Deadly Liars Duet #2

Together We Burn

Rate this book
I’ve broken my rules, but he’ll never break me.

Stevie
Jake might have shattered the one thing I swore I’d never give.
But vengeance always did look good on me.
I’m not the girl who falls apart. I’m the one who burns it all down.
He thinks this is just another game, but he’s wrong.
Because betraying Stevie Matthews is the last move he’ll ever make.

Jake
She thinks I’m the villain.
Maybe I am.
But Stevie’s playing a game in the dark…with missing pieces.
And she has no clue who she’s up against.
Now she’s on a warpath, and I’m the man standing in the way.
So let her make me burn for my sins.
Because I’d set the world on fire just to be the ashes at her feet.

*Together We Burn is the conclusion to the Deadly Liars duet. Book one must be read first in order to understand the story. Please read the Trigger Warnings in advance.

Part 2

I was so excited to start this part!!!

The first couple of chapters had me intrigued but my excitement dropped after Marinez’s downfall at the strip club, where the scenes that followed were farfetched.

Later it became slightly sappy and was filled with 🐇🔥 pages. The suspense had a secondary role, and the melodrama didn’t excite me.

What an incredible conclusion to the Deadly Liars duet! There were so many unanswered questions in Together We Lie and that cliffhanger at the end?! I did not expect the turn of events and was dying to find out what would happen next in Together We Burn.

From the beginning to end I was hooked on Stevie and Jake. They were such a unique couple and they held a special place in my heart. They surely had their imperfections. Stevie was a hothead. Her ‘shoot first ask questions later’ attitude often got her into trouble and as for Jake, it was his betrayal. He shattered all hopes she once had for him and for them. But he more than made up for it with his grovelling, persistence and determination. He would do anything to fight for Stevie and win her back.

Stevie completely stole the show in book one and I loved her character even more in this one. I admired her strength, resilience and fire. She wasted no time to recover and train, in preparation to take down those who wronged her. At the same time, she was very conflicted about Jake, not sure whether to kill him or forgive him. Despite what went down, she still had feelings for him.

Having Jake’s perspective was crucial. It was time we heard his side of the story and saw the fuller picture. He was not only possessive, obsessive and dirty but also swoony af. I was on my knees for this man.

The pace of the book was brilliant. It allowed the story to flow and relationships to progress in a realistic and believable manner. The amount and level of spice in this book was unreal. The strip club scene had got to take the top spot. Hate f*ck, love confessions, unexpected twists, thrilling action, Together We Burn had it all. The epilogue was everything I wished for Stevie and Jake. Bravo Mhairi!

“But each time he would knock out another brick from the wall around my heart, and soon there would be nothing left but him and me surrounded by rubble”

Tropes
Forbidden (Assassin and her target)

Together We Burn is book 2 of the deadly liars duet and book 1 Together We Lie must be read first ❤️

I’m going to keep the spoilers out of this review but first things first if you haven’t read together we lie yet- do it now! It’s free to read in KU and it’s one of the best debut novels I have ever read. It’s unlike any book I’ve read, the plot is outstanding, Stevie, the main character is such a bad ass, assassin yet vulnerable and I ADORE her! There is a huge plot twist, one of the most shocking I’ve read and Together We Burn deals with the aftermath of this

Together We Burn is a redemption story between Stevie and Jake, full of action, spice, angst and twists. Jake is the billionaire pharmaceutical CEO who was Stevies target. The chemistry between these two is off the charts and Stevie makes Jake work for what he wants. The spice in this book is 🫠🫠🥵🔥😮‍💨so good and lots of it. Also I loved getting both Stevie and Jakes POV in this book

Finally, this book wins the best epilogue award for me. Absolute perfection and an amazing end to their story. @variscottwrites I am so proud of you- your writing is outstanding and this duet is amazing 🤩

Together We Burn

*Super massive huge thanks to Vari and Nisha at Nisha's Books and Coffee for generously providing my with an ARC copy to put me out of my cliffhanger misery sooner*

Cast your mind back to May when all I wanted after finishing Together We Lie was to FIND OUT WHAT HAPPENED NEXT
Well, reel you mind back in because the day is here as is Together We Burn!

Now you might not know just how much I loved Together We Lie because that was back in the day when I told myself “don't write reviews Amy, no one cares what you think about things” which ya know, is still true.

I was so impatient for this book because I needed to know just how Vari was going to convince me that Jake wasn’t a complete waste of space of a man AND BOY OH BOY did she convince me! The man was not going to take no for an answer when it came to winning Stevie back.

Did someone say Stevie? Oh right I did, wow it’s almost as if I knew she’s what I was going to talk about next! I think it would have been possible for her to even more of a badass than she already was AND YET she excelled herself! I loved getting to see her A) get her revenge and B) start to live her life for herself and not as a puppet for someone else.

This duet has everything I love, female assassins and violence need I say more?

It blows my tiny mind that these were Vari’s debut, she has totally knocked it out the park and I am so very excited to read every single one of her future works (sorry Vari you’re stuck with me!)

If my review so far hasn’t convinced you to pick up this duet maybe this line of entirely capital letters will;

PLEASE READ THE DEADLY LIARS DUET, OKAY? THANKS!

Are you looking for your next strong badass heroine? Stevie is your girl.
This duet has it all… action, violence, betrayal, revenge and let’s not forget the STEAM. Jake and that mouth of his, how could Stevie stay mad at that?! I couldn’t. That cliffy Vari gave us in book two had me pissed but I was quick to forgive and take my anger in another direction.
In Together We Burn, the hits keep coming for Stevie but nothing keeps her down.

The HEA… swoon!

I can’t wait to see what Vari does with other characters from this book, I want Alex’s book ASAP.

fan freaking tastic

Together We Burn is book 2 in the Deadly Liars Series. If you have not read Together We Lie then I suggest you put this down and go read that one first. Trust me, you will not understand what is going on.

Ok, for those of you who have read Book 1, let me tell you book 2 does NOT disappoint.

All those burning questions you had from book 1 get answered. I didn’t know if it was possible to come back from what happened in Together We Lie. I was set on my feelings for some of these individuals. (Sorry for being cryptic but I don’t want to give away spoilers). Somehow someway the author redeemed a character or two.

Stevie is still badass. I love how strong she is. She has been knocked down time and time again. She carries so much on her shoulders. She continues to come out on top, sure she suffers bumps and bruises along the way but it’s worth it in the end.

Great freaking job, Vari Scott. I laughed, I cried, I panted…thank you for this fabulous read.

💬 Thoughts:

I was so excited to finally be getting answers to all the questions I was left with after book 1, but I am also sad that Jake and Stevie’s story is over!

After the events at the end of book 1, Jake has a lot of grovelling to do to if he wants to be with Stevie. Their attraction and sexual chemistry is there throughout the whole book. Stevie just needs to admit to herself how she really feels. She definitely makes him work for it but hat man is damn persistent and tears through the walls that Stevie has built between them.

Stevie once again shows us how bad ass she is and the story is filled with so much action, suspense, great banter and SPICE!

I have LOVED this duet. I cannot believe these were Vari's debut books! If you haven't started the duet yet, I highly recommend that you do!

Well, Well, Well. I have no words really.
What an amazing ending to Jake and Stevies story.
Jake - I didn't expect him to be utterly filthy and swoony. Even more so in this book!
Stevie - I love this girl with all her sass and fiestyness. She brought it all.
I knew Jake would redeem himself but weren't sure how deep the bitch of a mother was. But i was so pleased!!
I absolutely bloody loved this book. Thank you for allowing me to be on your team and read this baby early 🖤

I can’t even begin to tell you the amount of love I have for this duet. I have completely fallen in love with Stevie and Jake’s story. It’s fast become one of my absolute favorites. ❤️

I honestly had no idea what would happen after the cliffy we were left on in Together We Lie. I was constantly on the edge of my seat waiting to see just what would happen next. But let me tell you, Vari did not disappoint! You get drama, action, spice, and all of the groveling! 😏

The epilogues were just so perfectly perfect for the end of their story. 🥹 Honestly, it’s been days since I’ve finished reading this, and I still can’t stop thinking about it.

Have you read this amazing duet yet? If not, I highly recommend it!

Omg was this book better than the first! It picks up right where book one ends. I am so glad we were able to see more of Jake and Stevie’s relationship. I love how much Stevie is a bad ass and doesn’t take any shit from anyone. I love that Jake continued to break down Stevie’s walls to get her to trust him. This book also had a good amount of spice throughout it and the plot was also good. I also really enjoyed Stevie’s relationship with Alex.

What we get:
-Assassin FMC
-CEO/Target MMC
-Forbidden
-Suspense & spice!

Number one- why did I sleep on this duet? Number two - how is this duet not talked about more?!

I’ve had these books on my TBR since last summer and I’m so annoyed with myself that it took me this long to read them. I was blown away that TWL is Vari’s first book. Throughout this whole duet, I was pretty much watching a movie in my head, that's how perfectly descriptive it is. She gave us the perfect amount to paint the scene but didn’t go overboard with useless filler.

Stevie Mathews is an assassin for her best friend's family business, a family who helped save her as a teen. She’s the epitome of a badass FMC - she doesn’t take crap from anyone, including her boss, she’s loyal to the few people in her life she loves and Stevie isn’t referred to as a secret weapon for no reason - she’s incredibly focused on her job. That is until she meets her target Jake Weston, CEO of a pharmaceutical company.

Stevie & Jakes initial meeting doesnt go as planned which sets this target apart from all the rest. The twists and turns thought out kept me hooked and that cliffy at the end of book one?! I want to say I saw it coming, and I had a few ideas, but I was still wildly impressed with how it played out.

I don’t feel like I can accurately describe how good this duet is without giving any spoilers, especially for book two - Together We Burn, since it's a continuation of Together We Lie.

All I will say for TWB is you will get all your questions answered (well almost…Alex I have some questions for you!!) Where TWL was only from Stevie’s POV, TWB gives us Jake’s POV and we get to see how certain scenes played out that may have left us hanging in book 1! This was imperative for us to understand Jake’s side of things.

GAH, reading this book meant so much to me. TWL was the first ARC I ever received, then to be present through some of TWB’s writing process, and seeing the final piece of this duet come together, to having it in my hands was surreal. I was so intrigued by Stevie and Jake’s story in TWL, and then desperately NEEDING their conclusion. AND WHAT A CONCLUSION THAT WAS. A quick recap; Stevie is an assassin, and Jake, a pharmaceutical CEO, is her next target, but things go sideways (an understatement) when Stevie breaks all of her rules when it comes to him, & damn if there aren’t steep consequences to said actions. Book one ends in a serious cliffhanger & without spoilers, a huge divide between Jake and Stevie. Going into TWB, Jake and his persistence to win Stevie over and break down those walls was so well done along with Stevie’s conflicting range of emotions on whether she wanted to kill or kiss Jake was so good, I was in the same boat as her at times too. Vari’s ability to make you truly love/despise characters & to make you feel like you are in each moment with them is something special. The storyline itself was filled with suspense, banter, revenge, secrets, SPICE, and kept me intrigued and guessing the next thing to happen at each turn. I was so happy with how the story played out and kind of baffled that this came from the mind of one of my friends. I think their conclusion was truly perfect for them, and it took me an hour to read the epilogue because I wasn’t ready to let them go 🥹 If you are wanting to support an indie author, or read something that isn’t your typical billionaire romance, please pick this duet up, you won’t be disappointed.

Oh man....after the way Together We Lie ended I was a bundle of anger...lol! If you read it you know what I mean. I have been anticipating the conclusion to this duet ever since finishing the first book and I loved every single word of this book.

Life just cannot go in a good way for Stefany and she is getting close to her breaking point. Betrayed by Jacob, the man she won't admit she loves, she is determined to protect her sister from her crazy mother. Life goes on though and Will Jones is till handing out assignments to her. Then there is the matter of Jacob Weston and the fact that he seems to be popping up everywhere she is.

Jacob makes it his mission to clear the air with Stefany no matter how long or whatever it takes. As he sets forth with his plan more and more secrets are coming out that directly affect Stefany. He is by her side every step of the way whether she wants him there or not.

Both Jake and Stevie grew more as characters in this story and I couldn't be happier. They have this off the charts chemistry that is not to be ignored. Stevie's exterior stays hard and strong but little by little tiny pieces of the fortress around her heart start to crumble to the ground. When she is close to getting the answers she needs she finds out who her true friends and family are as they have her back.

Ms. Scott wrapped up this duet so nicely. The emotions she had me feeling at the end of book one were totally worth the emotions I felt after finishing book two. Although this was just a duet I came to love the main and most side characters (mainly Alex Jones) and how involved with Stevie and Jake's story they actually are. I look forward to Alex's story that gets hinted at and whatever Vari Scott plans to bring her readers in the future.

When I finished Together We Lie, I wanted more, so much more. The first book ends on such a cliffhanger. Together We Burn gave me everything I needed and yes, I love Stevie even more than I did the first book and Jake is the possessive alpha leading man he was in the first book and redeems himself in the second, just as possessive with a little more sweet talk. Swoony Jake is something else 😉

Together We Burn gives us a little more depth into the back story, more character development, and a super sweet closer to these amazing characters.

Stevie is her badass self, with her edge and wit and vengefulness. Jake is possessive, smart and caring in ways you didn't know you needed from him. Vari did an amazing job getting these two down and dirty but also capture the sentimental moments.

Jake throughout the story, broke down Stevie's walls. He accepts her rough exterior wholeheartedly but also is able to see the beauty in her cold heart, that isn't really cold, just needed the right man to love her wholeheartedly.

I was in awe of Together we Lie, I'm in awe of Together we Burn. Vari wrote an exceptional duet that was spicy, riveting, edgy and heart pumping.

This is the second book in the Deadly Liars duet, and holy moly, these books are so amazingly brilliant. You would never know that this is Vari’s debut duet. Her attention to detail comes off her words and plays as if you were watching it on a movie screen. The plot is unique, the characters are interesting, and the overall structure of the story is phenomenally written.

Together We Lie ended on a cliffhanger, and Together We Burn picks up shortly after that. Stevie feels betrayed; she was lied to, played, and abused at the hands of someone she thought was different. But the plot twist in the beginning of book 2? Completely changed my mind about the entire direction of the plot. It instantly sucks you in, and each page shows you another reason how what you previously thought isn’t even close to the truth but much better.

The finale for Stevie and Jake is everything it needed to be. There was action, grovel, emotion, more action, and a happily ever after. And don’t worry, it’s packed full of spice as well. All I’ll say is Jake’s mouth went from 0 to 100 between these books and I was there for it.

This book isn’t for the faint of heart as it does touch on some heavier topics, but it is seriously so good. If you like enemies to lovers, female mercenaries and deliciously dark men, you won’t regret reading this. Vari done a phenomenal job and I can’t wait to see what she does next!

I fell in love with the characters and storyline in book 1. So, I had high hopes for book 2 and I was not disappointed!

The storyline and plot were amazing. There was a lot going on and a lot of plot pieces came together in this book. I was kept entertained the entire time. I also liked how near the end certain characters came together to form a United front.

Don’t even get me started on Jake! I loved him in book 1 and prayed he would redeem himself in book 2. He certainly did! I LOVE HIM! I’ve added him to my book boyfriend list because I love him so much. He is hot, charming, funny, possessive, a bit sentimental, supportive af, and his dirty talk is elite.

I feel for Stevie. Her childhood was absolutely terrible. I love how much of a badass she is and how she takes no crap from anyone. I am so glad she finally got what she deserved in the end.

This duet is one of my all time favorite books.
Go read it!

I thought this series was good, especially for a debut novel!
Stefany an assassin ends up having a connection with her target Jacob, a CEO of a pharmaceutical company. while she doesn’t know much about her mission she quickly learns that there is definitely a lot more going on with this target than any before.

The plot was intriguing and I enjoyed trying to figure it out. I did think that it ended somewhat abruptly and so to me the plot fell a bit flat. BUT. It does sound like there will be more books for the side characters whom I did love. SO, I think the plot could be continued in those stories and dived into a bit deeper.
I do overall recommend and will read future books in the series if they are to be!

this book seriously brought me out of an extended hiatus and sleep deprived state and motivated me to make an edit. i haven’t felt that motivation in a while, so i’m extra thankful for this book for that.

i loved this book and duet. for vari’s book/duet baby, i was so impressed. she did an amazing job at making you characters and hate villains. and the steam 🔥

Stevie and Jake are incredible. the cliffhanger from book 1 hurt and i didn’t know how Jake would redeem himself. but his obsession with Stevie showed how amazing he is.

this duet gave me all the feels and i definitely recommend it. i seriously cannot wait for more from the side characters!

Stevie was sassy, hilarious, a little psycho, and we got to see her more vulnerable side which I loved

Also fell even more in love with the side characters who I hope may get their own books in the future (please? 🙏🏽)

This kept me on the edge of my seat not sure how everything would play out and I loved loved loved the ending and the epilogues.

This had me tearing up in moments and laughing at loud the next moment. The characters will pull you in and the story will keep you turning pages until the end.

Jake and Stevie! I knew this story was gonna be 🔥🔥
This book picks up from the cliffhanger from Book 1. Not gonna lie I actually liked seeing Stevie's mom and Jake together. I mean don't get me wrong, Jake's thought bout her was lol I loved how he repulsed internally but kept his acting.

Jake was always beside Stevie in every instance. Even though she denied to forgive him he kept on trying. HE'S GOD!!! SO CARING!! Them spending time together was so cute and I live for those moments. The spice and Jake's dirty talk huh huhhh so HOT!! The ending was perfect and so well planned. God, I loved Chris and her son's moment as well. So damn cute.

Highly recommend!!

Cliffhanger? ❌️

Do I recommend? ✅️ but Together We Lie must be read first.

Trigger Warnings: ☠️ ☠️

Tropes: dark forbidden romance, enemies-to-lovers, lust-to-love, second chance, mercenary, revenge

Stevie Matthews broke her cardinal rule to never fall for a target. Jake Weston brought feelings out in her that she never knew she could feel. But he betrayed her worse than anyone else ever had. It was a game and now it was her turn. Stevie made an impact on Jake as well. He fell even though he knew he had to betray her. He also knew she would be out for blood. In the game they both took part in, she needed to beware because she didn't have all the pieces. Jake is truly possessive of her and he's determined to get back what belongs to him.

Together We Lie was one hell of a thrilling read and this book was it's perfect companion. Both books are the debut duet for Vari Scott and she blew me away. She has solidified herself as an author I will continue to read. It was action-packed, hot, spicy, filled with suspenseful twists and plenty of angst to keep my attention throughout. I couldn't recommend this read more. This is my honest opinion, freely given.

Ya'll this book! THIS BOOK! Vari slayed when it came to the conclusion of this insanely immaculate duet! You need to read 𝘛𝘰𝘨𝘦𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳 𝘞𝘦 𝘓𝘪𝘦 first before starting 𝘛𝘰𝘨𝘦𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳 𝘞𝘦 𝘉𝘶𝘳𝘯 and I 𝐏𝐑𝐎𝐌𝐈𝐒𝐄 that you'll absolutely thank me later.

The first book ended on an astronomical cliffhanger that left my mouth agape and so many questions unanswered. Thankfully the second book solidifies this problem and we get the most epic finale for Stevie and Jake!

Stevie is such a badass and we get to see more of her on a deeper internal level that creates all the feels for her. Jake amped up the sexual tension and dirty talk to a whole other experience! And that man did NOT disappoint with his groveling.

This entire duet literally had me feeling so many emotions throughout. From anger, rage, humor, heartache, shock, fear, happiness, tears and love. The epilogue in this book pulled at my heartstrings and I never wanted the story to end!

Absolutely fantastic job to Vari on her debut duet as a brand new author! She deserves all the praise for her hardwork and dedication to these characters! Can't wait to see what she writes next!

Even better than the first book! It's funny, because I was so mad at the revelation about Jake and the very first page of this book was a note from the author about that and I thought to myself, "how the hell can she possibly redeem him?" I was even starting to think I didn't want him to get redemption, I was so angry at him. It's so rare that a book can play with my emotions like this and I love it.

The way Jake barreled his way back into Steve's life was perfect. His dirty mouth making it even better! Stevie tried her best, gave it her all, but just like me, she couldn't resist him. They get the happily ever after they deserve and I'm very happy with that, but I'm a little sad about Alex. At first I thought he was secretly in love with Stevie, and that mysterious tattoo was never explained. I'd still like to know what that was about. I now suspect he's in love with her sister, but I'm not sure and I really hope the author will write his story. He such a great guy and he too deserves his own happily ever after. I am looking forward to reading any book this author writes next.

The epic conclusion to Jake + Stevie's story is finally here, and WHEWWWW, let me tell you : Vari brought the violence, the drama, and the spice up to FULL THROTTLE in this story. Together We Lie was amazing, but Together We Burn is next fucking level. You will be on the edge of your seat waiting to see what this couple will get into next -- will Stevie forgive Jake? will Emilia get revenge? what has Rocky been up to? are we going to see Mac again? GAH. All the questions and I promise you, you will get the answers to all of them and more. In the first book we met these characters, fell in love with them, and were betrayed by them. In this story, you'll get groveling, violence, the revenge, and happily ever after steak (Stevie + Jake .. it's a thing) deserves. I love this duet with my entire heart and you will too.

Just like the first book, this one is definitely a nail biting ride. I have to say that I got very attached to these characters, including some of the side characters, and would absolutely love to see more stories in this world.

Jake and Stefany are both such complete characters & this story was just perfect for them. And it definitely will give you all the feels.

I absolutely recommend reading this duet.

Such a fun read!

This duet seriously was such a fun read. I was in love with Stevie from the get go and only fell in love with her more as things progressed. She didn't take sh*t from anyone and was so fierce for those she loved. On the flip side it was also refreshing to see a bada$$ character like her show vulnerability as well; it made her that much more relatable. Jake really shocked me as his character blossomed and I think everyone will be pleasantly pleased with the things that come out of his mouth! They had great chemistry as a couple and I loved how things progressed! On top of the main characters, I LOVED the banter with the side characters as well. It added a lightheartedness to the darker elements of the story.
