Murder on the Cornish Coast

Rate this book
A bright blue sky, a glamorous boating party, an English manor house on the Cornish cliffs… and surely not another murder! Get Kitty Underhay on the case!

Cornwall, 1937. Kitty Underhay has been called to investigate some fishy goings-on in the beautiful coastal village of St Mawes. The body of Lady Cordelia Hedges’ beloved father was found floating in the sea, and shortly afterwards Cordelia herself was almost killed…

Determined to piece together the puzzle, Kitty spends her first evening in the Cornish bay at one of Cordelia’s lavish parties. But she’s not just soaking up the idyllic surroundings with her husband Matt, she’s at the party to get to know those closest to their host. The sleuthing duo quickly realise they’re in unchartered waters and this could be their toughest case yet.

Later that evening, a scream wakes Kitty in the middle of the night: Lady Cordelia is sitting bolt upright in bed, swearing someone has been in her room. As Bertie the dog retrieves a knife from behind the curtain, Kitty’s list of suspects grows: could the murderer be Cordelia’s suspicious stepsister, her spoiled future mother-in-law, or someone even closer to home…?

Then a house guest eats a poisoned chocolate from a box addressed to Cordelia and dies. This latest tragedy helps Kitty to make progress in her investigations at last. But is Kitty floundering? Will she be able to solve this case before someone else gets hurt, or will Kitty end up in a watery grave?

Fans of Agatha Christie, T.E. Kinsey and Lee Strauss will adore this utterly charming murder mystery. The perfect treat for cozy crime fans!

The nineteenth book in the Miss Underhay Mystery series and I have read them all. I am now firm friends with Matt and Kitty and look forward to all the cases they work on together as Private Investigators

It is Cornwall in 1937 and Kitty Underhay is visiting St. Mawes with her husband Matt. They have been hired to help Lady Cordelia Hedges whose father has been murdered and who now believes she is the next target. Things become very strange and extremely confusing before they are able to solve the mystery. I found that I had very good idea about who it was but had no idea why.

Another beautiful cover wrapped around an excellent mystery in this great series. Keep them coming!

Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this book.

It was 1937 in Cornwall when Kitty was visited by Lady Cordelia Hedges who had been seriously injured a few months prior, at the same time her father had been murdered. Now she was sure someone was trying to kill her. Her memory of the time was broken; her psychologist was trying to help Cordelia regain her memories so perhaps they could discover who the killer was. Cordelia invited Kitty and Matt to the small village of St Mawes, where it all took place; her idea was being in the familiar area might jog those memories free.

As Kitty and Matt mingled with the other guests, who were also at the event where Sir Victor was killed, they could feel the tension in the air. Everyone knew what the aim was, but no one seemed comfortable with it. Would they find the killer before it was too late?

Murder on the Cornish Coast is the 19th in the Miss Underhay series by Helena Dixon and it was brilliant! The twist at the end was not something I saw coming! Kitty, Matt and their bulldog, Bertie, are very familiar characters; it's like catching up with old friends each episode. I'm loving the series, and long may it continue! Highly recommended.

With thanks to NetGalley & Bookouture for my digital ARC to read and review.

This was another good entry in the Miss Underhay mystery series. This time, Kitty and Matt are hired to solve a mystery by a troubled young woman, Lady Cordelia. Cordelia was seriously injured and her father murdered after a party. Cordelia lost all memories of the event, but is undergoing therapy to try and recall her attack. However, someone seems to want to stop her as she believes she is the victim of several recent attempted murders.

Kitty, Matt, and their dog Bertie head off to a house party in Cornwall to which all of those key members of the original party have been invited. The atmosphere among the guests troubles both Matt and Kitty, and soon further attempts on Cordelia's life, as well as another murder, occur. Everyone at the house party seems to have reason to want Cordelia dead. I found the mystery interesting. Each time I thought I knew who had done it, something was uncovered indicating they were most likely innocent.

In addition to the main mystery, there's also a minor thread picked up from the previous book dating back to Matt's service in the war. I'm not sure if the next book will focus on that, or if it will continue to be a minor thread in a few additoinal books. No matter what, I look forward to reading the next in the series.

This series has to be one of my all-time favourites and I'm always eager to get my hands on a new mystery starring Kitty and her husband Matt. This time they're contacted by a Lady Cordelia who thinks that someone is now trying to kill her too after failing to do so the same night her father was murdered. They head to Cornwall to recover Lady Cordelia's memory and get to the bottom of what really happened that night.

Yet another rip roaring mystery from Helena Dixon and a great addition to this brilliant series!
The mystery was certainly a puzzling one and kept me guessing. As usual, Kitty and Matt ending up in some peril but emerging mostly unscathed.

I loved the fact that Bertie, their adorable dog, got a starring role in this book. It always adds to the fun when there's a pet involved with the sleuthing.

There's some new intrigue to do with a person from Matt's past that is running as a secondary storyline through this story and the last and I'm itching to see what happens next.

I don't think I'll ever get sick of these mysteries and I'm already looking forward to book twenty!

After being seriously injured in an attack that left her father dead, Lady Cordelia Hedges turns to Kitty and Matt Bryant's detective agency to help her find out what happened. Suffering flashbacks and, more worryingly, further attacks on her life, Lady Cordelia insists on them accompanying her to the scene of the crime at the family's home in the small Cornish fishing village of St Mawes. Unfortunately, it seems someone is equally determined to ensure the case remains unsolved, placing both the Bryants and their client in ever increasing danger!

In book nineteen of the Miss Underhay Mystery Series, the author is definitely channelling her inner Agatha! It is a brilliant story with all the red herrings, twists, and turns you would expect from both authors. There is also a second case bubbling away in the background, which I am looking forward to getting more involved with in book twenty.

I was able to read an advanced copy of this thanks to NetGalley and the publishers, Bookouture, but the opinions expressed are my own. This is a brilliantly satisfying read that I thoroughly enjoyed.

one of my favorite authors, Helena Dixon writes nice short cozies with good character development. From all her books, this one had a slight departure in her formula for who the culprit is, and you can kinda guess (if you are familiar with her writing style). Still, it does not detract from a good story.

☕ Review: Murder on the Cornish Coast

💗Rate: 5 Stars!!

📖Praise: Helena Dixon succeeds once again! Above all mystery bookmarks! Above all mystery loving hearts! Helena Dixon's books are where you want to start! I was so excited to read Matt and Kitty's next adventure! We last saw them in New York! Now they are in the quaint little Cornish coast! Kitty and Matt are asked by a troubled young woman who has amnesia to help find her father's killer! Gasp!! (I totally imaged even Agatha Christie and Nancy Drew biting their nails wondering what was going to happen next! Lol)

💗Matt and kitty are ever the same quirky and very attentive investigators! They use their capabilities in both gathering information and working as a team to embody an unstoppable force and finding the killer!

💄Book 19 was definitely a great treat! As are all of Helena's books! There was something extra quirky about this one! We have many people gathered in one Cornish country mansion who have every motive and every opportunity for trying to hurt our young lady who has amnesia. Helena has the puzzle gathering skills of Sherlock Holmes and she truly brought this book home!

🥞I really love how protective Matt is of Kitty in every book! And how she will do absolutely anything for her husband! Another twist to this tale was not only did someone murder this poor woman's father but now they're trying to murder her! I was truly on the edge of my seat as if I was in an old fashioned movie theater and there was a black and white film right in front of me!

🍭Helena as always is very descriptive when describing the food scenes! The food seems truly added to solving every mystery. From every rich jelly-filled scone, a cup of tea with extra sugar because someone is nervous, or a bowl of lemon meringue to top the night off in the book was something sweet! Helena engages everybody with everyday tasks in the book that mixed with the characters life.

🍨I love how there was a second mystery! Matt is trying to find a long lost War friend! Past and present meet together and with Kitty by Matt's side he feels truly invincible!

🍰Characters: All the characters were truly intriguing and inviting with their mannerisms and constant dialogue. One moment I can't believe the character admits to something. And the next minute you find out they're lying! Each character is like a beautiful book. They are beautiful on the outside with their shiny new covers and glossy lettering. But on the inside Helena creates them to be full of hidden words and codes. When I was given the opportunity to read this beautiful story early I couldn't contain my mystery loving heart bursting with glee! Finding out how all the characters are doing and how they've gone on with their lives since book 18 makes me feel as if I'm keeping up with some old ink to pen friends.

🧁Trope: Truly Book 19 had me thinking of all the future mysteries that our dear couple will solve! I have even gone back to reading book 1!! Any book, especially a mystery book that makes you want to reread the series again. Is a series truly worth always investing in completely!!

Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for the opportunity to read "Murder on the Cornish Coast" in exchange for my honest opinion.

This nineteenth book in the Miss Underhay series starts with an article in the Torbay Herald dated August 1936. There was a murder at St. Mawes in Cornwall. Sir Victor Hedges an MP was murdered, speculation in that it was a robbery gone wrong because his pocket watch is missing.

The next article is from September 1936 and Lady Cordelia Hedges who was also injured when her father was killed is recovering. No arrest yet.

The story continues in March 1937 when Kitty Bryant finds a new client in Lady Cordelia who happens to be an old acquaintance of her cousin Lucy. She wants Kitty and Matt to go to Highcliffe Hall their holiday house to see if they can figure out what happened to her father and her. Lady Cordelia had forgotten her purse on the boat and they went back together to get it, her next memory is waking up in the hospital. She's been trying therapy to remember what happened. Also at the house are her step-sister Rachel, step-mother Iolanthe, Digby White (family accountant), Nathan Crosse (Cordelia's fiancé), his mother Mildred and Dr. Moore. She's assembled the same people who were there the night of Rachel's 21st birthday party.

She claims her life is in danger - that someone pushed her down the stairs and tampered with her medicine at her London home. Now someone else has been killed at the house with a box of chocolates meant for Lady Cordelia.

Sadly Inspector Lewis has been seconded from Exeter and Devon to the Cornwall Constabulary. Though he appears much less annoying in this story. He makes an arrest but does he have the right suspect? There is a shocking twist at the end that the reader will not see coming. All the answers are revealed once Kitty figures out what happened. Of course, Kitty is in danger again, as always.

At the same time Matt is also working on the mysterious case of Redvers Palmerston. Who he saw when he and Kitty were leaving the ship after returning from America. Only Redvers is dead. His widow has also seen him. Her son Peter had his father's things and now they have been stolen. Can the ghost of a dead man do these things? It appears that the adventure will continue in the next story.

The star of this book was Bertie, who was invaluable help to Kitty and Matt.

Murder on the Cornish Coast is the 19th book in the Miss Underhay Mysteries and Helena Dixon is still coming up with interesting and enjoyable plots. Kitty's cousin refers her friend to Kitty and Matt to investigate the murder of her father and the attack on her several months earlier. Lady Cordelia Hedges lost her memory after a serious head injury and the attack on her and her father is still unsolved. Kitty and Matt agree to take on the case and head to the beautiful coastal village of St Mawes to stay at the Hedge's manor house. All the guests that were there at the time of the attack will once again be in attendance. With other attacks on Lady Cordelia and her doctor planning to hypnotize her to see if she can remember what happened, Matt and Kitty are up against time as it appears the killer is getting worried and trying to finish the job on Lady Cordelia.

This was a great mystery. As I got to know each of the guests and residents it became apparent that everyone except Lady Iolanthe was a suspect and had motive. The murder took place following Rachel's birthday party. Rachel is Cordelia's step-sister and is jealous of Cordelia. Although it is a beautiful setting, Matt and Kitty spend most of their time at the manor house. Their dog, Bertie, is also with them and spends a lot of time in the kitchens. This gives Kitty a chance to visit him and subtly question the staff to get information that the police might not be aware of. They work with the Inspector that they don't like very much, but he was much better with them in this book. There is a second case that Matt is working on that has to do with a man that he was sure had died from injuries in the war, but he may have risen from the dead? This was a well plotted story with great characters. I loved trying to solve this one with Matt and Kitty, but every time I thought I had it figured out, I was pushed in another direction. I absolutely love Matt and Kitty as a married couple and partners in the investigation company. They complement one another and always figure out the crime and find the culprit. Another excellent addition to this series.

An unsolved murder, a daughter left battered with little recall of the events and a man who should be dead, but it would seem may not be, sees Kitty Bryant and her husband Matt become deeply involved in a situation that just seems to get more complicated by the hour, in Murder on the Cornish Coast, another complex murder from Helena Dixon.
Following on from Matt and Kitty’s return to England from New York, Matt decides he needs to further investigate the death of his Army friend Redvers Palmerston, a man whose funeral he had attended. He is positive he saw him in the waiting crowd when their ship docked.
Meanwhile Kitty has a visit from a distressed young lady, Lady Cordelia Hedges, who is convinced someone is trying to kill her. Her father, Sir Victor Hugo had been murdered at St Mawes and she had also been viciously attacked on the same night. No one has been arrested for either incident.
She is looking for answers and invites Matt and Kitty to a weekend event at Highcliffe Hall to mark her return to the place where she was attacked. Her therapist thinks it could help her unlock memories of the terrible events that occurred there.
But all is far from what it seems at Highcliffe Hall, with secrets apparently being kept, personalities clashing and a string of events occurring that make absolutely no sense at all.
Kitty and Matt find they have no easy answers. Kitty eventually decides perhaps the downstairs staff are able to share some information that may help, as servants know almost everything that goes on, even behind closed doors!
Matt considers this a somewhat drastic step, but knows once Kitty is determined to follow instinct, it is best to let her get on with the task. When another murder occurs, Kitty begins to think that perhaps there may be a clue in what has tragically occurred.
Murder on the Cornish Coast book 19 in the Miss Underhay Mystery series is an intriguing and intricate murder mystery that keeps the killer well-hidden and will keep you guessing who did it, until the final tragic reveal.

Murder on the Cornish Coast is the nineteenth book in Helena Dixon’s Miss Underhay mystery series. I only discovered the series recently and have read three books in it now. The books stand on their own fine. There’s some history alluded to, but she fills in enough that I’m not lost, even this far in.

In Murder on the Cornish Coast, it’s 1937, and Kitty and her husband Matt are hired by Lady Cordelia Hedges, who believes someone is trying to kill her. Several months before, she was attacked and her father was killed. Due to a head injury, she has no memory of the event. Since coming home, someone has tried to push her down the stairs, and she found ground glass in her medication. Lady Cordelia desperately wants to remember so she can point the finger at whoever killed her father. She believes someone wants to kill her before her memory can return.

Lady Cordelia came up with the idea of going back to the family home in St. Mawes, where the attack occurred. She’s hoping that being there again will jar something loose in her brain. She’s also invited everyone who was there the night of the attack, thinking that one of them is the killer. She asks Kitty and Matt to be there as well.

This sets up a good cozy mystery in the style of Agatha Christie. All of the suspects are gathered together under one roof and observed as events take place. All of the characters seem to have a possible motive. Kitty and Matt interact with all of them and seem to be no closer to finding out who is behind the attack when there’s another murder. Was the killer trying to silence Lady Cordelia and caught someone else by mistake? Or was the newly deceased the target for some unknown reason?

Helena Dixon brings Kitty Underhay back for another stylish and enthralling adventure in Murder on the Cornish Coast.

Kitty and her husband Matt find themselves heading to the Cornish village of St Mawes to investigate some nefarious goings-on. Lady Cordelia Hedge’s father met a tragic end in the sea and Cordelia herself was almost killed. On her first evening, during one of Cordelia’s lavish parties, Kitty sits and observes as she wonders which one of her guests would go to such desperate lengths to get rid of her. Later on in the evening, a scream wakes Kitty in the middle of the night: Cordelia is completely beside herself convinced that someone has been in her room – a suspicion that is confirmed by Bertie the dog retrieving a knife from behind the curtain…

A dangerous enemy is clearly hiding in plain sight and the more she investigates, the more Kitty realises that there are no shortage of suspects with their own reasons for wanting Cordelia dead. Why is her stepsister acting so suspiciously? Might the killer be her future mother-in-law? Or could it be someone even closer to home? When a guest eats a poisoned chocolate addressed to Cordelia and dies, Kitty needs to act fast and find the killer – before she runs out of time.

Historical cozy mystery fans have a treat in store for them with Murder on the Cornish Coast. Fun, exciting and unpredictable, Murder on the Cornish Coast is a terrific whodunnit by Helena Dixon that readers will struggle to put down and find hard to resist. Clever, compelling and guaranteed to keep readers guessing, Murder on the Cornish Coast is another winner from Helena Dixon.

This was my first book by this author and the one thing I will say is, though there are eighteen books before this one, I didn't feel like I needed to read the previous books to quickly grasp the history of the couple.

With that said, this book was soo very predictable, it was almost boring. There was no guessing needed. My first instinct as to who the culprit was, (at less than 10% in), was correct.

The 2 star rating is because of the predictability and the very disappointing ending.

Though it was predictable, i listened to the entire book, because i wanted to know why.

This is not a fast paced book. This is not a terribly creative book. This is not the type of mystery that will have you guessing until the very end, and this is not a book with any sort of twist. If that is what you are looking for, find another book.

The one thing that annoyed me and it annoys me in any book, is where an author uses the real name of a drug/illness, disease or treatment, but then twists it to suit their narrative, rather than using actual facts. In this book, it's Regression Therapy.

In this novel it's the 1930s. Hypnotherapy became a bigger thing in the 1950s but Regression Therapy wasn't even a thing until the late 1970s, early 1980s. So to have this 1930s novel, pull in all these newer techniques and speech of regression therapy just threw me. It created drama between the doctors that was so quickly snuffed out after one session, it almost made me suspect one of them as being an accomplice.

I will say, if you don't realize who the culprit is by the time of the regression therapy session, you are not listening close enough.

Kitty Underhay and her husband, Matt, are preparing for another investigation and will be traveling to St. Mawes. Kitty will be handling the majority of the tasks, as Matt is already involved in another investigation. Kitty was contacted by Lady Cordelia Hedges, who is very distraught and anxious as she narrowly escaped death after her father’s passing.

Cordelia’s family dynamics are a bit complicated. Her father remarried, leaving her with a stepmother and stepsister. Also, she’s engaged, and her family and fiancé are among the guests at a glamorous party. This setting provides Kitty with the perfect opportunity to discreetly observe the surroundings and search for answers.

However, Cordelia experiences a terror that has her screaming late into the night. Then, another murder takes place. What Kitty clearly sees is that there are very few suspects as to the crimes taking place, so she takes extra notice of the guests present.

What another delightfully intriguing mystery to unravel! Nineteen books into this series, and it remains as fresh and captivating as ever. I adore both Kitty and Matt, and of course, their lovable bulldog, Bertie. I also appreciate how the author subtly mentions Matt’s PTSD, even though it wasn’t officially diagnosed at the time. I mention this because I’m particularly moved by Kitty’s tender care for Matt during his episodes. My Kindle is already hinting at my eagerness for book twenty.

Many thanks to Bookouture and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.

Murder on the Cornish Coast by Helena Dixon is a Miss Underhay mystery. Kitty and Matt are attending a house party in Cornwall at the behest of Kitty’s cousin, Lucy. It was a very sad affair: Sir Victor Hedges had been attacked and killed near the docks the previous fall, and his daughter, Cordelia, their client, had been beaten severely. There was no suspect and Cordelia had no memory of what had happened. They and the rest of the entourage had been attending a birthday party for Cordelia’s stepsister, Rachel, on a yacht. Now Cordelia had determined to return and see if it could jog any memories loose. She had been under the care of a very modern doctor who used hypnotherapy in an attempt to retrieve memories, and had suggested the return.

Kitty and Matt are a wonderful couple, well-written, smart, and likable. Since their marriage they had been working as private detectives and appear to be making a go of it. They worked together, but just as often, apart. Kitty had a knack that was undeniable and was able to talk to people that Matt could not. The mystery was a good one, with a very sad end. The whole thing was sad, really: Cordelia’s father was dead and, a secret as yet, her stepmother was dying. As Kitty and Matt delved into sources the police had neglected, the picture became clear; the solution I had not guessed at. It was, as always an enjoyable read.

Kitty and Matt go down to Cornwall to help Lady Cordelia, who is friends with Kitty’s cousin Lucy. Having been injured in an attack that left her father dead, Cordelia is worried that someone is now trying to kill her as her memories of the night begin to return…

This is a good series for those who like a cosy historical mystery with the good guys prevailing. As it’s in Cornwall this time, there’s only a passing mention of Grams and Mrs C at the start, before Kitty and Matt head off to Cornwall with Bertie the dog (who may have a future role as a police dog after this book!). All the bits you usually like about this series are here again (albeit not the local characters), and Matt thankfully seems to have cured himself of addressing everyone as sir whenever he asks even a minor question - phew! I did suspect several characters of having been the killer, including the one who actually turned out to have dunnit, yay.

Only tiny niggle - and it’s not to do with the story as such - but can we please lose the summaries of every book in the series at the end of the book? It’s not a long book to start with, and having the mystery wrap up at 80% because there’s 18 books to remind you about, means this book weighs in at a shade over 200 pages maybe. We already have a list of the titles at the beginning.

I received a free ARC copy of this via NetGalley and the publishers Bookouture, in return for an unbiased review.

Kitty has been asked to investigate some fishy goings-on in the beautiful coastal village of St Mawes. The body of Lady Cordelia Hedges’ beloved father was found floating in the sea, and shortly afterwards Cordelia herself was almost killed. Determined to piece together the puzzle, Kitty & Matt travel to Cornwall. Later that evening, a scream wakes Kitty in the middle of the night: Lady Cordelia is sitting bolt upright in bed, swearing someone has been in her room. As Bertie the dog retrieves a knife from behind the curtain, Kitty’s list of suspects grows. Then a house guest eats a poisoned chocolate from a box addressed to Cordelia and dies. Matt is also investigating a more personal case
The nineteenth book in the series & it’s still as fresh as the first. I love both Matt & Kitty & love how both their personal & business relationships have blossomed throughout the series. Another intriguing case, there were twists, turns & red herrings, whilst I whittled it down to two of the house guests I couldn’t work out which one it was or the reasons why. Then there was Matt’s case, he made some progress but there’s still plenty to find out especially as it happened so long ago. I love this series & was engrossed in the book & read it in two sittings

Stars: 4⭐️

Genre: Murder Mystery

Publication date : February 20, 2025

This is the 19th book in the Miss Underhay Mystery series it can be read as a stand alone as it doesn’t correspond to the following books.

This book was light and fluffy. We follow kitty and her husband Matt as they work on 2 different cases. One involving a murder of a father and an injured daughter, the daughter happens to be a friend of kitty’s cousin and a personal case locating one of Matt’s friends from WW1 who he discovered is not actually dead.

The professional case of the daughter and father takes kitty and Matt to the Cornish coast where we learn that not only did the father die but, now someone is trying to also finish their job off by killing the daughter and kitty and Matt have to figure it out before it is too late.

I love kitty’s personality and determination this is what drew me into this book, I was also drawn in to how protective Matt is over Kitty and how kitty would do just about anything for her husband. This is what made the book light and fluffy.

Definitely worth the 4 star read ⭐️

In MURDER ON THE CORNISH COAST by Helena Dixon, Lady Cordelia Hedges visits Kitty (Underhay) Bryant at Torbay Private Investigation Services that is owned and operated by Kitty and her husband, Captain Matt Bryant. Lady Cordelia seeks Kitty’s investigative services to solve the mystery of Sir Victor Hedges’ murder that occurred outside Highcliffe Hall, the Hedges holiday house where the Hedges family met to celebrate the 21st birthday of Lady Cordelia’s stepsister. Lady Cordelia, who suffered a concussion and memory loss at the same time her father had been murdered, also believes she is being threatened. How is Kitty going to solve the mystery of Victor’s murder? Is Cordelia in danger? I read on to see what happens.

I enjoy catching up with Kitty and Matt in this historical cozy mystery. The plot is well constructed, and the characters are interesting to read about. I have a warm feeling, despite the intriguing mystery, whenever I read an Helena Dixon novel. I look forward to reading the next book in the series (A Miss Underhay Mystery). Thank you, Bookouture and NetGalley, for the chance to read and review an advance reader copy of MURDER ON THE CORNISH COAST.

A friend asks Kitty and Matt to come to the family country home on the Cornish coast to help solve the matter of what happened when her father was killed and she developed post traumatic amnesia. The reason for haste is that there seems to have been an attempt on the woman's life. So Kitty and Matt pack up with their little spaniel and head off. Once there, the good boy finds a knife in the room of the potential victim, charms the residents and staff of the home, and cadges treats whenever he can. Meanwhile, the is another murder and their constabulary nemesis gets called in to help the local law. There's lots more, too!
This is hardly an unbiased review as I really love the Missy Underhay series.

This was my first time reading any of the books in this series as I was given an advanced reader copy for free for my honest review. I enjoyed the plot of this book , Sir Victor gets murdered and his daughter Lady Cornelia gets seriously injured in the attack, leaving her memory of the evening quite hazy. As memories come back to her, things begin to happen to her and she believes her life is in danger. Lady Cordelia enlists the service of Kitty and Captain Matt Bryant private investigators to find out who killed her father and who is trying to kill her. Although this is my first time reading this series, I am giving it 4 stars because it kept my attention and at times I felt as though I was right along side of Kitty and Matt as they dove into the details of this crime. I want to now go back and read the first 17 books in this series. Helena Dixon you made this Canadian girl feel as though she skipped the 10 hour flight and jet lag to get a first hand glimpse of the beauty England has to offer, minus the murder.

The Miss Underhay Mysteries by Helena Dixon are some of my all time favourite cosy crimes. So when a chance to review Murder on the Cornish Coast came up, I jumped on it.

This is the 19th book in the series, and this time Kitty and Matt (and Bertie, of course) are off to Cornwall to help Lady Cordelia Hedges try and work out both what happened when her father was murdered a few months earlier, and who is trying to kill her now. They are also investigating a mysterious reappearance from Matt’s past.

I very much enjoyed visiting the Cornish coast, and Highcliffe Hall. A real sense of the village right on the shore came through, as well as the large house just outside it.

There were an interesting collection of characters staying at Highcliffe Hall, any one of whom could be the murderer. It was great fun trying to work out who the culprit was, alongside Kitty and Matt.

Overall, this was another fascinating mystery with favourite characters.

I was given a copy of this book, my opinions are my own.

Another hugely successful book in this lovely cozy crime series. In this book we follow Kitty and husband Matt to visit a Cornish family who are struggling after a death in the family. The father of this family was found dead in the water following a party for his step daughter and his own daughter has vowed to find the killer.

The characters are like welcoming back old friends, the lovely relationship between the couple is a delight to follow and their endeavours as private investigators are both fun and mysterious. The writing style is very good cozy crime and the plot flows easily, uncovering the threads to find the perpetrators.

Highly recommended as a stand alone but I feel best read as a series.

Thank you to Netgalley, the author and the publisher for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.

I had been losing interest in this series but this book has been one of the best in a while. Kitty and Matt are working on 2 different intriguing mysteries at the same time. One is personal to Matt, trying to discover if a former soldier he knew in WWI who “died” is actually alive. He meets with various family members and hospital workers to determine if it’s possible. Kitty is asked to investigate for a friend of her cousin, Lucy. She and Matt travel to stay with the family of Cordelia who was injured last summer and her father killed with no leads or suspects. Cordelia wants to travel back to the scene of the incident to see if it will bring back memories of what happened that lay buried in her subconscious. An array of characters/suspects kept me guessing for most of the book.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for selecting me to read an advanced copy of the book.

I always loved how Helena Dixon pays homage to Golden Age mysteries and plays with the tropes using them to deliver compelling and entertaining historical cozy mysteries
Kitty and Matt are sort of friend I'm always happy to meet and catch up with them. Bertie is as cute as always.
There's a dark undercurrent in this mystery, there's betrayal, dysfunctional family relationships, and strong emotions. Golden Age mysteries are often quite dark and full of psychological insight into the mind and the actions of the characters
Ms Dixon plays with the different tones and the story never drags or bores.
There's a subplot that is quite intriguing and I can't wait to read the next story.
Read it and have fun, it's highly recommended
Many thanks to Bookouture for this digital copy, all opinions are mine

This was fun - another “who killed who?” set in pre-WWII England. A very likable husband and wife sleuthing team, with their dog in tow, attempt to uncover the “who” and help a Lady recover her memory in the hopes of moving the mystery and story along. So many disagreeable people, so many ways to turn this story around and on its head. So many people who could have done it and so many reasons why. Just enough line is laid out to grab onto and try to figure it out.

This was my first foray into the Miss Underhay Mysteries and it while it is #19 in the series I had no problem with whatever had happened before. Well worth the time and nice to have another back-up series while I wait for the next Verity Bright/Eleanor Swift installment. Thanks to Bookoutre and NetGalley for a copy.

Matt and Kitty are hired to investigate the unsolved death of a nobleman. The investigation takes them to Cornwall, located in the southwestern part of England. Lady Cordelia, the nobleman’s daughter, who was injured and hospitalized in the incident that killed her father, wants to regain her memory of that fateful night and has gathered all the people who were with her at that time, for a house party at the site of the tragedy. Matt and Kitty are introduced as Lady Cordelia’s friends. They watch as Lady Cordelia’s fiance, her step-mother and step-sister, the family doctor, and the family’s financial advisor try to help her regain her memory. I was once again stunned when the killer was revealed.

Thank you so much to NetGalley and Helena Dixon for providing me with a complimentary digital ARC for Murder on the Cornish Coast coming out February 20, 2025. The honest opinions expressed in this review are my own.

I really love this series! The time period is really fun. It reminds me a lot of Agatha Christie novels. I think Kitty and Matt are a really dynamic duo and I love the way they support each other. I think the setting was perfect. I would definitely read more books in this series!

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys cozy mysteries!

Cornwall 1937. A beautiful village St Maws but Lady Cordelia’s father’s body was found murdered just dumped in the water and Cordelia herself badly injured, discovered in the Nick of time by her fiancée.

Invited by Cordelia to investigate the crime, Kitty and her husband Matt try to decipher whom amongst the guests is responsible. Who had the means and motives, especially since threats to Lady Cordelia continue in the house, despite all being on their guard.

The story was good, the ending was quite a surprise. The setting was picturesque, and the characters were varied.

A thoroughly enjoyable read.
