Working from home with her best friend Jack down the hall, Viviana Cantwell leads a comfortable life, yet she can’t ignore the low hum of anxiety and whispers of You’re in your 30s now. When a gorgeous, arrogant publishing executive comes to town with his wealthy, charming friend, Viviana sees the answer to all her problems. She can date her dream man and embark upon her dream a novel featuring her very own Mr. Darcy should write itself, right?

Plagued with confusing feelings about Jack, heaps of self-doubt, and constantly flawed assumptions about everyone, she clings to the one thing that’s always been right in her life, her friendship with Jack—she can’t risk losing him too.
This sweet romance, loosely based on Jane Austen's works, has no explicit scenes but does have light swearing and adult themes.
Alana Highbury is the author of the Austen Inspired series, along with several holiday romances: Meet Me on Christmas Eve, Snowed In on Valentine's Day, and Dance with Me on New Year's Eve. Her novels blend rom-com, contemporary romance, and women’s fiction. When she’s not writing, you can find her reading, playing board games, cross stitching, or hanging out with her family, which includes a writerly husband and children, two beautiful, lazy cats, and a feisty cockatiel. With master’s and bachelor’s degrees in English, Alana has worked in professional writing and editing roles for two decades, but she’s been an avid fan of romance fiction even longer.
Any fan of Jane Austen will want to jump right in.
The heroine Viviana (great name) is in love with all things Austen. Every man will be measured to Mr. Darcy both Firth and MacFadyen. While trying to write a novel she finds herself comparing her new love interest and his best friend similar to all things Pride and Prejudice. Through the ups and downs of this story one thing is her somewhat constant, her best friend Jack. While Vivi is learning throughout this story that people and life aren’t always as perfect as a great Austen novel. She learns she can count on love of family and true friends to set her life right.
I was lucky to be one a chosen few to read this book early. It was a refreshing “closed door” story that was everything a girl could want in a swoon worthy story. This book hasn’t even been released yet and I’m already wanting book two.
This was a good contemporary romance with some comedic moments to keep it a little lighter. There were complicated family dynamics and communication issues. Alana does a good job writing real life issues into her romance books. The main character often assumed the worst and refused to talk about difficult topics. Jack was the sweetest character and even he had trouble opening up about his personal life. I so wish Vivie had just seen what was right in front of her instead of trying to make Gregory her Mr. Darcy, but then we wouldn’t have a story. I was so happy to see her grow at the end of the story. It sounds like there will be another book about Vivie’s best friend Annie. She reminded me of another character from Alana’s love & holidays series, which is fun. I think I would’ve liked this more if I’d read Jane Austen first. I’ve only read regency romance Austen adaptations and liked those for the most part. I’m sure Austen fans are going to love this modern adaptation. This would be a good book to read around Valentine’s day.
Confession: I have never read a Jane Austen novel, nor have I watched any of the TV/movies. Anything I know about her stories has been learned through mentions of them in other romances. But I have to say, even with that minimal knowledge, I couldn't help but adore this book. Were there nods I likely missed? I'm sure. Would those who are as Austen obsessed as our FMC appreciate the story even more? Perhaps... but I quickly found myself drawn into this unique story just the same. Viviana is an Austen-obsessed aspiring novelist, so when her boss suggests that the grumpy new guy around the office might be her very own Mr. Darcy, she thinks it might just be the inspiration she needs for her story...but things don't turn out exactly how she expects. This was such cute concept and definitely quite different than I had anticipated going into the story. It was definitely a slow burn romance, but also gave some women's fiction vibes too... and I really enjoyed seeing Viviana's growth throughout the story as well. For Jane Austen fans (and non-fans as well), this is definitely one worth checking out. I look forward to seeing what comes next in the series.
Austen Inspired is a closed-door romance with kisses only. There is some minor language.
**ARC received for consideration. All opinions are my own.
4⭐️ This was very cute. While very much Austen inspired, it had its own strengths. I really enjoy how everything play out. I’m a sucker for friends to more. If you are looking for closed door romance, Emma/Pride and Prejudice vibes, and slow burn, read Austen Inspired now on KU.

"Turning pages, chasing dreams, and accidentally falling for her best friend-love never goes as planned!"
She's crafting her very own Mr. Darcy-until her heart starts writing a love story of its own.
I fell for this book from the beginning! As a huge Austen fan, I had expectations from the beginning and this was such a fun way to share some of Austen’s magic with readers today.
Viviana Cantwell lives a seemingly comfortable life, working from home with her best friend Jack just down the hall. But beneath the surface, there's a persistent hum of anxiety and self-doubt: You're in your 30s now-stuck in a soul-sucking job, still hopelessly single, living alone in a dreary, lifeless apartment. Everyone else -your parents, your sister-seems to have everything you don't. When will it be my turn to have it all?
When a dashing but arrogant publishing executive arrives in town with his charismatic and wealthy friend, Viviana thinks she's found the perfect solution. Dating her dream man while launching her dream career-a novel starring her very own Mr. Darcy-feels like the ideal plan. Surely, life will fall into place.
But when Jack, her loyal and easygoing best friend, starts stirring feelings she wasn't expecting, Viviana's carefully laid plans begin to unravel. She wasn’t expecting this-any of this, with Jack. How can she follow her heart without risking the one constant in her life: her friendship with Jack?
From moments of playful banter to training for a half-marathon together, Viviana and Jack's connection deepens in ways she never anticipated. Torn between her vision of the perfect romance and the messy, beautiful reality unfolding before her, Viviana must confront her own insecurities and decide what truly makes a happy ending.
Tropes * He falls first * Slow burn * Friends to lovers * Aspiring writer heroine * Austen-esque themes * Sweet romance with witty banter
A charming and heartfelt nod to Austen. Austen Inspired delivers all the sweetness, humor, and emotional depth of a modern-day love story. Jack lives up to our dreams of Mr. Darcy and leaves us wanting more!
Thank you to the author for an advanced readers copy. All opinions are my own.
I received an ARC from the author in return for an early and honest review.
A woman who is obsessed with Jane Austen’s books is told by her boss that the rude man she met just might be her Mr. Darcy to her Elizabeth from Pride and Prejudice. Stuck with that idea she tries to overlook the obvious with him in her fantasy until she overhears his conversation and reality crashes into her world throwing her into a tailspin!
Luckily her best friend forever is there along the way to confide in but interestingly enough she finally starts to see him in an entirely new light and could it be that he also looks at her the same way too?
I really enjoyed this book about Vivi and her love of Jane Austen books and picturing herself and her friends as the leading characters in the stories! She and her best girl friend meet two handsome men and are smitten by their good looks overlooking everything else that is obvious to everyone else. Through the ups and downs leading to a strained to the point of breaking friendship between them they finally “see the light” and patch up their friendship in the end.
This is a romantic comedy with some serious undertones that should make a person pause in the dating game when considering whether or not to date someone. Sometimes people change and sometimes they don’t so if something doesn’t feel right maybe it’s time to seriously take a look at that relationship!
I enjoyed this book because of the humanness of it all! I could see this happening in real life to people not just to characters in a story. I got caught up in the dynamics and drama of it and found it hard to put down!
I enthusiastically recommend this book as one I think everyone will enjoy with perhaps the exception of those who may be real life Gregory or Brandons!
There will be more in this series dealing with Vivi’s two friends that you’ll meet in this book and I’m looking forward to reading and enjoying their stories as well!
I urge you to get and read this book! Maybe it’ll make you become a Jane Austen fan as well!
“The kiss was everything that first kisses should be, but also everything that second and third kisses should be. It was every kiss combined into one amazing moment that I wanted to remember forever.”
-5 Stars-
Tropes: -Grumpy and sunshine -Love triangle -Friends to lovers -He falls first -Author/writer -She’s a bookie -He falls first (and hard)
Review… When Viviana, aka Vivi. Meets her bosses friend, Gregory she immediately starts playing Gregory and hers life out of there like it’s a Jane Austen movie. She desperately tries to win Gregory over, but after finally winning him over she find out the real ugly truth about him.
Added on top of that Jack, Vivi’s absolute best friend for years has started acting strange towards her, and when she finally finds out the cause of his behavior she has a hard decision to make.
I really loved this book! Like REALLY LOVED. The writing was amazing. I really like the way that the book is structured and how it follows a story in a story. It’s a cute and very unique idea.
The story itself is very readable and flows very nicely, I found myself reading 50 pages a day because I kept on getting wrapped up in the book… Haha. The chapters were quite short, nothing too short and nothing too long. It was just perfect for me, as a girl that craves short chapters!
When it comes to spice level, it’s perfect. nothing too spicy… A couple of kisses which weren’t overly graphic. The book had just the perfect amount of sizzle but no spice. The perfect balance to make you warm inside but nothing more.
I really loved Vivi and her funny personality. It was so relatable and super sweet and fun to get to see what she thinks, because I can totally relate.
The cover is also hella cute! I love the teak and it looks great on my shelf!
Overall, Alana’s Austen Inspired is truly a masterpiece of awesome writing and cute romance. Loved the book so much! :)
“I turned reluctantly, afraid to look at him, afraid he would see. He’d see all the love in my eyes, all the pain, the heartbreak.”
My thoughts: I thought this was a cute book and really enjoyed myself reading it! Gregory was infuriating, Jack was so dreamy, and Viviana went on quite a journey discovering herself! I have to admit, I have yet to actually read any Jane Austen novels, but this drives home the fact that I need to!!
If you like the following, read this! Romcom and women’s fiction Austen retellings Friends to lovers Slow burn Closed door
Thank you so much to the author for providing me with a copy of her book to read and review! It's always an honor to help support an indie author.
This book was about Vivi, a Jane Austen obsessed freelance editor who wants to write an Austen re-imagining book of her own. When an arrogant publishing executive comes to town, she decides he is her very own Mr. Darcy and decides that she will have her own Austen experience and use her life to inspire her book. But she can't quite figure out how Jack, her best friend, fits into her story.
Vivi was a bit of a difficult character for me to embrace at first. She lived in her head most of the time, and often saw what she wanted to see and ignored things that were staring her in the face. But honestly, as an introvert who lives inside my own head much of the time, I think I related to her more than I wanted to 😂 There were times I wanted to shake her and say "Vivi! Clearly your Mr. Darcy is a jerk, what are you doing??" But as the story progressed, it was nice to see her slowly figure things out and recognize that her life wasn't necessarily meant to play out the way she imagined it would. I did like the character of Jack a lot, although I would have liked more from him, and how he felt about Vivi and other things in his life. The two of them were very sweet together, and I smiled during their interactions.
If you are a fan of sweet, no spice romance, you should definitely pick this one up! And if you're a Jane Austen fan you will enjoy the fact that this isn't a re-telling, but a story of a woman who loves her so much that she wants to live as if she herself is one of Austen's characters.
The book is very well written but super slow. There are times when Viviana *thinks* she’s seeing hints of her best friend (Jack) liking her but in my opinion there was no indication that it was something other than them having their own lives and being busy. Also throughout most of the book, Viviana just kept to herself and didn’t really communicate with her friends and if she had then most of her turmoil could have been avoided, especially had she just talked to her ‘best friend’ Jack. I’m not familiar with Jane Austen so idk if Gregory is based off a character from one of her novels but I hated his character. I did really enjoy the ending but I hated that I had to get through almost 80% of the book for something good to happen. I will try more books by the author but I don’t think I’d continue the series. If you like Jane Austen books then this would be for you. If you’re not familiar with Austen, I’d suggest a different book by the author.
This book was very hard to put down. The amount of plot twist was insane and I loved it! The detail that went into describing the characters was so amazing and really made reading the book a great experience. It really pulled me in and it felt like I was living right there with Vivi. It’s so well written and such a creative story. There is a bit of language throughout. Truly an amazing romance book that I would defiantly read again. 10/10 recommend!
The start of the book had me doubting whether or not I would enjoy it, to be frank. It seemed forced and a little unbelievable. But here’s the thing, it’s GENIUS. Because once the plot line shifted I COULD NOT STOP READING. Well done! I related to Viv so much by the end that I sighed wistfully countless times lol anyway, the difference between the beginning and the end of the book is a PERFECT juxtaposition and I loved it.
What a refreshing story! A woman who adores Jane Austen’s books navigates her way through work and love interests alongside her best friend. She has several friends and family members but is she seeing everyone for what they really are? A loving story with great characters who are very real. Lots of feeling in this book! Well done!
This is a new to me author so I was very curious when I was sent this ARC. @ has been very kind so I looked forward to reading it. This is a Pride and Prejudice inspired book with a twist.
Vivi She has a lot of confidence issues and compares herself to her sister. She dreams of one day becoming a famous author or at least an author. I really related to how she viewed her life at the beginning. It's literally how I feel. "My life is nice. Nothing exciting, no love just comfortable in my own space." She is someone who is seeking out her own romance story to the point she starts writing one based off of the people around her. She's not very strong willed but very kind and caring. She definitely has her mood swings though and can be insanely stubborn. Her biggest flaw as a person is she tries to make a romance out of everyone's interactions including her own.
Jack He is a kind and considerate man. He was her best friend and played that role well never pushing for more. He was always there for her until something changed. He is a talented writer but very secretive of his own life even to his best friend. His feelings were so obvious it hurt me. He has a heart of gold and I absolutely want him to get the love her deserves.
Gregory He is portrayed as being her Mr Darcy. He is a wealthy successful business man who is honestly a complete jerk. I kept wanting to give him a chance because he's supposed to be Darcy who learns to not be a jerk but something about him was setting alarms off in my head and not the good kind (I Loooovvvee red flag books lol). I just really didn't like him and my distain towards him made reading some parts hard for me (story was written perfectly)
It was a very well written story. The conversations had a great flow to them and really help pull you into the story. She even made the parts you wanted to scream at the characters so strong that I may have yelled at my book a few times while reading
My heart hurt reading some of the interactions between jack and Vivi. It was so clear as day how Jack felt about her. I've been in that spot and it just made me love Jack more.
A few times I got frustrated with the story because I felt it was so obvious that there was no way she could be that dumb but at the same time it was so perfectly written that way I couldn't help but be impressed. The reader knew more than the characters and I really enjoyed watching it unfold.
I thought it was such a wonderful addition that we got to read some of the story Vivi was writing. Like a book in a book.
I have read Pride and Prejudice but had no clue the author's name so I legit had no idea what type of book i was walking into since I didn't know it was Austen haha.
The ending was absolutely perfect and made me giggle like the hopeless romantic that I am.
I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
If you like Austenesque books do give this book a go. Unfortunately, this book wasn't for me, which was disappointing because I was so excited to read it. I couldn't bring myself to continue reading after 7 chapters, the more I read the more I disliked the book.
My first impression of Viviana was that she is a whiney slob and maybe a slight alcoholic. My first Impression of Annie was that she is a flirty teenager throwing herself at Brandon from the very moment they met. I also got the feeling that Annie was very childish for her age range. I felt like Jack was kind of painted as Mr. Perfect, I'm not really sure what to think of Brandon and Gregory other than snobs. It also seems like Viviana puts up with Greg's rudeness simply because, 1. he is Brandon's friend and 2. he is good-looking, which I didn't feel was right.
In the last half of chapter 4 Viviana is invited to a hotel by Annie, at first Viviana wants to stay home, but Annie convinces her to go by texting: 'You really should reconsider! Greg wants to talk...' which he never really talks directly to Viviana beyond business talk more or less. Upon arrival Annie is the one to answer the door, Viviana finds out that Brandon, Annie, and Greg have been in the jacuzzi drinking. When Viviana starts to say she doesn't have a swimsuit Annie interrupts and tells her: "Oh, there's tons of swimsuits in the closet - just go pick one," I cringed. I cringed even more at Viviana's reaction or rather the lack of a reaction beyond: 'I raised eyebrows and stepped tentatively toward the walk-in closet'. It bothers me greatly that it is never really questioned why there is a closet full of women's swimsuits in a hotel room rented by 2 men on a business trip, especially when the company is a publisher of some sort. I could understand the closet full of swimsuits a little more if they worked for a fashion company, but even that still sounds cringy to me.
I know this was only 7 chapters into the book, but I did not like the way the characters were written, or their choices so far. I'm sure the characters will grow throughout the book, but I was not enjoying it well enough to continue reading. I find when I have that kind of reaction to a book it is best to put it down and walk away from it. Maybe when the audiobook comes out, I'll try listening to it and see if I like it better that way.
Again, if you like Austenesque books do give this book a go, don't pass it by because of my thoughts on the book. Thank you, Alana Highbury, for the chance to read your book, I hope many people love it.
Rating: 4.5/5 I received the eARC for my honest opinion.
A woman named Vivian, who loves Jane Austen’s books and movies, is having a hard time with life right now. She is about to turn 30 and doesn’t really know where her life is going. When a handsome, rich male walks into her job and her boss tells her that Gregory might be her Mr. Darcy, she dives down that rabbit hole, and maybe she might have done that a little too soon. Things are not adding up to her, she has overlooked a few things that maybe she shouldn’t have, but sadly overhears a conversation that Gregory is having, and that really brings reality crashing in. However, that doesn’t stop her from getting back up and grabbing her life by the reins and making her life the way that she wanted.
I found that the author, Alana, did a great job making sure that this book was something that all readers would feel like in real life, but with a happy ending. I loved getting to see how Vivian would date, and how she felt afterwards, I know a few times I wish I had listened to my gut more on a few dates and this is one book that will show you when you start getting those weird feelings about something, don't brush them off. I loved the plot twists that you will find throughout the book, I loved that we had a character who is writing her first book and of course it’s her own twist of Pride and Prejudice, I loved that you will see that she has anxiety and self-doubt but she is wanting to make sure that she gets her HEA. I found her friends to be easy to connect with and I loved Jack. I know as a reader I saw the signs before Vivian that Jack was there for her and not just in a friendship way and when she started to have those thoughts I wanted to scream YES!!! I loved the banter in this book between the characters, even when it wasn’t meant to be banter but more of I’m mad at you, because I have been there. Lol.
This book was so sweet, charming, heartfelt, a book that shows readers that dreams do come true, friends to lovers, slow burn and my favorite part he falls first. It’s a modern day love story with all the modern drama and hardships that we face from time to time.
I want to thank Alana Highbury for the opportunity to review this book.
I was so excited to read Alana Highbury’s latest release, Austen-Inspired. I mean when you combine Jane Austen and a modern romcom, you really can’t lose in my mind. Well, I adored this book. It was full of references to Jane’s books while also telling a unique and modern story. It was such a fun read. The story focused on Viviana, who is a freelance editor and aspiring writer. She is obsessed with all things Jane Austen (which I totally get and respect). She spends most of her time with her best friend Jack and couple girlfriends. She has been unlucky in love, but she pines for Mr. Darcy (Colin Firth’s version, which I totally get and approve of). When her boss suggests that a new acquaintance might be Viviana’s own personal Mr. Darcy, Viviana’s Mr. Darcy obsession is taken to another level. As Viviana juggles her “Mr. Darcy,” Jack starts to act weird and her relationship with him starts to change. The story that follows is full of hope, self-doubt and self-realization, friendship, family, romance, and love. Viviana was so clueless for much of the story. She is full of self-doubt, and she jumps to conclusions too quickly. I wanted to shake some sense into her so many times. It was frustrating but so true to Viviana’s character as a die hard Mr. Darcy fan. Even with these frustrations, I totally adored Viviana. I thought Alana did a great job of bringing Viviana to life. Viviana’s character arc was so well done, especially the shattering of her Austen created view of men. The ending was so good and worth all the difficulties throughout the book. Things to love: -Jane Austen references -Viviana’s modern Pride and Prejudice adaptation -Viviana’s relationship with Jack -Viviana’s thoughts in italics -Jack -Viviana’s text messages with everyone -Viviana’s obsession with Mr. Darcy -the horse-drawn carriage -Jack’s hugs -first kiss and the second kiss This book was such a fun read. I loved how Alana mixed the craziness of an Austen-obsession with the self-doubt and anxiety so many women today feel. It was real but also made my own Mr. Darcy-loving-self happy. I can’t wait to read the next book in the series when it comes out. I can already tell that it is going to be just as good as this one.
In Austen Inspired, we get a mix of Austenland (contemporary Austen-obsessed heroine looking for a IRL Mr. Darcy), Pride & Prejudice with all its in-story parallels and Vivianna's book inspo, plus the FMC is classic Emma (playing matchmaker, relatively immature and in love with her male BFF).
"But how should I act, playing the role of Lizzie yet knowing I was playing that role? Living that role."
Vivianna thinks she is a Lizzie, but she is for sure an Emma. Who doesn't love Mr. Darcy? She becomes so tunnel visioned that she misses some major clues on the men in her life. I didn't like the Mr. Darcy archetype in this story, but I believe that was intentional, as was the Bingley character... they were really the Wickham or the Willoughby
"Must keep cool to avoid scaring him—he doesn’t need to know that you’ve projected onto him more than a decade of hopes and dreams for finding your own Mr. Darcy!"
As a huge fan of Jane Austen fan fiction or variations, I loved that this was really a story within a story, where Vivianna was creating her own Austeneque story based on her real love life. She spends so much time pining for a man that she nearly misses her perfect match in her long-time neighbor and best friend, Jack.
"I thought my story would be a Pride & Prejudice romance, but clearly I—we—have ended up in an Emma situation.”
I appreciate the flawed characters and the full circle moments. Even though our heroine is on the struggle bus for much of the story, and the dreaded miscommunication trope is a major driver of the storyline, it feels true to a character who is spiraling. I am thankful for some really lovely side character friends who make Vivianna grounded in reality. We all need that type of village!
I would note this story is best for audiences 18+ due to some innuendo, swearing, and frequent mentions of alcohol use. This is a closed-door romance with kisses only.
Thank you to the author for a complimentary copy of this story to read and review. All thoughts contained here are my own.
I love the premise of this book—what you think is going to be a simple Pride and Prejudice retelling is actually so much more, and it’s so much fun. It turns out, this is a sort of mash up between P&P and Emma. Vivi is ready for her love life to get a life. And she’s ready for her work life to be more fulfilling. She’s an editor but wants to be a writer. She loves Jane Austen’s books. So when the owner of the publishing company she freelances for turns out to be a bit of a Mr. Bingley and has his Mr. Darcy-esque friend with him, Vivi thinks maybe she’s going to get to be a real life Elizabeth Bennet. Not only that, but she could use the experience of getting to know Gregory (her own personal Mr. Darcy, she hopes) as inspiration for her own novel. But all along she’s blind to her best friend, Jack who is clearly in love with her. And she’s giving not great advice to her friend Annie (I’m thinking Annie is going to get a Persuasion retelling of her own with Vivi as her Lady Russell). So that ultimately, Vivi is less an Elizabeth and more an Emma.
I love the bits of Vivi’s book that we get. They’re revealing in their own ways. Plus it’s just fun to have a sort of book within a book.
One of the things I’ve noticed about Highbury’s books is that she’s good at writing about characters who deal with anxiety. And we get that here too with Vivi, who deals with anxiety and self-doubt.
All-in-all, this is a delightful read. Going along with Vivi as she tries so hard to make Gregory a Mr. Darcy before finally seeing the perfectly wonderful Mr. Knightley who’s been with her all along is frustrating at times, but an easy path to a HEA wouldn’t be nearly as fun to read.
I received a free review copy of this book from the author. I was not required to leave a positive review. All opinions are my own.
Working from home with her best friend Jack down the hall, Viviana Cantwell leads a comfortable life, yet she can’t ignore the low hum of anxiety and whispers of self-doubt: You’re in your 30s now. Working a boring job. And still single.
When a gorgeous, arrogant publishing executive comes to town with his wealthy, charming friend, Viviana sees the answer to all her problems. She can date her dream man and embark upon her dream career: a novel featuring her very own Mr. Darcy should write itself, right?
But falling for her best friend instead doesn’t fit into her plan—or her book plot. Plagued with confusing feelings about Jack, heaps of self-doubt, and constantly flawed assumptions about everyone, she clings to the one thing that’s always been right in her life, her friendship with Jack—she can’t risk losing him too.
Review:
Full disclosure: I’m basically obsessed with Jane Austen, and have been for as long as I can remember. So, I went into this book with more than a little bias that I would adore it. And it did not disappoint! This book is basically one long and lovely love letter to Austen lovers everywhere, and I am here for it!
Austen Inspired is one of the most fun books I’ve read in quite some time. It's light, it's funny, it gives all of the happy feelings, and it just makes my heart smile. It’s the absolute perfect book to escape into when the real world feels too heavy. I loved all of the Austen references throughout, and now I’m positively itching for some rereads! I also adore a best friend-to-lovers trope, and this one is just… Swoon. No one will ever quite live up to Colin Firth as Mr. Darcy, but Jack puts up a solid fight for the top rank!
Many thanks to @bookedwiththeemilys and @alanahighbury_author for the #gifted copy of this book and the opportunity to read and review it.
3.5 stars, rounded up to 4. This was a pretty cute contemporary romance. If the title is any indication - it's very much centered around Austen! She's looking for a Pride & Prejudice style romance, but just may end up with a romance more along the lines of Emma.
Viviana, the FMC, is a decent character - her anxiety takes over quite often and she has a lot of negative self talk that she actively works on throughout the book - which is a super important and great thing to read about! She's an editor and thinks that she wants a romance with an older guy that is - to be frank, incredibly rude and entitled. What follows is truly a series of unfortunate events - ups & downs (mostly of her own making), an enormous amount of drama, oh and running. A lot of running - which was also a nice little added thing and really helped things show up and develop.
The one, true, constant in her life is her best friend of 15 years, Jack. He's her best friend, neighbor, and greatest confidant only he's struggling with some work things and other things so he's trying to cope the best that he can as well. Ultimately, he helps her to see who matters and who truly doesn't when it comes down to it.
There were a lot of other characters to keep track of - her sister was a big one as I felt that entire storyline was just left undone? It bothered me a fair bit, but I'm hopeful that we may get more in a future book - but time will tell!
All in all this is a really cute book - the ending was phenomenal and made me grin and giggle a fair bit. If you're an Austen fan then you might really enjoy this take on a modern adaptation! It's a no spice, fairly quick read as I was able to finish it in less than a day!
Wow!! I absolutely loved this book!! And I highly recommend!! From the first line I was hooked! Viviana Cantwell A.K.A Vivi to friends, finds her self in the battlefield of love. Throughout the book you find that although Viviana says and feels she doesn’t care for a love life due to her past love experiences, she truly is a sucker for love and romance. She’s A true Jane Austen fan and inspired in finding her happily ever after! I loved how Viviana was writing her story within this story, and how she was so into it, she felt that she was living her book & playing the part(s). I definitely felt the sweet and the angst from the main characters! Viviana was so blinded by her Austeneque obsession of finding her true love, her Mr. Darcy, she was totally missing it/him... Many times I wanted shake her and tell her HELLO your Mr. Darcy is right in front of your face lol. She is stuck when she meets a very handsome and wealthy man at work. However she is unsure if the feeling is mutual but she truly believes he may be the one. She normally confides, and goes to her Best Friend/ The guy down the street Jack however she’s struggling to open up about her love life to him suddenly. I totally enjoyed and loved the twists of it all!! This author did an absolute amazing job!! Everything so well and vividly written!! Thank you so very much for everything!! 😁🫶🏻 And Congratulations on this awesome book release 2/11/25! 🥳 Happy Reading!! 😁🤗
As a lifelong Austen fan, I found this book to be an absolute delight. Highbury seamlessly weaves elements from Austen's novels into the fabric of contemporary life, creating a narrative that's both familiar and fresh.
The story centers on a strong, relatable heroine who is grappling with the complexities of love, career, and personal growth, all while navigating the pressures of modern social expectations. Much like Elizabeth Bennet or Anne Elliot, the protagonist is sharp-witted, independent, and, at times, stubborn—traits that lead her to both comedic and poignant moments throughout the novel.
The romantic tension is palpable, with the hero resembling a modern-day Mr. Darcy—reserved yet compelling. The back-and-forth between the two characters is beautifully crafted, filled with misunderstandings and slow-burn chemistry that will have any Austen lover grinning from ear to ear. The writing is witty and clever, reminiscent of the sparkling dialogue Austen is known for, but with a contemporary sensibility that makes it feel immediately relatable.
What truly sets this book apart is its ability to capture Austen's timeless exploration of societal norms and individual agency. The characters face challenges that echo the constraints of the 19th century, but in a 21st-century setting—navigating family pressures, social media, and the expectations of success, all while trying to hold onto their identities.
I admit, I have not read a Jane Austen novel; I know, I know! But I have seen the film adaptations, and I love a good retelling, so 𝐀𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐧 𝐈𝐧𝐬𝐩𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐝 was an enjoyable read for me.
I loved that Viviana is an aspiring novelist who is obsessed with Jane Austen. In fact, Austen’s work and characters are infused into Vivi’s life, including her work, friends, love life, and inner monologue.
When Vivi’s publishing boss comes to town, he brings a friend, Gregory, who exudes a certain charm despite his rudeness and arrogance. For some reason, Vivi finds herself drawn to him, believing he might be her Mr. Darcy.
Jack, Vivi’s best friend of over fifteen years, is a constant presence in her life. His unwavering support and devotion are a stark contrast to the way Gregory treats Vivi. Soon, Vivi finds herself confused and conflicted.
Yes, there is a lot of miscommunication, but it unfolds in such a sweet and endearing way! It’s the age-old story of not seeing what’s right in front of you. I enjoyed all the references to Austen’s characters; they made me want to read the novels - finally.
Not only is this a delightful romance, full of books and writing, but the female friendships played a big part, too. In fact, it sounds like one of Vivi’s friends will get her own story in the next book.
Thank you @alanahighbury_author for the gifted ebook.
✨ Rating: 3.5/5 ✨ Genre: Contemporary Romance ✨ Spice: Closed Door Romance, No Spice
Thank you to Booked with The Emily’s for this ARC in exchange for my participation in the book tour. As always, my thoughts and opinions are my own and genuine!
While I have never considered me to be Austen obsessed (I’ve only seen Pride & Prejudice three times, I think?) I still absolutely LOVE Austen retellings and stories inspired by her works, and this book was no exception. This modern blend of Pride & Prejudice and Emma is such a sweet read where we not only have friends to lovers, but also the guy falling first, which is always a plus. Also, knowing ahead of time that the miscommunication trope was going to pop up actually made it less of an issue for me, which is always good!
Additional notes since finishing: I want to add that there were a few times throughout the book that I was yelling at Vivi through my kindle, begging her to just chill and stop acting like jumping to conclusions is an Olympic sport, but I LOVED what Highbury said in the Author’s Note, that miscommunication, doubt, and assumptions are a part of life and that’s why she includes them in her books.
If you’re looking for a cute, closed door romance with hysterical friends, a slow burn romance, and of course all the Austen references you could ever want, this is the book for you
Thanks to @bookedwiththeemilys @alanahighbury_author for the #gifted copy of this book
"This kiss was everything that first kisses should be, but also everything that second and third kisses should be."
Summary: Though Viviana enjoys her comfortable life, she always has anxiety over different accomplishments she should have achieved by her 30s. So when a grumpy businessman, who she thinks is her "Mr. Darcy," shows up at a work event, Viviana works hard to make the romance happen. But when things begin to unravel with her Mr. Darcy, Viviana suddenly discovers that she might have feelings for her best friend, Jack. This story is loosely based on Jane Austen's Emma and Pride and Prejudice.
Dani's Thoughts: If you are an Austen fan, you should read this book... I don't know Emma (still on my TBR), but I do love Pride and Prejudice and saw themes of that story throughout this one. This was a cute, closed-door romance with almost a love triangle, although Viviana did not realize what was happening with her and Jack. I loved how patient(...maybe a little too patient) her friend Jack was throughout the story waiting for her to see his feelings, even though he hid them well. It was fun watching Viviana grow into herself and find a new dream after quitting her freelance job, especially since she was sticking up for herself.
