First up, I really enjoyed the writing. It is lyrical but also feels very grounded in the world, giving that unique culture of the valley texture and history. That said, plot-wise it did test my patience a lot. The main character is absolutely clueless about everything, so reading from his perspective, the reader is as well. I think this is good and bad - it keeps the mystery going, but answers are so few and far in between that it was a bit tiring. So puzzle-lovers out there: this one is for you.

Admittedly at first I struggled to get in to this it felt very much like you were thrown into the world and you had to work it out piece by piece, at first I found myself verry confused.
I also didn't connect with some of the characters as much as I'd have liked to not until near the very end.
With that being said the writing was beautiful, the narration was very well done and made the experience very immersive.

The story overall was great too, fast paced a lot of action and fighting all set in a world where life is eternal.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This was like Shōgun meets Hell’s Paradise (lowkey).
I loved it. Such a cool, complex premise!!
This world that William built had me intrigued from the beginning— All the inner working within the mist was so interesting.

Although, I have to say I did struggled to pick up the characters at first, but after a while you find the flow.

“A question needs more than an answer, Soh’Shoro. It needs understanding and acceptance.”

And the whole book revolving around “Eternity”, I was eating this up. His obsession w/ The Princess was insane though lmfao, but hey, I’m here for it ☠️
You do you, buddy 🫵🏽
*I also have to point out the details, like in the beginning mans had a 15 person long train where people had to even crawl just to move & hold it up, I was gagged— Okay Met Gala!!

“Eternity gives us certainty and control, but it also condemns us to suffering, to the cruelest finality of all, living without those we love.”
^This quote hit hard.
Chef’s 💋

Overall, I wasn’t expecting much coming into this, but now I fear I need to read Mistborn & She Who Became The Sun— Which are both on my tbr!!
Brian Nishii did an amazing job narrating!!

I want to do nothing but heap praise on this book—an astounding, unique fantasy carefully constructed with lavish prose and superb world building, Eternity’s Blade is rife with thematic strands of love and obsession, betrayal and sacrifice, identity and existence.

In the Valley, life is contained by salt and lilies, rebirth and eternity: no one can die, only be reborn anew. Except Soh’shoro holds the ability to kill, ensuring finality to his marks. He is stolen away from imperial courts to be trained as an assassin, and therein begins a hypnotic tale.

With clear Japanese influence, this fast-paced plot engages with political intrigue, grand schemes, and warfare. While grim in its violence and bloodshed, it is also tender and poignant. Perhaps my favorite element of the book is Soh’shoro’s sensual pull towards the Ang’soon princess, a woman of rot and decay. His attraction to her is sumptuous and intoxicating, a cruel yet heady dynamic. Soh’shoro’s relationship to other characters is interesting as well, each one compelling and distinct. Further, Soh’shoro’s development over the course of the story is fully fleshed out, allowing readers to see his progression from a young boy to a man in his own right.

All around an excellent portrait of masterful writing, Eternity’s Blade is an exceptionally absorbing read. This rich, atmospheric narrative is bound to linger with you even after you’ve turned the last page. Recommended to fantasy fans looking for a raw, stark novel unlike anything else.

Eternity’s Blade by William Collis is a fast-paced, atmospheric fantasy set in a world unlike any I’ve read before—a floating realm ruled by immortals, rituals, and war-torn prophecy. The story follows Soh’shoro, a prince whose mysterious ability to kill sets him on a path from royal life to trained assassin. What really stood out to me was the contrast between the lush worldbuilding and the raw intensity of the action. Collis blends mystical traditions with martial tension in a way that reminded me of Mistborn meets Shogun, and the result is both gripping and poetic.

While the novel is filled with explosive battles and political intrigue, it also quietly explores deeper themes like identity, loyalty, and the cost of legacy. Some of the emotional relationships felt a bit underdeveloped, but Soh’s personal transformation carried the weight of the narrative. It’s clear that this is just the beginning of a larger saga, with some questions intentionally left unanswered. If you enjoy immersive worlds, morally complex heroes, and stories that blur the line between destiny and rebellion, Eternity’s Blade is a debut worth diving into.

I received an ARC of Eternity's Blade from Netgalley.

The premise seemed interesting, but I was very confused with the worldbuilding, names, and terms. The ARC was also formatted oddly on my Kindle, so the reading experience wasn't pleasant.

I kept trying to give the story a chance to hook me, but continued to be confused by what was going on. It almost felt like I was dropped into the middle of a series with little to no recap.

There is a far off valley where life is eternal. The valley is guarded by a thick mist that is impenetrable,. The valley is ruled by an Emperor, who lives in solitude away from others, protecting a secret,

In the valley, there is no death. There is life and endless rebirth. No one truly dies. Everyone lives for eternity.

However, Prince Soh’shoro, finds a skill, a power, or a curse. He can kill. He can bring upon death, real and final death. This truth, is discovered and the Prince is kidnapped from his home. He is taken to a place where he is trained in martial arts and magic by a group of secret warrior monks. While being held by the monks, he discovers dark secrets, of the Valley, this family , and the world he thinks he knows.

The prince can save it all or he can end it all.

This is a fresh take on fantasy, that is full of action and intrigue. The magic system is unique but easy to understand. The whole story pulls you in to the world as the story is very atmospheric. The story starts off right away without any unneeded fluff or filler information, with that being said there was a bit of this book where I felt a tad lost, or maybe not fully understanding where it was going. There were parts that may be confusing to new fantasy readers or readers who are new to eastern influenced stories. However they are few and far between so i don't think that it would cause any issues with the overall plot. With that being said there is an advanced vocabulary in this story as well, there are parts that are beautifully descriptive almost poetic as well, its not a whole lot of world building all at once, it does build on everything as it goes. The characters take a bit to flush out and aside from our MMC there isn't a whole lot of overall character development.

Overall, I like it as a whole. Its a book that is clearly geared to a specific audience. Where I may not be that particular audience I did really enjoy parts of the story. My thought process is that the story would work better as a graphic novel, the visuals would be stunning and it may help to have a visual of what is going on. This story would lead to some stunning artwork as well.

Thank you NetGalley and Blackstone Publishing!

I am voluntarily leaving my honest opinion of this book.

First off, I’m so glad I had the audiobook; those names would have tripped me up for sure! That aside, this story was such a wonderful surprise. I requested it based on the stunning cover art, and from the very first chapter, I was hooked. William Collis’ writing style, his immersive world-building, layered characters, and the unique magic system all came together to make this dark epic fantasy a true page-turner.

Imagine being judged for your birth, then expected to become the hero in a war you had no hand in creating! That’s the situation Sho’Shuro finds himself in. He’s riddled with questions about who and what he really is, yet those closest to him keep the answers just out of reach. He’s also bound to wed a woman cursed with rot—her body bearing the signs of life slowly slipping away, yet he feels an undeniable pull toward her.

This book is atmospheric, exciting, and completely absorbing. When I wasn’t listening to it, I was thinking about it, and now that I’ve finished, I actually want to listen again because I’m sure there are details I missed the first time.

Political unrest, conspiracies against the government, romance, a fascinating magic system, and nonstop action- it’s all here. Brian Nishii’s narration brought every moment to life with the perfect amount of emotion and intensity, keeping me fully engaged from beginning to end.

Thank you to NetGalley, Blackstone Publishing – Audiobooks, and William Collis for the ALC of this epic sci-fi fantasy. If you’re a fan of authors like Brandon Sanderson, Pierce Brown, or Rick Riordan, you’re going to have a great time with Eternity’s Blade.

First off props to the narrator for being the one to pronounce all the names that sounded so natural in the audiobook which would have totally thrown me off if I read this book instead. Instead I got to enjoy this fascinating dark world of a decaying eternity, trapped in a valley surrounded by death mists. While everyone else is reborn in this never-ending eternity powered by the Emperor, Sho’Shuro is alone in is uniqueness of being able to kill and stop the rebirths. Cue the mad monk that steals him to make him an assassin for his own schemes that have been a lifetime in the making. You get political machinations with the murders, plus a nice tinge of horror with the princess (not sure what Sho’Shuro sees in her, but it is admirable that he loves her rot and all!) and the emperor on his throne, requiring sacrifices to continue the mists and also the mysterious beings that made the valley possible.

It felt like a rich world, lots of details that paint a picture of beauty and decay (much like the princess) and a story that drew me in to see what Sho’Shuro would do with his power to end eternity or save it. His story certainly was intriguing as he learns the truth of the valley and the outside world and the struggles as a prince to decides what he stands for amid all the other inhabitants of his land. I really wouldn't mind reading a prequel to this novel because the beings that created that valley were intriguing and I would love to know their story of ascension to being masters of time itself.

The narrator, Brian Nishii, did a wonderful job of bringing this world to life and all the characters. I think the author wrote a very strong debut and I look forward to seeing what he will come up with next, be it related to this world, or some other new horizon!

I THOUGHT IT WAS...
An interesting enough story that I don't think I completely understood. Within the mists of the Valley, Death does not exist. That changes when a boy named Soh'shoro discovers he alone has the power to kill. Stolen from his home and trained into an assassin, Soh'shoro unravels the tangled secrets of his home city and has to decide whether to save or destroy it.

I liked this story enough, but something about it felt off the entire time I was reading it. At first, I thought it was the style of the descriptive writing, which sometimes felt like it was trying so hard to be beautiful that it ended up reading awkwardly. Then I thought maybe it was because the world felt hollow and unfinished in places. But I think it's because it takes way too long to really learn what the heck is going on, and even then I still feel like I don't really know what's going on. There are things integral to the plot that I don't feel like were answered or addressed. Even if this is meant to be the first in a series, you still need to provide enough information to make the plot fully make sense.

All this being said, there were things I liked about this. The action was superb -- it was like if John Wick was fought with katanas instead of guns. I liked the Japanese-inspired setting. I also did think this had an interesting initial premise. I just wish I was able to be fully immersed in a captivating story instead of constantly being jarred out of it.

Wow! What a surprise! I absolutely loved Eternity's Blade!

I'm a big fan of Lian Hearn's ACROSS THE NIGHTINGALE FLOOR and her OTOGI series, so I'm definitely pre-disposed to this sort of historical fantasy setting. Nonetheless, I was blown away by the depth and artistry of the world building. I found myself completely captivated by the descriptions of the Court and its nobility, and the setting's strange rituals of salt and rebirth.

It takes a few chapters for the novel's plot to really get going, but quickly we come to realize that the protagonist - Soh'shoro - is unique in that he can't die, while everyone else in the Valley is immortal. This leads Soh'shoro to be abducted by an order of monks, and his training amongst them and the gradual reveals of the setting's wider secrets were my favorite part of the book.

I don't want to spoil too much, but in the second half of the book the pacing really picks up, becoming more heavily action focused as world building takes a backseat to plot. I found the climax amazing - one of the best written fight scenes in a fantasy novel I've ever encountered, and super creepy too! I also found the ending satisfying, but a little mysterious. After a day or two of thinking things through I think I've got it now. I saw one or two other reviews mentioning that they weren't quite sure if the novel was setting up a sequel, or if the reader had missed something. Definitely the latter! It's a twist ending, but it takes a bit of close reading to understand!

Overall, I loved this book. An easy five stars and a big recommendation for fans of OTOGI or SHOGUN!

Eternity’s Blade by Collis is a riveting blend of epic fantasy, character-driven drama, and high-stakes adventure. From the opening chapters, the novel establishes its tone—dark, atmospheric, and richly imaginative—while introducing a world shaped by ancient powers and fractured destinies.

At the heart of the story is a protagonist caught between fate and free will, wielding a blade tied to a legacy far older and far more dangerous than anyone realizes. Collis excels at slow-burn world-building: magic systems rooted in lore, political tensions simmering beneath every alliance, and lands described with vivid detail that brings the setting to life.

The plot balances action and introspection well. While there are intense battle scenes and sweeping conflicts, the emotional arc is what stands out most—internal struggles, loyalty tested, and the heavy cost of carrying power that others covet or fear. The pacing remains steady, with each chapter revealing new layers of mystery surrounding the blade and its true purpose.

Readers who enjoy morally gray characters, intricate mythology, and stories where the line between hero and weapon becomes increasingly blurred will find Eternity’s Blade deeply compelling. Collis’s writing style is fluid and evocative, making even the quieter moments feel charged with meaning.

Overall, Eternity’s Blade is an engaging and atmospheric fantasy novel that sets the stage for an expansive saga. It’s a strong recommendation for fans of immersive worlds, ancient legends, and protagonists shaped by destiny but fighting to define their own path.

I received this book as an ARC from Netgalley.

In a world where live is eternal and you are reborn in a beautiful floating land of salt and lilies surrounded by mists. Ruled by a mysterious ruler and follow certain rituals in order to be reborn. A single man is born able to kill and the kill is final. He is stolen away to be trained in martial and magical arts by monks. He's reborned assassin to protect against the mythical Outside, but has echoes of his lost mother. He's drawn to the doomed princess which leads to discover the Valleys dark secrets. With War looming, is Paradise worth protecting or is eternity itself must end? He has a decision as Eternity's Blade.

I was intrigued by the description and the concept of the story completely. To Live eternity in a valley surrounded by mist. The world building was great and very descriptive, it reminded a bit of Tolkien as I haven't read any of Brandon Sanderson books. Along with the feeling of Tolkien books it felt it wasn't right for me as I felt I got lost in his long detail descriptions and I felt a bit bored but again I loved the concept of the book and if it does get popular like others would be great films I would love. I would highly recommend this to my son who loves books by Sanderson by Tolkien as well as other readers who do as well. I do get asked for book recommends often as part of my job. I am glad I got a chance to read this and do hope I see more from the author for others to read.

Thank you @bibliolifestyle & @blackstonepublishing for the #gifted 𝑬𝑻𝑬𝑹𝑵𝑰𝑻𝒀'𝑺 𝑩𝑳𝑨𝑫𝑬 𝒃𝒚 𝑾𝒊𝒍𝒍𝒊𝒂𝒎 𝑪𝒐𝒍𝒍𝒊𝒔, published August 19th.

I was captivated by this gorgeous cover and couldn't help but add the audio offered to me through @netgalley to help me hear one of these beautiful fantasy names. Narrated by Brian Nishii, I was able to fully immerse myself in this otherworldly tale.

In this world, the Valley is a place of Eternity infused with salt, lilies, and rebirth. When Prince Soh'shoro discovers he has the power to kill, he begins his struggle to discover who, or what, he really is. He is kidnapped and trained to be an assassin, but he can't escape the voices of his mother and the pull of an enigmatic princess.

I was a bit overwhelmed at first with all the quick world-building and character development, but once I found my footing, and realized that death was a restart button for most, I was able to put it all together and follow Soh'shoro on his enlightenment path. There were layers to this I didn't expect, and it made me enjoy the questions it posed about purpose, sacrifice, and life eternal or not.

This was a bit out of my fantasy usual, and I appreciated the stretch. This was an accessible entry into a deeper level imagined world that seasoned readers of the genre will surely find simple, but dabblers like myself can also enjoy.

The audio/print combo was fantastic as the names of people, places, and things were much easier to capture with both senses.

I found Eternity's Blade through the Audio Book Narrator Brian Nishii, who I am a big fan of!

However, I ended up being intrigued enough by the novel's summary on Amazon to buy the book and just read it myself. I'm sure the audio book will be great too, as Brian is an awesome narrator (particularly his audio book for Haruki Murakami's The City and Its Uncertain Walls).

Anyway, from start to finish Eternity's Blade took me about two days to complete - and that's a compliment. It's a compact book that FLIES BY with absolutely amazing pacing. After a little bit of (very original) world building in the first two chapters, our protagonist finds himself abducted and trained by an order of mad monks. From here on out, the novel just blasts forward with amazing revelations, cool twists, and some really well written action scenes.

For me, the best part of the book, however, were the characters. There aren't that many (and some are cleverly re-used), but the standouts to me were both love interests (the Ang'soon Princess and Yei'an), and the creepy doctor An'na who appears in the novel's second half. I really liked how each exemplified a different aspect of the setting, and how their plot arcs intersected cleverly towards the novel's end. Also, props for making the Ang'soon Princess so sympathetic but also so eerie.

I really enjoyed this book, and can't recommend it enough! Ending is great too! A huge payoff! 5/5 stars - easy highlight for me this year!

✦ Book Review: Eternity’s Blade by William Collis

➤ 𝚂𝚈𝙽𝙾𝙿𝚂𝙸𝚂
In the floating realm of the Valley, an eternal paradise ruled by gods and warriors, Prince Soh’shoro discovers a forbidden gift: the ability to kill in a world where death no longer exists. Stolen from the emperor’s court and raised among secretive warrior monks, he becomes a weapon meant to protect the immortal order from the Outside. But as truths unravel and loyalties fracture, Soh’shoro must decide whether to uphold the cycle of eternal life or break it forever, risking the collapse of the divine world itself.
➤ 𝚃𝙷𝙾𝚄𝙶𝙷𝚃𝚂
William Collis crafts an ambitious and imaginative debut that feels both mythic and modern, blending cosmic fantasy, martial arts mysticism, and philosophical weight. The prose is vivid and cinematic, with bursts of violence balanced by moments of reflection and beauty. The early pacing can feel dense as the lore unfolds, but the story builds into a sweeping conflict of faith, rebellion, and mortality that pays off in the end. It’s a bold, high-concept fantasy that rewards patient readers who enjoy sprawling worlds, layered myth, and questions about what it means to live, and die, forever.

Do you like epic fantasy paired with great plot twists and some surprisingly literary writing? Throw in some ridiculously cool set piece action sequences? Then Eternity's Blade is for you!

The author's ability to seamlessly blend world building, beautiful descriptive prose, and intense sword fights is superb! I haven't encountered a novel that goes from evocative descriptions of mysterious courtly rituals to assassin battles quite so naturally!

For me, however, after reading the two biggest stand outs of this novel were:
1) The protagonist, Soh'shoro. You start off with a lot of sympathy for him, as he's abducted by a child to train as a monk. However, you quickly come to realize there is more going on. By the end of the novel, you're even uncertain if he really is the hero of the story! Some stellar character work here!
2) The ending! Wow! Wow! Wow! The plot twist in the last sentence took my breath away. I re-read the novel (well, more like a skim read) and was just entranced at the hidden details that make this last reveal possible. Quite a surprise to see fantasy novel end on a killer (no pun intended) note!

I just loved Eternity's Blade. Plus, it's a fast read too. I finished the book in about five sittings. Normally I like to dig into a fantasy, but in this case the tight editing is much appreciated and refreshing in the genre!

Five stars.

Book Rating: ⭐ 3.75/5
Narration Rating: 🎧 5/5

Eternity's Blade is my first William Collis book, and I’m definitely intrigued. I will be reading more from this author for sure. The world-building in this story was fascinating and immediately drew me in. The descriptions were so immersive that I often found myself completely lost in the world Collis created.

The characters took a little time to grow on me. I didn’t connect with them as much at the start, but about 30% in, I started to really vibe with them. I especially enjoyed the assassin aspect of the plot. Being stolen and raised by assassins added an exciting layer to the MMC’s story. The concept of “The Mist” was also really interesting, offering a unique approach to a population largely shielded from violence and death.

The narration on audio was absolutely fantastic. I did a dual read and listen with this book, and Brian Nishii kept me fully engaged, particularly during the action sequences. His performance added passion and depth to the characters that elevated the story.

Overall, the plot was unique, fun, and engaging. My only wish is that the characters had more depth and development early on so I could have felt more invested from the beginning.

Thank you to NetGalley, Blackstone Publication and William Collis for the opportunity to review an advanced audio copy (narration by Brian Nishii) of this book.

Eternity’s Blade followed Soh’shoro, a young prince, who lives in a Valley where life is eternal, but they are also surrounded by a deadly mist. However, those who die by Soh’shoro’s hand are not reborn, but instead die forever. Because of his immense ability, he is kidnapped and trained as an assassin and taught that he has another purpose than the one he thought.

This book explores a fun idea regarding immortality/eternity where one person has the ability to power to change that trajectory, but at times felt a little confusing about why certain things were happening. I found myself wanting more explanations and more character development, especially in the early chapters where we are just meeting Soh’shoro, his family, the princess, and the other important players. I’m hoping that in future books in this series, Collis is able to dive deeper so we can better understand Soh’shoro’s decisions.

In terms of narration, I have no complaints about Nishii’s performance. The switch between characters was easy to ascertain, and he was engaging throughout.

This book impressed me far more than I expected, especially since fantasy and martial-arts–influenced worlds are not usually my genre of choice. William Collis has created a fully realized, immersive vision that feels original, confident, and thoughtfully constructed from the ground up.

What stayed with me most are the ideas at the heart of the story: the reversal of life and death, and the unsettling way heroism and evil are allowed to overlap rather than sit comfortably on opposite sides. These themes are handled with real intelligence and restraint, giving the book emotional weight without feeling heavy-handed.

Collis’s writing is strong and evocative. The language consistently draws you into the world rather than calling attention to itself, and the sensory detail is especially impressive — sight, sound, and even smell work together to create scenes that feel tangible and lived-in. The metaphors and similes, which can so easily feel forced or silly, are precise and resonant throughout.

For a debut novel, Eternity’s Blade feels remarkably assured. It doesn’t just tell a story; it presents a complete, coherent world with its own internal logic and emotional gravity. Recommended even for readers who don’t normally reach for this genre.

Eternity’s Blade by William Collis is a breathtaking fantasy debut that will sweep you off your feet and drag you deep into a world where immortality is both a gift and a prison. With echoes of "Mistborn" and "She Who Became the Sun", this action-packed novel follows Prince Soh’shoro—stolen from court, trained as a deadly assassin, and torn between loyalty to an isolated utopia and the whispers of what lies beyond the mists.

The secluded Valley, cradled in ritual and rebirth, floats on salt and lilies beneath unbreachable mists—a setting so lush and haunting you’ll feel its breath against your skin. Each scene is vivid, atmospheric, and meticulously constructed, showing Collis’s deep love for Japanese history woven throughout this world-building masterpiece.

If you're craving fast-paced adventure, poetic world-building, and morally stark dilemmas, Eternity’s Blade delivers. For fans of high-stakes fantasy, distinctive magical systems, and emotionally striking character arcs—this novel is a must-read. Let William Collis guide you through a world where paradise might demand a price too high to pay!

This book, Eternity’s Blade by William Collis, features an intriguing, imaginative premise, offers a captivating backdrop inspired by Heian Japan, and is a gripping, fast-paced chronicle. Eternity’s Blade is a high-speed read that kept me transfixed from beginning to end. I really appreciated the intermingling of energetic storytelling with a fascinatingly distinctive sphere where being debauched is the standard practice, and only the central character Soh’shoro holds the power to kill.
As a reader, Collis did a fantastic job with an extremely well-written prose fiction narrative, featuring solid pacing and easy-to-digest, succinct chapters.
Eternity’s Blade’ combination of gloomy plotting and a stylish fictional world created a unique logic that makes the setting feel authentic and immersive. Generally, “Eternity’s Blade” is an extremely positive action-forward novel, merging depth with approachability. I highly recommend this book to readers seeking a fresh take on immortality and ambitious imagination, written by a new writer with an astonishing literary flair. The ending is amazing, and I could not wait for everything to come together. A must read.

Disclaimer: I received an advanced reader copy of this book through NetGalley and this opinion is my own.

Eternity’s Blade by William Collis is a Japan inspired fantasy set in a world without death. It’s a well written novel that shines in its style. Collis writes with often beautiful prose that oozes atmosphere and a certain level of coolness, and the central conceit of the novel is legitimately compelling.

However, the novel gets lost in its own vagueness. The worldbuilding is slippery and leaves the reader without a clear sense of the setting or its rules. For the first half of the novel, it’s hard to understand what is going on and it’s momentum is entirely carried by the prose.

By the midpoint, things start to clear up and the story starts to become more grounded, but by this point it starts to feel too little too late. The characters feel flat and archetypal, making it difficult to connect with them.

If you like style and don’t care too much about not knowing what the hell is going on, then Eternity’s Blade is just the novel for you.

Eternity’s Blade by William Collins is a unique, ambitious debut in high fantasy.

Soh’shoro’s journey—from being stolen from the courts to training as an assassin among warrior monks—was one of my favorite elements. The assassin training and magical worldbuilding were excellent, and the battle scenes were both vivid and brutal.

Where the book lost me a bit was in the convoluted politics and the characters themselves. I couldn’t quite connect with them, especially around the fixation on the doomed princess, which felt flat or perhaps as an underdeveloped relationship to me.

That said, Brian Nishii’s narration was outstanding. He truly carried the book for me—his delivery brought energy and clarity to passages that might have otherwise felt dense.

If you’re looking for unique high fantasy with intricate magic and an epic scope, this debut is worth exploring. I’ll be watching to see if a sequel builds on its foundation, if there is a sequel!

Thank you to NetGalley, William Collins, and Blackstone Publishing – Audiobooks for this ALC. I am voluntarily leaving my honest opinion.

Not What I Expected

Elegantly written.

Florid prose.

Mythical story.

Perhaps I didn't look hard enough when reading the description for this novella, but perhaps it was because the blurb didn't really touch upon the fact that this story is in the Far East Fantasy style.
I'm not much of a fan of East Asian stories, but I plodded through as the book promised something I thought would keep me intrigued, namely the fast pacing that I was seeking.
Eternity's Blade is a good book, a quick read, and a worthy addition to anyone who adores the Far East genre style, but it wasn't for me.
I couldn't sink into the novella, I found myself wondering many times what was actually happening and didn't identify at all with the protagonist.
It is a short book, but it took me far longer to finish than the books it had been compared to in the ARC reviews. I found nothing to indicate that it was written in the vein of Mistborn or Game of Thrones, both of which I thoroughly enjoyed and followed intensely.

From the moment I picked up Eternity's Blade, I was enthralled. The pacing is lightning fast, and the worldbuilding is truly unique. I absolutely loved the setting of the Valley, and its mysterious lilies-for-salt trade. The action sequences, particularly in the later half of the book, were absolutely amazing. The battle in the waterfall gardens took my breath away!

I don't often re-read fantasy, but I think this is a book I think I will definitely revisit. The author's writing is really beautiful ("Arrete ridges cascading into moraines of ice and scree" is one early example). And I definitely think there's symbolism and easter eggs I missed on the first pass. Plus, I absolutely loved the characters - particularly Yei'an and the Ang'soon princess. I was in tears during their last few scenes!

Overall, an incredible debut novel. I can't wait to read more writing by the author - hopefully he's got another book coming very soon. HUGELY RECOMMEND!

Firstly, I am so glad I was able to listen to the audiobook for Eternity’s Blade. (Thanks Blackstone for the ALC) Brian Nishii made each character unique and brought a lot of energy into this fast paced story. I’m glad I could hear the pronunciations spoken out loud as well.

For the book itself, i enjoyed the second half more than the first. The first half was a little confusing at times but I really liked the world building and atmosphere. There’s a lot of political intrigue and epic battles in this book. I always love that when I’m reading fantasy. Soh’shoro was our main character and his character growth was the true highlight of this book. He had to learn who and what he was in a dramatic way. It was an interesting book that really makes you question immortality and its repercussions. For fans of epic fantasy, I suggest giving it a read and considering the audiobook if you prefer them.

3.5 ⭐️ for the story
5 ⭐️ for the narration

No spoilers, as per usual.

In my uneducated opinion, it’s very high fantasy and whilst I enjoyed the vibe, the setting and the premise, I did struggle with names, remembering who was who, etc. However, this book was my first toe dip into what I’d class as high fantasy and the book length was great for me just beginning to expose myself to it. So this, by no means, is a negative about the book, just my lack of experience as a higher fantasy reader.

I won’t give anything away as I think this book deserves the attention of someone reading it without being spoiled the ending or characters etc, but I did love Soh’shoros journey and the world building was excellent.

I would most definitely recommend this book to others.

Thank you to William Collis, Blackstone and NetGalley for the ARC, and congratulations to William on a fantastic book.

This review is for the audio version of the book, narrated by Brian Nishii.

This was a quick paced book, with an interesting concept, about a boy who was stolen and raised to be an assassin in a valley where death and violence are unknown to the population. People don't really die, they are preserved and sent into "the mist" and their consciousness is transferred via ceremony to a waiting infant.

It's an interesting plot that kept me interested, but I feel like the characters weren't very deep. It was giving me big "YA" vibes by about the 1/2 way mark.

It wasn't bad by any means, the action was good, the plot was interesting, but I would have liked to seen more to the characters.

There were a LOT of unanswered questions, but this was clearly set up to be a series and hopefully those questions will be answered there.
