The Queen Thief is the fast paced, thrilling steamy conclusion to Madeline Te Whiu’s debut trilogy. The Soul Thief trilogy follows Telium, a once feared assassin as she embarks on an adventure full of love, heartache, revenge, retribution, and most importantly self-acceptance. This story was absolutely unreal, you could honestly feel the love and devotion that went into writing this beautiful novel. The maturity and level of writing is outstanding which made the end to Telium’s story very compelling and emotive full.
One of my favourite parts about this book was the beginning. Paxium was not present for a good chunk, and it left you to see the independent side of Telli, (Yes, I LOVE Paxium don’t get me wrong, but seeing such female empowerment was such a power move). It really showcased the relationship that had been developed over book two, and how these bonds aren’t dependent on each other but instead enhance and aid each other. For this I have mad respect for Madeline, for not only making a badass female character that is imperfectly perfect, but for also giving us that suspenseful enemies to lover’s romance. One of the other aspects that really jumped out to me while I was reading, were the glimpses into the past. You have no idea how much this was needed. It helped explain so many fractures, which helped Telli slowly heal as the past revealed itself.
As we discuss Telli and her journey it is very important to note that she is very selfless, even if it almost kills her. This is more than evident and had me sobbing from chapter 52-54, as we learn what she must do to save her kingdom, what she was born to do; “Always a pleasure doing business with you, daughter of mine.” The relationship between Telli and Pax grows more than ever as this story continues and is beautiful to watch as she walks the line to acceptance with Pax every step of the way. We cannot ignore that while they are wholesome and give you the ‘awwww’ happy sighs, they also have a very passionate connection. There are multiple instances that will have you fanning your face from their sexual tension, but we all saw this coming right… all I’ll say is chapter 42. This book is definitely a slow burn, it is tantalizingly slow, seductive and everything you’d want in this epic conclusion.
While reading this book, the number of times I gasped at the twists and turns and the now obvious easter eggs trailed through the previous books left me shook. This book highlighted what ends Telium would go to for peace not just for the late Siren Queen, but for the Assassins, and the whole of Alkoria as she continued to put them first through numerous personal sacrifices, ‘The People’s Queen.’
“It’s the royal bell…To welcome the Queen home.” ‘The assassins amongst them go further, taking a knee in front of their Lord and Queen.’
This excerpt above had me squealing, crying, let’s be honest… even threw the book. It shows the power one holds by showing true devotion and honesty to their people as Telli fought for what was right continuously.
I wish we got some closure on the relationship between Telium and the goddess Tenebris as they are so intricately intertwined, but I loved the twists involving the princes of the under-realm. I’ll leave that there so you readers can still have a suspenseful read.
I also wish the character Ariel could have been written better into the storyline. Their representation in this novel was good but could have been better. The explanation part was unnecessary and drew attention away from the story when it wasn’t needed as Ariel has been apparent from book one. No special treatment needs to be warranted to characters and people who identify this way, just as you wouldn’t with Paxium or Telium’s character, especially as I quite enjoyed reading about them.
Setting that aside, as we approach the end of the book it gets very emotional. This book ended up being almost 700 pages long, yet the ending still felt a bit rushed, I was not prepared for it to end. That being said the last 200 pages tied up the story beautifully, not just for Telium but also for her companions. One of these companions has held a soft spot since day one, Kya. Her devotion and admiration for Telium after everything is breathtaking, and after Kya’s personal struggles it is awe-inspiring to read about her strength and infectious joy. The found family is more than evident at this point as Telli has found her family, her people to share the lows and highs with.
Lotte…. My heart shattered and repaired itself all at once. A lot happened with Lotte, both bad and good. Honestly, I’m at a loss for words. She is a beautiful character that cared deeply for her friendship with Telium despite the mistakes that happened even until the end, “I came to tell you goodbye one last time…. Maybe in the next life, we can be friends.”
The conclusion has me crying tears of happiness and sadness as these characters adventure comes to a close. This book will have you feeling every emotion imaginable and sucks you in for a hauntingly beautiful ending, ‘You deserve happiness too,’ Selenia whispers.
