A nice blend of historical intrigue and modern-day mystery
“Cascade Target: The Lost Railway” transported me to the stunning setting of the Rockies. The story begins in 1910 with a mountain train caught in an avalanche. A hidden treasure left behind by a notorious thief, William Corbyn, sets the stage for a quest for wealth for the next generations.
The vivid mountain scenery makes for an enjoyable read. I live in Canada, and I travelled in the Rockies myself, so the story brought me back to familiar places. Another side of the story that I loved is engaging characters – journalist Erik Wiedner and biologist Amelia Thompson make a great couple. I love the way they teamed up after they both became the witnesses of the murder in the Rockies.
Even though the story is well-written, the author's tendency to tell how the characters felt about their actions rather than show it was a bit distracting. Despite this flaw, the story's suspenseful plot and well-developed characters kept me invested in the unfolding mystery.
Overall, “Cascade Target: The Lost Railway” is a thrilling and atmospheric mystery that will appeal to fans of historical fiction and suspense.
Cascade Target was an entertaining read. It starts with a man, Corbyn, on a train in 1910, journeying through the Rocky Mountains. Red-badged Jamestown Detectives, who are relentless, are pursuing him. The descriptive writing about the train, icy mountains, avalanches, and the rough wilderness of the Cascades is well done. That was all in the first chapter. The book takes off from there.
The story features an array of connected characters. The locations include a train tunnel in the Cascades, Edmonton, Hamburg, Seattle, the Canadian Rockies, and Montana.
Erick and Amelia are on the run because they know a secret based on Corbyn’s mysterious letter about a document and hidden treasure. The pursuer is relentless, but Erick and Amelia keep outwitting him with help along the way.
My favorite line from the book is, “Legend has it he concealed something in one of the local tunnels over a hundred years ago.” That is what the story revolves around. This novel reminded me of Nancy Drew mysteries from my youth, only this is for grown-ups. It’s highly entertaining and refreshing, like an old-fashioned mystery. This book gave me a new appreciation for old locomotives and life in the Cascade Mountains. Who doesn’t love a train whistle? I highly recommend this book and look forward to Book 2.
The prologue of Cascade Target: The Lost Railway, set in 1910, introduces us to William Corbyn, a man who has a dark secret yet wishes to be honorable. Fast forward to the present, we meet his great-grandson, Orson Corbyn, a somewhat paranoid mobster on a quest to uncover the family’s hidden treasure. This unique blend of historical intrigue and modern-day mystery sets the stage for a thrilling adventure.
As the story unfolds, we see how the characters evolve and adapt to their circumstances, making them more relatable and engaging for the reader. Corbyn’s paranoia drives the gangster to decide the person on the slow-passing train has seen too much and is somehow after his treasure. An investigative journalist seeking residence in Canada is on holiday with his Canadian girlfriend when he witnessed a burly man in a leather coat commit... something. Not sure if he saw a crime or argument, the lovers debated contacting authorities.
Cascade Target: The Lost Railway is an adventure, with the tension mounting as the couple on holiday finds themselves embroiled in a dangerous game of cat and mouse. The decision to seek help is quickly made for them when they see the man in the leather coat boarding their train at the next stop. The story is a gamble with twists and turns of a couple on holiday who discover their harmony to think strategically, overcome obstacles, and act in unison, which keeps them alive over thousands of miles, regardless of the dangers.
Eriksen's vivid descriptions of the land and mountains will immerse you in the book's setting, leaving no doubt of his appreciation for the beauty of nature.
Cascade Target: The Lost Railway has a long "prologue" about the ancestors (Willaim Corbyn and Emma) of the main villain character (Orson Corbyn) in the story. William is on the run from a bank heist, and an avalanche along the train route detours his path for a bit, allowing his to hide his loot, meet Emma, and settle into a nearby town under the radar until he saves someone important from a fire. Eventually William and Emma get together and decide not to use his "blood money" for their future, thus foreshadowing that the bank robbery loot will have negative impacts on those that pursue it, which is the case for William's descendant Orson. The "prologue" section all takes place in 1910. The two main characters (Erik and Amelia) encounter Orson in in present day.
I'd recommend this book to people who enjoy a good heist/action story with historical elements. There are mysteries behind each character, like the "hidden side" of Erik that is connected to his past. There are training fights, chase scenes, and gangsters with plenty of action. Makes for a fun read.

As someone who loves exploring the Pacific Northwest, this book was right up my alley. "Cascade Target" combines everything I enjoy - historic railways, mountain mysteries, and high-stakes treasure hunting in familiar territory
