An interesting read for every student or scholar, who is interested in the history of universities in the world - in general and in the individual cases of the Berlin University (Humboldt and later Freie Universität), in the USA (Harvard, Berkeley, Duke), and China. Lots of details (sometimes too many, I think, but a scholarly work probably needs to offer lots of data and numbers and stats... The overall analysis is, however, intriguing, and Kirby clearly pays tribute to the important of "the liberal arts" - in addition to the purely utilitarian training at colleges and academies.
