Joan Chittister, a Benedictine nun, is one of the most popular and prophetic religious voices in the world today. In her many books and countless speeches, she has addressed the burning social issues of our time justice, peace, the role of women, and the survival of the planet. She has explored the deepest questions of human existence, including love, suffering and death, the quest for happiness, and the meaning of life. She has probed the word of God, the message of the gospel, the call to contemplation, and the challenge of faithful living. To all of these she has brought her characteristic courage, honesty, and above all, passion. This volume, more than any other, captures and distills her spirit and her message for women and men today including reflections on her own journey, why she remains in the church, and what sustains her faith and hope."
Whether you are familiar with Sister Joan’s writings or are meeting her for the first time, this is a book that will inspire you. Sister Joan has a voice that is both practical and philosophical, uplifting and challenging. My complete review of Joan Chittister: Essential Writings is published on my blog, light to read by.
I loved these essential writings by Sister Joan Chittister. They covered many topics. I admire Sister Joan's commitment to ensuring all people, men and women alike, are heard, seen, and able to bring about the kingdom of God using their God-give talents. We are not there yet. But we should never give up hope.
Very good, even if it does only skim the surface of Chittister's theology and politics. I felt like I dog-eared every other page of this one. It seems like everything Chittister writes is quotable. Such a deep understanding of the scripture and such a big heart.
The author has an amazing perspective that she has been promoting for years. It's terrible that men in power in the church have not taken her perspective to heart.
