Former Army helicopter pilot Jake Donovan is lucky to be alive. At least that's what his team of neurosurgeons said. But he knows differently. Jake's crimes almost cost Holly Hoffman her life, and even though he can't remember, the pain in her eyes is something he'll never forget.
Holly's done being a victim. As a trauma nurse her skills are needed by a humanitarian group providing medical aid after a killer storm ravages the Gulf Coast of Texas. Saving lives however, wont be an option when a madman wants her dead.
Can Jake and Holly shed the weight of his dark past, or will their happily-ever-after have a fatal ending.
In the first book of this series, Hell or High Water, (****spoiler ahead if you haven't read it!****), we were stunned to learn that the evil Johnny Darling was Jake Donovan, a man that grew up with the Wolfe Pack and was considered to have been killed in action in Afghanistan. I've been dying to read his story since.
It's been two years and he's now in Murdoch, Texas working his aunt's ranch after having left Lost and Found, Inc. When he's asked to help out a neighboring city that was devasted by a hurricane, he finds himself working with Holly Hoffman, the woman he kidnapped during his time as Darling. While he can't forgive himself, she has and desperately needs him to get over it.
I've missed this series and it didn't take long for me to be reminded of Alexander's strong writing and storytelling chops. This story was brutal at times with some pretty ruthless villains. In the midst of all this is the developing relationship between Jake and Holly where we learn so much more about them. The tension is exceptional and I was often stunned by the casualties.
I really enjoyed this story and loved how Jake's situation was resolved. It was also nice to get updates on the characters from the earlier stories as well. This still is one of my favorite series.
(I received an ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review)
I sat in on one of Jerrie Alexander's panels last year at an author event, and I thought she was great. So funny. So I have been happy to get a couple of her ARCs since that time. Unfortunately I did myself a disservice with this book. Although I picked up signed copies of the first three books of this series - I haven't actually been able to fit them into my schedule yet. So I tried to come into the series in the middle, starting with this book. Mistake.
Jerrie is a good writer - and she has some good real world sources for her research that make her stories believable and authentic. So I encourage you to read the series from the beginning and not be a numpty like me. If you start with this book, you are going to be missing back story on all of the characters... but more importantly, you will be missing vital history between the hero and heroine of this installment. At the very least, you should read Hell or High Water. I wish I would have had done that myself.
This part contains spoilers for Hell or High Water...
So now its 2 years later and Jake Donovan has been living the farm life on his aunt's ranch in Murdoch, Texas. He seems to have found a measure of peace after his ordeal, though guilt over past behaviors is a heavy weight on his shoulders. I liked the Jake Donovan we met in this book, but I was missing a connection to his character that I probably would have felt if I read the books in order. I didn't feel like I had the patience or empathy for issues that probably would have garnered sympathy if I knew the history. Most of those issues revolved around him thinking he wasn't good enough for the heroine, or that she was better off without him.
Holly Hoffman has a bit of a tortured past - having been kidnapped by a human trafficking ring, only to be saved by her kidnapper and friends at Lost and Found, Inc. It seems like somewhere in the previous books (I'm not sure which one), Holly developed an attraction to Jake Donovan. She didn't expect to see him again when he left Lost and Found, and Dallas, behind. Yet they find themselves in the same storm-ravaged area of Texas providing care and assistance to families in need. Holly is there working as a nurse and Jake is helping the sheriff keep order and conduct search and rescue. However, danger soon finds Holly again and she and Jake are thrown together to keep her out of harm's way. Holly was a decent heroine... though I wasn't able to form a good connection to her character either. We really don't learn much about her in this story, so her character is another aspect that was hindered by me not reading the earlier books. I did get annoyed at times by Holly's wishy washy thoughts/behaviors with regard to her feelings for Jake. I kept wishing she would take matters into her own hands and stop waiting for him to make the first step.
The suspense features of this book were spot on and really helped advance the story as needed. I liked that we got some of the POV from the villains because my curious mind always wants to know whats happening the big bad's head. None of the events here really required you to suspend your belief very far... the events were plausible even if the lack of regard for life was horrifying. I enjoy romantic suspense a bit more when I can imagine the incidents actually happening, so I enjoyed this aspect of the book.
The romance was a bit hot and cold, which must be attributed largely to the history between Jake and Holly. Most of the obstacles to the relationship could be laid on Jake's shoulders, but Holly was just as much to blame for not taking the bull by the horns. I wish the ending would not have been so abrupt. I think, given the angst between our couple through the story, the ending could have been drawn out a bit more with adult discussion about their relationship and future. I think an epilogue would have also added something extra to the story... though if the characters continue into future books, I can see why that may have been left off.
I received a copy of this book at no cost from the author in exchange for an honest review. Full review posted at Bambi Unbridled. ["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>
I have read all of these books and loved them but this book was good on the surface of things but left me feeling like I had waded through a lot of misery to get to a somewhat decent but abrupt ending (so abrupt I wonder if there was a formatting error because there WAS a formatting error in the teaser for another book at the end)
Overall it was a good story but I am a freaking "revenge junkie" and love a good revenge/vengeance story but this novel actually surpassed my enjoyment of violence and throw in the overwhelming angst of the characters and you have a really good story not told as good as it could have been.
It should be noted that if you have not read the previous novels you will be hopelessly lost to the background of the 2 main characters which is the basis for much of the angst and referred to several times in the book.
Bottom Line: I still love these characters and feel sure I will buy the next book in this series but this one was not up to par with the other books in the series. Hopefully, the next one will get back to the level of excellence of the other 3 books. 3 1/2 Stars that I rounded to 3 instead of 4 because it could have been better so easily.
Ms. Alexander knows her villians! No Greater Hell reaches into the psyche of a serial killer and allows the reader a glimpse of a twisted mind. Not crazy, not ill, but criminally despicable and you'll love her writing all the more. I couldn't wait to read Jake and Holly's story, with such a dark past, I never would have thought Jake could be redeemed, but Ms. Alexander did it with style and extensive research. Dark and sexy, Jake is a hero worth fighting for! Great job!
I received an advance copy of No Greater Hell for an honest review.
WOW what a story! This one is a story about second chances but what makes this so much better is there is revenge, heat, suspense, and romance! Jake has isolated himself due to his past and is punishing himself. Holly is also punishing herself for her own reasons and both of them end up thrown together. The story is definitely not one that would be considered light and fluffy! This one has lots of depth and will keep you totally on the edge of your seat. Great story!
This book was awesome. I've been waiting to read Jake's story since he was introduced. I was definitely not disappointed. This book is about second chances in life and love. It was full of action and couldn't put down. It was nice to see the other characters and how they loved their friends. I highly recommend this book and series!!
I feel like I waited forever for Jake's story, bit it was worth it! Another amazing read from Jerrie Alexander. Can't wait to see what she comes up with next!
I have never been disappointed by Jerrie Alexander and she didn't let me down with this one. Took me two days to read as I had to work!!! You will not regret buying it! Definitely 5 stars!
And I'm back in the adrenaline pumping world of Lost and Found, Inc! And what a way to immerse yourself back with the Wolfe Pack. Jake is still recovering from the surgery to remove his brain tumour as the story begins. He carries the guilt of his actions when he was "Johnny Darling", even though he truly cannot be held accountable for them. He decides to move to his Aunts ranch and recover. He silently slips away and essentially isolates himself and his guilt away.
Fast forward a few years and Jake's body may have recovered but he is still feeling the guilt. When a natural disaster strikes nearby and he goes to offer assistance he never imagined he'd meet Holly there. He has done his best to forget her and what he did to her but here she is acting like he's some kind of hero and not the monster that he believes he is.
But when Holly once again finds herself in danger from a psychotic madman and his hitman brother, Jake is the only one that Holly calls on. She knows he will keep her safe. **********
I love this series. It's gritty without being too dark and the characters are all important to the story, they're not just there for window dressing. Ms Alexander writes nutjobs like no-one else I know LOL. I truly had my skin crawl when reading about Angel (that's gotta be the worst misnomer ever!) and his equally psychotic brother Ivan. I loved the irony of Jake reeling from guilt for his actions towards Holly and then through the story Holly doing the exact same thing, absorbing guilt for what she could not really control.
There was a really high body count in this one. The most fear inducing scene was in Suzanne's apartment (no spoilers). My heart was in my throat and I almost cried in relief by the time the scene was over.
So glad that Jake finally got to have his story told. Holly was the perfect foil to his brooding nature. She was capable, empathetic and effervescent even after all she had been through and ready to embrace what she felt towards Jake. So looking forward to more in this series!!!!
Life expectancy for characters in a Jerrie Alexander book are not very long. High body count in this latest in the Lost and Found, Inc series.
If you haven't read the previous books in this series I recommend at least reading Hell or High Water before reading this as Jake's story starts in that book. Also anything from this point could be spoilerish if you haven't read the previous books.
Jake's fate was hanging in the balance in the second and third book in the series. We finally get to see him recovered from his surgery but find that he is living with a ton of guilt over the things he did when he had the brain tumor. One of his biggest regrets is what he did to Holly even though in the end he saved her. Jake says good bye to his friends at Lost and Found, Inc and goes to work on his Aunt's farm. After a violent storm ravages the towns around him the last person he expects to see working at the temporary hospital set up to help storm victims is Holly.
After her horrible ordeal of being kidnapped and almost raped by a madman Holly decided she wanted to help others and went back to school to be a nurse. She is part a of volunteer medical team that gets sent to towns that have experienced disasters. Its been two years since she's seen Jake and she surprised to see Jake bring victims in. She's forgiven him for the past now if she could just convince Jake to forgive himself.
As with all disasters not only does it bring out good people but it also brings out the bad guys. Holly gets herself on the radar of a killer after a situation and Jake's immediately steps up to protect her even though he is at war with himself over his attraction to Holly.
An intriguing plot with just the right amount of romance.
No Greater Hell is the fourth book in Jerrie Alexander's Lost and Found, Inc. series but it was the first one I'd read. I'd heard these books are fast-paced and with intense suspense and I was not disappointed.
Since I hadn't read the other books, the opening was slightly confusing because I wasn't familiar with all of the characters. I appreciated how the author dropped bread crumbs of past events without slowing the current story's pacing. This is a standalone book and I enjoyed it as such.
The plot, though delightfully twisted, is plausible and not beyond the realm of possibility. The villain is a goose-bump inducing, sinister SOB. Not in a slasher-movie sort of way, but more of a he-could-be-walking-down-my-alley-right-now gut twisting fear. The deeper I settled into the story, the more I found myself thinking,
"Okay, he needs to die! Now!"
And Jake is just hot. I liked how the author shows him as a strong, protective man but avoids making him into a pretentious, overbearing, semi-stalker. He's hurting and he's scared, but he still respects the woman he has feelings for and doesn't charge into her space.
Holly is a strong character in her own right. She's not the damsel in distress, longing to be rescued. She steps up, takes charge and moves herself and others out of harms way. That's a woman I can admire.
Scary and intense. This is the story of Jake Donovan, who left Lost & Found after a serious illness and some terrible experiences. He wants to get away because he can't see how his friends can really trust him again, and the young lady he liked cringes when she sees him now. He knows she is afraid of him so he leaves to make everyone more comfortable. Two years later, he is approached by a sheriff in Murdock, Texas where he is living with and helping his aunt at her ranch. After a natural disaster, the nearby towns are in bad need of help with recovery.
Unknown to Jake, Holly, a nurse, has also come there to volunteer. Some awful happenings later, they realize that they care for each other and begin the healing process. This one is really scary, though, lots of seemingly random violence that makes sense only to the perpetrators. By the way, I would suggest that no one read this story without having read the first three books of the series. There is really a lot of backstory here that makes no sense without that.
I was given this book with a promise of a honest review.
Jake and Holly, both of them walked through hell, and I mean hell, each carries scars that don't seem to go away, Jake's are worse than Holly's. Jake found himself lost after a crash and after leaving the hospital with no memory of who he was, found employment, but not the kind that you would want, in this guise he was responsible for Holly's kidnaping. But some part of his old self was still there and surfaced long enough to save her. His friends bandied behind him and got him the help he needed. Once more reunited, Jake again finds himself protecting Holly and going through more hell than either wants. The plot line kept me glued to it until I finished the story, no more of the plot will I say for am sure there are readers out there that want to read it. Its a fantastic book and it will take you and trip of a lifetime.
Action packed craziness = this book. The whole thing starts off after a storm and Holly went to help aid the injured as a nurse. Jake has been living at his aunt's ranch helping out after all the things he had done while he had his tumor but the chief asked him to help out in the town that Holly happens to be working in. Their paths cross after both helping an elderly couple and when trouble happened she reached out to him for help. Jake protects Holly with all that he has but tries to keep her at a distance emotionally since he still carries a lot of guilt for the things that he did when he had his tumor. So much happens in this book and I don't want to spoil any of it but if you do see this I suggest you read the first books in the series because this does not stand on its own. No Greater Hell is the new book in The Lost and Found Inc. by Mrs. Jerrie Alexander. This is a book about self redemption, forgiveness, devastation, acceptance and love. The book takes you to the heart of what living means through a small town catastrophe that creates a feeling of loss, despair and vulnerability in the inhabitants. Mrs. Alexander describes perfectly the impact that hard working volunteers have, as well as how humans vultures that take advantages of a vulnerable community can aggravated a horrible situation. Jake Donavon and Holly Hoffman have had a strange and strong connection since book one and it resolves itself in a wonderful and beautiful way. But first they have to face a vengeful serial killer.
Jerrie Alexander is a genius! I have been eagerly anticipating this book and it did not disappoint. Jake is so tortured by his past and the things he feels he cant be forgiven for and Holly is the kind understanding woman who heals his heart. The book is fast paced with loads of action from the start. The chemistry is hot and sexy. The baddie is super evil and you will love to hate him. We see characters from previous books which I love, but for that reason I would recommend reading the series in order. Great book highly recommend.
I was caught in this book from the very beginning! I think Jake and Holly's story is the best one so far and I loved the first three books! I went from sobbing cries to furious with rage over the bad guy in this book! I'm usually so in love with the big, bad alpha heroes that I hardly give the bad guys a second thought. Well this bad guy had me in knots to the point I wanted to kill him myself! Read the book and you'll understand!
Book 4 is my favorite of the series. Who can resist heart breaking emotions, trauma, never-ending suspense and a hero with a tortured soul? I truly hope to see more of Jake and Holly in the next book and sooner rather than later..
Awesome awesome awesome.the long awaited Forth book.Jake's story, the story pulled you in and didn't Let go.suspense drama action.it had all. Me Alexander really out did herself. Great read
I think way to many people got killed in this book for me to have enjoyed the romance between hero and heroine. They were likeable enough though. I guess this type of writing isn't my cuppa tea.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
This book had all the murder, action and suspense of the previous books in the series and I had been looking forward to reading Jake’s story but I didn’t enjoy it as much as the previous ones. Don’t get me wrong it was still a good read and well written and I know this sounds weird when the story was around a serial killer but their was too much killing, unbelievable killing, too many innocents killed and for seemingly no reason, life was too cheap. I was pleased to see Jake finding his way back into the world and finding the ranch so therapeutic although I wish he hadn’t felt so detached from the people who loved and cared for him. So mixed messages from me but it was mostly enjoyable.
This relationship has been hinted at since the first book. Holly is the friend of the heroine from the first book. Jake, college friends with the MCs from the first book, kidnapped Holly then ultimately saved her. They've both wrestled with demons ever since and are thrown together when Holly is targeted by a psychopath. Holly wants to explore a relationship but Jake can't forget their traumatic past. Not sure u buy these 2 as a couple but they decide to make a go of it. Looking forward to reading about some of the other Lost and Found recruits in the next book.
This is the 4th book in the Lost and Found Inc Series and believe it or not, they keep getting better! This is Jake and Holly's story and occurs 2 years after the last book. Jake is working on his aunt's farm and Holly is a nurse. Both end up in a town devastated by storms and flooding. Jake ends up taking Holly into hiding to save her life. (You will have to read the book to find out why 😊.) Their attraction to each other grows the longer they're together but can Jake forgive himself for what he did? Read this fantastic book and find out.
When i started this book I thought no not Holly again , she has gone through so much already. But we know to find your hea you have to suffer. This is the best book of this series so far. There is sadness and happiness and anticipation it is one rush of emotions from beginning to end. The chemistry is there, the characters are wonderful the backing and bantering between the guys is hilarious. I love this series I highly recommend this whole series and start at the beginning with book 1 otherwise you miss the connections.
Two well trained military guys get taken out by the bad guy with two bullets, but they don't get any off on him? Dumb people invite a random stranger into the compound while they're on the lookout for the killer? Water breaks and seconds later pushing contractions? Driving around Texas like you can get from Dallas to south Texas in no time? Demolishing a burned out barn in a day or two and burying the remains? This novel really requires way too much suspension of reality.
