Beast's Surrender, Beauty's Revenge

Rate this book
Almas has lived his life under the hungry gaze of a man who would take everything from him. When Lord Uther’s power and privilege land his father in the dungeon until Almas gives him what he wants, Almas turns beyond the confines of his small, submissive village for a savior.

Revenge sends him to the deepest shadows in the northern forest looking for a monster of legend, but when the creature he finds there is more man than demon, Almas learns the true cost of vengeance. Its pursuit makes beasts of us all.

The instrument of Almas’s revenge, a brute kept in isolation for centuries, is the very person who reminds him what it means to be human, to be safe. But what is safety for himself if he can’t protect his family?

Beast’s Surrender, Beauty’s Revenge is a Beauty and the Beast retelling featuring a beautiful youth out for blood, a beast with a red fury waiting to be unleashed, and the sense of safety and acceptance that bring them both back to themselves. It was originally published on our Patreon page.

1.5 rounded up

I know I need to stop even trying to pick these books up. The problem is that the concepts/summaries always sound right up my alley, but the execution is always lacking. This is a novella, so there is even less build-up than usual, with super rushed pacing and development and broad, boring, generalized characterization. Such potential, but alas.

I expected this book to be longer for some reason and while it was good, it moved at a really quick pace that felt a bit unsatisfying. The story was cute and consent is very sexy 💜

2.5☆, rounded up. I find these shorts that this author-duo originally write as a serial for their Patreon page... less satisfying than what I normally expect from them. The style always just ends up being a little disjointed and lackluster, and in this case, chock full of preachy character introspection about consent. It would have been a DNF for me, but by the time I realized how annoyed I was, I was almost at the end anyway, so 🤷‍♀️

I love a Beauty and the Beast retelling, so I was eager to check out this latest story from Sam Burns and W.M. Fawkes. The authors are so good at fantasy and this story hit my sweet spot of being a creative adaptation, while still holding true to the main plot beats and story elements of the original tale. The set up gives us beautiful Almas, who faces nonstop attempts to coerce him into bed by the disreputable Uther, who is using his power to make Almas’ life miserable for not complying. No one in the town helps him or stands up for him and Almas has hit his breaking point. So he heads off into the woods, looking for the beast of legend so he can exact his revenge. Of course, what he finds surprises him (and the reader, so I’m being vague), and I loved the way the story takes some unexpected turns. It was just really cleverly done and takes the well-known story and gives it some interesting twists.

Thank you so much to the authors for this ARC. Once again, Sam Burns and W.M. Fawkes manage to fill a short novella with all the charm of a full novel. I loved this, it was sooo cute and heart-wrenching ૮꒰ྀི∩´ ᵕ `∩꒱ྀིა I will say, the one thing that did feel very jarring was the occasional way the story detoured from the plot just to give lectures on consent, and there was no NEED for it! It came off weird and out of place almost every single time, especially considering the character it was coming from. The story was doing a great job showing the importance of consent just through Almas flinching away from touch and Percival's attention to his personal space, it didn't need to go on a tangent on how important consent is and how "no" applies to any lords as well as commoner. We got it, we SAW its importance through the characters' actions, you don't need to TELL us “(ノ _ <,, ) It just yanked me out of the story time and time again because it felt like we were pausing in the middle of a conversation to preach about something the story was already doing a great job of depicting without spelling it out for us ¯\_(-_-)_/¯

That said, it doesn't happen... ALL that often, and when you can get past those moments, the story is very cute and deep and... ugh, there were parts that made me tear up because they were so heartbreaking and so nuanced and interesting. I loved this, I wish it was even longer (˶ᵔ ᵕ ᵔ˶)

I am a sucker for fairy tale retellings. This one got to me. It really did. I was not expecting it and it knocked me off my feet. I absolutely loved it!! Almas has had everything taken from him by greedy worthless Lord and it has driven him to great lengths to exact revenge. What he finds is not what he was expecting. Percival may seem beastly at first, but as everything starts coming back to him, he remembers that revenge is not all it’s cracked up to be. The thirst for revenge can change a person and Alma’s has to decide if that is truly what he wants. I adored the ending.

Short but sweet

This was a lovely short novella offering a new twist on the Beauty and the Beast classic. It only takes about an hour to read but is well worth the effort. The following paragraph was my favorite quote from the book:

I reached up to cup Almas’s cheek in my hand, and he leaned into the touch like a flower to the sun. He’d never wanted to hold himself apart from everyone. He’d only wanted the right to choose who touched him. The right every person should have, always.

I enjoyed this book. Almas lives in a village where a lord is making his life miserable. The final straw is when his father is taken and put in the dungeon with trumped up charges. He takes off in the woods to find the Beast who can help him take his revenge. When he finally finds him, he frees him. The Beast has been living in the tower for centuries, and when his memories start coming back, he says his name is Percival. Great world building with how Percival helped free his father and take care of the lord. Loved it and cannot wait for more from these authors.

The story was good and left me wanting more! More of the current story between the two main characters, but also more on Almas' backstory, to find out more of his story and exactly what occurred to make him become a beast. Sure we find out later, but I want to see it all first hand.

All in all a good little novella worth the read though it's over all not one I'd find myself drawn to re-reading. Once was enough. The only way I could see myself reading it again is if Almas' story was put out, as a fun little refresher read. I received an ARC of this story and this is my honest review.

So good

This was a great Beauty and The Beast retelling with a hefty side of vengeance.
Almas refuses to give in to the odious and lecherous Lord who weilds power in his village.
When his father is hurt in order to force him into compliance, he seeks help.
He finds it in Percival, a cursed man with a beast within also seeking vengeance.
They get what's necessary but also learn that vengeance comes at the cost of potentially losing themselves.
They found in each other a love and peace that overcomes any obstacles.

This is a fun twist on a tale as old as time. It was an entertaining novella with good world building, and it delivered important messages about consent and revenge (sometimes a little preachily). You can't help but feel very sorry for Almas, a young man who is pursued by a lord who makes his life miserable when he refuses. He's consumed with the idea of revenge and looks for the legendary Beast to accomplish this for him. When he finds him, things don't quite go as planned. It's definitely worth the read.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

This would have been SO much better if it were longer. I loved the premise and the set up to the plot, but towards the end everything kind of fell flat. The resolution felt too easy. I also wish we had more time between the two MCd getting to know each other because I feel like they barely spoke and then there was no more Lord and now they're boning in relief. It felt rushed and I wanted more character development. Overall it was a nice, short read. I'd kill for an epilogue novella about their new life together at Percival's old holdings.

great short retelling

This reminds me a bit of Dearskin. A tragedy, loss of consent and self, finding it again on a strange journey for revenge. A witch and magic. Except this is with two men, and it is not a full length novel. But the almost ethereal, dream like quality of the story did remind me of that book (one which I haven’t read in decades but remember vividly) anyhow. Great retelling of beauty and the beast. This is fairly low spice (though there is some) but it’s minimal and fits the story.

Almas & Percival

I really enjoyed this book. Almas wanted revenge on the people is his village and the evil lord, so he went looking for the Beast. But instead found Percival a man who allowed a witch to cast a spell to enable him to get revenge on the people and country that killed his family many, many years ago. Together they learn revenge isn’t everything and forge a bond with love for each other.

It’s a somewhat sweet story.

Beast's Surrender, Beauty's Revenge is a Beauty and the Beast retelling. This story is about Almas and Percival. This was another wonderful story by Sam Burns & W M Fawkes. I love fairytale retellings and this one was a great example. I loved the characters so much. This story teaches us that revenge isn't everything as Almas learns. I loved the ending. I would definitely recommend this book.

I really enjoyed the set up here for Almas to need and find his beast. My heart went out to both Almas and Percival. They learn from each other what is most important in life. I found their story to be a bit heavy but that made the good feels at the end that much stronger. A lovely fairytale novella!

this was really sweet but because it was so short it felt really rushed, and many aspects of the plot just weren't fleshed out entirely because of that. but cute idea and cute execution.

meh it’s not bad

A quick read to pass the time, but nothing particularly memorable. The romance felt flat and rushed, with little chemistry between the main characters. The world-building was too shallow to create any real connection to the story or its leads.

This was a lovely re-imagining of Beauty and the Beast! It definitely had a fairytale quality and I liked seeing both the differences and the similarities to the original story. While it’s under a 100 pages, I felt it had everything the story needed to be complete.
