In the light-soaked lands to the north, Amyrah Cantar experiences a reprieve from the Shrouded beasts that haunted her steps. But prejudice roams freely outside of the Vale, and her gift of light is resented even where people have never tasted living darkness.
As the shadows begin to advance and the difference between dark and light become harder to distinguish, Amyrah must decide if she is willing to pursue the answers she craves to prevent the loss she never wants to experience again—risking her own heart in the process.
Thrown into the fray by forces beyond her control, she questions if belonging to a different world means she must abandon the one that made her who she is.
Andrea Renae grew up as an only child, often either lost to her daydreams or finding new things to create with her hands. As an adult, writing became a way to process countless beauties and hardships while solidifying her hope in the Author of it all.
When her fingers aren’t clacking keys, you can find her teaching her children, playing piano, painting with watercolors, knitting sweaters, or practicing for her inevitable fame on the GBBO. Her favorite activity, however, will always be spending time with her family, her friends, and her goofy goldendoodle, Charlie.
I received an early copy of this novel from the author in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Where Darkness Dwells is one of the most profound novels I’ve read in a long time, and I was honored to have the chance to read its sequel, There Bleeds the Light, before its publication date. There Bleeds the Light is packed with so much rich food for thought. There were even more deep spiritual observations and insights than were found in Where Darkness Dwells, which I find pretty astonishing. Both books have made an indelible impact on my mind and my heart. Not only do they entertain, as all good fiction must, they encourage deep contemplation and point back to the Author of life, as all good stories should.
There Bleeds the Light picks up exactly where its predecessor left off. That being the case, I’m not going to say anything about the plot or the characters, as that might give away some of the twists in the first book. So instead, I’ll mention some of the aspects of the novel that stood out to me the most in terms of structure, craft, and content.
This is fiction that is true, because it underscores Truth. Right off the bat, there is some great grappling with—and truths about—faith. About its strength or failure during hard times, about our interaction with it, and even about ministry and the dangers of accepting accolades that are deserved by Someone else. The overarching themes of the story were wrestling with your faith when it is tested, and learning to rely not on yourself or your gifts but the Creator of both. There’s a focus on coming to the end of yourself, of learning that you cannot fix your own shortcomings, that resonated strongly with me.
In terms of craft, I love Renae’s voice and style. The novel kicks off with some gorgeous poetic verse as the opening of Part One. It was so lovely that I immediately had to read it my mom and my husband. The prose is incredibly lyrical, almost achingly pretty in places. The very first chapter swept me away. There’s something about the combination of lush, lovely writing, the almost fairy tale vibes, and the deep spirituality permeating the story that reminds me of Tales of the Goldstone Wood by Anne Elizabeth Stengl. As that series is among some of the most impactful fantasy I’ve ever read, that’s some of the highest praise I can give!
The setting of the Vale is just as dark yet lush as I remembered from the first book, but that is now joined by a handful of new settings and new groups of characters. I was again reminded of Old Testament Judaism, but in different ways. Here, I was reminded of the Pharisees in Jesus’s day, for reasons that I will leave other readers to discover from themselves.
The spirituality of this series mixed with the storytelling style makes for an interesting allegorical tone without the story being a fully realized allegory. I appreciate that blend. There’s something both classic and fresh about the combination. I can see myself returning to this series often, for the spiritual insights alone. At last count, I had well over a hundred passages highlighted, so I can revisit them easily. The faith element was absolutely my favorite aspect of There Bleeds the Light, and was perhaps even more strongly and sharply presented than in Where Darkness Dwells.
I did have just a couple of issues with the book as a whole. There is still some of that formality to the style that I mentioned in my review of Where Darkness Dwells. There are still some unnecessarily uncommon word choices, like "cachinnation" instead of laughter, "pugnacious" instead of quarrelsome, etc. Some of the in-world terminology can be confusing, especially when used in great abundance within a particular scene or conversation. But as there’s a really handy glossary in the back, that last issue is wholly forgivable. Also, the pacing and plot progression leave something to be desired. The story itself gets a bit lost under the wonderful spiritual elements. I found myself bogged down, and I think the story would have been a good deal more propulsive had it been edited down by a hundred pages or so.
While there is still much to be resolved in the next installment, there was still that level of satisfied contentment that I crave at the end of any book. I feel like series often have a tendency to manipulate their readers by ending with a cliffhanger, something so wholly unsatisfying that readers will pick up the next installment immediately. I much prefer those that have the confidence to give readers something fulfilling at the end of each novel and trust those readers to come back for more of the story. My loyalty is much more freely given to an author who makes me feel valued, not emotionally blackmailed. The ending here was lovely, and yet I cannot wait to get my hands on the next book.
I am so enamored with this world Renae has created. The physical manifestation of darkness and light and the struggle between the two rings incredibly true. I felt so fed by Song of the Solas, which is rare when it comes to anything outside of Scripture. Andrea has a beautiful mind, a beautiful gift, and a beautiful grasp on the Source of that gift. Her novels feel like ministry in its purest form. I feel so blessed to have found her writing, and I cannot wait to see where she takes this story next.
Renae dives deeper into the conflicting souls and hearts of humanity in this second book of the Song of the Solas trilogy. With haunting and lyrical language that highlights the melancholy and beautiful world, a question keeps rising to the surface: where does darkness truly dwell?
We are reminded why seeking light can come at a cost, but a cost that is worth every dark and dangerous valley we pass through.
Reading any story by Renae is like curling up in your favorite cozy spot. This book is filled with high stakes and twists and turns, but there is an underlying hope and promise that goodness will prevail. And I’m so looking forward to seeing how it all comes together in the end!
“Darkness is everywhere we go, in every heart tha’ we meet, in every corner of this world. I choose to trust the One who is capable of bringin’ beauty from corruption.”
This book! I loved it. There Bleeds the Light is truly a book to savour. The story is filled with moving prose, a plot that keeps you guessing, characters you want to hug (and also sometimes shake!), and it’s all grounded in Biblical truths.
There are a few new characters in this book, the second in a trilogy, and they add a richness to the story. The characters’ hurts and emotions were so real and authentic. My heart ached for Belwyn in particular as he grappled with how his life has changed since meeting Amyrah, and where he belongs now. The characters were so relatable as they battled within themselves to do the right thing, to trust God, to not fall back into old habits. But when they did fall, they picked themselves back up and sought the Light once more.
I particularly loved how Renae wove truth and hope throughout each page of There Bleeds the Light—from conversations between characters, to the imaginative solas, to the plot itself. The Biblical allegory is beautifully present in her story. An inspiring read! *I received an ARC of this book. This is my honest review and all opinions are my own.
I’m not okay 😭 this book was like a mirror to the soul and a powerful one at that. Also Andrea’s prose is breathtaking. By far, my favorite book of the year!
“I don’t know if I’ll always win against the shadows inside me, or if I’ll survive the journey south, but I might be able to trust in the one who has put his mark on my soul, who chooses such insignificant creatures as these to prove his promise.”
There Bleeds the Light expands our view of the world of Atsun and introduces more fascinating locations and characters. I am truly in awe of the world-building and beautiful prose throughout the book. Andrea Renae is a gifted writer with an incredible story to tell in the Song of the Solas trilogy. The Biblical imagery and symbolism are exquisitely crafted.
This installment in the series holds more surprising reveals and twists. The ending is so satisfying and also sets up nicely for the next book with a big reveal. I highly recommend this to fantasy fans who are looking for incredible depth, clean romance, and life-giving themes. Now we wait with great anticipation for book three!
A tremendous thank you to the author for a complimentary e-ARC. All opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.
This book touched my soul. Months after reading it I am still emotionally effected by this book and struggle to find the right words to concisely describe how I feel. This review is a long itme coming.
The light, the darkness, the hope, the struggle. Falling in love with some characters while others creep you out. Some choices just endear them to your heart, while others make you cry from the pain. It's all there.
I did not immediately love all the main characters, but I didn't dislike them either! One in particular was simply not as relatable to me, but in the end I still rooted for her. I appreciated the touch on the budding romance introduced in the first book and how they deal with very real temptations.
All of the character interactions were just so life-like. I don't mean that there's dark realism or anything that makes it a bad candidate for escapism, but rather that it is so easy to simply believe this book and be immersed in it because the author truly knows how the world was made to run. The truth in this book simply seeps out of it and into you so that upon returning it to the shelf you are left reflecting on your own life. There was one character in particular who drove this home for me with some heartbreaking choices. I realized that we are all, in a sense, like this character. The Christian life is so very hard at times and we all display the same weakness. There are also some absolutely beautiful and adorable scenes in there that went straight to my romantic heart (romantic generally speaking, not that each scene was romantic).
The unique formatting of the book being in parts each with a title page and a poem is a nice touch. In reading the first book I mostly skimmed the poems because I have a hard time believing such additions are beneficial, but in my reread of it and in reading this one I found them to be beautiful.
I am reserving my star rating for when I have read the third one, but I am thinking it will be a solid four stars. According to my evaluation system, this is a favourite read, one I return to again and again. I do not remove stars from books, but rather each book begins at zero and earns stars. So it is incorrect to read this review looking for the defect that made me "remove a star."
The way I needed this book/series…the way God brought this series to me at the time I needed it…the healing he has done through this book…is exactly what this series is about.
This second book is better than the first, continuing the story and expanding the world in a straightforward and necessary way — not necessary in that the world needed to be expanded, but in that everything that happened was important to the story, not just fluff for world building’s sake.
Not surprised by the ending but surprised that there isn’t a third book? Seems like there could be one….
Wondering how I will continue life without Amyrha and Belwyn and sola. I’m just now realizing this gives Narnia vibes, and I’m not mad about it.
At first, I struggled with the main characters. All of them were being pretty annoying honestly. 😅 But I realized that was kind of the point as they were going through this journey of faith, courage, acceptance, and total surrender. The biblical truths dropped all throughout are so spot on, even in a fantastical world like this. That ending?! Ugh! 😩 I looked forward to this book since I finished the first in the series - and I’ll be looking forward to the next one too!
Content: Mild overall! Mild language (“whores”, implied cursing or made up curse word), injuries & death, prostitution and sexism
This is the most beautiful series I’ve read in a long time! I can’t wait for the next book and for my girls coming up to read them. There’s so much in these pages and I could never do justice all the things I want to say about them. Read these books. You won’t regret it one second!
I really enjoyed reading the continuation of this story. I loved the twists and turns the plot took throughout the tale. The writing was great as expected, and the book was clean with no curse words or graphic violence or anything like that at all. I also appreciated the faith themes and the flaws shown in all the characters. I did think the ending was a little too quick and easy, but I'm looking forward to reading the conclusion of this series to see what happens next!
I was blown away by There Bleeds the Light. Between the world-building, magical prose, and realistic characters with raw struggles, Andrea Renae weaves a breathtakingly vivid story about light in the darkness. I found my own personal misgivings splayed out on the page, worded and kneaded and breathed in such a way that spoke of healing amidst turmoil. Andrea is a wonderfully talented author, and I wholeheartedly believe There Bleeds the Light will bless every reader who turns these pages.
Now for my unofficial review:
I cried. I love this book. It may be my favorite read of the year so far. Everyone needs to read this series. Literally SO GOOD!
I was super excited to be able to beta read There Bleeds the Light. I wanted to see what paths and choices Amyrah and Belwyn would take. And of course I wanted to see what happened to the characters you love to hate. What I wasn't expecting was to connect with one of the new characters! I think Seyla is now one of my favorite characters. I cannot wait for book 3!
The second installment of the Song of the Solas was just as beautiful as the first.
Watching Amyrah and Belwyn struggle to make sense of the world outside the Vale was bittersweet. It highlights the truth that there is darkness EVERYWHERE, not just places that have embraced it. And, darkness has many different forms. Sometimes its presence is obvious and sometimes it is nuanced and harder to spot.
The journey Amyrah went on with Holden, including everything she learned about her extended family and her mother, felt so right. I love Belwyn, but Holden was exactly who Amyrah needed beside her to make those discoveries.
The imagery at the end of the book was simply stunning and took my breath away! I look forward to reading the final installment whenever it comes out!

𝘘𝘶𝘰𝘵𝘦𝘴 “My own father was often plunged into terrible lows as he battled depression, and I never knew how I would find him. His sickness may have not been visible on the outside, but it was every bit as real.”
“Shadow lies at the heart of all people, more visible in some than in others. It isn’t the presence of that shadow that should frighten you. No, much more alarming than the darkness is the absence of a war against it.”
“ ‘What use is that if I can’t defeat the wickedness that dwells inside me?’ . . . ‘Foolish girl. No one can. That’s why we leave it to the Highest. What you can do is go where he leads and trust that despite the mess you are, he can and will work his splendor’ .”
𝘚𝘱𝘰𝘪𝘭𝘦𝘳 𝘍𝘳𝘦𝘦 𝘙𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘪𝘦𝘸 Okay, so this book was 𝘩𝘦𝘧𝘵𝘺–I’m not gonna lie. It took me about eight weeks to get through reading at least twenty-minutes everyday. BUT! It was beautiful! However, I do wish that she would have separated Seylah’s story into a novella or something. I loved reading about Seylah, but it was so far removed from the main plot line that it was almost distracting at times. There were essentially four different stories being told at one time, with the long chapters, it was hard to remember what all was happening at times.
But, again I say, it was beautiful. The allegory is *chef’s kiss*. Andrea has a way of taking something so dark and making it feel so hopeful while also encouraging my faith through a fictional work.

I hate to be the first one to give this book less than 4 stars, but do note that I use the Goodreads rating scale where 3 stars = "I liked it."
I thoroughly enjoyed reading There Bleeds the Light, but throughout felt that something was lacking, keeping the book from its full potential that I totally believe Andrea Renae is capable of. This book is well worth reading still!
Plot: Excellent.
Pacing: A little slow; the book is hefty at over 500 pages. I think what slows it down was how much inner wrestling and conversation there was on faith topics--something I'm glad was in there, but was much more overt in this book in a way that I think detracted from the story. But, I think this is very much personal preference; I like allegory and faith to be more subtle in stories, more Tolkien than Lewis.
Characters: I dearly love so many of the characters. Belwyn is the most interesting to me in his struggles and arc, but Holden is my favorite.
I love first person POV books and think that multiple POVs is a powerful writing tool. I do think that there are too many in this book, though, and that led to the book dragging some as well as characters' struggles being less distinct.
I am curious as to where Seyla's character arc will land. She didn't fit as well into the story world for various reasons, but I withholding any specific comments until I see what happens with her later.
I think it’s fitting that I finished There Bleeds the Light, the second installment in Andrea Renae’s Song of the Solas trilogy, while sitting in a beam of sunlight. This book shines light into the darkest places—a reflection of hope, beauty, and truth that shines long after the final page.
Renae’s world-building expands in breathtaking ways in this sequel, taking readers beyond the familiar Vale and into lands filled with new challenges. This story feels—dare I say—even more epic than Where Darkness Dwells (an amazing book in its own right!), with grand stakes, surprising twists, and a perfect blend of adventure, romance, and suspense. Every chapter held me captive.
The addition of new character perspectives adds depth to the story, drawing readers into the hearts of characters facing intense physical and emotional battles. I felt my own heart racing alongside them as they confronted self-doubt, fear, and darkness at every turn.
Renae’s gift for weaving beautiful prose with profound truths and pulse-pounding fantasy shines here, creating a read that’s both action-packed and deeply moving. I can’t recommend this book enough and am eagerly awaiting the third in this unforgettable trilogy.
“After darkness, light.”
I received a free ARC of There Bleeds the Light prior to its publication in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
It is difficult to put into words how incredibly beautiful this book is. But that one word might just encapsulate it.
Beautiful.
The prose, the imagery, the world building, the fantastical creatures, but most of all the characters and the golden threads of faith woven into every downstroke of the pen (or keyboard). The characters are beautifully broken, their struggles and doubts and fears utterly gut-wrenching and at the same time filled with unmistakable Hope. Andrea is a master of threading deep Gospel truths into her writing, and I found myself struck to the core by her wise and faithful characters, tears falling freely as my heart drank in the beauty of this story.
Book 1 was an enchanting set up. Book 2 is a thrilling continuation. I cannot wait for Book 3.
THERE BLEEDS THE LIGHT is a Young Adult Fantasy novel perfect for lovers of character-driven stories, multiple points-of-view, beautiful imagery, and Gospel-rich themes. It is the second book in the Song of the Solas Trilogy.
This second book in Andrea Renea’s Song of the Solas series continues the stories of the compelling characters we met in Where Darkness Dwells. It picks up seamlessly from the first book, richly expanding the world and introducing new characters. In the first book, our characters discover their world of darkness is not the only one; beyond the borders, there are lands bathed in light. In this book, they venture into the light, only to find threads of darkness still find their way in. The Christian themes of dark and light, good and evil, resisting sin and surrendering to sin are clear, but not preachy, and the fantastical settings and fascinating creatures are so delightful to read that it never once feels like, “here’s your bible lesson.” There’s romance, conflict, adventure, action, betrayal, failures, and twists. While I loved seeing the original characters facing challenges and growing, I REALLY enjoyed the new characters. I particularly loved Seyla’s storyline and can’t wait to see how it plays out in book three. Highly recommend this lovely, atmospheric series!
“When people love darkness more than light, when they grow weary of fighting against the all-consuming shadow, it is then that they have become servants of Érechlys. But the one who sees the stain in herself and finds her soul in anguish because of it truly is—can only be—a daughter of Elyōn.”
Have you ever been reading a book and wonder how the author managed to come up with such an intricate and meaningful story and then managed to tell it in such a beautiful way? Well this is what Andrea has made me wonder. This book was just as good as the first one. Watching my favorite characters grow and change was so exciting and then she added more characters that I fell in love with and was equally invested in. I loved the relatable lessons of light vs darkness and the fact that we have actively choose one or the other. Life is not all black and white and sometimes we have to choose light and do our best to push against the dark!

As annoyed as I am to be sick, I am so grateful to be couch-bound so that I finally got to finish this one. Renae’s second book in the Song of the Solas Series did NOT disappoint! I finished the first book in early November, and you better believe I was delighted to find out I didn't have to wait too long for the sequel.
Beyond the suspense and the mystery, there is a lot of depth to the storytelling and the characters. I found myself relating to each of them in their own way. And like all good fiction should, both of these books have had me thinking about my own reality differently. I have darkness in my heart, but also light. I have grappled with deep anguish in this world. Some days, it still seems pretty hopeless. My soul needs stories like these ones, that remind me to look for the glimpses of light in this life, in others, and in myself. Because they are there, thanks be to God.
I had the privilege of beta reading this book back in May, and can I say I'm still thinking about the themes to this day?
I love love love how Andrea takes us deeper into the lives of Amyrah, Belwyn, Wenha, and even introduces new characters that feel like they have been there from the beginning. Everyone has to confront the darkness, both around them and within them, but all in such different ways. There were so many twists and turns that kept me up late reading this book, and it's definitely one I'll need to add to my physical bookshelves! The allegorical themes are even stronger and more complex in this book, even though the characters themselves are unsure of where the darkness truly lies.
I know my review here is a bit all over the place but I just really enjoyed this book, and I can't wait to see the next one!! XD
This book is a fantastic continuation in Andrea’s series, The Song of the Solas. It’s a strong second instalment, picking up immediately where book one ended. The world building expands tremendously, and the new characters introduced are wonderfully delightful (or wonderfully horrifying… in the best way). The book also continues the strong, overt spiritual themes the series began exploring in. And it’s beautiful.
It’s always hard knowing what to expect from a second instalment in a series, but There Bleeds the Light does not disappoint. It exceeded expectations in the expansion of the world and where Andrea took her characters. Questions the first book left us with were given answers in this second book.
And while this second book leaves itself open to the future, third book, the ending of this book leaves readers satisfied.
The last third was my favourite and so delightful.
There Bleeds the Light by Andrea Renae is a truly breathtaking continuation in the Song of the Solas Trilogy. From the first page, the light of Christ and the beauty of the Holy Spirit shine through.
This book will take you on a journey through light and darkness, joy and heartache, leaving your heart full and your emotions stirred.
Andrea Renae’s picturesque writing brings a vivid world to life, brimming with mystery, breathtaking imagery, and meaningful truths. As Amyrah’s journey unfolds, readers will find themselves drawn deeper into a story that reflects on faith and identity in the most powerful way.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves character-driven fantasy, especially YA readers and those looking for Gospel-rich themes.
I kept putting off writing this review, because I don't know how to do this book justice. I love it so much. My favorite part of Andrea's writing is her gorgeous prose, and she hit the ground running with that from page 1. Her characters are deep, flawed, and believable. The emotions are intense without feeling overdone at all. I loved the transcendent themes of light and darkness, hard choices, regret, forgiveness--all dealt with in real, raw, non-preachy manners. I just don't have the words to explain how these books touched my soul. There's just such a deep peace here, even through dark, tragic struggles. Bring tissues. I absolutely cannot wait for book 3.
From the moment I picked up "Where Bleeds the Light" I could not put it down. I loved watching the characters develop through their stuggles, and the way that they go to Elyōn for wisdom and comfort was a sweet reminder for me to do the same with the Lord. The way that Andrea Renae weaves Biblical themes throughout her books is beautiful and inspiring. I am always on the lookout for clean books, with a driving storyline. I enjoyed how there were elements of romance, but that wasn't what the book revolved around. I recommend "Where Bleeds the light" for those looking for strong biblical elements, adventure, fantasy and clean romance!
After reading book one of this series, I knew I had to read the second. I got it as soon as possible and read it in a very rapid period, eager and heart literally pounding. I was not disappointed. This novel is as much of a masterpiece as the first, with prose, characters and plot so intricate and beautiful you become the characters and live in their realms. The atmosphere is my favorite part. It's so easy to imagine. This story is packed with truths and lessons so beneficial and wisdom so Biblically inspired you can be certain Elyon has given Andrea this gift because He knows she can glorify Him through it. A true marvel of literature and a masterpiece altogether. Thank you, Andrea!
I was so excited when this book came out and it didn’t disappoint. It took me awhile to read simply because of the holidays and illnesses. The continuation of the story from book one and getting to know the characters better made this book so wonderful. Somehow I didn’t know this was going to be a trilogy, but it became clear towards the end that there had to be more. I am now anxiously awaiting book three to see how things resolve. I highly recommend this book to those who like fantasy but are looking for something that has a Christian message and no language or spiciness.
Reading Andrea Renae's work is truly an immersive experience. Her books aren't ones to gobble up in one sitting, but rather read slowly, deliberately, allowing the lyrical words to seep into your bones. There Bleeds the Light is best read with candlelight, a warm drink in your hands, and the coziest blanket you own wrapped around you. In a chaotic world, her voice is a gentle nudge to slow down and look deeper.
