I went to the abandoned theme park to grieve a tragedy.
Wandering through its haunting shadows, I stumbled upon
something I was never meant to see.
Every atom in my body screamed at me to bolt and save myself.
But when his piercing eyes found mine, I froze there
like a dumb lamppost.
By the time my senses rushed in and I decided to bolt,
alas, it was too late.
The genius with glinting blue eyes, Max Thorne, spoke to me, and
his first words are, “A fate that carefully handpicked my test subject.”
Not in a million years did I imagine that a chemical lab would be the death of me.
And I, Zora Hayes, had no choice but to become his lab rat.

Going to an abandoned theme park to clear your head seemed like a good idea, but for those of us reading the book shouting “don’t go in there!” It really wasn’t the best idea!
Witnessing a murder also wasn’t on the best day ever list! And being subsequently kidnapped to lab tests wasn’t on Zora’s list of things to do…. But here we are!

It’s a fast paced read with plenty going on. A mind control drug that needs guinea pigs, and poor Zora gets caught and is marked for the “tests”!

Couldn’t put it down, read it in one afternoon!
The creepy vibes of the theme park had me thinking of scary movies (someone waiting to pop up behind you.) You could almost feel the wind on the back of your neck (I do love a well described scene.)

Both characters were great. Although at first you do wonder why an abandoned theme park seemed like a good idea at the time Zora!🤔

We get the possessive touch from Max as he goes from kidnapper to “saviour” but does he go from “bad guy” to “good guy”? And what is it Max actually does? (So many questions 😉)

And the twist? Well I wasn’t expecting it to be what it was in the end (not giving anything away😝)

I’m hoping we get another book at some point, and I’d love it if it was Wolfe’s story, as he didn’t get enough attention in this one. (My opinion 😉)

Odyssey is a group of elites that aim to take control of the world (world domination vibes and an evil cackle 😜) are both Max and Wolfe are members? (or just people who get a rare invite to the inner workings of Odyssey?) All is revealed in due course….

So, if you like suspense/intrigue/touch her and 💀 vibes, and some spicy moments then I’m sure you’d enjoy this one.

“You deserve everything in this world, not just materialistic things but my love too, baby. Yes, I love you, Zora. More than I ever thought possible.”

An intriguing tale of a girl experiencing a traumatic event, and wandering an abandoned theme park to clear her head. Of course nothing could go wrong... 🤦‍♀️
Our FMC witnesses a man being murdered and then subsequently gets kidnapped by the murderers to keep her quiet. But these are not your run of the mill murderers/kidnappers, they are scientists who are in the process of developing a mind control drug... and they have just captured their human guinea pig.
I read this book in a day, it was so captivating that I couldn't put it down. Max and Zora were great as the MMC and FMC and his transformation from psychopathic kidnapper to obsessed, possessive "even breathe in her direction and die" love interest was fascinating, and the hidden story underneath the main one with their main motivation for wanting the mind control drug was cleverly hidden until the end!
I hope that in the next book in the series Wolf gets a little more airtime, he was a fantastic side character in this story!
Definitely recommend this book!

Tropes: Forced Proximity, opposites attract, grumpy/sunshine, stuck together, fish out of water, banter to love, kidnapping to love, class difference romance, mind control, Dual POV.

Triggers: Accidents, bodily fluids, confinement, control (mind control drug), death, drugs, dubious consent, dying, fear, forced actions, gore, graphic death, graphic sex, guns, homicide, hostage situation, kidnapping, mass deaths, mass shootings, medical procedures, misogyny, needles, non consent, nudity, organised crime, pressure, profanity, slavery, threats, torture, verbal abuse, violence, weapons, forced use of mind altering drugs, Stockholm syndrome, choking, somnophilia, extremely possessive MMC

He and his best friend Wolf were watching the scientist who claimed he had unlocked the key to the universe. But he doesn't want to use his discovery to help mankind, but for profit.

It was almost too easy to kidnap him, he was so self-absorbed. But that changed as soon as he realized who had him. Max Thorne wanted that formula and would stop at nothing to have it. But they needed more than the formula. They needed a test subject.

Max and Wolf were genius scientists who were kicked out of the scientific world when they blew up the lab at MIT. They are determined to perfect the formula, but have no plan of the buyers getting their hands on it.

And the perfect test subject lands in their lap when she witnesses Max commit a murder. Only to become obsessed with the test subject.

I loved this book! It is very well written and the characters are fully developed and relatable. This book is has a total twist just when I thought I knew what was going on Max turns the tables and everything isn't as simple as it seems.

Max has only one focus... scientific formulas is his language, but Zora made him want something he never wanted... a relationship.

Max is unhinged, manipulative, morally corrupt, and a genius with a caveman mentality, but I loved him. He was so entertaining to get to know especially when Wolf pushed his buttons. Highly recommend.

I have to say. I walked into this book thinking it was a simple captor/captive romance with some experimentation....boy was I wrong.

“You know, Max,” Wolf said between bites, “I can’t decide if you’re staking your claim or throwing a tantrum. Either way, you’ve got a flair for theatrics.”

This book does push into the darker side of dark romance. Not Miranda Grant dark, or Saige Parker dark. But still on the darker side.

Max (MMC) and his best friend Wolfe is wokring on a serum that can make mind control possible. Zora just happens to be in the wrong place at the wrong time (or right time if your like me and love that twisted aspect).

The plot is very push and pull with Max and Zora. They get on each others nerves and really provoke the other intentionally.

Max is the definition of Black Cat. And he's not affraid to pretend to be somethign he's not if it gets him his way. Or in this case...Zora.

If you want a unhinged black cat MMC that wants full control. Then this is yoursign to pick up this book and jump into the Rule of Rogues universe.

Phantorift is a pleasant mix of suspense, intrigue, and fantasy. Taking you on a thrilling journey through an abandoned theme park's haunting shadows.

Phantorift paints a vivid and eerie landscape that feels both chilling and captivating. The abandoned theme park is brought to life with such meticulous detail that you almost feel the cold breeze and hear the creaking of forgotten rides, which is the perfect setting for the unfolding mystery that is about to happen.

Zora Hayes, the protagonist, is a relatable and compelling and is a on a journey of grief and discovery. Zora encounters chemistry master mind Max Thorne, who adds layers of complexity and tension to the story.

It was a fast paced read that left the heart racing at moments, while also having it's calmer moments, plus the spice is there also.

This story has an interesting plot that has you wondering where it is headed. The characters are very different from each other and there are some fun moments.
The pace of this story is very fast and at times felt rushed through so alot of detail was skipped over making me feel lost and having to double back to reread.
I like details and building so I would have really enjoyed this story being slowed down and plot being built up more.

Overall it was a little bit spicy quick read with an interesting plot.

What happens when you take a walk and see something you shouldn't?
You become that person's experiment and locked away with very little sunlight.
Then your world really changes,
the crush you had, to the life you were living.
This book has great characters and good storyline. I can't wait to read the next book, and I look forward to learning more about the other characters backgrounds.

I love how complex the characters are especially Max. It’s a quick read that keeps you interested the whole time, there wasn’t a dull moment. It’s a dark romance so if you enjoy that then this is a book for you!

Honestly not sure how to feel about this. Like some parts I loved and others I did not

Firstly, the timeline in which this was told gave me a headache a little and then the grammar that was used was ????
But the storyline was fun and different

I really enjoyed the premise but I honestly wish there was more of the plot in the middle versus just all the spice. However I loved the spice and the scenes were amazing in description but again I would have loved more of the story going on with Max. I was also a little thrown off by the timeline at times and unsure of what had been going on. Overall I enjoyed the story and that Max was able to find something else to enjoy in life other than just work.
