This book is a classic of its kind. Although it is probably best known for its discussion of the kinesiological muscle test, it is ultimately more important for showing that stimuli, whether physical or otherwise, effect our Life Energy constantly for better or worse. Furthermore, these effects tend to be the same for all observers: uncousciously, this painting, that food and so on all effect us the same, regardless of what we think in our conscious minds. This, of course, is a remarkable discovery, and the implications of it have been explored more fully by Dr. Diamond in many of his subsequent works. In short, this has to be one of the most important health books of the twentieth century.

I read this book years ago, and later searched out the author who used to give seminars outside NYC. Amazing, amazing human being with crystal clarity. This book created a movement for people to start looking at how to look into themselves, take ownership of their health and take responsibility for how their emotions and subconscious mind effect the body, and how everything around us effects our life energy, our chi. Dr. Diamond is Australian and an MD and psychiatrist who felt there had to be more to offer people, to help them heal and began exploring unconscious mind's relationship to health. After years of study and practice he delineated a system of acupuncture points and their relationship with specific states of mind, which in turn effect various systems and organs of the body. The book shows methods for activating a person's life energy using the acupuncture meridian system.

It's a good foundation book still, after all these years, but for people who are already exploring the mind-body-spirit relationships, it may be more interesting to skip ahead to his book, Life Energy: Using the Meridians to Unlock the Hidden Power of Your Emotions, and then skip from there to reading his next 20 or so books as chapter books or kindle reads. He has a website where you can find the downloads. The later books are much more beautiful and deep and complex. They go deeper into the unconscious and explore more states of health. And are more literary. In the early books like Your Body Doesn't Lie and Life Energy, the publishing house editors took out the beauty and linguistic explorations and boiled it down to the nuts and bolts, which, in effect, stripped the work of the aspects that were intended to foster unconscious, healing shifts. One of my favorites is Facets Of A Diamond: Reflections Of A Healer, which is a collection of his writings over many years and can be read in random order, which suits me. Another is a very small book called Holism and Beyond: The Essence of Holistic Medicine. Holism is one of those books you'll loan to people over an over, and even though very short, it's worth owning.

A very quick read. Mr Diamond surrounds all his ideas here around the function of the thymus gland & presents us with a very simple test regarding how we can tell if it's reacting healthy to our environment.

He then presents many topics related to how he's used this test and it's relationship to our environment. He calls this sensitivity Behavioural Kinesiology & his test the BK test.

The print is from 1979. Upon reading the first chapter I was rather excited to dig into the book, regardless it sat aside for several months until I picked it up again. Now, reading through I find myself at times unnerved at how hokey it must be & how dated some of the diagrams are, but then pleasently surprised at some of the very positive messages in this book.

I wish I could throw the baby out here & keep the bathwater: the fact that we need to be more present in our bodies & aware of how our environment affects us. We need to give this more significance in our lives.

Dr. John Diamond urges the need for us all to take back the responsibility for being well. The author tells of how his close working relationship with his colleague, Dr. Goodheart, expert in the field of Applied Kinesiology, impacted on his own work, by enabling him to practice medicine democratically. Diamond’s own research and practice led, in time, to the separate but related discipline of Behavioral Kinesiology (BK), an integration of psychiatry, psychosomatic medicine, Kinesiology, preventive medicine, and the humanities, on which Your Body Doesn’t Lie: Unlock the Power of Your Natural Energy! is based.

In unpacking what he has learned from his own experiences with patients in the field, Dr. Diamond shows how we ourselves can determine the extent to which we allow various factors in our environment and in our lifestyle to affect our body energy. He suggests how we can replace many of our current energy-depleting activities with ones that are energy-enriching. He also advises us on how we can modify, or counteract, the effect of those life-sapping factors that we cannot totally avoid.

Starting with a discussion of the importance of the thymus gland as the seat of our Life Energy, Dr. Diamond reveals how stress levels can affect cerebral balance. In order to overcome the deleterious effects of negative stress upon our bodies, he offers some simple techniques for counteracting such results. Taking several everyday objects, such as sunglasses and ice water, he shows how they can weaken one’s Life Energy if they are used improperly and suggests alternative modes of use that can, instead, be life-enhancing.

Dr. Diamond shows how beneficial most music and the sounds of nature can be. Not only does he list those conductors who have led exceptionally long and healthy lives, but he also traces the therapeutic value of music back through history to the early writings of the Chinese, Greeks, Egyptians, Persians, and Hindus. Diamond warns against the consumption of life-draining foods, such as artificial, highly refined, and processed foods, urging us to strive to eat that which is healthy and “live.” Lastly, he concludes with how we can gain the most from correctly aligning our posture.

Your Body Doesn’t Lie: Unlock the Power of Your Natural Energy! is a short self-help manual on how to restore your body to its maximum potential. All the advice that Dr. Diamond gives is possible, if not always easy, to follow. Illustrated with several black-and-white photographs and drawings, the text is accessible and a pleasure to read. It is highly recommended for all those who wish to assert their right to health and well-being to the full. Kjirstin introduced myself and Dominic to one of her clients/friends from Xtend Barre. This lovely person was a nutritionist who designs restaurant menus for places such as Harlow on Hawthorne. We chatted about dreaming your life into reality and other fun things, but got carried away taking about food and how your body knows what it needs and will tell you. As we spoke, the cover of an old book I've carried around for years popped into my mind:
Your Body Doesn't Lie.

This short read by John Diamond is primarily focused on the powerful use of mussel testing known as Behavioral Kinesiology. While the forward of the book instructs the reader to experience the testing with a friend first hand, I have to admit that when I tried it with my brother I saw no difference... For the time being I gave up on the practical application and decided to give this book the benefit of the doubt.

While this book is from the 80's and a bit outdated, I am really glad I stuck it out all the way to the end. In fact, I am now quite interested in learning some Behavioral Kinesiology and perfecting this practice, but it probably won't happen for a while.

I am looking over the table of contents and realizing that each chapter stood out to me for different reasons. Many of the things Diamond writes about, such as the adverse effect of wearing synthetic fibers, are things my mom used to talk about all the time. It was nice to read about it from a scientific perspective and has made me feel good about continuing to pursue "Life Energy" giving practices such as making sure my shirts are 100% cotton, eating fresh veggies, listening to classical music, working on my posture, taking showers, tapping my thymus, and being aware of the people around me and how they affect me.

This book's title basically says it all, but there was a very interesting section about what happens when we do things that are bad for us on a regular basis, like eating too much sugar. Basically your body starts to lie to us telling us that that which is bad is really good... I find this particularly interesting because of how this is something that the church preaches.

I was supper fascinated by his chapter on music and the weakening effects of the anapestic beat found in rock music. I can't believe I didn't come across this in high school when Brett Bollier and I did a research project on the effects of music on studying. There is a bunch of interesting stuff on this online. Here is a short article that sums it up nicely. The chapter on music in this book also make me think of Nicholle Andrews who would love what it says about conductors and probably have mixed feelings about the rest :)

Over all a super interesting book and one I will go back to for sure.

Another interesting health book about kinesiology and tapping into our body's wisdom of what is and is not good for us. Kind of an "out there" book but it makes you think about your surroundings more.

Years before reading books on kinesiology, I had the fortune of having a first hand experience; it was mind blowing. Such an unique arena for research.
