The Moon Could Only Weep

Faetales rarely lie and they rarely tell the truth.

Maijerda. The sole survivor of a shipwreck, rebelling against being swept into the depths of grief. Unyielding, she's willing to risk the realm's harmony to unveil the truth of family secrets masked in the blank pages of a sentient book.

Jeddeith. An exiled monster hunter turned librarian. Haunted by the first dreams he's endured in the six years since losing his memories, challenging his intimacy with death.

Lyrian. A sea tempest sorceress ravenous to inflict vengeance after being imprisoned for nine hundred years and stripped of her free will. Most want to watch the world burn. Lyrian would see it drown.

Maijerda and Jeddeith must set aside their mutual mistrust to uncover why her ship was attacked and decipher the blank book. If they fail to outrun Lyrian, she will stop at nothing to kill Maijerda and use the book to reclaim her stolen magic.

This story is a cinematic fantasy for adults that explores grief, the magic of stories and song, neurological disorders and differences, and the nuances of speech pathology/communication, through a thrilling adventure laced with magic, mystery, and betrayal.

This was a very ambitious novel, and I admire the writer for the amount of work and effort that went into this piece. The characters, narrative, and entire universe is fleshed out and extremely thoughtful. I found myself often looking for some sort of map or diagram to position where everything was happening, and that's certainly a good sign.

So there were great things about this story; but, this story suffered from a great deal of issues. There were a large group of ethnicities, side-characters, places, things, and all manner of stuff happening. I had trouble differentiating anything. The chapters seemed unnecessary to the greater story and this read more like one gargantuan single stream of story/arc.

There is a saying about "riding the tiger," which I've taken to mean many good writers let their writing and stories get the better of them, and they are carried off in any direction without keeping it concise, specific to the story, and suffering from tangential writing. The main character would find herself in new places, different times, or often I had trouble understanding what was happening and had to pause.

Some things happened that had no explanation, or the wording used was so overwhelmingly descriptive or, again, unnecessary that I became frustrated or lost. There were a great deal more problems that I had with reading this, but I appreciate the effort and work put into this work regardless.

Well done in completing something so expansive, I hope your writing career continues.

this book had so many wonderful things it’s hard to know where to start with this review. delightful villain pov, grumpy librarian, a gargoyle companion (that i didn’t know how badly i needed in my life until i read this book). the writing is magical, the story is gripping, and i can’t wait for the next book in the series (especially after that plot twist!!!)

thank you to the author for the early copy 🫶

This is actually the second time I’ve read through this book entirely. What a damn adventure!! I felt like I was being swept away into a world that is so incredibly detailed that I was right there, with the characters.
The grief is palpable through the pages as Maijerda sorts through things and figures out how to live without her Da. Everything about this story screams adventure fantasy. Highly recommend.

Thanks to the author (my best friend) for the eARC of this book.

This started off strong with lots of beautiful language and engaging characters. Halfway through I had to DNF because the characters got to clunky and confusing.

To be fair, it could be just the holiday season and my mood and I think I will try this book again when I have more mental capacity.

Loved the world building, beautiful prose, and interesting characters. Showed a love of language, metaphor, poetry and song. Takes its time. Wove the exposition expertly—revealing as we needed it in a patient way.

I’d never have known she was a new author. Can’t wait for the series to continue!
