Here, together for the first time, are the complete CHRONICLES OF AMBER: Nine Princes In Amber... The Guns of Avalon... Sign of the Unicorn... The Hand of Oberon... AND the long anticipated final book, The Courts of Chaos - in a handsome two volume set.
Amber is the one real world, casting infinite reflections of itself - Shadow worlds that can be manipulated by those of royal Amberite blood. Unfortunately, the royal family is torn by jealousies and suspicions. And the disappearance of the clan patriarch, Oberon, has intensified the conflicts by leaving Amber's throne apparently up for grabs.
The CHRONICLES begin in a hospital on the Shadow Earth, where a man is recovering from a freak auto accident. Since he is also suffering from amnesia, and has been for some time, he has no idea that he's Prince Corwin of Amber - until his memory receives a succession of jolts:
He meets a sister who speaks in riddles of plots and counterplots... and a brother who abruptly involves him in a life-and-death battle against pursuers from a fearful Shadow world.
He discovers a deck of tarot-like cards, with himself, his sister, and strangers whom he guesses to be other relatives, pictured on their faces. Only lingering amnesia keeps him from grasping the full significance of the find: the cards are the Greater Trumps of Amber, used by his family to communicate across vast distances, and transport one another through Shadows in an instant.
Then comes the most shattering jolt of all... Corwin's confrontation with an intricate design created by a master manipulator of reality - the Pattern. By walking the Pattern, those of the blood royal gain the ability to control Shadows. But the slightest hesitation or misstep during the trial means death.
As Corwin sets foot upon that coldly glowing inscription, memories come flooding back to him... more and more with each step. And finally, knowing his true identity, he acknowledges his true ambition - and resolves that the crown of Amber will be his.
But unknown to Corwin, there are dark forces massing against Amber... and before too long he will discover just how great a burden a king's crown can be...
Roger Joseph Zelazny was an American fantasy and science fiction writer known for his short stories and novels, best known for The Chronicles of Amber. He won the Nebula Award three times (out of 14 nominations) and the Hugo Award six times (also out of 14 nominations), including two Hugos for novels: the serialized novel ...And Call Me Conrad (1965), subsequently published under the title This Immortal (1966), and the novel Lord of Light (1967).
Grāmatai joprojām lieku 10 no 10 ballēm.
Corwin, an amnesiac who starts the book in a hospital bed due to a car crash eventually visits his sister and gets entangled and involved in the machinations and intrigue involving his massive family of royal siblings in another place called Amber. This begins a long series of sci-fu/fantasy that I have never read before. I would always see the rather iconic cover in book stores growing up of the guy in a cape with a sword facing off against a tiger looking monster, but decided now is the time to read it. This book contains the first two volumes of ten with Corwin piecing together the puzzle of his background, siblings both good and bad, missing father, and his attempt to regain the crown of Amber from his rival brother Eric. A lot of time and space travel involved but a quick read given the amount that Zelazny stuffs into each book.

I read the entire original series (the second series with Merle had not yet been published) over the summer before sixth grade. My parents had the Chronicles in two hardbound volumes, minus the dustjackets, so I had no idea what they were about when I started reading. It is very interesting to read them this way, with no warning that what seems to be a mysterious but mundane situation is going to transmute into a world-bending fantasy. This makes the reactions of the amnesiac protagonist much more resonant: like Corwin, the reader is unprepared to suddenly leave known reality behind.
Back in the early 90s, I borrowed the two volume set for the Chronicles of Amber from a friend. Since I was not what one would consider an avid reader at the time, I was surprised by how quickly I was consumed by this book. I spent every available moment during breaks at work reading as much of this book as possible. I read more of it after work and finished the book in what was, for me, an amazingly short period of time. Thus was I introduced to the writings of Roger Zelazny. As much as I wanted to retain this book in my library for future readings, I felt the least I could do was repay the kindness of my friend by returning it. I later obtained my own copy of the stories through the single volume Great Book of Amber.
The Chronicles of Amber consists of ten books in total. This volume contains the first five of these books. What I found quite interesting about the collection is that, while the books are all told in first person perspective, the first five are told from the perspective of Corwin, while the second five (which take place some time after the end of the 5th book) are told from the perspective of his son. What is most intriguing, however, is that the voice between the first five and second five books are very distinct. It feels as if you are reading books written by two different people with very different voices. This only serves to further immerse the reader in the stories being told.
Thirty years later, the Chronicles of Amber still tops my list of favorite book series, not just within the fantasy genre, but within all genres. I have never found anything that quite compares or has drawn me in nearly as completely as these books.
The First Chronicle of Amber is a groundbreaking series from the early 1970s when Zelazny was at the height of his creativity. We follow the exploits of Corwin, who awakens in a hospital with no memory of who he is. The cliche is forgivable due to the sheer glee with which Zelazny introduces us to his Amberverse.
There are five books in the First Chronicles of Amber - the first two are included in this collection.
Zelazny's fantasy classic! The worn-out cliche of waking up with no memory can be forgiven since the book was written and published about 50 years ago. In fact, the story holds up surprisingly well for its age, although the frequently used phrase "dig?" feels awkward and women's roles are confined to playthings. But despite the mileage, all roads still lead to Amber.
Corwin romances and fights his way through Shadow, meeting some relatives and finding out just how far his curse has carried. After meeting up with a former associate, he begins to plan another attack on Amber. And of course, Corwin is never the kind of guy to bring a knife to a gunfight.
Naravno, imam i zamerke.
Great read. Brings you through an alternate reality of sorts showing a family that takes sibling rivalry to another level. Keeps you hooked to the story and has a level of unpredictability that can be hard in a book of this style.
I read the first volume of the Amber series many years ago. Liked it well enough, but not as much as some other Zelazny novels, notably Lord of Light and Creatures of Light and Darkness.
Having now read through books one and two of the saga, I find my original impressions still stand.
The first few chapters of Nine Princes in Amber are fantastic, a tour-de-force of sustained irony and tension as the protagonist wakes up in a hospital with no memory and bluffs, connives, and forces his way through one dangerous encounter after another. This is also a brilliant narrative device for introducing the reader to the fictional world, as we learn the amazing facts of this world along with the point-of-view character.
And the world is impressive: a Universe of realities, all reflections of the central Realm of Amber, of which our hero is a prince. One prince of many in a large, dysfunctional dynastic family full of rivalries, hatreds and betrayals. Plenty of room for drama and adventure, and Zelazny gives the world just enough scaffolding to support his narrative as it dances and cartwheels along. So don't look too deep or ask too many questions.
This is fun, ironic fantasy. Nothing profound, but enough to make me want to read the last three novels. Just not yet.
I recall being 13 at my grandmothers for Thanksgiving with this edition fresh from the Science Fiction Book Club. Random's narrative in Sign of the Unicorn was being devoured by my eyes.
Worlds flow like water for the members of the royal court of Amber. Superhumanly powerful but all too human children of the house of Oberon fight like brothers but brothers with armies.
This is the book series that made me want to be a writer. It has action, romance, high concept, and questions of character for Corwin the main character.
Corwin's experiences in Lorraine (in book 2 "The Guns of Avalon") where he meets the woman Lorraine and his old Lieutenant Ganelon could stand alone. Over the first 5 books there are more amazing memorable moments than I have time to describe.
The Chronicles of Amber may bend your mind but it will definitely not Disappoint.
Corwin wakes up in the clutches of someone claiming to be his sister. He has no memories but knows he must bluff his way into freedom. A few audacious con-man moves later, he is travelling between alternate worlds, alternately fleeing, fighting and helping his numerous siblings. They are the nobility of Amber, and the victor will rule them all--and all of reality. Corwin is a golden age hero, complete with bravado and silly gender issues, but his adventures are a lot of fun to read
Tek gerçek dünya Amber, diğerleri sadece Amber'in gölgesinden oluşan bir evrende olduğumuzu düşünün. Amber'in sahibi aniden ortadan kaybolunca tahta çıkacak 9 prens sıraya girer.
Making some allowances for the passage of 50 years since publication (e.g. omg there's so much smoking) this holds up quite well.
I don't think I ever read past the first volume (first two books) and I haven't read any of them since high school so my memories were certainly no better than vague. It's interesting how much Zelazny skims past: things that would be absolutely vital by today's storytelling standards (battles, details about conversations) and yet nothing is missing and it keeps the plot tearing along without pause.
Oh dear.
Tomēr man emocionālas atsvešinātības bija par daudz.
This is the first two books. The main character is not altogether likeable, but does grow on you throughout the books. Amber is the only true place. All others are part of the shadow worlds. The creation of the alternate worlds is unique and makes the series worth reading. The ruling family is full of intrigue and are immortal. They can be killed but barring accident, warfare, or murder, they have lived for centuries. Corwin seeks to displace his brother Eric as king. It is a good fantasy and creates an interesting fantasy world.
