindle should have combust in flames itself. Their relationship is beautiful and heartwarming. The way that Jax loves her is so pure. I have never rooted for a fictional couple more in my life.

VanAuken did a wonderful job on this novel. Everything flows so well. The spice to plot ratio is just right, leaving you turning the page for more. The attention to detail is perfect, giving you little surprises throughout. Overall, I loved everything about this book. I have already recommended to a few book besties and will continue to do so!

"I love my brother, but we both know he doesn’t deserve you,"
Page 78.

This book was really good, apart from a few major scenes. 50% to the end was just sex and no feelings with a million "second chance" between the two characters.

Second chance? Nope it's a thousand chances. Do they want to be together? Yes. Will they get together? Yes. Do they break up a lot? Yes. Do they eventually stay together? Also yes.

The epilogue was in Luke's pov which I never understand why author's do this as it's not his book. I also don't know why Caleb (Luke's friend) invited his dad to Luke's brother's engagement party??

The only 3 scenes I didn't like:

1. Luke is fucking Maddie (they were dating until 25%). Jax walks in, stands in the doorway and jerks off to his brother and crush?? If I ever accidentally walked in on my siblings I'd be scarred for life and leaving the room immediately 🤮

2. Maddie and Jax are kissing, they almost end up fucking but she brings up her ex (Luke) so Jax doesn't want to picture her with his brother so he says he can't do this and walks out. UNDERSTANDABLE. I don't like that Maddie then arranges to go on a blind date immediately?! You can't claim to love a guy but then immediately go on a date with a stranger because he won't fuck you!!

3. Page 202 - A rose toy, to be exact. It’s been going viral on TikTok the last few weeks.
TikTok shop is as bad as Temu and all the rest of them. I certainly do NOT want to read about these shops in books. And I do NOT want to hear them selling sex toys 😭.

Truth be told I only found this book after kindle told me Luke's book was book 2. I didn't even want to read this one initially but figured I should read 1 then 2. 🤷🏻‍♀️

There are spoilers so stop reading if you don't want to read them. I use these to remember what I liked about the books I read since I read so much so I may add more later.

I really enjoyed this book a lot. It was a fast, spicy HEA, with the promised bonus of a second book in the series.

Maddison is the MFC. A few months before turning 17 she and her parents are in a car accident. Her parents die and she is rescued by a firefighter who she credits with saving her life. At 19 she's at the local bar (small town), saves the hot guy from an obnoxious girl, strikes up conversation and ends up straddling him in the front of his truck. Their time is cut short and each go their own way. We do learn that he's been keeping an eye on her via social media with plans to seek her out once she turns 20 since he's a decade older than her.

4 years later, Maddie and her new boyfriend, Luke, move in with his brother, Jax. Jax, the MMC, is the hot guy from the bar! What Maddie doesn't know is that Jax is also the firefighter who saved her.
Luke is a loser (at least for now). He decides to take a job hours away in the mountains for 3 months leaving Maddie and Jax to live together. Before leaving, Maddie catches him cheating on her and they break up.

For the next three months we're blessed with multiple spicy scenes that include a variety of kinks including praise, cuffs and toys, dominance, edging and more. Definitely some toe curling! Bonus that the spicy scenes weren't over the top ridiculous.

Looking forward to reading Luke's story next.

4.5 ⭐️ 3.5 🌶

🚒 Ex's Older brother
🚒 Small town
🚒 Age gap
🚒 Possessive MMC
🚒 Secret pining

This book had me hooked from the first page - it was funny, angsty, emotional, swoony and balanced out with a delicious helping of spice.

Jax (MMC) is a volunteer firefighter who is strong and possessive, and has been pining after his brother's girlfriend for 4 years - after their paths crossed at a bar one night before Maddie (FMC) met Jax's brother. Their chemistry was strong and undeniable that night, but Jax did not realise that Maddie was only 19 at the time while he was about to turn 30. Jax decided he would pursue Maddie after she turned 20.....but as life would have it, his younger brother met her just before she turned 20, and they started a relationship, while Jax pined from afar, putting his brother's happiness first.

What follows is a beautifully written story filled with all the feels.
The side characters of Andrew, Paige and Mary fill the story with banter and humour, and I cannot wait to hopefully see more of them in coming books.

This book is highly recommended if you are after a new book boyfriend who is just so freaking swoony, protective, possessive, and has a bit of a dirty mouth. :)

His Secret Obsession was such a fantastic read. It had a little bit of everything, some tense drama, mental health representation, sweet moments and great spice.
It starts with Maddie's boyfriend Luke telling her that they have an eviction notice and he calls his brother to see if they can stay with him. Maddie and Jax don't get along at all. We find out because they almost hooked up 4 years ago before she met Luke. Jax stopped when he realized she was 19 and he's 10 years older. Maddie and Luke's relationship has been falling apart and the break up before he leaves for three months for a resort job. Maddie and Jax try to keep denying their feelings but give in. They decide it's just for the 3 months Luke is gone, Jax doesn't want to hurt his brother. We see Maddie grow as a person, she reveals her panic attacks over her parents' car accident and Jax helps her through them. Jax and Maddie start falling for each other but don't want to admit it. What will happen when Luke comes home? Can they make it work?

This novel is a captivating mix of romance and intensity that draws readers in from the start. Her impressive writing showcases a rich narrative filled with both spice and depth. The chemistry between Jax and Maddie keeps the story engaging, as their journey explores love and desire.

The plot is well-structured, balancing spicy moments with a compelling storyline that resonates emotionally. The ending leaves readers eager for more, especially with the intriguing introduction of Luke and hints about the sequel.

Overall, this book is an impressive debut that highlights Vanauken’s talent for creating engaging characters and gripping plots. It’s a must-read for romance fans, and I eagerly await what’s next!

I highly, highly recommend this book! Did it have me crying - yes. Did it have me laughing out loud - yes. Did it give me all the emotions, including anger at a certain person ? Also, yes!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
🌶🌶🌶.5 - (Dark romance has ruined romance for me when it comes to spice, Old me would have said 5/5)

To say I fell in love with Jax in his very first chapter is an understatement. He is dreamy, kind, protective, and just an all-around great guy.

SIDE NOTE - I LOVE Mary and Andrew as side characters!

Back to Jax and Maddie - I love the banter between them, the cuteness, the jealousy (the restaurant and office scenes IYKYK)

I can't wait to read the rest of this series and thank you, Nicole, for letting me read this in advance.
