Avec ce troisième tome de Centuria, Tohru Kuramori confirme l’ambition sombre et politique de son manga. Loin d’un simple récit d’aventure fantastique, la série s’impose progressivement comme une réflexion sur le pouvoir, la responsabilité et les mécanismes de domination dans un monde profondément marqué par la violence.

Le protagoniste, Julian, porte en lui une puissance singulière : celle héritée de cent esclaves. Ce don, loin d’être une bénédiction, agit comme un fardeau moral. Chaque utilisation de cette force rappelle l’origine tragique de ce pouvoir, ancré dans la souffrance et l’exploitation. Kuramori joue habilement avec cette contradiction : Julian est à la fois puissant et vulnérable, capable de renverser des situations désespérées tout en refusant d’abandonner son humanité.

Dans ce volume, la tension dramatique s’intensifie autour de la prophétie annoncée par Elstri : la mort du roi aux mains de la jeune Diana. Cette annonce plonge les personnages dans une spirale de méfiance et de violence préventive. Enbarr, chargé d’éliminer l’enfant, incarne alors l’un des dilemmes moraux les plus forts du récit. Son hésitation face à Diana révèle la fragilité des certitudes dans un univers où l’obéissance aveugle peut conduire à l’irréparable.

L’une des scènes les plus marquantes du tome repose sur l’intervention des villageois qui, voyant Julian subir la violence sans riposter, décident de prendre sa défense. Ce moment agit comme un tournant narratif : la solidarité collective devient un acte de rébellion. Kuramori souligne ainsi une idée centrale de la série — dans un système oppressif, le simple geste de protéger autrui peut devenir un acte révolutionnaire.

Graphiquement, l’auteur poursuit son travail sur une atmosphère sombre et dense. Les visages marqués, les contrastes appuyés et les décors austères renforcent la brutalité du monde décrit. Les scènes de confrontation sont particulièrement efficaces, privilégiant l’intensité émotionnelle plutôt que la démonstration spectaculaire de puissance.

Ce troisième tome confirme que Centuria ne se contente pas d’exploiter les codes du dark fantasy manga. La série développe une dimension politique et morale plus profonde, interrogeant la notion de destin et la manière dont les individus peuvent résister à la fatalité.

À mesure que l’histoire progresse, Julian apparaît moins comme un héros classique que comme une figure de résistance fragile, confrontée à un monde où la justice reste une conquête incertaine. Un tome intense qui renforce l’originalité d’une série déjà prometteuse.

Story

A young boy named Julian sneaks aboard a slave ship and receives the strength of one hundred slaves from a supernatural being called Ocean. The cost of this power is the life of Julian's only friend, a pregnant woman named Mira. Julian saves her baby named Diana and they wash ashore. A massive knight named Angvall finds them and nurses them back to health and they join a village. When a villager goes missing in the woods, Angvall searches for them and encounters a terrifying beast that speaks in the human tongue. After a bloody battle, Julian appears and successfully fights off the monster. After Angvall's report of the events, the Oracle Elstri arrives and, the moment she sees Diana, claims the child will kill the king! She then orders Angvall to kill Diana.

Sometimes a new series comes along which you just know is going to be spectacular. This is one of those! Whilst looking for a third manga at Travelling Man Comics in Manchester, this new series stood out due to its tentacle, cthulhu-esk, back cover design. Clearly I was going to buy it, even without reading the blurb. My hunch was spot on.

Julian and Diana have build themselves a new life with Angvall and Titi. But peace and tranquillity would not sell too many books. This volume deals with the aftermath of oracle's prophecy and the order to kill Diana. Angvall is pulled between loyalty to the King and her new friendship with Julian, with the fate of the whole village at risk.

Once again, the artwork is raw and visceral, bringing the horrors to life. It has to be 5 stars again.

I am torn because Centuria does some cool things, but I cannot force myself to give it higher score, even though this book has a lot of action, revelations and great art. But the writing is dragging it down so much. Kuramori is talented and gives his best, but he wants to do so much, so fast and does the opposite of "show, don't tell".

I have to say that this volume is really pushing its Berserk inspiration and adoration. The armour designs, movements, action scenes and double pages really feel like from the Golden age arc of Berserk. And I do not see this as a wrong thing, it wears its inspiration proudly. But what it does is subconsciously I am comparing it because the art and world design feel similar and I believe that it needs to cut itself and grow so it can get better.

The story brings carnage and lot of fighting. It brings with itself a lot of tropes, which work and are cool, but unfortunately, the worse thing is that the characters still land very flat for me. Conflict between family and duty is a classic one and works, but overall except for the villans, everyone feels so far like a npc. We'll see how it will be in the future.

It slowly gets better and better and I hope that it will continue on this trajectory.

Simple, efficace ! Au moins dans cette série quand on est mort, on l’est vraiment. J’ai d’ailleurs trouvé ce tome encore plus joli que les autres. Les planches et leur style est vraiment à part. J’espère que dans le prochaine tome l’histoire va avance, du moins un arc approche sur sa fin. Hâte de la suite !

This was very heart retching. The reader could really feel the conflict in Angvall as she tried dealing with her duty to her country and family. I'm glad she chose her family. The ending left me wanting more. Can't wait for the next volume.

3.75 - The loss of what I would have presumed to be a main character in this volume should lead to some interesting repercussions moving forward. This volume also sets us up for a big showdown.

La profetisa está absolutamente desquiciada, ansia la sangre de Diana, y disfruta viendo como la moral, la ética, el deber y el amor, destruyen mentalmente a Angval, además, para subir el nivel, implica a todos los habitantes de la aldea, al decirle que tal vez ella pueda sobrellevar el traicionar a su rey, pero que si ella se niega, no es solo su vida la que estará en peligro, todos los de la aldea sufrirán las consecuencias como traidores aunque no tengan nada que ver. El asco, desprecio y odio que tengo a esta mujer no se puede expresar con palabras.
Los mismos soldados que están con ella no les parece correcto, pero no quieren arriesgar a sus familias, uno de ellos la describe como fanática, yo creo que se quedó corto.
El flipado del tomo anterior aparece aquí, definitivamente es un psicópata que vive aburrido y aquello que disfrutaba (matar) ya le sabe a poco porque es “muy fácil”, por eso, cuando le dicen que Julian tiene poderes arcanos como él, prácticamente se le hace la boca agua al pensar en divertirse matándole, le da igual incluso la misión: acabar con Diana, solo quiere pelear con Julian, y se asegurará de que dé el máximo de sí mismo, aunque tenga que ser con métodos sucios.
¿Os he dicho ya que es el hijo del rey actual y que desprecia a su propio padre? Me da a mi que se viene una pugna por el poder interesante.

Aunque me gusta la historia, tengo la sensación de que está muy apresurada, ya lo dije con el primero, con el segundo creo que no lo comenté, pero aquí lo digo de nuevo, constantemente ocurre algo de gran relevancia y apenas tenemos tiempo de asimilar lo que ha ocurrido que pasa algo nuevo también importante. Hay una escena que debería ser dramática, pero no he tenido tiempo de encariñarme con el personaje, aunque nos han mostrado su pasado, no es suficiente para mí, si muestra que el personaje es impresionante, fuerte y resiliente, pero sabemos lo mismo que en el primer tomo.
