Aidan MacGrigor has always known his place in life. He was raised to understand his duty to his brother and laird, to king and country - and the welfare of the clan comes first. Aidan's world is that of shadows and intrigue, of whispered secrets so powerful they can bring death if overheard; of truths so profound they can raise kings; of lies so treacherous they can topple empires.

He is the Hawk, and in the midst of Longshanks's war against the Bruce, intrigue is Aidan's currency - and he is a wealthy man. His birds softly sing their songs of information, and Aidan uses them to strengthen Clan MacGrigor. Though his life is one of solitude, he has come to savor the freedom it affords him, even if it means sacrificing the joy of having a wife and family of his own. He is resigned to his lot in life . . . until fate sends a bruised and battered sparrow his way and his instinct to love and protect takes over . . .

Kenna MacLean has known nothing but hatred and brutality at the hands of men. A pawn in her father's bid for power and control, she yearns for a life of her own choosing, and she gets her chance when her wedding train is ambushed by brigands. Running for her life with her maid and a babe in tow, she stumbles into one of Aidan's nests and embraces the opportunity to reinvent herself and start life anew. Life as one of Aidan's birds is more rewarding than she could have imagined, even if the handsome Hawk she has come to love can never be hers.

But as the shadows grow darker and both English and Scottish men scour the countryside in search of a rumored connection to the English crown that could change the entire balance of two nations at war, Aidan and Kenna will have to outwit, outrun, and outplay not one but two enemies to protect their loved ones and their beloved Scotland. Despite doubt and fear, neither can deny the strengthening force drawing them together, but Fate, it seems, has Her own plans. As their enemies close in, Aidan willingly sacrifices everything so his little sparrow might survive. But Kenna is no longer a wounded bird with broken wings. She answers the challenge, but can she act quickly enough to save the life of the man she loves, and the future she is determined they will share, before its too late?

I really enjoyed this book. I finished it in a day. Fast read but not a simple one.
I enjoyed both Aidan's and Kenna's story. Although the story was about Aidan, I actually enjoyed Kenna more.
The story kept you in suspense but did move along.
My only complaint but not enough to knock off a star is the use of historical names and nicknames but they are not in the story. The background is needed to move the story but I always get lost in the background.
I can't wait to see when the next story comes out. I hope it will continue the story of Collen and Maira.

I really enjoyed reading this book and it made me want to go back to read the other two book in the series. I loved how Aidan was as a gentle and honorable man and how Kenna opened up after being freed from her father. I look forward to reading another on of this author's books.

I loved this story. It has so much history I felt like I was living in Scotland during the time of the Bruce and Longshanks. Totally recommend it. About to read book 4 and cannot wait.

Another great story from Kathryn Loch. I love this well-written series both because her characters are wonderfully developed and because she obviously has a good editor. Aidan and Kenna are as easy to enjoy as were Ronan and Lia.

I was lucky enough and got this book in a boxed set of the entire series for the same price as just one. The characters are likable and I was intrigued by the Hawk. His inheritance is taken from by Robert the Bruce, in later years when hawk believes himself in love the fact that he has nothing to offer is thrown back in his face. He hardens his heart and swears he will never give that part of himself again. He has vested his time creating his birds as he calls it. It is a group of spies. The second book develops his background but even though I've never read book 2 this book will not leave you scratching your head.

Kenna MacLean is on her way to meet with her betrothed when it is intercepted and she is abducted. She comes from an abusive father and now is faced with the real possibility of rape and further beatings. Aidan does not disappoint as he comes to her aid and recruits her as one of his own. He gives her the name Sparrow and has her trained by his best, the Raven. While I enjoyed the couple together it is a stretched out affair because there is a bigger plot at work. For all intent and purposes it appears she is the target and is still being pursued repeatedly but as the story unfolds there is a much bigger twist to the story. For me it drew your attention away from Aidan and Kenna because you are following this suspenseful side of the intrigue. It was not as endearing as I have found some of her other books and by the end their story is completed but the sub plot sets up for book 4. I am not sure when I will venture on to that book because I don't truly enjoy a book that steals from the couple. There is one love scene and the H is not written as a womanizer. Enjoy!!

I struggled with this one. As the author notes she had difficulty writing this one because the main character was 'perfect'.. Unfortunately, this came through to the reader. Shame really as I was looking forward to it.
