She quit drinking the day her mother died. Now she has to stay sober long enough to prove it wasn’t an accident.
Former detective Harper Adams is only days into sobriety when she realizes her mother’s car accident wasn’t an accident at all. The faded skid marks on the bridge. The drugs in her tox screen. The packed suitcase in the trunk, for a trip her homebody mother never mentioned. Something sinister happened—and Harper is determined to uncover the truth. To do that, she accepts the assistance of the last man she should trust: James Malcolm, a crime boss with a shadowy past. He insists he’s only trying to help. Harper isn’t sure whether his offer is about justice or something else entirely, but she decides it’s safer to work with the devil you know. Malcolm gets results—and results are what she needs. As Harper digs deeper, she unearths secrets powerful people want to keep buried. And the closer she gets to the truth, the more dangerous it becomes.
Staying sober is hard. Facing what really happened to her mother might destroy her.
Bloodyhell!! That ending sent me spiraling!! What am I supposed to do now. Okay, I’m patiently waiting for the bonus scene and I know after reading that I will want more. The third installment in the Harper Adams series is a book I have been patiently waiting on and it did not disappoint. It was such an addicting read. I wanted to savor every second of it. I especially loved seeing a different side of James. Harper is finally working through her addiction and recovery. My heart goes out to her but I’m happy to see that she’s starting to see the light. Harper has come a long way with her past grief and well it’s a lot of baggage that she needs to work through on her own. I really enjoyed seeing her in action and work her mother’s case alongside James. These two have become reluctant allies and I’m here for it. I have enjoyed seeing more of James in this series. I cannot wait for what’s to come next. I’m on the edge of my seat with anticipation for what’s to come! This can be read as a stand-alone, the author does a great job and gives out relevant information as needed to get you up to speed. But I’d still say circle back to the beginning. Just read the bonus scene. Eeekk!! So freakin good. 🥵
A very special thanks to the author for the gifted arc.
OMG what a rollercoaster ride! Just finished reading and my heart rate is so high, my emotions are racing at what just happened. It was so good! It was really worth the waiting to meet Harper and James again. I’ve been holding my breath and hoping for some growth in Harper and James’s life and especially with quite a difficult relationship between them. What I got is surpassing my expectations. I loved the quirky bantering between Harper and James. It was a great relief that Harper acknowledged her problems and to see much more of James as a person. Team James forever! Denise Grover Swank did it again! I loved and devoured this full length novel in two days and it still feels like it was short (384 pages isn’t short) and I need more of it. The struggle is real though to wait for the next book and keep guessing what’s coming next.
Luck of the Devil is the third installment in the Harper Adams Mystery series. In the previous book, we learned that Harper's mother had died in a car accident. Harper realized she was drinking too much and decided to quit cold turkey. She teams up with James Malcolm, a former crime boss, to investigate. With his connections and her investigative skills, they start to unearth the truth - which turns Harper's world upside down while she's detoxing.
I love that this series keeps getting better and better! I have solidly been #TeamJames since the Rose Gardner series and was so happy he returned to Denise's writing. I am incredibly pleased that Harper realized she had a drinking problem and is trying to overcome it and that James is helping her. Harper is both an incredibly flawed character and very strong - her background in law enforcement makes her much more comfortable with danger and protecting herself. I really enjoyed the banter between Harper and James and both of them learning to open up and trust each other to share more of their personal histories. Also, that bonus scene can not be missed!
Wow.wow.wow! This is by far the best book yet in this series. I am always in awe of Denise’s heroines, but Harper Adams is unlike any others. She is flawed and struggling with so many emotions-yet she has so much strength and no matter the obstacles she faces- she is determined to find the answers she seeks. In Luck of the Devil, Harper teams up again with James Malcom in her quest for answers. I loved their dialogue and how these two work together. I truly didn’t want the story to end and I am eager for more from this series! This is the third book in the Harper Adams Series, I definitely recommend reading this series in order. Thank you to the author for the opportunity to read an early copy, all thoughts are my own.
Holy moly! What a book. Just when you think you have it figured out, hold on because it’s gonna surprise you. The storyline is a rollercoaster of emotions. I did not want to put it down. I love the character development of both Harper and James. Speaking of James.. i mean the man is making changes and Im here for it 💜👏🏻👏🏻
I have read all of Denise Grover Swank’s books and I usually give high praise as she is such a great writer. This time though, I was almost speachless when I finished the book. I was reeling from the story, the characters, the relationship developements… it has actually taken me lika a week to get my review written.
This is the third book about Harper Adams and she is a bit darker than previous main characters of DGS. She has an obvious drinking problem but is denying it until she slowly comes to accept it and meet the challenge with a headstrong and almost self defiant persistance. This actually says a lot of Harpers personality. And speaking of personalities, this series reintroduces James Malcolm to us, a complex but (from a reader point of view) much beloved character from the Rose Gardener series. I was #teamjames for Rose’s behalf and I mourned how he ended up in that series, but I see things clearer now. I must say that I like to see Malcolm through Harper’s eyes even more than through Rose’s, but I also have a head start to Harper in figuring out Malcolm as I know his back story.
This is a Murder mystery, not a romance, but there is something brewing…
Their tentative connection, how the trust grows so slow but it grows. How they comes to see how alike they are. DGS writes excellent characters! Add to that the mystery and you have yourself a page turner that will stay with you for a long time.
For the best reading experience you should start with part one: Little girl vanished.
I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
All the 5 stars. Harper faces many demons and accepts her "changes" in a powerful ending. I adore the Harper/James combo and hope the series is long running. The bonus scene at the end was....everything. As hot as anything in the original Rose series (both of them). We have a new power couple here to seek justice and I'm all here for it.
I have no idea what these changes will mean with her friend like Louise, am suspicious and curious on more being uncovered on her own police team. Deveareaux gets in his phone call - always loved him too - not sure if he's done with the series or not. Can't he have his own side series sometime, please? He cannot embrace the darkness I adore but I always adored him so it works.
The mystery is a nifty one as she's digging trhough trench waters close to home with the loss of loved one; even so, she gets some heartfelt moments in with long lost family, so many secrets exposed. Her father - well, he's not on the straight and narrow but I have a strange hope of kinds that will work out for them somehow someway. I do think he has her best interest at heart to a degree although he has laid the mess of a bed they've laid in, including the rest of her family. Ah, consequences, don't they bite?
I purposely read this over days to make it last, although it's certainly good enough to read in one sitting. Was hard to put down. Already pre-ordered the next.
I have loved James Malcolm from the moment I laid eyes on him when I met him in the Rose Gardner series. (To get to know him better, you definitely need to pick up that series!) Reading him now makes me want to shout “I told you so!” to all the naysayers who wouldn’t believe that he could ever be redeemed. I am loving how his connection with Harper is evolving.
Talk about evolving, Harper is truly growing by facing her truth. I love how vulnerable she becomes in order to accept her struggles and works to overcome them.
Together they work to find out the truth behind her mother’s “accident”. In true form, Denise had me on the edge of my seat completely riveted! Let me just say, the literal gasp that left my body at that ending truly sent me over the edge! I was legit mind blown and the entire emotional rollercoaster was a wild ride.
Although the author does a phenomenal job with this thrilling mystery and it can totally be read as a standalone, I highly recommend reading the first two books because they’re so good and you will absolutely want to go on this journey with Harper and James from the very beginning.
Yay! Things are starting to look up! Harper is working on her Alcohol problem and is FINALLY seeing James beyond his reputation. There is wonderful forward movement in both those areas that make this book a delight to read. The mystery side was not quite as gripping and ended up being pretty cookie cutter with nothing really changing. We are left at the end with very little new information on who is pulling the strings, just a lot of threads slowly working themselves together bit by bit.
OMG what a book. Could not put it down to the detriment of everything. When Harper and James team up again sparks fly but will others put out the flame. Kept you guessing as to where the puzzle pieces would fall. Can't wait until January for book 4.
I am absolutely loving Denise Grover Swank. I went from reading 30-40 books a month to no books in the last three months. I have always loved DGS and decided to read Luck of the Devil and read it in 24 hours. I love Harper and James. I can't wait for the next book.

I enjoyed this book, but I wanted to like it more than I did. It felt like filler. Below are some of the issues I had with it.
Post script: my issues below probably sound more negative than I mean them to. I discovered DSG’s books a year or two ago and have been impressed by her writing, especially as (I think?) she’s mostly self-published. She creates interesting characters and compelling, complex plots. I particularly like the Carly Moore series, which sets a Tudor dynasty’s worth of betrayal, heartbreak, and intrigue in a small, rural Tennessee town. I liked Luck of the Devil, but I like her other books better.
Spoilers ahead:
* The book spends too much time in Harper’s head, thinking about how hot Malcolm is, in lieu of developing chemistry between the two characters. I don’t buy their romance. This was surprising to me, since I think DSG did a terrific job making the case for Rose and James in the Rose Gardner series and for Carly and Marco in the Carly Moore series. In particular, I found Harper’s internal monologue repetitive. Maybe without it, her interactions with James would have stood out more.
* It spends too much time rehashing characters and plot points from DSG’s Rose Gardner series. For example, did James really have to summarize his whole relationship with Neely Kate? It also isn’t consistent with his character. I appreciate that DSG is filling out Harper’s perception of him, but I wish she would do it some other way than by having him retell events from her other series.
* It’s short on plot. Harper’s mother died mysteriously towards the end of book #2. In this book, Harper visits her grandparents, finds papers in a safe deposit box her mother left her, and has a shootout with an assembly line of faceless bad guys we don’t know anything about, before finally learning who killed her mother. The whole book takes place over what, 2 1/2 days? There’s very little detective work; most of the “clues” are handed or explained to her by her aunt and James. I’m curious to find out what happens next, but it didn’t feel like a whole lot happened in this book.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I thought the Harper Adams series would be three books but now there's a fourth. I'm not opposed to this, just surprised. I'm also bemused that the bonus content wasn't just another chapter. It was very difficult to read on my Kindle. It kept jumping down and I'd lose my place. It also was VERY faint type face. SPOILER: I'm honestly not sure how I feel about Harper and James.
Luck of the Devil is the third installment in the Harper Adams Mystery series. Like the first two books, it offers a compelling mix of suspense and emotion, making it difficult to put down.
Despite her flaws, former detective Harper Adams is a protagonist readers can't help but root for. In this installment, she struggles with her sobriety after her mother's suspicious death. The reader embarks on a tense, thrilling journey filled with determination, grief, and danger. Harper's relentless pursuit of the truth, regardless of the potential cost, adds depth and complexity to her character, making her journey both intriguing and engaging. The scene is shrouded in suspicion, featuring faded skid marks, a packed suitcase, and a toxicology report that doesn't add up. This mystery series is truly addictive.
The chemistry between Harper and Malcolm, a crime boss turned tavern owner whom she reluctantly trusts, is magnetic. Their dynamic is electrifying and complex; he acts as her protector while also being a wildcard, and she confronts her inner turmoil with unwavering determination. I loved their dialogue and the interactions between these two characters, and I can't wait to see where their story leads in future books in the series.
If you love a mystery with a flawed complicated but interesting protagonist, slow burn romance, with twists and turns to solve a mystery, you are going to fall in love with this series.
Reasons for my five-star rating of this book...
Harper experiences profound emotional depth and growth as she navigates her sobriety following the suspicious death of her mother.
The unforgettable slow-burn dynamic between Harper and Malcolm.
The characters are authentic; they are flawed yet very interesting, making it impossible for the reader not to root for them.
A true page-turner, this book was difficult to put down once I started reading it.
Harper and Malcolm navigate the twists and turns of the mystery surrounding Harper's mother's death, all while uncovering the true nature of their relationship.
This latest installment of Harper Adams complicated messy life was another twisty, could not put it down story. And oh does it pack an emotional punch - expect to feel all the things. Harper is a disgraced ex-detective who has moved back to her small hometown to start her new life as a PI. She’s trying to move past the shooting she was involved in and has just accepted that she is drinking too much. The book picks up right after the last book ends, Harper has wrapped up her last missing person’s case and then learns of her mother’s death. Harper’s emotional pain is frequently palpable as she follows the clues and unravels the past as she tries to stay sober while attempting to solve the mystery of her mother’s suspicious car accident. Once again she teams up with James Malcolm, a local bar owner and former crime boss. I love that Harper is not a white knight kind of protagonist, she has all kinds of gray mixed in with her goodness which makes her more likable and relatable. She is definitely a bruised but not broken character. One of this author’s greatest strengths is in creating three dimensional characters who are neither all good nor all bad but nevertheless are real, relatable, and likeable. Harper and James are two such characters. And both of them are doing some major baggage unpacking with this story as their trust and relationship deepens. The book was well written and included witty dialogue, three dimensional characters, and an engaging storyline as shown through sweet moments, exciting action, danger, family drama, painful pasts, mystery, plot twists, imperfect characters, secrets, missteps, laughs, and all the big feels. I can’t wait to read more of Harper’s investigations. 4.5 stars.
The main character, Harper Adams, has a complicated past. Book three in the series opens with Harper attending her mother’s funeral—and coming to terms with the truth that her mother was murdered, not killed in a tragic accident. She teams up with James Malcolm (who has an equally tangled history) to uncover who’s behind it. Along the way, Harper learns that her own father may have played a role in her mother’s death. We soon discover that he, an attorney, once did legal work for the Hardshaw Group—a powerful and dangerous organization involved in shady dealings they’ll kill to keep hidden.
Let me just say, I love the characters in this series. They’re layered, complex, and written with incredible depth and vulnerability. Harper is a total badass, yet Denise Grover Swank writes her with such emotional honesty and struggle that she feels completely real. I love the chemistry between Harper and James? Is there romance brewing? I sure hope so!
Denise keeps you guessing in this novel, and I’m 100% rooting for Harper and her allies to get some vigilante justice. Winter 2026—when the next book releases—can’t come fast enough!
If you're a long time follower/reader you know that she hasn't had the easiest time over the last couple years including some writers block. Well let me just say, she is back and better than ever!!
I literally devoured this book. You can see how much Denise used some of her feelings and experiences to help write as Harper. Yes, I know this isn't the first time we've seen Harper, but I easily feel like this is the best book out of the 3 so far.
**Do not read this as a standalone.** You must read the first 2 Harper books or else this one won't make sense as it literally picks up where the 2nd book ends. You do not have to have read the Rose Gardner series though. But she ties in just enough breadcrumbs from the Rose world that you'll definitely wanna go back and read all those books if you haven't already.
I laughed...I gasped...I fell even more in love with James than I already was. Seriously Denise, you knocked this book out of the park. #TeamJamesForever
Luck Of The Devi, book three in The Harper Adam’s series, was impossible to put down. Not only is Harper attempting to stop drinking; she is also investigating her mother’s “suicide”. Her mother’s recent behavior, the accident scene, the mysterious eyewitness and drugs in her mother’s system are not adding up to the mother she known all of her life. There is a new will where Harper is left some items, but unless she asks the right person the right question Harper would never discovered any information. Durning her quest, Harper learns her mother has orchestrated a life built on lies, secrets and guilt. Harper faces heartbreaking and treacherous situations! Finding the truth hasn’t guaranteed the answers and peace Harper is seeking. Instead Harper has stumbled upon an extremely dangerous enemy. Denise has once again woven an intense story filled with danger, personal risks and intrigue. This book is Denise at her best!.
I received an advance copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
If Denise Grover Swank writes it, I’m reading it...and we all know my heart belongs to James Malcolm 😍. Luck of the Devil drops us right back into Harper Adams’ stormy world, picking up where that soul-crushing cliffhanger in book two left us, Harper’s mom? Dead in a car accident. Or… was it?
We open with Harper at her mother’s funeral, only for James to saunter in later after the funeral (like the dangerous heartthrob he is) and drop a truth bomb: things aren’t adding up. Skid marks, sketchy tox screens, a suitcase her mom packed but with key items missing, suspicious much? Harper thinks it’s her fault. James thinks her dad is the problem. Either way, the game is on.
Their investigation rips open more family secrets than Harper bargained for, including grandparents and an aunt who’ve been missing from her life for years. But the deeper they dig, the more it smells like a ghost from James Malcolm’s own shady past, JR Simmons or his successor, might be calling the shots. And then? Boom. Cliffhanger. A vicious one. If book two’s ending left us hanging, this one yanks the rug, flips the table, and leaves us screaming at the last page and swooning just a bit.
I swore I’d pace myself, savor the slow burn, but once this plot hit a certain point, I was gone...eyes glued to the page, pulse racing, caffeine forgotten. The Harper Adams series weaving in Rose Gardner Mystery/Investigation vibes? Pure bliss for DGS fans.
Luck of the Devil is the 3rd book in the Harper Adams series and I loved it so much! This book picks up where the 2nd book left off, so the first two books in this series are a must read. Harper is investigating her mother's accident and that is a rollercoaster of emotions. The mystery in this book is engaging, thrilling, and intriguing. I'm excited to see some characters that are initially mentioned in the Rose Gardner series. While it's not required to read that series, I definitely recommend it because of the characters that tie back to it, and also because it's another amazing series from Denise.
James is one of my favorite characters from the Rose Gardner series, so I am glad that he is a major part of this book. I also love the growth and relatability of Harper throughout this series. I appreciate seeing the vulnerability of both Harper and James in this book and I can't wait to see how things evolve with both of them. I am impatiently waiting for the next book since we were left on a such an pivotal cliffhanger.
Holy. Moly. This one deserves all the stars. Are you ready for suspense? Are you ready for blasts from the past? With cameos from some of your favorite Rose Gardner characters? Are you ready for some romance? Some anticipation?
Because - This. One. Has. It. All. And then some!
This is the type of story that made me fall in love with DGS’ writing to begin with. She refreshes you in a way that’s not rehashing the entire previous book but reminds you of where things left off.
Harper Adams’ is looking into the death of her mother. She ends up looking a little closer than she originally anticipated of potential suspects. James is there every step of the way to help her through this very personal case. Albeit he does have his own reasons for wanting to be on this case.
I seriously loved every single aspect of this book. And I can’t wait until the next book comes out. This series is seriously phenomenal. Don’t wait for this series to be complete to buy this book. You’ll want to dive in right away.
I did not want to put this book down and didn’t. From page one, I was completely invested in the story and the characters. Denise has a way of pulling you into the scene—every emotion, every twist, every piece of Harper's journey felt so real, like I was right there beside her.
Seeing Harper truly commit to sobriety and allow James to help her was powerful and emotional. While I wasn’t exactly Team James in the Rose series (iykyk), I absolutely am in this one. His dynamic with Harper is complex, layered, and unexpectedly compelling.
The story picks up shortly after book two and takes off like a bullet. You can feel Harper’s grief, guilt, and determination as she navigates the mystery behind her mother’s death. It’s a rollercoaster ride, equal parts suspenseful and emotional, that kept me turning pages long into the night.
You need to read the first two books in the series to fully appreciate the depth of the characters and the stakes at play. This installment builds beautifully on what came before and raises everything to a whole new level.
This book is raw, intense, and more than worth the wait. Denise delivers a gripping continuation that will leave you desperate for the next chapter in Harper’s story.
I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
The last year has been difficult for Denise Grover Swank, and it also came with a lot of self doubt. Reading the most recent Harper Adams only confirms that she definitely hasn’t lost her flair!
All through the book, which picks up a few days after the massive hook the previous one left us with, we are treated to a maelstrom of twists and turns and action that keeps us glued to the pages, but there is also some deeply emotional moments, Harper’s fight against her addiction… and James Malcolm, of course!
In fact, discovering more about the former crime boss is another aspect that is more than worth its price in gold, especially if, like me, you have developed a (huge!!) book crush on the tavern owner.
A great mystery book! And don’t forget to check out the bonus scene when you’re finished. It’s well worth it!
Amazing as usual! DHS is one of my all-time favorite writers. Her writing talent is limitless. I read this book with mixed feelings. I absolutely was obsessed with the Rose Gardner books and was heartbroken. James and Rose did not end up together. I am still not over it. I've always been team James and always will be. I'm mad at Rose. I am happy for James, but I was still hoping he and Rose would get back together, but it's time something good happens for him. He and Harper make a good team, and I like her. This is also another complicated ongoing plot that takes hold of you, and you need more. Harper's story is a lot on it's own as she battles a drinking problem and the end of her career. She's too good at being a detective to leave it altogether, so becoming a PI is the next best thing. I hope there is a lot more to come.
I knew going into the book that I was going to love it. Book 3 in the Harper Adams Mystery series has been long anticipated, and it was so worth the wait! Harper was fighting her own personal demons when her mother died. The town is saying she drove off a bridge, but did she, or was she murdered? And who did it? James is there to help her get answers. If you are a fan of Denise Grover Swank's Rose Gardner series, you are familiar with James Malcom/Skeeter. This series and book in particular show a whole other side of him that I love.
Five stars all the way! I highly recommend this one. You can read this as a standalone but there is a lot of backstory, so I would recommend at least reading the Harper Adams books 1 & 2 first.
I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Yet again, Denise Grover Swank knocks it out of the park with her Harper Adams' series. This time, she gets a little more personal with the fact that the crime Harper is investigating is the death, and possible murder, of her own mother. Again, she teams up with James Malcolm to look into all of the interesting facts that just don't seem to add up. Things like the way her dad has been treating her, the way the tire marks don't look like they happened on purpose, and the way her mom had bags packed when everything happened.
Throughout it all we can see the friendship/relationship between Harper and James developing. This was great writing, but I selfishly don't want them to be friendly because I'm still holding out hope for Rose. LOL.
I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I could not read the book, or come write this review, fast enough! And I cannot recommend Luck of the Devil hard enough!
It is a fantastic story with real life, mature, emotions. Thrill and adventure. Slow burn. A variety of complex characters. And even a little humor. I really enjoyed the action sequence because it was so different from many I have read before, but it wasn’t far-fetched. And who doesn’t love a bada$$ heroine!!
It’s recommended to read the previous two Harper Adams books to really appreciate the plot, but you can honestly just pick up this one and devour it in a day.
And for Rose Gardner series fans, specifically Team James, you will adore him in this one. He’s everything we loved and thought he was capable of being and more!
I've been waiting so long, but it was totally worth the wait. It was a little longer wait for Harper to return, but it was so worth it.
What a rollercoaster ride of suspense and emotions. Seeing Harper and Skeeter get close and develop in their friendship even through all the danger and death is exactly what I was hoping for.
They both have pasts that are unsettling and danger lurks in unsuspecting places. I loved how they came together to solve a murder and stay alive along the way.
I can't wait to see what happens next. If you've read Denise before, you know how amazing it is. If you haven't read her, you are missing out. Don't wait another minute!.
