When your life falls apart, there's no manual for putting it back together, and Reagan Wilde has always struggled to put things together without instructions.
Back in her childhood hometown, Reagan is stuck obsessing over her recent heartbreak when a new friendship with aspiring musician, Asher Blair, takes her by surprise. Reagan leans into this new friendship, and the adventure that comes with it. Together, Reagan and Asher strike a plan to get Asher's band back together, and take off on a road trip that changes everything.
The Parts We Play is the story of surviving heartbreak, falling in love again, finding yourself, and enjoying the music along the way.
Reagan the main character is trying to put her life back together after finding her boyfriend and her best friend together. Her life is in shambles not only is she facing heartbreak from her boyfriend, she is facing loosing her best friend as well. She goes back home to stay with her parents while she picks of the pieces to her life and figured out what she’s going to do next. She finds herself unexpectedly taking a road trip with her neighbors grandson, who she’s had a crush on for years, and his band. She takes on the position of managing the band and little does she know that it’s going to change her life in so many ways. No spoilers but i did cry at the end. I really enjoyed this book, it was very well written, and easy to read. I would definitely recommend this book. You will fall in love with Reagan and her journey!
It was an honor to be an ARC reader for Honi Olmedo’s debut novel, I can’t wait to see what she writes next!
The Parts We Play is about Reagen, fresh off of a break up, looking to find a new direction in her life. When an unexpected childhood friend comes back into her life and coaxes her to join him on a new adventure, her life takes a sudden turn.
Looking for love, friendship, and a sense of purpose, Reagen navigates new obstacles and challenges, she meets new friends and passions.
I am totally going to be the outlier for this book, but here are my thoughts. I really liked the premise of this book. The pacing was spot on, and it was a good lighthearted beach read. I did like the quirky nature of the characters with lots of rom-com moments.
What I didn't enjoy, was the hard conversations and "talks" or fights the MC & her opposite had. Their decision making was not great, and logic seemed no part of conversations or how to make a relationship work. I found myself pretty annoyed at them for portions of the book.
It did have a nice happy ending that I enjoyed, but it came so late in the book, that it just didn't push it up in stars for me.
TW: mentions of infidelity Closed Door rom-com
**Thank you Honi Olmedo for sending this book for review. All opinions are my own.**
The Parts We Play is a heartfelt story about navigating heartbreak, forming new friendships, discovering your true self, and finding a fulfilling career surrounded by the right people. Over the course of 200 pages, Reagan undergoes remarkable personal growth. The author skillfully immerses us in her inner world, evoking powerful emotions—I found myself crying alongside her, rooting for her every step of the way, and feeling an overwhelming sense of pride by the end. It is a page turner and I can’t recommend enough! I hope Honi Olmedo publishes more because I can’t get over her amazing writing style!
This book was such a fun adventure that had me thinking about the characters all day long when I wasn’t reading. Reagan inspires me to be brave and do what is best for me, even when it is hard. I want to be her friend so badly! I highly recommend this book and can’t wait for Honi Olmedo to write more! She has a great voice and writing style that makes you laugh and cry and keeps you hooked on what the characters will do next. I want to go to a My Guys show and dance my heart out. I wish they were real!
1 star for bringing us on a well-paced journey with surprising turns and emotional ups and downs. 1 star for a well written ending that wrapped everything up very well. 1 star for Reagan, our main character who pulls herself together and grows so much, despite her flaws. This book is going to be an enjoyable, heartfelt read for a girl experiencing heartbreak in her early twenties. The atmosphere of live music, drinking and finding yourself is present throughout the story. Its a coming of age romance that seeks to teach you something. It was obvious to me from page one that I'm not the target audience, and that there wasnt anyone in the small cast I could relate to, and the fact they did stupid things when they were drunk was realistic, but not endearing. These characters coud be frustrating. Apart from the main three, everyone else was set dressing or obstacles. The ending really did make the book for me. Theres a very obvious change in the main character, not just because she says so, but because of the way she responds to the people around her. Congratulations Honi for writing your first book and thank you for sending this to me as an ARC reader. My opinions are my own.
This book was an emotional rollercoaster that kept me hooked from start to finish. One of the main characters had me constantly torn between love and frustration—just when I thought I understood them, they’d surprise me again. The complex relationships and unexpected twists made it impossible to put down. It’s the kind of story that lingers in your mind long after you’ve finished.
What makes this book even more special is the Spotify playlist that accompanies it. The carefully curated songs add another layer of depth, perfectly capturing the mood and emotions of the story. It’s a unique and immersive experience that makes you feel even more connected to the characters.
If you’re looking for a captivating read with a bit of everything—drama, romance, and a dash of unpredictability—this book deserves a spot on your TBR list. Trust me, you won’t regret it!
I was lucky enough to be given a copy of this book by Honi and I'm so glad I was!
This is a book about healing, self-discovery and adventure all rolled into one. I loved the pacing of the story - it had an interesting and believable plot, which I really enjoyed!
The Parts We Play was really easy to get into, I found myself engrossed in the story quite quickly. (it's hard to believe this was a debut novel). I am looking forward to reading more from this author in the future. Well done Honi!!
The Parts We Play was a quick, enjoyable read. It's a story about a young woman coming to terms with a betrayal, and how she manages to turn her life into something that she wants it to be. The focus is on the character relationships and interactions, and how the reality of life isn't always how we imagined it but somehow better. I was proud of how Reagan handled things in the end and how her character grew and learned. I'm looking forward to reading more from Honi!
This book was so cute, relatable and full of emotion! If you’d like a quick and easy read this one would be it!
Losing yourself because something terrible has happened to you to picking yourself up and finding who you truly are or what’s meant to be is something many can relate with. I believe in our lives we change so many times that we don’t know what’s right or wrong in the moment but when you figure it out it truly is one of the best feelings!
The Parts We Play had me on an emotional rolllercoaster. The book was well written, and I could empathize with the main character, Reagan, and feel all the emotions she was going through. The story is a fun read but shows human emotions in depth and how characters can react in times of stress and unexpected situations. A romance meets real-life-living, with some road trips thrown in. I can't wait for Honi's next book!
I loved it. I couldn’t get enough of it. The characters were written great. And I have a soft spot for stories about musicians. It was refreshing the main character was a band manager so it gives a different point of view from a band member. I would definitely read more by this author and I would recommend it.
I received a copy of this book via Voracious Readers Only
I’d read about this book and the author online - and saw the great front cover - and was very intrigued to read the story. I enjoyed seeing the personal growth that Reagan goes through and I also loved the music side of the story. I don’t know whether a sequel is on the cards but I’m excited to see what happens next with Reagan and also with the band.
The Parts We Play is a beautiful debut novel by Olmedo. It encompasses some of my favorite tropes including found family, and childhood friends who meet again in adulthood. It kept me engaged through the entire read, and had a satisfying ending. Highly recommend!
Beyond being a page-turner, The Parts We Play was impossible for me to put down from the second I opened it. Relatable characters, incredible storytelling, and raw emotional fill every page. I can't wait to see what this author publishes next!
