The Nightmare, Arizona Paranormal Cozy Mystery SeriesHomicide at the Haunted House
Beth Dolgner writes paranormal fiction and non-fiction. Her interest in things that go bump in the night really took off on a trip to Savannah, Georgia, so it's fitting that the Betty Boo, Ghost Hunter Series of paranormal romance novels takes place in that spooky city. Beth's young adult novels, the steampunk Manifest and the urban fantasy A Talent for Death, also have paranormal elements. Her non-fiction work includes Georgia Spirits and Specters and Everyday Voodoo.
Since Georgia is obviously on her mind, you might think Beth lives there. Well, she did, but these days she and her husband live in Berlin, Germany, with their three cats. Beth misses those mild Georgia winters and proper iced tea, but there's no reason her characters can't enjoy those things.
Beth also enjoys giving presentations on Victorian death and mourning traditions as well as Victorian Spiritualism. She has been a volunteer at an historic cemetery, a ghost tour guide and a paranormal investigator. Right now she's chronicling the best spooky spots around Europe.

Terminated at the Trailhead is the 9th book in this series. I really like this series and was excited to listen to this next installment. It was such a good one too. This one has not the usual type of mystery, yes there is a dead body again, but the mystery is also very closely connected to the search for Baxter and there is huge progress on that front. I liked seeing it all play out, the ending did leave me with some questions, but I think the next book will deal with that.
The mystery in this one was more about the ghouls and what they are guarding and how they can find Baxter, but there also is a dead body and that mystery is closely tied in with the bigger mystery surrounding the ghouls. So both mysteries kinda advance together and are tied together. It did have a different vibe than the previous books mystery wise, but I thought this worked well. This book really felt like they were getting so close and the overarching mystery of Baxter is finally getting resolved. So that was interesting. I liked seeing it all play out.
I really like reading about all these characters and all of them have their moment to shine and make appearances in this book. Olivia and Damien's romance is still deepening and I like them as a couple. It was so fun to read about all the characters again and I also liked seeing Lucy's character plot line develop a bit more.
To summarize: I really like this series and this was another great installment. The mystery is a bit different as the dead body they find ties in with a bigger mystery surrounding ghouls who are guarding something and the search for Baxter. I thought that worked well and I was eager to see it all play out. The ending left me with some questions, but I think the next book will answer those. There are lots of interesting characters and it was fun spending more time with all of them and reading more about them.
I enjoyed this book. However that is not a surprise, as I have loved the whole unique series and I am really glad to see it's not coming to an end. The author has created a special and very interesting group in the sanctuary characters and with this being book nine, they feel like old family friends. I love with each new book there is always something new to learn about one of them. I would recommend you read the whole series because while each book has a different mystery that gets solved, there is also a long running mystery throughout the series and with this book we are that bit closer to discovering it, which is why I was afraid it was coming to an end. Letting out a sigh of relief. Despite the story being full of vampires, werewolves and ghouls, this is a fun cozy mystery and there is not a fright in sight. The murder mystery (which again does get solved) was more focused around the disappearance of Baxter in this book and not much time is spent in the haunted house, it is really hard not to give away spoilers, so I will just say a must read and I can't wait for the next. The hunt for Baxter has the sanctuary residents trying new ideas. One of which has Olivia riding a horse in the state park, where she and her friends stumble over a dead body. The problem is isn't not a normal dead body, somebody has killed a ghoul and with more in the area and strange strangers in town it seems Nightmare is heating up. Why is everybody converging on Nightmare? Does it have something to do with Olivia's boyfriend's missing father and the owner of the sanctuary? I was given this free review copy book at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
This is my favorite of the series so far! We finally get a resolution to a long running situation but opens up some interesting possibilities. I enjoyed the mystery and thought the addition of the ghouls was disturbing but fun. I have one more left in the series and I hope it’s not the last one.
Alright, my friends. We have GHOULS in this here book and I CANNOT LIE every time I read the word ghouls I read it in Adam Driver's deadpan delivery way from The Dead Don't Die. I'm not proud of this (or of the fact I've seen that movie more than once because I didn't enjoy it nearly as much as I thought I would), but it does make for entertaining reading.
Anywho. GHOULS! Lots of ghouls. On the plus side, ghouls are apparently pretty easy to kill. On the downside, they're kind of gross. On the other plus side, their appearance might be good news in the hunt for Damien's father. So, you know, there's that. But also, GHOULS. Yuck.
So. Olivia and crew stumble over a dead body. This is not uncommon, at this point. What is uncommon is that the body isn't just dead, it's dead-dead. Like, twice dead. Which means the Nightmare police crew are going to have a hard time pinpointing who did it since they're unaware of the supernatural world surrounding them.
While Olivia and her Sanctuary friends work on keeping themselves and others around Nightmare safe, they're also following clues as to where Baxter might be. The hints keep piling up, but they're usually just cryptic enough that Olivia and the others have a hard time deciphering them. They don't let this stop them, mind you, but this journey to finding Baxter is definitely not a straight line. There are lots of curves and dips (and maybe some chances for hot kisses - I'm looking at you, Olivia and Damien) along the way.
I've devoured this series in no time flat and I'm VERY intrigued by what's in store for Olivia, Damien, and the Sanctuary family in the future!
When ghouls turn up in Nightmare, Olivia and her friends find themselves dragged into another murder mystery, but this one seems to have ties to Baxter’s mysterious disappearance. Once more, all the residents of the Sanctuary work together to find answers, and those answers might be just the ones they’ve been a year waiting for answers.
This book is one I’ve been waiting a while for, as Baxter’s disappearance is a large part of the storyline. We find a number of answers, as well as finding a resolution for the new murder than pops up in the course of things. It’s an enjoyable addition to the series, but the nature of the mystery at the heart of it means that it is absolutely NOT a standalone story, and it can’t be read before any of the previous books in the series so far either. Not to worry though, like all of the books in the series, this is an entertaining read, with a loveable cast of found family characters, a small hint of romance and a cosy feel to the mystery. Felipe the chupacabra steals a large portion of the show, despite not being an important (to the plot anyway) character, as per normal!
If you’ve enjoyed the other books in the series, and are waiting on answers regarding Baxter, then you won’t want to miss this book! If you’re a fan of paranormal cosy mysteries, then this is a fun, and little unusual series to read.
This is the 9th book in a unique and amazing series and this book is a fantastic addition! Something is happening in Nightmare, Arizona and it doesn't look good. Olivia Kendrick and her friends discover a body at the state part and it smacks of supernatural forces being involved. At the same time, it seems ghouls are showing up in town and that can't be good. And when there is another victim, it puts the staff of Nightmare Sanctuary Haunted House on edge and Olivia and friends have to figure out what is going on before there are more victims. At the same time, it seems these happenings may be a clue to where Baxter Shackleford, the haunted house’s missing owner is. Will the mystery finally be solved? Will the murders stop. Will Olivia and friends be able to figure it all out? This is a great addition to the series and I highly recommend not only this book but the entire series! I can't wait to see what's up next for Olivia and friends. I received an ARC of this book, but the opinions expressed here are strictly my own.
I have enjoyed this series since the beginning. The stories are interesting, and I love the friendship between the characters, especially at the Sanctuary. I've never really found the stories scary, but this one creeped me out, but in a good way! Some of the Sanctuary folks are out horseback riding on a state park trail. Olivia is not a fan. The group comes across a dead man, stabbed many times. Plus a porter house steak is nearby. It turns out he was already dead before he was killed. (Just read the book, ok?) Turns out the state park is swarming with ghouls, and they are guarding something. The friends all leave and work on solving the mystery. The scene that really spooked me was when there was a knock at the Sanctuary's door and Olivia opens it to find a ghoul standing there. That's when I yipped and dropped my Kindle. This book was very exciting with a lot of things happening. Lucy's powers as a psychic are growing stronger and it's obvious that Lucille is guiding her from "beyond." I hate to call a favorite because I love them all, but this one was more like 6 stars!
OMG what a great story! I have been reading along with the series as each new book comes out. Each book is a standalone but with an overarching story line. As with all of the prior books we get to learn more about a specific paranormal creature. This book brought us new creatures - ghouls! I have read a number of stories with ghouls and I must say I did enjoy how they were written in and dealt with. I love how all of the main characters have banded together and formed a family. They support one another in all ways. And of course they will help in solving the current murder mystery. Not really a spoiler but I did enjoy how little Lucy has taken to her communications with ghosts. Her abilities were able to provide an important clue to help further the overarching story line. Having read this story I now am hoping the next book (#10) comes out sooner than later. If you can, read the stories from the beginning so you have character and background development.
Still searching for the whereabouts of his father, Damian has traveled to other Magical towns. While away Olivia comes across a dead body. Not the usual body, but one that had been usurped to be a vessel for a ghoul. The murder weapon? A steak. Feeding ghouls is the only way one can be killed. The team from the castle pair up to search for the origin of the ghouls. Close calls, mysterious magic hunters, suspicious strangers, they barely avoid a trap set up by the ghouls.Damian returns and the assumption is perhaps what the ghouls are protecting could be his lost father. Little Lillie, the grand niece of mom, the owner of the hotel is coming into her powers. She is getting messages from her aunt Lillian. The 10 year old takes all of this in stride. Will they discover the source of the ghouls before the hunters find them? Will this offer a clue as to where the rare Phoenix, a.k.a. Damion's dad, and bring him back home? Another gripping page turning visit to Nightmare Arizona!
I love this series! Preferring forests to deserts, it took me awhile to decide to read the first book where Olivia arrives in Nightmare, AZ. From then I was hooked and eagerly await each new adventure. The people at the Nightmare Sanctuary Haunted House are aware strangers are flooding Nightmare and they aren't all tourists. When a ghoul is found dead on a trailhead in the state park, Olivia starts investigating. Is this to do with the mystery of Baxter Shackleford, owner of the Haunted House and his disappearance? Damien, his son and Olivia's boyfriend plus all the supernaturals band together to find the reason for the ghouls. Could Baxter, kidnapped a year before, be closer than they think? An exciting mystery with a thrilling ending. Possibly a new beginning for some?
While on a ride, Olivia and her friends come across a body. Although the body has obviously been murdered, it’s not a current one. It’s the body of a ghoul. While investigating, they discover there are more ghouls around but when trying to check them out discover that there are traps around. There are also some strange, suspicious people visiting town including a hunter friend of the café owner. Another body is discovered but it’s not a ghoul. The investigation is about why the ghouls, what are they guarding, who are the strange people in town and does any of it have to do with Damien’s missing father. As with all of this series, this book has a nice mystery, interesting characters, danger, suspense, some surprises, humour and the slow romance. It is an easy reading, entertaining book and I just love this series.
I absolutely love this series, I keep saying it because it's true. I look forward to each release and as soon as I get the book I dive straight in and binge until I finish. I loved Terminated At The Trailhead, this one felt different to the others...we still had dead bodies with ghouls this time but the side focus wasn't on the Sanctuary haunted house. Not that I am complaining, oh no! We got a development in the storyline and when I say I was so excited about it I mean it... I've been waiting since the beginning of the series and it was a great moment! I love how this series is developing and how new things crop up. Beth Dolgner's writing is superb and I could spend all day just reading these books.
I was getting impatient for the Baxter storyline to progress. I enjoyed the plot but this hook has a couple continuity issues. The three vanished girls are mentioned, when in previous books it is four vanishing girls. Olivia also states that the phrase the sanctuary uses she had heard once before when it has been used several times within her hearing before. The only continuity issues I have noticed in the previous books was when the day off flip flopped from Tuesday to Monday and then back again. I will continue to read this series although now that I have binged it, I’ll have to wait until June for the next installment!
Audiobook: I was entertained by this book as much as the others in the series. I enjoyed trying to unravel the complicated mystery. I appreciated the diversity of the paranormal beings which abound in this series. I liked that the book had many twists and turns. and that I never knew where the story would flow. I enjoyed the humor. I liked the characters. I thought Petrea Burchard's narration was great, and her performance added to my enjoyment of the story. I was given a copy of the audiobook. I volunteered, without financial gain, to post this review which reflected my honest opinions regarding this audiobook.
I have adored this series from the first book, and I can’t believe we are already at book nine. In this latest, everyone is still on the hunt for Baxter, but when a ghoul is found “killed,” Liv and her friends need to find out what is going on. I still just love all the characters in the book, and I’m always happy to be back in this universe. Reviewing this one is a little hard because I can’t say too much about what happened. However, I can say that I really waffled on what rating to give this one, but I decided on a four because I’m a little put out about something at the end. LOL! Recommend. I was provided a complimentary copy which I voluntarily reviewed.
"Terminated at the Trailhead" is Book 9 of the Nightmare, Arizona Paranormal Cozy Mystery series, written by Beth Dolgner. This is one of those series that I absolutely love. This episode has Olivia, Damien, Mama, and most of the Sanctuary Haunted House family searching for Damien's father, Baxter, as well as a treasure trove of ghosts and other supernatural beings while also wanting to know why hunters, magicians, and ghouls are suddenly inhabiting Nightmare, Arizona. Lucy ) Mama's 10 year old granddaughter), as well as the real estate agent, Emmett, also have spiritual connections to this case. I gave this book 5 stars. I received an advanced reader's copy via the author and BookFunnel, and this is my honest and voluntary review.
Another rocking great read. The hunt for Baxter is on again, prompted by ghouls and dead bodies, while Lucy is getting used to speaking to her dead great aunt and when someone else dies on the trail, it helps lead the way to finding Baxter. Olivia and Damien together are getting stronger too, she uses her skills to help save her life and to help find Baxter, and the ghouls are the reason they find him. It's all a great read and a good story of friendships helping to make a positive world. Love it.
Really fun series with a great cast of characters. I've enjoyed all of the books in the series and this one is no exception. The team goes on the hunt for ghouls that have shown up in Nightmare, allegedly to guard a treasure. The question is who is controlling them and who murdered the body found on the trail. A few surprises as to who else in the town is "tuned in" to the supernatural town residents. A long arc in the series finally gets a few answers. Olivia, Damien, and Lucy all seem to be getting some power increases - especially from each other.
I love the way unique super natural beings that aren't seen very often are featured as a well formed family unit in this series. We have romance, but nothing that would take away from a clean cozy. The mystery never feels forced, though Olivia often sort of falls into the solution as amateur slueths often do. All in all, it is an enjoyable series for paranormal mystery fans, and a light and fun "pallet cleanser" for heavier subject readers such as myself. I enjoy them enough to have read every one so far.
I honestly can't say enough good things about this latest book in Ms. Dolgner's Nightmare, Arizona Paranormal Cozy Mystery series. Once again, the supernaturals at the Sanctuary must band together to face a new threat to their home. Ghouls have arrived in the state park near Nightmare, there are also some shady new faces in town and there has been a murder of a human at the same park. Olivia and friends must work together to solve the murder and find a secret treasure. Twists, turns and suspense kept me turning the pages until the end.
Nightmare Sanctuary with Oliva and a fascinating group of others still has the owner missing, the Dire Market (where you can get things you're not supposed to get), and a bunch of ghouls are just part of the mix of things going in in this addition to the series.
One of the reasons I like this series so much is that you have such interesting characters who, despite being quite different types of beings, all get along quite well and will band together to deal with any threat to the people in the town or in the sanctuary.
Again we have Olivia and Damien hunting down killers while continuing to search for Damien's father. The whole paranormal crew at the haunted house and Damien's aunt are helping in the search for the murderers and who is making ghouls! I can't tell you how much I love these characters and the trouble they always getting into. Ms. Dolgner keeps outdoing herself with each book in this series! Can't wait 'til the next one! I was given this arc for an honest review.
I have fallen in love with this series !! This was such a great book. , each book introduces more wonderful characters ! Beth Dolgner is such an amazing writer, if you have not read this entire series or her other books, please go check them out. You will definitely not be disappointed ! Can’t wait to read the next book in the series , Nightmare Arizona is Awesome !!
I do love a good cozy mystery and this series is full of them! This latest addition pulls you in as Olivia and co come across a dead body and the mystery begins. It’s an exciting and fun read with some incredible characters set in this incredible supernatural town called Nightmare in Arizona. New characters are introduced and we get to see some old friends as we join this journey that is brimming with a little laughter and a whole lotta twists and turns.
Ghouls are showing up in Nightmare, and they are icky! They are also starting to show up in some strange places. Good thing Olivia and the rest of the Sanctuary team are on the case. Plus they are also still looking for Damien’s father, Baxter. Hopefully all the clues they are gathering will help find him.
What a great book! I can’t believe the series is almost finished!! *sniff*
Loved this book but then again I love the whole series. The cast of characters are wonderful, like family and each book's story is well written and grabs you so you have to read it in one sitting. The back story of Damien's search for his father Baxter is great too and that successfully comes to an end in this book but not the end of the series, thankfully. I highly recommend this series and I can't wait for book 10.
I love a cozy paranormal mystery and I love this series. When I tell you I ate this book up... delightful. This was probably my favorite of the series so far. It has a little bit of everything and what a fun little ride it was. The bad guys in this series can be predictable but, my view, a twist isn't what I'm really looking for in a cozy mystery. It was warm, charming, funny - that's what I look for in my cozies.
Really enjoyed this book. It was a tear jerker. A ride on a horse is not Olivia's favorite thing to do. She promised to go. As they are riding they come across a dead body. This starts off a mystery and more dead bodies. Ghouls, ghosts and many other supernatural characters. A few eyes will be opened.
