Lesson Learned
Tired of having been constantly on the move, Drew is determined to make Cardiff his home. When Drew starts his new job as teacher in Cardiff, he strikes up an immediate friendship with Nathan Morgan, a young History teacher. Nathan is instantly attracted to Drew, but doesn't want to risk their fledgling friendship by declaring the extent of his desire. Completely oblivious to Nathan's quandary, Drew doesn't realize the true nature of his own feelings for Nathan until accusations from a student force both men's hands. But Drew has spent his life running away. Running away from his mistakes, his desires and a secret-filled past. It was difficult to really warm up to Drew because of his very off-putting comments towards women; I understand it was the author's intent to show how he was masking his pain by denying his true feelings, his fractured mentality acted in fear, convinced relationships with men were dangerous, women = safe. 😥 But, it was Nathan's tender touch - generous of spirit and with patience in abundance - that redefined his expectations and helped heal those deep-rooted unforgettable wounds.
Despite their obvious differences, 24 yo dark-haired Welsh history teacher Nathan to 34 yo blond American chemistry teacher Andrew, within ten-weeks of Drew joining the school staff and a misunderstood first meeting, they eased into a affable pleasant friendship, only soured with with some rather unfortunate interventions that has both of them reexamine how they truly feel about each other. 🥺
“I still couldn’t allow myself to get attached to a man. Until I met you. You crept under my defenses, Nathan Morgan.”
He was also the more mature and perspective of the two, which is exactly what Drew needed by moving to Cardiff and leaving his traumatic past behind him. Drew, who could not let go of the anxiety that stayed within him - his self-imposed fear of a visible scar that was more than a mark, more than a mask. 😢 But with Nathan's gentle soothing care he lowers the boulders of his heart, basking in the warmth willingly given by a man who did not cower from a wound that had severed his spirit and soul. ❤️🩹🤍
He's uncertain to let himself be vulnerable to a relationship, but Nathan is the best friend he could be. His Knight Protectors, who easily welcomed him into his life and heart eased that burden and shame. I think maybe you— we—could be worth the risk. I loved the scene when Nathan lavished his scars was an exploration of adoration and affection that showed Drew his desire was more than just skin-deep - the turning point for Drew to see there was someone that wanted every part of him - loved him as a whole. 🥹
“I remembered the pleasure you gave me, the desire I felt while you worshiped something I didn’t think was worthy of your time or attention.”
There is a subplot of a student's attraction for Drew, lusting for him with possibly damaging consequences with questionable choices. 😒 It serves as a catalyst for him wanting Nathan, when he expressed his own disappointment of Drew's dismissive treatment of her thirst. A sure enough Lesson Learned of when it came back to bite him in the butt in the final hour. It's a much needed look of respecting the limits of student=teacher relationships, to not abuse or cross the boundaries that exist.
Special shout-out to Shirley "Heartless" Hartley, whose frankness and level-headed approach as headmaster to the conflicts her two well-liked teachers had to face made her such a blessing to have in their corner. Really appreciated how fair and candid she was without ever being over the top.

Alas, there was not much difference between the two, save for the more lighthearted cover; and aside from a slight smidge of more heated kisses in the epilogue, there weren't many notable differences. Drew's crude and crass, and imo, offensive descriptions of the appeal of having a sexual dalliance with women was sadly still there, which was a disappointment. 😮💨 It always baffles me that a female author would describe women as such, regardless of the argument that it's merely a reflection of the character's perspective. 🙍🏻♀️
And not to be nitpicky, but I've never seen an American, simply say I went to hospital, always ... the hospital. Maybe I'm wrong, I'm not an expert, but yeah, that was an expression of the Author's own personal writing style that threw me off. Urgh, I hate being so finicky. However, there was one glaring alteration, which I did catch, because it was an eyebrow-raising comment that didn't sit well with me. An indication that yes, with time, one can be enlightened to change their initial perspective. 🙏🏻

Sweet story about Drew an American teaching in England and Nathan also a teacher at the school.
I kept having to remind myself that Drew is actually 10 years Nathan's senior, since really Nathan is definitely the more aware and mature of the two.
I liked the slow progression from friendship to more and I ended up liking both guys a lot.
Now Claire I could have done without! ;)

Lesson Learned is a cute story about two teachers that fall in love while navigating manipulative students and trying to keep their relationship secret. The story was well written and nicely edited. I liked Drew and Morgan and the chemistry between them. I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book.

Drew is an American teacher living in the U.K. He left the he was attending school and the United States after a tragic ending to a relationship he was in, and he has recently relocated once again to a new school after breaking up with his latest girlfriend. At his new school he meets fellow teacher, Nathan. The two hit it off quite quickly and become the best of friends, but Nathan is gay, unbeknownst to Drew, and has begun to develop romantic feelings for his new co-worker and friend, but he'll have to keep his feelings to himself, because Drew is straight, or is he?
This was a lovely read. Both Drew and Nathan are very likable characters and I loved the progression of their relationship. It's a slow progression from friends to lovers and it felt natural. I really enjoyed the interactions between Drew and Nathan both as friends and later as lovers. They had an easy camaraderie and I loved that the friendship was only made stronger by them admitting their feelings for one another.
Drew's backstory was heart-breaking and I just wanted to give him a big ole hug and was really happy when he finally opened up to Nathan and fully let him in. The Clare drama was well-written and added angst and a bit of suspense to the story.
This was a well-written story with lovable characters you could really root for to get their HEA. The chemistry and sexual tension between Drew snd Nathan was off the charts. The story is filled with friendship, family, love, a little angst and some steam as well. Very recommendable!

I loved this book. SO MUCH.
Loved both Nathan and Drew, and Kimi too, she was a dear friend.
But oh, that b*tch Claire. I wanted to really -really!- slap her, she was so evil and did so much harm -grrrr- selfish pig!!
Anyway, I already said I LOVE this book? Oh, yeah, I did. XD

Excellent m/m romance about two teachers at a Welsh secondary school who become close friends, although one finds the friendship increasingly challenging, due to the attraction he feels for his oblivious, obviously attracted to women friend.

Drew was like a fish out of water and if it wasn't for Nathan's help he wouldn't have had any idea to negotiate the problems he faced. Even with the help, Drew managed to get himself into a sticky situation that could endanger not only just his job, but his growing feelings for Nathan. Secrets and lies have a way of coming to the surface complicating Drew and Nathan's budding friendship, but could there be more between them then they realize?
This was a wonderful story was incredible characters who commanded form the start. The roller coaster of emotions that both Nathan and Drew experienced brought their story to life.

Who doesn't love reading about a couple of cuties keeping secrets in school, even if they are the teachers????
I loved this book; It's a slow burn, friends to lovers tale of two men that click from day one. The two main characters are both well developed within the story line with neither of them declaring their sexuality within their work place. Whilst one is not shy outside if school the other is still reeling from life events that haunt his ability to live his true feelings day to day. Will finding each other help them both to be more open...keep reading to find out!
Lillian Francis has written a great book, based around a secondary school in Cardiff; she has used all the angst of teenage years to great effect through out the book as well as mental health issues, alcohol and drug misuse, grief, and unrequited love to build additional story lines bringing the support cast in with the two main characters to give more depth to them.
Once they do find each other there is a fair amount of bedroom action and I loved that the book had a clear message about safe sex as this is not seen often enough in books!! I loved the comedic elements as well as the fact that I could hear the Welsh'ness of their voices when I was reading thanks to watching too much 'Gavin and Stacey'!
I totally loved this book and I'm recommending it for your Kindle library today although its one that you need to be careful reading when someone could be watching over your shoulder!!! xx

Normally I am such a sucker for books like this but in this books case I can honestly say something was just no there for me. I cannot put my finger on what the problem was but I tried three or four different times to get at least the first twenty-five percent of the book but I just could not get into this book no matter how many times I tried.
Do not get me wrong and think that there was just comething horrible about this read because there was not. It was a personal issue of not being able to catch my interest but that in no way means that this was a bad read or that others will feel the same way that I did.
In being honest I gave his book a three as a rating and that is again because of my own personal issue with this book not being able to capture my attention. But I do not want that to reflect negatively on the author Lillian Francis in any way because I truly believe that my not being able to completely enjoy this read is on me and not the author. I have read and loved other books by Lillian Francis and enjoyed them thoroughly so my advice is too try the book for oneself and then make your own decision as to whether you like it or not and not base whether you this book off of my opinion of it.

Lesson Learned is a sweet romance between main characters, Nathan and Drew. I really liked that while there is attraction, the pair actually become friends and get to know each other, somewhat, before they act on that attraction. I was bit confused at the big deal with Drew's secret. While it was a horrible situation, and heartbreaking for Drew, I'm not sure why it was such a big secret through so much of the story. Of course, what would a romance between two teachers be without a trouble-making student to throw a wrench into the works? I did see it coming, but I was surprised by how quickly it's resolved.
Overall, the story is longer than I felt it needed to be, with a little too much angst and attention on insignificant details. I appreciate a good description and setting the stage is important, but I would've preferred a little less on that part and a little more on the interactions between the characters. Both Drew and Nathan are likable and I liked that we get a bit of their romance as it grows, as opposed to the book ending with them finally getting together. Nathan and Drew's story did hold my interest, and despite the high level of angst, they are so good together and I enjoyed their journey from friends to lovers.

It was my first book by Lilian Francis but I just had to read it as soon as I had read the blurb.
This book is simply AWESOME! I loved (almost) everything about it.
It is hurt-to-comfort and friends-to-lovers type of a story with sweet HEA.
The writing style is great, the world created here is real and absolutely believable. I liked both MCs, it is obvious they are meant for each other. The chemistry is palpable.
I was sucked into the story right from the start and I kept reading because I just couldn't stop, I needed to know more. The pace here is fast, like really really fast. There's always something going on. The story is full of twists and it is impossible to get bored.
I strongly recommend this book to all M/M book lovers.

This is a true romance. It has all the things I love about them. Drew and Nathan become friends right from the start. In fact Drew considers Nathan to be his best friend. That's when it gets going in a big way. Through misunderstandings and poor communication with a spoilt teenage brat for added measure, these two guys have a very bumpy road to their HEA. I was given the privilege and opportunity to receive an advanced reader copy and I am voluntarily leaving an honest review. This was an older story that Lillian Frances has revamped. This is a book I highly recommend if you are wanting a true contemporary m/m romance.

This was a wonderful story of two men Nathan and Drew as they meet at the school where they work and become friends and then lovers. All is not bright on the horizon for these two though. Nathan needs to keep his gayness hidden as he is worried it will affect his job and Drew is more willing to let go of secrets. There is also a worrisome teen girl who is attracted to Drew and who knows what trouble she can cause. This is a sweet, somewhat "angsty" story with a slow burn and with a slow burn. I would certainly recommend this book as it's definitely a good read. I voluntarily read and reviewed this ARC book.

It's been a while since I've read such dull writing. Just the way it was written was so incredibly dry.
And typically, I find that you can tell if a book is set in the UK just from the dialogue. I was surprised to see that Lillian Francis is English. I would have though they were American, trying and failing to write a book set in Wales.
Like, how does an American's dialogue read the same as a Walian? And what American do you know that says, "Ta."?

I have enjoyed this story,the slow friends to lovers,kept me up in to the late
hours.the crowing up not to adulthood but to coming to terms with wat works
for you in order to be happy.it was so sweet.I loved Nathan,wat a patient sweetheart.
Drew you did well.
Kimi was a good sidecharacter,loved her.
I could do without the Claire drama,I found her inner dialogue a bit sudden
and strange.

A fantastic and memorable m/m romance read!! Drew, the newbie American science teacher, can be a bit naive, and if not for his Welsh colleague Nathan, would face some major set-backs in his career. Nathan was my favorite of the two; he's kind, organized and a great teacher and supportive friend. Drew's checkered romantic past lends extra depth to his character. Together they make a great closet couple but, eventually, it's a closet that leads to a major challenge to their relationship. Plenty of heat and romance, some great secondary characters (including Nathan's scene-stealing little niece), and a great plot. So glad I found this book!

Maybe it was just me, but I could not find the chemistry in this one. I tried and tried to the end and then I found it was really long.

I quite enjoy this author’s stories. I always know they’re going to have a happy ending, that there won’t be a long of angst and that I will like the characters.
Lesson Learned is no exception. Drew is a thirty-something American who relocated to the UK after a horrible experience in his past in the US. He basically fled, and hasn’t been back. He has no interest in going back, and no interest in talking about, or even acknowledging, what happened. He is fresh out of a relationship that just didn’t work out with a woman, I believe in London, and has fled again. This time he is in Cardiff.
When Drew meets Nathan in a corridor in the school during classes, he instantly assumes the young man is a student, and suggests he might get along to class, only to discover that Nathan is another one of the teachers, who only looks younger than his mid-twenties actual age.
The two become friends, and there are pitfalls along the way. Nathan is gay, but not out at work. Drew is fresh out of a relationship with a woman. They grow to be good friends, but simple miscommunication can ruin even the best friendship.
I enjoyed Ms. Francis’ writing style as usual. I liked where the story went, and it was a pleasant afternoon read. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes a feel-good, friends to lovers type story.

Loved this story and the characters - I particularly enjoyed the UK school setting. It was interesting and enjoyable to see the relationship between the two leads slowly develop, with some stutters along the way but no major angst. It seemed quite realistic.

Another delightful read from Ms. Francis! Drew and Morgan are teachers in what I think is a secondary school in Cardiff (unfamiliar with the grades in UK schools). Drew has fled London after a relationship falls apart and makes friends with Nathan, a somewhat younger history teacher. They become friends and slowly but lovingly fall into a relationship. But there is something dark about Drew and his past. Through dealing with malevolent students, miscommunication and Drew's issues, this was a stunning romance that I thoroughly enjoyed. This is the second book I've read by this author and I really love her style. Her MCs are engaging, the story compelling and emotional and the sexy bits are lava-hot! Great secondary characters in Kimi and Ms. Hartley. As with the first book I read by her, the setting also plays a major role. Learned so much about Cardiff and it serves as a terrific backdrop to the story. This was one of those books I savored as I read. A lovely HEA just made me swoon.

Drew is starting at a new school in a teaching position. He meets Nathan at school and they become fast friends. What Drew doesn't realize is that Nathan wants more than friendship. Drew has his reasons why it can't be anything but friendship. I enjoyed this book.

Drew and Nathan were strong characters with depth. No one dimensional clichés here. Drew is, for all intents and purposes, on the run from his past. No, he didn’t do anything illegal, but America only reminded him of the terrible thing that happened to him several years back (I don’t want to give that away, though). He really wants a new start, and he’s ready to grab it with this new job. It’s obvious he’s hiding from part of himself in order to feel safe. Instead of safety, though, it’s only bringing him pain and anxiety.
Nathan seems to be a happy man. He’s got a good job, friends, and a great family. He’s not terribly lucky in relationships, though. When he meets Drew, he’s immediately attracted, but when he realizes Drew is straight (well…), he knows he’s in trouble. Even though he tries valiantly, he can’t stop himself for falling for his new best friend. This causes him a different sort of pain than Drew’s, but it’s no less traumatic, especially when his faith in Drew is shaken. Of the two main characters, Nathan was my favorite, and I wish I could have been there for him to offer comfort during the difficult times.
The chemistry between Drew and Nathan was well written and believable, from their friendship, to their romance, to their sex lives. The story isn’t slow moving by any means, but the progression felt natural. I was fully invested in their relationship. I wanted them to find each other and keep each other. They held my interest all the way through. My only issue with them is there was a bit too much angst. I especially wanted to reach through my Kindle to grab and shake Drew. You know that scene in Moonstruck when Cher slapped Nicholas Cage and yelled, “Snap out of it!”. Yeah. It was like that. Still, Drew and Nathan finally came to their senses and got with the program. They were sweet and solid when they needed to be because there is a period of time when they really needed to be.

Lesson Learned is a sweet, cute romance between Drew and Nathan. It's a May/December story between two teachers at an England school. Both of them are in the closet and they start out as friends as first, but it's progress of a relationship. They are keeping their relationship from their colleagues and students and the chemistry between these two is seen from start to finish. The book is well-written with a great flow to it. It's friends to lovers, May/December, some angst, jealousy and I enjoyed it.

Drew has been running from his past and has decided to settle down. He has a new teaching position as a science teacher in Cardiff. He has become friends with the History teacher, Nathan. Drew hides himself but is forced to come out. I loved how the two men became best friends that escalated to romance. This was good, definitely recommend. Lesson Learned is the kind of book I turn to during a stressful, busy week. It's a light and easy read with all the entertaining comfort of a classic British comedy - you already know where its going so sit back and enjoy the ride (no pun intended as there is plenty of one man riding another in this story, once things get going). Drew Jackman (the author's homage to Hugh Jackman?) is a devastatingly handsome, blond and blue-eyed 34 year old American with a muscular ass and biceps to match. He's relocated to Cardiff, taking a job as a teacher, after two failed relationships with women. He becomes best friends with another teacher, Nathan Morgan, a 6'3", 24 year old with a lithe runner's body and a devilish quick wit, who is openly gay - except at work. In short order, the "bro" in bromance is dropped, with romance, and unexpected problems, ensuing.
I enjoy Ms. Francis' books, even if her prose is sometimes a bit overheated and melodramatic. She draws characters with a crisp, clean precision, creates stories with a full palette of memorable details, and moves the plot along with a clear sense of structure and rhythm. Her sense of wit is given room to play in Lesson Learned, with funny bits of dialogue running throughout, providing a counterpoint to a serious plot point in the second half. It's a breezy, comfortable book that can make an intense day feel lighter, especially the heart warming chapter with Nathan's 5 year old niece, Bethan.

Drew Jackson is a man who reacts to trouble by running away. He has run from his latest mistake and is now ready to settle down at his new science teaching job in Cardiff. Right from the start, a friendship starts with history teacher Nathan Morgan. Nathan enjoys his teaching job, but he feels he must hide his sexuality for his own protection. And although Nathan felt an easy attraction for Drew, he was fairly certain that Drew was straight, especially with his history of female entanglements.
Their growing friendship and comfort at being around each other was very well done and felt real. By the time they opened up to each other, they had a strong foundation established and were ready to explore the possibilities. I was proud of Drew when he was ready to run at the first sign of trouble, but then realized that was his automatic response and, maybe this time, he has a real reason to stay and face whatever challenge was presented, with Nathan by his side.

If you don't ask, how can you tell? Drew, moved to teach at a new school and was lost on the campus. He saw a student and felt he should reprimand him for being out of place. Nathan, Assistant head of Humanities Dept, enjoyed the misunderstanding. Nathan, 24 was admired and respected by the staff, even though he always wore jeans. When school was in formal session, he grew a beard, wore glasses and tamed his hair. Drew was a habitual toucher. Nathan, was gay, just not advertising. He was interested in Drew, but realized Drew was into women. Nathan was ready to be just a friend, no matter how much it hurt. A potentially career ending event occurred at school. Nathan tried to warn Drew. Then the situation passively escalted. Drew and Nathan came to a potentially friendship ending crossroads. Does Drew's career survive? Does he stay a good friend to Nathan? Can Nathan stay strong? In any universe, can Drew have feelings for Nathan? Great story. Nicely themed out. Good characters. Well done! Drew and Nathan are school teachers who become close friends and enjoy each other´s company on their free time. Soon, Nathan develops feelings for Drew, who he believes is straight, so Nathan keeps it to himself. After some problems with a student, the best friends need to work on their relationship and things get more complicated.
They are great together, the dialogs are funny, full of banter and sarcasm. I loved their interactions. Nathan was so lovable and I also loved Kimi, a fellow teacher who has such strong caracther. Drew, on the other hand, was ok at the beginning of the book, but soon he became a bit silly and even annoying. He was 10 years older than Nathan but it appeared he was the young one, Nathan having to save him constantly. For someone who had gone through so much pain in the past, he shouldn´t have been so naive and silly.
This was a great book, very enjoyable and with a HFN ending.
