This is book 6 in the Spellbound Bookshop paranormal cozy mystery series by USA TODAY Bestselling Author J.A. Whiting.

It’s the end of October in the seacoast town of Hamlet, Massachusetts and Shelby Price is happy that the last mysterious case she worked on is over. She is decorating her bookshop for Halloween when she learns that a professor and historian has died from a fall down the stairs at the Harris Estate, an historical museum and event space on the outskirts of town.

Almost a year ago, Shelby fell off a ladder and hit her head and when she woke up, she could hear her cat Harper talking to her. Not only could she converse with the feline, but she started to develop some paranormal powers. Although shocked and frightened by what was happening, Shelby came to accept her new skills.

Now, Shelby and Harper have the feeling that the professor didn’t die from falling down the staircase. They believe the woman was murdered and the key to the death is hidden in the history of the estate. With the help of her friend Lucy, psychic shop owner Fiona, Elias the shaman, her boyfriend Travis the town detective, and her paranormal skills, can Shelby figure out the secret before someone else is killed?

This story has some mild paranormal elements.

A thoroughly enjoyable mystery.

I've read all six books and each got better than the previous. J. A. W. You out did yourself. The books descriptions of events and emotions were poetic. Even the every day breaks in the mystery were a welcome respite to the tensions. The budding romance between Shelby and Travis held the necessary spark. The mystic and paranormal situations held the bonding of old friends and new to new heights.
I recognized some repeated events and dialog from previous books, not just reminders of events. (A short cut in writing?)
The Halloween season made for spooky reading.. It fit the story perfectly and kept me on the edge of my seat. I had difficulty getting anything except reading done!
I like these characters and especially Harper. I didn't understand her less than cat-like dialogue many times but it is quite clear now.
Bring us more mysterious adventures, please.

A 330 Year Old Mystery Solved Along With A Current-Day Murder!

"Shadows and Shamans" is Book 6 of A Spellbound Bookshop Mystery, written by J. A. Whiting. This episode has Shelby, Harper, Lucy, and Travis solving the current day murder of a historical researcher, Jane McAllister, as well as solving the 330 year old mystery of whatever happened to Prudence Harris during the 1690s. Are the ghost tours at the Harris estate correct? Or are the just a bunch of lies? With Shelby, her cat, her friends, as well as a psychic and a couple of intuitive shamans on the two cases, both recent a past ghosts will finally rest peacefully. I gave this book 5 stars and look forward to the next one in the series.

This seemed to be a case that really brought Shelby and Travis even closer together. Maybe soon she’ll feel like she can tell him about being able to hear her cat’s voice in her head, but for now she just relays what Harper says as her own thoughts. This was a nice combo of a past mystery that a friend of the entire town’s was trying to piece together when she was killed.

Shelby couldn’t stand for the friend and the woman from long ago not to have justice, so she pushed on with investigating and came face to face with the killer who definitely didn’t want any secrets to get out. But Shelby’s friends along with some awesome new friends intervened so justice was found for two people that night.

the truth will set them free

This story touches on the hysteria of the time when women who could read, show any intelligence etc. They were automatically assumed to be witches, since women couldn’t possibly be that intelligent. They made it impossible for their families to defend or help in any way without them suffering the consequences. Regrettably, even today, people still fear what they don’t understand.

Mystery solved

Again, JA does not disappoint. Shelby and company are preparing for Halloween when a friend is killed. The research the friend was working on could change things at the Harris estate forever. Shelby is drawn to solve not only the friend's death but that of Prudence Harris as well. Thanks for writing such great stories and I can't wait for the next one.
