Revised and updated edition of this classic work. Fascinating and meticulously researched biographies of 40 women who served, nursed, or aided the soldiers after the battle of Gettysburg. The participation of these women was critical to the survival of many soldiers.
This book was a slow go - and really had very little to do with the battle of Gettysburg. It seems that the only requirement for being included in this book was that you had to pass through Gettysburg around the time of the battle. So many interesting women lived in Gettysburg during the battle and its aftermath. I would much rather read their stories than those of the army and independent nurses who spent only a few weeks - or a few days - on the battlefield.
