Dollycas’s Thoughts

Dotty Sayers has returned to Cotswold and has been given a great opportunity managing Akemans Auction House. Her job will be far from easy as she not only has to repair the business’s reputation, but the building needs major renovations because it’s literally falling down around them. She has been contacted to clear out the house of a recently deceased man. She hopes this will help the bottom line. She finds a couple of unusual pieces and is surprised by their value after conducting a little research.

Keya Varma, Dotty’s best friend, has a new job with the police department as a crime scene manager. It is hard to take off the investigator’s hat, but this position should free up more time for her to run the Waterwheel Café. In an interesting twist, her first assignment, the murder of a bookshop owner, has connections to the items Dotty found at her house clearance.

Inspector Lynn Lockwood has joined the Cirencester Police Station, and she is assigned to Keya’s first case. She is open to having Dotty consult on the case. So they, along with Constable Warren Sparrow and some help from family and friends, kick the investigation into high gear to get to the truth. Can they do that and stay out of harm’s way? Or will they be led straight into a trap?

I was so happy to see this series spinoff of the Dotty Sayers Antique Mysteries. Dotty has grown so much and has had many adventures, and it was time for her to come home. This story has her reconnecting with Keya, Aunt Beanie, and Norman. Zach coming with her allows their relationship to continue, as can his investigation into his family’s history, but he also finds a new opportunity at Akemans. Keya is thrilled to have her friend by her side again. I love her “Oh! toda!” moments. Ms. Tait’s characters feel so genuine, it is very easy to get wrapped up in their lives. I enjoyed the dual points of view of Dotty and Keya.

The plot of the story is full of compelling history from WWII and the aftermath, when so many treasures from people’s lives were stolen. Some of the artwork and objects have been found and returned, but the number of artifacts still out there is crazy. Dotty has had experience with a few items whose provenance was untraceable or unknown, making the items found at the house clearance of great interest to her. She also has contacts who specialize in lost wartime treasures to help with her research. I found the theme very fascinating.

I enjoyed tagging along with Dotty, Keya, Warren, and Lynn as they followed clues all around the countryside. The bookshop with all its treasures and owl theme pulled me right in. I wanted to know more, and Ms. Tait delivered. When Dotty gets an invitation she can’t refuse, the situation gets dicey, but she learns about how everything was set in motion and the motives. Secrets are revealed, as are heartbreaking histories, and then clues all fall into place for Dotty, but it could be too late.

Ms. Tait plotted this story out perfectly. She twisted history with mystery along with the happenings at Akemans and the Waterwheel Café as only she could. An Auction of Secrets is a captivating story containing engaging characters who are facing changes and new challenges, and intriguing mysteries with a historical slant. It’s another Perfect Escape from Victoria Tait.

Book 2 – A Wicket of Lives was just released. I will be reviewing it next week. Book 3 – A Pantomime of Peril will be released later this year.

I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review. Thank you to the author for providing me with an ARC.

Best Read on a Rainy Day.... or Three!
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review. I got to read this book during three days of serious rainfall and storms, and I'm so glad that I did. This book is listed as a British Cozy Murder Mystery, and it really does hit the mark. I loved being cuddled under blankets while following Dotty, Keya, Warren and Lynn during their investigation. This mystery contains historical ties to World War 2, and the lost art stolen by the Nazi forces throughout the war. Victoria Tait does a great job in using this history to enhance her story. I'm excited to see what else happens in the auction house, especially now that it has a new director and new design plans.
This is my first Victoria Tait novel, but I already know it won't be my last. I thoroughly recommend this book for anyone who needs a nice light, cozy read to curl up with!

Wartime secrets come to light

This story was jammed packed with intrigue, secrets, history, drama and murder. On a serious note as time passes it’s so important that we remember the history and the tragedy of the Second World War. While this story is of course fiction the fact that there are some ugly truths that come to light about the actions of individuals is both sad and important. As more and more of those who lived through that crucial time in history pass it’s even more important for us to remember.
Now back on a lighter note I loved the new combined format of Dotty and Keya being leads in this story. I think they compliment each other so well and we still get a blend of amateur and professional viewpoints on the case. The backdrop of WWII was fascinating to me as you may have already ascertained from my previous comments. Can we please please ship Dotty and Zach already?! I think he’s perfect for her. I loved the new direction that the crew is taking with the auction house and look forward to seeing how their plans unfold. I basically just really loved this book!

Avevo già letto Inheritance and Intrigue in the Cotswolds della stessa autrice, e ho ritrovato alcuni personaggi e ambientazioni familiari.

ENG
When Tim Reynolds asks Dotty, a clerk at an auction house, to examine her recently deceased Uncle Pete's home for valuables to sell, she can hardly imagine where this investigation will lead. Dotty finds letters, a painting, and an owl-shaped pendant. As she tries to reconstruct the history of these items, she finds herself digging into the past all the way back to the end of World War II. She uncovers hidden secrets and artifacts stolen by the Nazis that were never returned to their rightful owners.
Having already read "Inheritance and Intrigue in the Cotswolds" by the same author, I recognized some familiar characters and settings. However, the plot seems independent. There are references to earlier events, but since the present is the first book in the series, it's unclear if these are callbacks to future stories or episodes that haven't been published yet.
The plot develops slowly but nicely. It is only toward the end, through questions and research, that the truth is revealed, maintaining high levels of curiosity. Victoria Tait enriches the narrative with details. For example, when one character tells another what happened, the author provides a full account, which is often omitted in other novels. This style does not weigh down the reading. On the contrary, it contributes to a calm, yet never boring, pace.
Overall, it's an interesting read for fans of mysteries related to the past and stories that unfold bit by bit.

Dotty Sayers and Keya Varma are back investigating overlapping mysteries in this new series kickoff from Victoria Tait. Dotty is facing anxiety about Akemans Auctionhouse’s future since taking over as the manager. Business has fallen off due to previous scandals and there are structural issues with the old mill building. A house clean out offers very few items for auction, but some interesting WW2 era items including an owl pendant. Meanwhile, Keya is now a crime scene manager as well as running her cafe. Called in to cover a murder scene in a nearby town, she struggles with her new role. Slowly ties between Dotty’s client, a wealthy philanthropist, and Keya’s case become evident. Will putting the pieces together lead to more trouble for Dotty?

Fans of Ms. Tait’s Waterwheel and Dotty Sayers Antique series will enjoy this new spinoff series featuring both her sleuths. However, it’s also a great starting place for new readers. Enough background is provided about Dotty and Keya’s histories, as well as the supporting characters and the antique & auction center to bring readers up to speed without weighing down the narrative. The connections between the cases are plausible and tie in well to Zack’s interest in his own family history. The historical facts about the stolen Nazi art and treasures add dimension and interest to the story. Ms. Tait has an engaging writing style that draws you in and keeps you captivated throughout her books. So thrilled to see two of my favorite characters growing in new directions.

I loved An Auction of Secrets (A Cotswold Antique Mystery) by Victoria Tait! It’s the perfect place for a new reader of her books to begin. I’m a longtime reader of her Dotty Sayers Antique Mystery series and her Waterwheel Cafe Mystery series (with Keya Varma as its main character). This new series combines the two in the perfect way! It’s still set in the Cotswolds, and it features many familiar faces and brings newer characters into the spotlight.

In An Auction of Secrets, Dotty is contacted by a man whose uncle recently died, and he wants to auction off anything of worth. Dotty finds a gold owl pendant hanging from a small painting. She takes both, thinking they may be worth a couple of hundred pounds. However, as she and others dig deeper into these two items, secrets are revealed…and the mystery really begins!

This book has a lot of fascinating historical facts surrounding artwork and WWII. I was very intrigued by how the author worked all of this into the mystery! The plot was seamlessly woven together with all of the clues fitting together at the end. It did keep me guessing though I had my suspicions! I love the Cotswold setting, and the author really brings it to life.

I love the characters in this book and can’t wait to see what they get up to next! I highly recommend it! 5 stars!

A new direction for some familiar characters'
Dotty Sayers is now managing Akeman's Auctions. Keya Varma has completed her crime scene investigator course and continues to run the Waterwheel cafe out of the antique center. For Dotty it is a difficult road ahead as she tries to recover from the scandal that has nearly destroyed the auction center's reputation. Also the building itself is in need of many repairs. While the cafe keeps Keya busy she misses her investigations at the police station. When Dotty gets a house clearing commission she comes across a couple interesting items. When they link to a death at a local bookstore that Keya is responsible for the crime scene our two friends combine their research and investigation to solve a mystery decades in the making. The relationships between the many characters introduced through the first two series and some interesting new ones, combined with a well written plot make this series introduction a winner.

Victoria Tait has brought back Dotty Sayers in a new spinoff series. The protagonist of the Dotty Sayers Antique Mystery Series is now back as the manager of the auction house and is trying her best to revitalize the business. But it is literally falling down around her. As she tries to juggle structural damage, and a damaged reputation, she finds herself once again drawn into a murder mystery. Her latest auction consignment seems to have crossed paths with the latest murder being investigated by her friends. I am new to this author, it is only the second book of hers that I have read. But it won't be my last. Tait has created a cozy village of interesting characters and she knows how to write a good mystery. I picked up an important clue long before sleuths, but I still had the wrong culprit.

Sayers weaves this modern day cozy mystery with historical content as the mystery involves the topic of the effort to return plundered treasure taken during WWII. Although it is an important part of the story, the topic is not explored in depth.

In 'An Auction of Secrets', by Victoria Tait, we find Dotty Sayers back at Akemans Auction house, which is currently in very bad condition. Many people are complaining of falling plaster and other issues.
Meanwhile, a murder has occurred at a book seller's that Keya and her police department friends must investigate.
This story involves WW2, military personnel from that time period, and a secret that someone does not want exposed. As this involves antiques and art, Dotty, too becomes involved.
I found this story to be very well written, immersive, and well described in terms of places and events. There was a very good mystery element and the guilty party (parties?) weren't revealed until nearly the very end. And there were many suspects which made the mystery even more difficult to figure out. But even figuring out the culprit doesn't lend to figuring out the why. That part is the true mystery.

An Auction of Secrets: A British Cozy Murder Mystery is book 1 in the Cotswold Antique Mystery series by Victoria Tait.

I have been looking forward to this new series. I enjoyed Dotty and Keya’s series and am happy we get more of these characters. It didn’t disappoint! It was interesting seeing them getting used to their new jobs. The chapters are labeled ‘Dotty’ or ‘Keya’ as the book shifts between their stories. Don’t worry, they end up interacting quite a bit. I loved the historical aspects of the mystery. I suspected who was guilty but definitely not why. This was so good and I look forward to see what happens with Akemans!

An Auction of Secrets: A British Cozy Murder Mystery (A Cotswold Antique Mystery Book 1) by Victoria Tait brings Dotty Sayers and Keya Varma together in solving this murder mystery concerning stole treasure by the Nazi Regime. There is much more to this enjoyable read but no spoilers given. It does involve the Cotswold Auction House which Dotty now manages, as well as a crime scene manager, which is what Keya has been promoted to doing. Lots of clues involving several people involved but not the one committing murder.

Great new series with old favorite sleuths amateur and police professionals. Be sure to start today with An Auction of Secrets.

An excellent series starter.

Akeman's is trying to rebuild its reputation after the scandal of an expose article and Georgina's sudden departure. As the auction manager, Dottie Sayers struggles to keep the business afloat, but the building desperately needs costly repairs. A house clearance will help, but there are only a few items of value. Researching them reveals secrets. An apparently unrelated crime links them to a case, and Dottie joins forces with Keya Varma.

This promises to be an interesting series. Victoria Tait always delivers well-written stories that keep me glued to the pages from start to finish. I received a free copy, but my review is honest and voluntary.

I really enjoyed An Auction of Secrets. It was great to see Zach play a bigger role in the story as he’s a good, solid character, but I wish things would move forward a bit more between him and Dotty. Their relationship feels like it’s been on hold for so long. I liked how the book balanced Dotty’s storyline with Keya’s, giving both characters time to shine.
The book had some good twists, and like the others in the series, it’s a quick and easy read that holds your attention. I appreciate that the author clearly does a lot of research, this time into WWII history. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series!

Readers of this series will be delighted to see Dotty and Keya in the same book - and working together as well. Dotty is at Akemans again, trying to help get it back on its feet. A death and clearance turn up some interesting war momentos. Keya's job involving a different death also reveals some puzzling connections to WWII. The author tells this complicated and interwoven story well, and you are part of their different lives as Dotty and Keya pursue their goals and trade information on their investigations. The story pulls you right along, puzzling over who and why. As always, there is a satisfying ending. I'm looking for - I received an advance copy and freely leave this honest review.

Exciting start to a new series - Dotty and Keya are back and better than ever. They were good solving crimes on their own, but together they are a formidable duo. Accompanied by their partners in crime solving, they bring justice for multiple victims who are targeted for deeds done years ago. The legacy of war touches even the once sleepy Cotswolds as truths come to light that were meant to remain hidden for all time. Who'd have thought antiquing could be so exciting. Or dangerous.

Dottie works at an Auction house and while going through a deceased Man's home she finds Military items and a painting and a golden owl. While researching the items she meets a Woman who owns a bookstore and she is wearing a golden owl that resembles the one she found. The woman is found dead later and Dottie pursues the case along with her friend Keya a Crime Scene investigator. Danger is following Dottie and a strange tale of Nazi treasure is tied up with the case. So fun I recommend this book.

Once again, a fantastic book by Victoria Tait. Keya Varma is one of my favourite characters. I love her strength of character and determination to ensure her friends and family are supported while she fulfills her new duties on the police force. Twists, turns and intrigue kept me engaged from cover to cover. This is a book and a series that I highly recommend to others.

I totally get Dotty being a bit torn about her new role as well as Keya being a bit unenthused about her new role also, so seeing them end up having their jobs bring them back together again was wonderful.
This was a great mystery to start of the new series and really enjoyed the history that gets delved into so can't wait to see what else Dotty, Keya and the others get tangled up in!.

I am delighted to be part of the ARC crew, reading this new series. Good to see Keya and Doty back in action together, as they work so well together and it is also nice that they now have Inspector Lynn who is smart enough to realise and utilise their abilities and strengths to help in the mystery.

Exciting case with long shadows in the past. Looking forward to seeing more of Keya and Sujin, Dotty and Zach in action.

I absolutely adore both Dotty's & Keya's POV in this together. Keya was who got me into all these books and I'm so happy when I see her in more. I enjoyed this book too because I love learning about WWII. And I had a feeling about Matthew. The other I was quite expecting. I knew something was off with him but didn't expect that. It was a great mystery and I'm looking forward to many more.

Good read!
Nice to have Dotty and Keya moving on in their lives and still able to help each other out solving murders.
This one had me wondering for a bit, however I did have a hunch about the one character I found shady. I never would have figured out just how he was connected though.
Lots of possibilities as to what happened and a reasonable explanation as to what occured.

Dotty Sayers goes to Kingham on an assignment and meets Helen Fletcher the owner of The Owl's Nook. The murder of Helen starts a dangerous investigation with Keya Verma involved too. Buried secrets has a hand in this intriguing read which has you on the edge of your seat. The combination of Dotty and Keya enhances the story. I received this ARC copy and recommend this book to other readers .

I’ve enjoyed all of Victoria Tait’s books and love the way she has of hiving off characters and issues to create new series that link together. It keeps the stories fresh and inviting. In this series she has Dotty back at Akeman’s antiques and auction centre, dealing with the failing business with Zach as well as helping solve a mystery with Keya and her Waterwheel Cafe. Great stuff, reccomended.

I love the characters in this charming cozy. Dottie and Keya are adapting to their new roles but find themselves investigating together when two seemingly unrelated items are connected. There were some twists and turns and a lot of heart in this mystery. This can be read as a standalone.
