Though Sarah Longford's days were marked by the sorrow of an ancient curse, her nights were filled with dreams of a life of privilege and passion. A life she had known in another time and another body.
Yet fate had allowed her to live again as the tempestuous Bianca, a woman who had sold herself in marriage, only to discover she had made a terrible mistake. And now it was up to her to prevent the bloodshed, and save the life of her beloved Alessio.
Nina Gettler was born in Salzburg, Austria, home to Mozart and the Von Trapp family. She is of Russian descent, whose family tree includes the Stroganoff family, Count Zhubov, who is reputed to have been Catherine the Great's last lover, and several other interesting historical characters. She grew up in Massachusetts, USA, and after spending her first two years of college in Austria, graduated from the University of Massachusetts with a B.A. in French and an M.A. in German.
Returning to Austria in 1970, Nina worked for sixteen years as a translator for Russian, French and Italian before turning to writing full-time. Her life-long interest in history and her fluency in several languages has been of great help in the in-depth research she does for her books, which includes traveling to where the stories are set. After spending 25 years in Austria, she relocated to Seattle in July 1995 on the strength of a gut feeling that this was the right place for her to go.
Nina Beaumont’s “Twice Upon Time” Time Travel set in Renaissance Italy is Book 2 in the Magic in Italy Historical Romance Series. As this is only my second book by this wonderful author I must say I an extremely delighted to have found her!
Sarah Longford’s life in Victorian London is so much different than the passion filled nights that haunt her dreams night after night as long as she could remember. She knew instinctively that this had once been her life. But how could it be so? As a companion to Mrs Sheridan she had saved all of her earning for a trip to Florence, a trip with the hope of discovering the origin of her these dreams.
The author has written a beautiful story that transcends time and space. Sarah’s journey was one of mystery, love and the beautiful opportunity to go back and correct the sins of the past. Alessio and Bianca’s story held me spellbound until the end. I can’t help but wonder where Sarah‘s happiness lies. Beautifully written, and wonderfully told!
Thank you Ms. Beaumont for this compelling, entertaining and engaging story of love so powerful and the gift to make right our mistakes.
This book was a very odd Time Travel Romance as it was barely that genre. We're first introduced to Sarah, a young woman who has been plagued with dreams and visions of a story of 2 star-crossed lovers who were murdered when the woman's husband finds she's been unfaithful. Sarah is transported back in time into the body of Bianca, a beautiful but selfish woman who is betrothed to a rich but crippled man while she yearns for his broke but handsome brother. The second she enters Bianca's body, Sarah ceases to exist and Bianca becomes out heroine. And Sarah is never seen again. Bianca begins to experience visions of a future which see herself and Alessio dead by Ugo's hand and from other characters view point, Bianca becomes less of a temptress who cares not for the consequences of allowing the courtship of another man and more reserved. She stops stringing Alessio along and is worried that her course of action will bring the vision of death to reality. Problem is, this kinder and more reserved Bianco only serves to drive Alessio crazy with desire. It pushes him to realize he loves this woman and it's not just sex.
Bianca, who also comes to love Alessio, knows she can't marry Ugo without bringing forth the prophecy. But her relationship to Alessio is plagued with distrust and Ugo is still a threat because of Bianca's scorned love.
I found this book very difficult to read and become invested in. It was not badly written, just very dramatic and drawn out. I couldn't figure out what the point was supposed to be. Alessio was a child who threw a tantrum if Bianca denied him and Bianca was a tease who didn't make good decisions. I didn't particularly enjoy either as a characters. I try not to dislike a book because if wasn't exactly what I wanted from it but after reading this book, you can't deny it would have been a more compelling story if Bianca found that Ugo, the man who was always depicted as a crippled villain, was actually the hero and that Alessio, the handsome forbidden love, was the asshole. That would have been the better plot. But instead, this book was without twists and turns and therefore, it got boring quickly.
The second book in the Magic in Italy Historical Romance Series. This is Sarah Longford and Alessio's story, of a woman going back in time to correct something from her past. I enjoyed reading. I received a copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
