Sean Callahan, a Vietnam veteran, has a plan for his future. He is in medical school in Guadalajara in 1968. Plans change! He and his study partner make a gruesome discovery of two young murder victims hidden in their school. With targets on their backs, they seek assistance of a “retired policeman” and a “coroner”. They all become embroiled in a perilous search for sadistic killers who murdered innocent civilians and uncover an international plot to overthrow the government. Survival requires extraordinary skill, courage, and ingenuity to overcome the seemingly insurmountable challenges and heart-wrenching losses…
This started right off with denial, misdirection and hiding the truth. I found myself wanting to read more. This book brought about so many questions yet so much intrigue. My curiosity got the better of me - did these incidents really happen? Was this based on fact? Is the truth carefully intertwined within the fiction?
I wasn’t sure what to expect when I started reading this book. I enjoyed it, from the story line down to the characters. It was well written, the author put a lot of thought into it.
I received this book from Goodreads. I have mixed feelings about the book. I'd rate the story a 4, but the writing a 1. On one hand, I found the story and historical setting very interesting. It is a piece of history I wasn't familiar with, and while it is a work of fiction, the corrupt Olympic Battalion and student protests were real. However, it took me several months to slog through this because the writing was so poor. Dialogue was stilted, characters full of stereotypes, even considering the 1968 setting. The book clearly needs a strong editor, as there were tons of grammatical errors and awkward usage (i.e. same word multiple times in a sentence). If you can look past that, which was hard for me, the story did hold my interest.
I found the book exciting with a lot of action and suspense. I had a hard time putting it down. Sean and Ana are thrown in a sea of intrigue and danger and somehow survive. And Marcus, Ana's father also in the thick of it with the cartels. It has the history of the 1963 massacre along with the Cristero War in the early 1900s. And a little love story thrown in. The plot is well done and the conflicts are very real and challenging. Love the ending with everyone coming together.
Thank-you for the opportunity to read this novel. Very much a thriller and well written. My only objection is the character of Ana which needs more development. She is strong but she is also weak..seems to cry at a drop of a hat and her age is a confusion is she 22 or 24. She is training in medical field which anyone who does needs a bit more grit as you are dealing with sick people, people who had serious accidents and death. Her character bothered me the most but I love the story.
Could not put down once I started reading this page turner. Historical background very detailed and educational as this reader was unaware of the 1968 happening in Mexico. Intrigue galore, provoking chaaracters, complex multiple story lines. Loyalty, treason, depraved people in power, loving relationships, romance, and much more. A very eye opening read.
I wanted to like this so much, and I couldn't even finish it. It reads like a first draft. It needs to be proof read. It needs some flow. I think the author has a lot of talent, and the book could be incredible, but it needs a real editor. I can feel it trying to pull me in, but I just can't get past the mistakes. I did get this book from goodreads.
This book is a fictionalized story out an event that happened in Mexico in 1968. It is a very graphic murder thriller that keeps you wanting to keep reading and stop reading at the same time. There are many grammatical and typographical errors throughout the book that cause you to have to go back and reread the sentence. If you like graphic thrillers, this is a book for you.
I found the book exciting with a lot of action and suspense. Sean and Ana are thrown in a sea of intrigue and danger and somehow survive. The plot is well done and the conflicts are very real and challenging. It is a book that is hard to put down.
I received this book as a giveaway through good reads. I was pleasantly surprised that the storyline having a mix of action, thrill and romance. I also enjoyed the medical aspect of the book since I work in the field. It was a quick read due to the engaging storyline.
I won this book from Goodreads, thank you so much, what a wonderful book, I enjoyed it so much. If this is this authors first book you have an amazing future ahead of you!! Please keep writing I will happily buy your next book!!!
Once I started this book, I just couldn't put it down! I was surprised how much I enjoyed it since I usually don't read action and adventure stories. Ana and Sean made a great pair to follow. Thank you to Goodreads for a free copy! I just might start reading a whole new genre of books.
The content of this book wasn’t bad, but it felt like it was written by someone who doesn’t know how to craft a novel. It came across as dull and long. The romance between the main characters was also pretty cringy considering it evolved over autopsies of dead bodies.
I wasn’t sure what to expect. I was pleasantly surprised! I started reading and could not put the book down. I definitely recommend the book to anyone who loves a great mystery!
This book was way better than I expected it to be. I was expecting doctor stuff but was very pleased to find that it was about political militia conflicts and espionage.
This was a great book. Lots of interesting characters and plot twists. Kept me at the edge of my seat at times and I cried at the end (my sign of a good book 😂)
I received this book on a goodreads giveaway. I was surprised that it was fairly recent history that I wasn’t aware of. It tells of the history of the massacre of 1963 along with the Cristero War in the early 1900s. These were noteworthy involving both church and state with brutal stories of heinous crimes. For keeping true to the history this book was a 3.25 for me. Unfortunately it’s a long book with fairly simple dialogue. The characters, to me, were very cliche lacking more dimension.
I struggled with the pace of the story. I wanted the book to challenge me on a multifaceted level. It’s an extremely significant piece of history but I found myself continually looking at how much further I had to read.
Regardless it’s an easy read but the subject matter is very descript and might be offensive to some. The subject matter involves mass shooting and torture. The characters are likeable and you want to root them on. If this piece of history was of interest, it might be worth you reading,
