Mathsmagica: Light's Shadow

Rate this book
A new age looms over the land of Mathsmagica, where equations weave the fabric of reality, and the past whispers through the shadows.

As the enigmatic figure known as Avos emerges, old alliances and buried secrets ignite a series of cataclysmic events. The creatures of legends, the dragons, have returned. With motives shrouded in mystery, but their impact undeniable. As their influence spreads, the world trembles under a magic-threatening spell unlike anything seen before.

Amid this turmoil, Harmony Enforcers Sova, Evie, and Nilah continue their studies and duties, unaware that their lives are poised to intersect with destinies far greater than their own. Yet, shadows move in the periphery - a being born of flesh and magic struggles to find his place in a world that fears him, and a truth long thought buried threatens to upend everything.

Three paths converge in Mathsmagica: a young man grappling with his lineage and powers, a shadow from the past with a plan to rewrite the rules of magic, and a living anomaly desperate to find purpose in a hostile world. Their fates intertwine within the walls of a mysterious, ever-changing stronghold known as The Castle of Wax, where there cost of power is measured in blood.

As forces beyond comprehension clash, Mathsmagica's very essence is at stake. Can The Light prevail, or will its shadow cast a darkness too deep to escape?

this is the 2nd book in the series. I really loved the pacing the book and the archive bits at the end! This is an excellent book!

There's poetic justice in what has to be done and how it's done. When you are brought into a world full of light and shadows, you have and will support your champions. Even if they're just a torso thrown to the wolves.

Georgiev's writing is superlative, with each turn and adventure leaving you awestruck. The destruction. The world-building. The introduction to new individuals we will definitely grow to love if we don't kind of already love them.

Also. I want a Tropic. We all need a Tropics in our lives.

Amazing characters and wonderful world

I was excited to read this next book in the series because I loved the first one so much. The book starts with a bang with new additions to the crew from the first book.

The character development is amazing and I loved the addition of the new characters. One of them is not human but is working to fit in with humans. I loved this and his thought process of coming in and working to blend in with everyone around him. He was working to understand the world and how to find his place in it.

The points of view go from many characters throughout the story, spanning multiple time frames. This can sometimes be a challenge to make sure people follow along, but I feel like the author was able to guide us along quite well. The different time periods also helped to provide context to what was going on.

I felt the book was leading up to so much. Some of the characters' points of view weren't completely developed, but I guess that is what you get for subsequent books in the series!

There were a lot of adventures and scenes where it took you to a different experience than the overall arching story. Sometimes I felt like there could be more grounding in the main story rather than side adventures. There was an occasion or two where I was trying to understand why there was so much detail provided for a scene, but this may be resolved in further books in the series.

Overall, a wonderful world filled with amazing characters that left you wanting more.

Mathsmagica: Light’s Shadow by Daniel Georgiev is book two in the Mathsmagica series. After reading the first book I was eagerly awaiting to dive back into this world with this one. Let me say I was not disappointed in the least; I’m enjoying how everything is expanding and becoming more intense. I will mention that you do have to read these books in order as they’re not standalones. A definite highlight for me is the magic system… it’s so unique and interesting. I also really enjoyed that there was more of a math aspect with the spells in this book than the prior. The characters are evolving and developing… I can’t wait to see what’s in store going forward for them. With the first book I would have said that Sova was my favorite character of the bunch. I must say that with book two the undead talking wildcard that is Gash has taken the top spot. If I had to choose Gash would 100% be my chosen champion. I also may or may not want the skeleton fish, Tropic! The writing is amazing and world building is on another level… It's just so cool and interesting. You can’t help but be drawn into this world; not to mention all the twists and turns that happen. I’ll mention that this book does end on a cliffhanger so be prepared. All I can say is I’m anxiously awaiting more. If you want to read a great fantasy series this is it; it’s such a special kind of read. I highly recommend it… two thumbs way up.

This book starts with something so intriguing that you just have to keep on reading and then you‘re back in Mathsmagica. Back in the world, back to the cute mushroom cafés, back to the wonders of equations becoming magic right away.
Our trio has evolved and so has the authors writing style. He is more daring, more adventurous, more playful with his words. And it just pulls you in.

I loved all the twists and turns, the new characters, the banter, the wit, the sass, the romance. I smirked, I chuckled, I screamed at the book (why? Don‘t! Stupid idiot! Can‘t you see! It‘s a trap! Aaarghh) I must have scared and traumatized the cats more than once.
And oh I shed a huge tear! I even contacted the author after I finished the and asked him „why???? Why this ending???“

That‘s how you can tell I really absorbed this book!

So if you love dragons, necromancer, magic based on math, turns and twists, a bit of romance (I promise it‘s still closed doors and not that spicy - I‘d say half a 🌶️ tops), then this book is definitely for you!

Oh and did I mention there is a skeleton pet fish named Tropic? 😏

That letter broke my heart. 💔 Nillie is the sweetest, most loving person and she should be protected at all costs. Forgiveness may not be on the cards if she doesn't make it through the entire series. The first book was great, but this one was even better. I really like Calamity and Gash, they brought a different view of the magic system we hadn't seen which was interesting and they also showed how the original trio worked alongside others as well. I found the little snippets of the equations for the spells interesting to see as it helped me to understand the unique magic system a little better. I've got real iffy feelings about Evie at the minute, and did for most of this book. I'm just not sure what the angle is there, and what her intentions are but I'm sure it has something to do with what happened with Avos and Sovah, and I'm very much looking forward to seeing where her story goes, especially after the clues in the ending. This is an amazing story, with such good world building and interesting storylines. Now to (not so) patiently wait for more...

Omg!! The second book to this series was amazing! And now with illustrations too not just the archives! Daniel has truly out done himself this time! And with a little spice mixed in too 🌶️

Still following on from the first book but still leaves you with questions and wondering what is install for the future books to this series. More of the world of Mathsmagica has been introduced and how their magic truly works. If you haven’t read the first book, then you may not understand this one.

Sova has a few things to deal with, not just with his school duties as being the leader of the Harmony Enforcers, but other things as well. Trying to understand his powers and limits. Evie is growing so much as well as Nellie in their powers. But will they discover all the secrets that are coming their way? Be able to truly get on top of the danger the dragons could still possibly pose?

This is a must read! I absolutely loved Mathsmagica Light’s Shadow.

Daniel's writing is truly amazing, he has a way to make you feel as though you are going through every event and feeling that the MC's are.

Mathsmagica: Light's Shadow is book 2 in the Mathsmagica series, and let me tell you book 2 was just as addicting to read as book 1! Reading the character developments has been great and truly places you in a way to understand each character, what they are going through and how they are progressing in their magic! Truly a great read and very well written.

Book 2 is a deeper dive into the magic and characters of Mathsmagica. It's an excellent read. The descriptions are amazing for those visually minded and there's an amazing treat for those more mathematically minded. The characters are growing and it's amazing to read.

My one warning:
BEWARE OF CLIFFHANGERS!
Daniel is a cliffhanger KING! I can't freaking wait for book 3!!

In this 2nd book, readers are transported into a realm where numbers are more than mere symbols—they are the threads that weave reality itself. This masterfully crafted fantasy novel blends the rigor of mathematical logic with the boundless potential of magic, creating a unique and immersive world that is as intellectually stimulating as it is spellbinding.

At the heart of this unfolding epic lies Avos, a shadowy figure whose emergence sends ripples across Mathsmagica, awakening ancient powers and rekindling old rivalries. The return of dragons—creatures of legend long thought extinct—adds further complexity to an already unstable world, their motives cloaked in mystery but their influence undeniable.

Meanwhile, Harmony Enforcers Sova, Evie, and Nilah carry out their duties, unaware of the seismic changes about to pull them into a battle that transcends their understanding. The novel’s multiple perspectives add depth, particularly in the case of a young man wrestling with the weight of his lineage, a mysterious entity seeking to overturn the very fabric of magic, and an anomaly struggling for identity in a world that refuses to accept him. These threads come together within the enigmatic Castle of Wax, a shifting fortress where power is not only coveted but comes at a steep, often bloody, price.

The novel excels in its intricate world-building, presenting a setting that is at once fantastical and deeply structured. The concept of Mathsmagica—where equations dictate existence—is fresh and compelling, offering a rich backdrop for philosophical musings on power, destiny, and the consequences of rewriting the rules of reality. Themes of legacy, self-acceptance, and the nature of control run throughout the narrative, inviting readers to ponder the cost of wielding immense power.

While the story is complex, it remains engaging due to its dynamic cast of characters and a steadily mounting sense of urgency. Each figure’s struggles are deeply personal, yet their fates intertwine in ways that feel inevitable and satisfyingly interconnected. The pacing is well-balanced, mixing moments of reflection and world-building with high-stakes action, keeping readers invested from start to finish.

Overall, this book is a thought-provoking, genre-blending novel that will appeal to fans of high fantasy and intellectual intrigue alike. With its innovative take on magic, morally complex characters, and an ever-unfolding mystery at its core, this book is a must-read for those who love their fantasy laced with deep lore and philosophical depth.

A Spellbinding Adventure
Daniel Georgiev's *Mathsmagica: Light's Shadow* is a breathtaking five-star read that masterfully blends science fiction with fantastical elements, creating a truly unique and captivating experience. Georgiev paints a vibrant picture of Mathsmagica, a land where mathematical equations are the very building blocks of reality, and where the whispers of the past hold the key to the future. The arrival of the enigmatic Avos sets off a chain reaction of epic proportions, reawakening ancient alliances and unearthing long-buried secrets. The return of dragons, creatures of legend and immense power, throws the world into chaos as their mysterious motives threaten to unravel the fabric of magic itself.

Against this backdrop of impending cataclysm, we follow Harmony Enforcers Sova, Evie, and Nilah. Initially absorbed in their studies and duties, they are unknowingly drawn into a destiny far grander than they could have imagined. The narrative skillfully weaves together multiple threads, introducing a being born of flesh and magic, struggling for acceptance in a world that fears him, and a buried truth poised to shatter the foundations of Mathsmagica.

The Castle of Wax, a mysterious and ever-shifting stronghold, serves as a focal point for the converging paths of these compelling characters. Within its walls, the true cost of power is revealed, measured in blood and sacrifice. The key themes of lineage, forbidden knowledge, and the search for purpose in a hostile world resonate deeply, adding layers of complexity to an already rich narrative.

Georgiev's prose is both evocative and precise, capturing the wonder of Mathsmagica while grounding the fantastical elements in a believable reality. The tension builds steadily as forces beyond comprehension clash, leaving the reader breathlessly anticipating the outcome. *Mathsmagica: Light's Shadow* is not just a science fiction novel; it's an exploration of the human condition, the struggle for identity, and the consequences of wielding immense power. This book is a must-read for anyone who enjoys imaginative world-building, compelling characters, and a story that will stay with you long after you turn the final page.

I’ll be honest—this book surprised me in a lot of ways.

At first, Light’s Shadow felt like stepping into a storm of ideas. There’s a lot thrown at you upfront—math terms, magical rules, new POVs, a dense world—but once I pushed through that first stretch, I was hooked. The story opens up into something layered and meaningful, with a magic system that actually makes you think. Georgiev doesn’t just rely on tropes—he’s building something different here, and I respect that.

What really sold me were the characters. Sova, Evie, Nilah… I genuinely cared about them. Their dynamics felt real and earned, especially as the stakes got higher. And Avos—probably one of the more compelling antagonists I’ve read in a while. You can’t fully hate him, which makes the whole conflict feel that much more intense.

The pacing? Once it hits its stride, it moves. There’s tension, mystery, big battles, emotional payoff—and dragons (yes, actual dragons). The Castle of Wax sequence was vivid, cinematic even. Georgiev clearly knows how to blend logic with chaos, which is no small feat.

My only gripe—and it’s not a dealbreaker—was the heavy exposition early on. At times, it felt like I was back in school trying to memorize equations. I get that the math-magic system is a core part of the world, but I wish some of that info had been spread out more naturally. That said, once I got used to the rhythm, I was fully invested.

Final thoughts: If you love intelligent fantasy that doesn’t spoon-feed you, Mathsmagica: Light’s Shadow is absolutely worth the read. It challenges, it surprises, and most importantly—it delivers. Just know going in: the first few chapters require patience. But trust me, the payoff is there.

Would I recommend it? 100%, especially if you're tired of the same recycled magic systems and want something fresh, thought-provoking, and emotionally grounded.

Daniel Georgiev's Mathsmagica: Light's Shadow weaves a captivating tale where the elegance of mathematics intertwines seamlessly with the mysteries of magic. The story follows a young protagonist who discovers a hidden world where mathematical principles underpin all forms of enchantment. Georgiev masterfully blends engaging narrative with subtle explorations of mathematical concepts, making abstract ideas accessible and intriguing for readers of various backgrounds.
The plot unfolds with a compelling sense of discovery as the protagonist learns to harness the power of numbers and equations to navigate challenges and unravel secrets within this enchanted realm. The world-building is imaginative, painting a vivid picture of a society where theorems and algorithms hold the key to wielding magical abilities.
While the focus remains firmly on the story and its characters, Light's Shadow cleverly integrates mathematical puzzles and logical deductions into the narrative, encouraging readers to think critically alongside the protagonist. Georgiev's writing style is clear and engaging, making even complex ideas feel approachable. Overall, Mathsmagica: Light's Shadow offers a unique and entertaining reading experience that subtly sparks curiosity about the beauty and power of mathematics within a fantastical framework.
It's a book that could appeal to both those who enjoy fantasy adventures and those with an interest in the underlying logic that governs our world, and perhaps even this magical one.

"Mathsmagica: Light's Shadow" plunges you back into a world where the very laws of reality are governed by mathematical equations, and this installment raises the stakes considerably. The emergence of Avos and the return of dragons inject a thrilling sense of impending chaos. Georgiev masterfully weaves together multiple storylines, following the Harmony Enforcers Sova, Evie, and Nilah as they navigate their duties, unaware of the larger forces at play. The introduction of a mysterious being born of flesh and magic adds a compelling layer of intrigue, hinting at deeper secrets within Mathsmagica's history.

The narrative expertly builds tension as these seemingly disparate paths begin to converge, all within the enigmatic and ever-shifting Castle of Wax. The concept of power having a bloody cost adds a darker edge to the magical system. The descriptions of the dragons and the threatening spell are vivid and imaginative, showcasing the author's creative world-building. You find yourself invested in the individual journeys of the characters while simultaneously anticipating the collision of their destinies. The looming question of whether light can overcome the encroaching shadow creates a palpable sense of urgency. This sequel expands upon the fascinating premise of the first book, delivering a captivating blend of adventure, mystery, and high-stakes magical conflict that leaves you eagerly awaiting the next chapter.

I was totally intrigued by this book after hearing about a fantasy where math is literally used as magic equations casting spells. "Mathsmagica: Light's Shadow" completely delivers on that wild premise and then some.

This second book really kicks things up a notch. Sova, Evie, and Nilah (the Harmony Enforcers) are back, facing dragons, some mystery villain called Avos, and way more magical trouble than ever. Georgiev makes the math-magic system feel logical and mysterious—that's what I love about it! You can actually follow the mathematical reasoning behind spells, which is such a cool twist on typical fantasy.

The character development is where this book really shines though. There's this hybrid character caught between worlds that's absolutely fascinating to follow, and Gash - this undead wildcard - completely stole the show for me. And okay, I never thought I'd say this about a fantasy novel, but Tropic the skeleton fish is genuinely one of the best characters I've encountered in ages.

It's a bit overwhelming at first with all the different characters and times, but it's so worth it once you get into it. It felt real, the friendships were genuine, and I didn't expect how deep it all was.

Just be warned - this ends on a brutal cliffhanger that'll have you immediately hunting for book three. If you want fantasy that actually makes you think while delivering on adventure and heart, this series is absolutely worth diving into.

Enjoyable

I liked this book more than I expected, and I found the idea of math being part of the magic system original and well thought out. Although I didn’t read book one, I appreciated the summary, which helped me follow most of what was going on. I enjoyed the characters, especially Gash and Calamity, who felt layered and not one-note, and I thought the pacing was solid, even though a few moments dragged a little. I didn’t love every part—some chapters had too many new names or concepts introduced too quickly—but I found the Castle of Wax sections the most interesting and engaging. I appreciated that the author didn’t over-explain everything, yet still gave enough detail to keep the story moving. I also found the illustrations helpful, especially in understanding how things looked or worked. Each of the three main plotlines felt important, and I was glad that none of them came off as filler. I was surprised by how emotional some scenes were, even though the tone of the book stayed fairly grounded. I wasn’t thrilled about the cliffhanger ending, but I’m still interested enough to continue with the series. Overall, I’d recommend this to readers who like structured, character-driven fantasy with a unique system and steady momentum. I also add and IMHO that this can be a featured series or movie if further edited and adapted.

Daniel Georgiev’s “Mathsmagica: Light’s Shadow” is a captivating fantasy that brilliantly weaves mathematics into magic, creating a truly unique reading experience. The worldbuilding is exceptional, presenting Mathsmagica as a realm where equations literally shape reality and mathematical principles govern magical abilities.

The character development shines throughout, particularly with protagonists Sova, Evie, and Nilah, whose individual journeys feel authentic and compelling. The introduction of new characters like Calamity and Gash adds wonderful depth and complexity to the story. Georgiev masterfully balances multiple perspectives without losing narrative coherence, and the mathematical elements feel organic rather than forced.

The plot escalates beautifully from magical academy beginnings to epic, world-threatening stakes. The mysterious Castle of Wax and the enigmatic Avos create genuine intrigue that keeps pages turning.

However, I must note that the cover image doesn’t quite capture the book’s sophisticated blend of mathematics and magic—it feels somewhat generic for such an innovative concept.

Overall, this is fantasy fiction at its finest, perfect for readers who appreciate intelligent world building and character-driven narratives.

From the very first chapter, Light’s Shadow grabs you by the collar and pulls you into a world where magic is math, and destiny might be written in equations. And let me just say it now: Tropic the skeleton fish absolutely steals the show. You think you’re ready for him, but you’re not.

What starts as a magical academy tale quickly escalates into something much more intense—with ancient powers stirring, the very destruction of Mathsmagica looming, and unexpected characters stepping into the spotlight.

Enter Calamity and Gash—two breakout characters who add layers of tension, charm, and chaos. Their presence elevates the story into something truly unpredictable. Gash’s quiet torment and Calamity’s raw intensity make them impossible to ignore.

Daniel Georgiev blends humor, heart, and high fantasy with shocking ease. And just when you think you’ve figured things out, another twist reminds you—this is Mathsmagica. Nothing is simple.

If you love magic systems with logic, character-driven plots, and high stakes with real emotional payoffs, don’t sleep on this one.

✨ 5/5 — for Tropic alone, honestly.

I jumped into Mathsmagica without reading the first book, and yeah, there were moments I felt like the new kid at a party where everyone already knows the inside jokes. But even with that, the concept is so cool it kind of pulled me in anyway. I mean, a world where math is magic? Like, literal equations shaping reality? That’s just such a strange and brilliant mix, I couldn’t help but be intrigued.

There’s a lot happening—dragons reappearing, this shadowy figure Avos stirring up who-knows-what, and these Harmony Enforcers (Sova, Evie, Nilah) who are clearly in over their heads but still pushing forward. You can feel the stakes rising fast, even if you're still trying to figure out all the rules. The emotional depth surprised me too—there’s this hybrid character caught between worlds, and a villain who might actually have a point? It's messy and philosophical and weird in the best way.

Yeah, the worldbuilding is a little dense upfront—especially without book one—but once you get your footing, it’s really rewarding. Definitely one for people who like their fantasy with brains and feelings.

Mathsmagica: Light’s Shadow is the second book in the Mathsmagica series. I have not read the first entry by Daniel Georgiev, and while I would have benefitted from the previous exposure to the story and characters, it did not hinder my enjoyment of the book and I soon got to grips with the world.

The book spans numerous points of view, which I enjoyed greatly as we can understand a number of different perspectives. Each character felt unique and had different drives and sub plots, which were consistent throughout, and we never spent too long away from characters to forget what they were doing at any point. Evie, Sova, and Nilah were all interesting characters to follow and the quality writing and witty, heartfelt dialogue really made their interactions a joy to read.

I really enjoyed the worldbuilding and the combination of mathematics and magic - it felt like the characters had to use intelligence and quick thinking to react to the numerous dangerous situations they were in and this added another element to the story. The fascinating world, interesting characters, and quality writing give this fantasy story an edge over so many others in the genre.

This book caught me off guard in the "best" way. At first, it feels like your usual magical school setup-keychains with spells, crushes over coffee, Harry Potter secret missions... you see what I mean.

But then it slowly dives into really deep emotional stuff. The bond between the trio is quite sweet and you watch it slowly but surely getting broken.

There's some serious heartbreak and darkness, especially in the later chapters. Sova, Evie, Nilah, even Calamity, they all go through big changes.

So it's not just about magic or adventure, it's about grief, loyalty, and identity. The tone flips from fun to heavyand I'm not sure how conscious and intended it was from the author but it works..

The world is cool too, full of equations and spells and clever magic systems, but it's the characters that really make it work. I didn't expect to care this much by the end, but now I'm just sitting here thinking about golden wings and broken friendships.

Sure, it's a little messy in places, but in a good, human kind of way.

Magic, math and big surprises

I just finished the book called “Mathsmagica: Light’s Shadow” that was written by Daniel Georgiev. It’s the second book in a really fun and smart series where math is used like magic. That’s right spells are made with numbers! The world is full of cool places, exciting battles and creatures like a talking skeleton fish named Tropic. The story follows three friends, the Harmony Enforcers, who are learning more about their powers while trying to stop dark forces. There are twists, new characters and even dragons! The book gets a little tricky if you didn’t read the first one, but once you catch on, it’s a wild ride. The author writes in a way that makes you feel like you’re right there with the characters. Just a heads up it ends on a big cliffhanger! I can’t wait for book three. If you like magic, math, adventure and stories that keep you guessing, I think a lot of people will enjoy this book.

awesome sequel

So, the first book was amazing, but this one is 100% better. For those of you who aren’t familiar with this genius book series, imagine a world where there are different types of magic, and magic is tied in with math equations. Then you have twins who are super close and powerful, a love interest who wields light, and along the way, a necromancer—and I don’t want to spoil who the other guy is. Holy crap, it gets even better! It has what I love most about a fantasy book: a quest. There are battles, secrets revealed, enemies vanquished—but remember, everything comes with a price. The story ends on a brutal cliffhanger. I feel like if I say any more, I’ll ruin the book. The spice level was reasonable, enough for you to understand what was going on, but not vulgar. The action is epic. If you’re into well thought out books that keep you guessing this book is for you.

Mathsmagica: Light's Shadow is the second book in the Mathsmagica book series. I got to read book 1 which was a gem. This one is even better.

Light's Shadow dives deeper into the characters. There are a few things that I like in general when we're talking about books;

Descriptions / information about...
Well written characters
Illustrations
Books that are so perfectly written, that I get pulled into the book. And that happens barely.

All these things were shown in this book and took me to another world.

The development from the characters are really good. The way how the world is, yet again, written is so beautiftul.
There is some adult content in this book, but it's way less than in the normal books I read.

What you can expect;

Fantasy
Magic
Friendship
Love
and another Cliffhanger

Thank you to Daniel Stefanov Georgiev for the ARC.

Plot 3.75/5
Characters 4/5
Ending 3.75/5
Interest 3.75/5

Overall 3.75/5

-I didn’t feel as intrigued by this book compared to the first one. But that doesn’t mean I didn’t enjoy it. I still felt intrigued by the storyline with Calamity and then Avos. Their point of views were very intriguing. I still quite liked the magic although since some times I kind of lost interest, I got confused in some moments.

-I still quite liked the characters. They were so sweet. I was confused bout Sova and Sovah but then caught on. I guess I probably should have re read the first book before because I couldn’t keep up with everything. I really found Calamity interesting. Again, like in the first book. I would have liked a little more tension in a romantic relationship.

-I would like to continue with this series. There is so much potential in this universe and these characters. I am really liking everything that has been going on but I probably need to reread the books before continuing on and getting even more lost.
