I lived in Mexico a few years ago during President Felipe Calderon’s “War on Drugs.” I suffered the mourning of a young friend who was kidnapped, tortured, shot, and left dead in a vacant field in his home city of Monterrey.  Israel was a bright and handsome college student.  The mistake that cost him his life was to meet the wrong person at a party: She was the estranged wife of a drug cartel leader in Monterrey, but she didn’t tell Israel. Their flirtation put an end to his life and the dreams for him of all who loved him.  I was aware of the violence in Mexico when I arrived and tried to stay alert. After I came to make friends and saw that they courageously lived their lives in a world abundant with daily horrors and  impunity, I realized how safely we lead lives in the United States. I learned that we know little about how we contribute to problems in the country to the south of us.

Israel’s murder began to haunt me a little more each day. I couldn’t forget him. Three suspects arrested were released after 40 days. The drug cartel’s wife was never seen again. There was no justice. I spent two years researching and understanding the violence of organized crime, especially that of the drug cartels throughout Latin America and the United States. I found out that on the demand side, the people in the United States purchase the majority of drugs coming from the Mexican cartels. On the supply side, our country is the biggest supplier of illegal weapons used by these cartels. These weapons have been responsible for over 100,000 deaths in Mexico in the past seven years. Even the casual marijuana enjoyed in social gatherings in our country arrives to us soaked in the blood of young people on both sides of the border. We don’t think about that at all. I do now. I think about my friend, Israel, and how he must have known when his murderers had him that no hero was going to show up to save him.
So I have some things to say about international relations between Mexico and the United States, but I say them through personal stories of heroic people on both sides of the border. I know that for people to engage enough to listen to me, they are going to need to relate to the characters I put before them. All the fictionalized people in my novels are based to varying degrees on real counterparts, or they are composites of people whom I knew or heard about.  The incredible things that happen in the novels largely come from the news stories of Mexico and the United States. Do I need to say the cliché? Truth really is stranger than fiction.
The result of my time in Mexico was the writing of the novel, The Z Redemption. Its sequel, Corvette Nightfire, was published in April, 2014. Updated second editions of both novels came out in 2015. The third volume of the trilogy, tentatively titled El Camino Oscuro,  is being co-written with Robert Selfe and should be published within the next year.

There are two free short stories related to The Z Redemption novels. The first, “Awakening from the Golden Sleep,” describes early adventures of Ana Valdez when she was a child in Mazatlán, Mexico, a resort city on the Pacific Ocean. In The Z Redemption, Ana is a main character who ends up being President of Mexico after a military coup overthrows the government. The second short story (of which I am especially proud) is a “prequel” to Corvette Nightfire. It is called “Nightfire!” It tells a fascinating story of Corvette Nightfire’s grandparents, Tarahumara Indians who became entangled with the Mexican drug cartel of Sinaloa. Their actions set up Corvette’s destiny, thrillingly depicted with tremendous suspense in the second novel. While working on the third novel with Robert Selfe, I plan also to write a short story related to it.

The second book in “The Z Redemption Trilogy”, “Corvette Nightfire” quickly establishes that this book is as likely to break your heart as it is to send it racing and that no one is safe in the world of the drug cartels. Just like its predecessor, “Corvette Nightfire” is a fast paced thriller that sucks you in from the very first page and never lets go. The main character, the aptly named Corvette Nightfire is as fast as his name implies: he lives fast, he dances fast and most importantly, he plays poker fast. What begins as a normal day at the casino turns into a high stakes adventure in a matter of minutes as he encounters a girl, a gun, a key and a hell of a lot of money. See? Fast. With no going back and the clock ticking down, Corvette must rely on his skills as a poker player to play a much more dangerous game: saving the life of the woman he has come to love from a calculating and cold-hearted killer. His journey will bring many characters into the mix- some new and some old familiar faces as well- but all serving a purpose to the central storyline. Tightly written and beautifully expressed, this is a story that perfectly balances the worlds of high stakes poker and drug lords with the universal themes of self-doubt, passion, connection, loyalty and maybe most touching, self-discovery. We often do not know what we are capable of until we are pushed to the very brink of sanity and Corvette is a character who is on a two-fold journey- one in the real world and one in his heart and mind. From a readers perspective it is fascinating to watch the struggle and the transformation that this character goes through. The story also offers an interesting cultural aspect that is nicely woven into the fabric of the story- you learn quite a bit about the Mexican culture, the drug cartel culture, and even the Vegas/Poker World culture. All of these details come together in layers that peel away a bit at a time and give the story a depth not seen in many thriller genre books. I really enjoyed “Corvette Nightfire”. It left me feeling very aware that life has a harsh duality- it can be brutally unfair at times and unspeakably beautiful at others. A fabulous read, “Corvette Nightfire” is high stakes and fast paced all around and the reader is all the better for having taken the ride!

I just finished Corvette Nightfire. It was a very good read that kept me "turning pages" to discover the next twist that Daniel Wetta had built into the plot. I'm anxiously awaiting part 3 of the trilogy.

I’m going to get this out there before I do my review, the reason I gave this book only 3 thumbs was the font used in the paperback copy I have. I know this sounds petty but, for me, the font really interfered with my whole enjoyment of this novel; I’m not sure how the font came into being but it was certainly not a good fit for the book, sorry.

Now onto the book itself; this is the second instalment in ‘The Z Redemption’ trilogy, the first of which I reviewed some time ago, which was also a debut novel for this Author. Unlike the first instalment this time around the Author has chosen to write in conjunction with someone else and, to be honest, they produced a very worthy sequel.

The book centres on the character of the title, not a car as I first thought when I saw this, and what a character he is. The guy is a man’s man; he lives plays fast, loves fast and lives fast. This could quite easily have made him a character that women readers would dislike, but the Authors gave him a soft and vulnerable side too that women could relate to and, in doing this made his a character for all genders. As the storyline progress we see the struggles that this character has to go through to reconcile the two sides of his personality, and join him on a journey to discover himself. The book is full of characters that are equally well written, some old from the previous book, and some new, but all of them play a part in the plot. There are no characters that appear and leave the reader wondering what their purpose was, if you find one you may want to check that you’ve not skipped a few pages.

To say this is a fast-paced thriller would be an understatement, it’s a book that grabs you from the very first paragraph buckles you into the passenger seat and doesn’t let you out until the ride is over. Not only is this a great story it is full of interesting details surrounding the Mexican culture, which the Authors manage to integrate into the plot seamlessly. Tightly written and right on track every step of the way, this is a book that will leave you breathless to the very end. Something I did really like about this book was the way in which all the details came together, there wasn’t a rush of tying off the loose ends at the end, as can been seen in other books of this genre but rather they came together like the ingredients in a delicate soufflé, which gave the story a great deal of depth and flavour.

Despite my total dislike of the font, and my apologies here to the Authors, I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a fast paced thriller and I will definitely be reading the final instalment of this trilogy.

I received this book as part of a first reads promotion.

I enjoyed this book for the most part, as it was very entertaining, and the plot twists kept me on my toes throughout the entirety of the story. The action sequences were great, and Daniel Wetta had clearly done his research on Mexican cartels, their operations, and how the DEA is trying to combat them.

The characters were developed in a way that makes you appreciate how a good back-story can pull you in to a story. I found myself sympathizing with Corvette as he was thrust into a world that he had no idea existed, and how he tries to make things right.

One issue that I could not get past while reading this book is that the writing seemed clunky during some of the conversations between characters, and during inner monologues. Another was that one character in particular was referred to by three different names, which was not a problem as I progressed through the book, but had me turning back a chapter or two during the first 75 pages or so to confirm the identity of that character.

Overall, I had an enjoyable time reading this book, and the climax of the story was both smart and exciting. I would recommend this book for people who enjoy crime fiction, fast-paced plots, and the back and forth plotting between the "good guys" and the "bad guys."

This was a fast paced read that I enjoyed from the get go. The intrigue of an exotic woman giving Corvette Nightfire a duffel bag with something, telling him what to do - but he doesn't understand her due to her speaking in Spanish...whew fun stuff. The cat an mouse game that ensues with Corvette Nightfire and the Mexican drug cartel had me riveted. I'd recommend this book to all. Also, I appreciate Goodreads and Mr. Wetta for giving me the opportunity to read and review this book for free.

This was a book I won on the Goodreads giveaway and I'm glad I did. It's a romance novel between Corvette & Valentina, an undercover DEA agent, set amidst the Mexican cartels. An enjoyable read.
Looking forward to the follow up!
